MTD 5 HP Chipper / Shredder

I bought this used woodchipper on craigslist for $80. The reasons I wanted one is to create my own compost and my own mulch. I looked at other ones online and the price for a new woodchipper was out of my range. This works out great for what I use it for.

Always remove spark plug boot from spark plug before sticking your hand anywhere near moving parts of equipment like this. Guard inside discharge chute is designed to be easily and quickly removed to clear jams.

I have the same machine. It works like a champ if you keep the blades sharp. It sounded like those are kind of dull based on my experience.

Yeah I agree. It still starts and runs great. I have another video of me using it with freshly sharpened blades. Big difference.

I know everyone is the expert in the comments but I’ve found that resting the hopper on the ground and raking the leaves in to be more efficient.

Yep that is the ticket with these things. Even the bigger 8hp YARDMAN like mine. You can also cut out the gusset plate in there about 3" and that helps alot... I have the YARDMAN SC8 and it works fantastic now just put it together to get an early jump on things in the spring.

There are two chutes. The smaller one is fixed for use with chipping branches. The larger chute you called it a ramp is to shred leaf’s / twigs yard debris. This shredding chute has both a top hopper and ramp design depending on how it’s being used. When down position you can rake in leaves. The suction of the blade will pull it In.

Probably needs to be opened up and blades sharpened since its old, it should handle thicker branches

@@erniepenny221 No but its fairly simple to do. Take all the bolts off the "snail" and you can pull off the half that is attached with the chute on it and then access the blades inside. Take a file and make the edges nice and sharp again and just put the other half of the snail on and bolts back in.

I just inherited one of these exact machines. Pull cord is stuck. Not sure what I should do.

Probably a jam. Remove spark plug boot off spark plug, remove one or both of the bolts holding in the guard in the discharge chute and rotate the wheel inside in reverse to allow removal of the jam. Use gloves - chipper knives can be extremely sharp!

Take the recoil off, 4 bolts I believe. broken spring? If you can"t fix the recoil, sell the machine, you have no bussness operating it then.

This is hard to watch !! lol. You didn"t notice there was a screw missing for that knife? Take them knifes off and get em sharpened, Drop that pan down and push them leaves in, that"s what it's for, Wear long pants , I saw better legs on a chicken! and for your sake, WEAR SAFTY GLASSES AND MUFFS ! I have one just like that, keep them knifes sharp and it"ll do 2" no problem, don"t force it, let the machine do the work.
