      Max Yuryev I'm looking for a comparison like this between 2017 MBP tb 13" vs 2017 MBP tb 15". Can't find it anywhere and there are a bunch of other people looking for it too in Reddit. Can you do it? I mean you're the only one who can do this, the only one I trust to review it. Good job btw!

      Max, do you feel Apple has reacted correctly to the outcry of its consumer base and competition? Are they in the right track or is is too little to late? What are the differences between Apple's response and Canon's? I feel they are in a similar situation.

      Sorry, can't do it as I don't have a 2015, but I 17 got a major bump in CPU performance. Even the base model 2017 without touchbar outperforms the highest end 2016 13" i7 with Touchbar and the graphics have seen some good improvement too. I would bet the speed increases are really good!

    • @coxipops
      @coxipops 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max Yuryev really so the 2017 base model no touch bar outperforms a fully loaded 2016 4 USB-C port MBP?

      It is ironic that after all the FCPX vs Premier wars. Premier users are switching to Resolve. Than means that despite the wrong execution path there was method in their madness. NELs needed to be rewritten with a fresh new set of Ideas.

      But wasn't background rendering turned off in this test for FCP? So really FCP would be the fastest option because it wouldn't have to render while exporting out.

    Why one piece iMac 4k or iMac Pro 5k can not increase more refresh rate than *60 Hz?* I think the *heat issue* for computer screens with higher resolution and higher refresh rate. 😎 I bought Samsung 3D HDTV *120 Hz* in 2010 for *watching slow & fast motion picture & games is very smooth.* HDTV or 4k TV with higher refresh rate up to 240 Hz is ok because it does not consume more power for heavy computing like pro computers do. Some smart phones have very high 960 fps video for super smooth slow motion.

    Great video Max! Love the comparisons. You really did a good job illustrating the improvements of the new imac. I love the animated graphics of the charts too. I'd love to see a comparison of the 16 core thread ripper Ryzen vs intel or maybe 16 core Ryzen vs mac FCP. Personally I have a PC with Premiere Pro and I must have something faster. 4k 60fps just sucks to try to edit.

  • @myrudram
    @myrudram 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Max... I hope you read my comment !!
    Sorry, but I really don't understand what you are saying, i.e., what conclusion you are coming to. Yes, I do get the scores you are talking about. What I fail to comprehend is their application to usage. So, for example, I follow reviews of the iMac that range in opinion. Some say the lower end models are fine for video editing, rendering and photo editing. Other reviews claim it's best to get the most computer for the optimal interface experience. My point here is how much power and memory is really needed to comfortably get by with one of these machines. If I invest in a low end model @ $1000 will I still manage fine with only minor time delays between functions? Do I need a mid range or hi end model to alleviate the painful time delays associated with a $1000 entry level iMac?
    All the numbers you post in this video may mean something to you. However, they are being stated so quickly and I have no idea how all your research data translates into my everyday use that I am left more confused after listening to all of this. I am requesting a translation of your research into layman's terms as it applies to different usages associated with the iMac.
    Yes, this computer is capable of pro performance levels. But, they come at a price that is generally too much of a reach for many people to justify. Am I spending too much money on this computer with specs that only make a slight difference in my everyday use or is the investment in a pricier model going to be worth it for my everyday operations?
    Perhaps by breaking it down in 3 categories of user need with each category being at a different price point. Hi-end/pro level graphics and video editing ($3000), mid-range/ intermediate level ($2000) and lo-end/web surfing with lite weight applications ($1000).
    I have learned that two factors generally apply when deciding which tech to buy - 1.) budget and 2.)what I need the device for. This is why I am suggesting a review with these parameters as guidelines to better apply the fine research you have done into a more "digestible" format that may be more meaningful to the general public.
    Thank you.

      Adobe is lazy... they did not improve anything for almost 10 years. I was in love with Premiere.
      But now I see how the hardware evolved with Adobe liminting it like it was the same hardware as 10 years ago !
      I think as long as pro users are reluctent to leave their software habits, they'll rely on that to sell their antique softs at a very expansive price.
      A 4 cores 32gb RAM can handle 4k... in Resolve or Final cut while an 8 core with 64gb of Ram with a Titan X will struggle to handle the same project !
      JNACCEPTABLE !

    how about a photoshop comparison. it's horrible! my mac pro sucked at Photoshop with a 4K screen. now the iMac on a 5k screen is dramatic. not talking about a plugin or resize functionality. just clicking on a layer on or off takes seconds in certain cases. it's probably just like with premiere, only new features to sell but no optimisation :-( `i could sent you some desktop movies to show the issue if you are intereseted, keep up the good work, i am not a video editor but enjoy your video's a lot. thanks, Mark

    great video max! been a subscriber for a long long time! max, do you think the top end imac with 8gb graphics card and maxed out memory will be able to edit 4k prores or even raw in fcpx and resolve? not really a computer guy so im trying to stay away from building a hackintosh or pc from scratch cos im gonna mess it up i know. lol. the jobs im shooting now are mainly 4k prores, but i will get a c200 or ursa min 4.6k or maybe a red, so i will need a computer that is able to edit raw 4k footage. do you think the 8gb graphics imac will cut it? i can get an external graphics card if necessary, and i can use 1/4 resolution when editing. but i don really want to render everything to optimized media before editing cos it takes too much time. thanks so much! !

    Hey Max, thanks for this great & informative video! Around the 12:45 mark you mentioned that you had used Premiere for a long while and then switched to Final cut. I was wondering if you encountered any issues when switching? I've got both programs, I'm really quick and comfortable with Premiere, but I would like to increase my skills with final cut.
    Do you do all your graphics and cutting inside final cut? It seems like every time I try to jump into final cut I end up getting frustrated pretty quickly. I think the magnetic timeline is something I haven't wrapped my head around yet. I was just wondering if you ran into the same issues or maybe if you have some advice for somebody who doesn't necessarily want to switch but just wants to get better at final cut?
    Thanks Max!!

      @techgoggles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Merrow i switched to fcpx from premiere! Its a wonderful experience when u get used to it...
      Its faster! So much faster!
      I find it easier to manage n edit on fcp than adobe!
      Only thing is, ae file dont open in fcp, so i render everything!
      For making text templates for lower thirds n all, i learned motion!

    • @EricMerrow
      @EricMerrow 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your opinion and input! Like I mentioned, I don't want to really "switch" from premiere to fcp but I would definitely like to increase my efficiency and skills in fcp. I like the speed factor that you mentioned, since the software is optimized for the mac hardware.
      So I do have another question for you. In my workflow, I can create text and shape graphics for lower 3rds or just general text on screen and then animate them directly on my sequence timeline without necessarily having to jump over to After Effects. Are you able to do the same thing in fcpx? I'm assuming you can, but I've never been able to get a project to that step before I get frustrated, haha.
      Thanks again!

    Top job - i really need these kind of videos and you are the only guy on youtube that does them right. I edit in final cut pro and im trying to hold off on the upcoming imac pro, will be interested to see how much better it is and even if i need it. I had a mac pro for years and got rid of it before it was worth nothing. It was the highest spec model at the time and i got 70 percent back for it which was good. Im currently using a top spec 2015 imac and its coping ok, but its struggling with 60fps 4k files.

    Was just reading reviews and you can't mix this RAM with apple RAM either. Well you can, but you will slow all your RAM down, and if you place them first, you Mac won't boot.
    "For people who are going to buy these RAMs to upgrade 2017 5k iMac, don't mix Kingston RAMs with Apple original RAMs, Apple original RAMs are cl17, but Kingston RAMs are cl14. It will make all memory speed down to 2133MHz.
    Original RAMs are 2 x 4GB, Kingston RAMs are 2 x 16GB, not sure about other cases.
    Also original RAMs were in dimm0 slots, I added Kingston RAMs in dimm 1 slots, iMac couldn't boot. Then swapped original RAMs to dimm1 slots, Kingston RAMs to dimm0 slots, iMac could boot successfully.
    Hope this review helps."

    Thanks for this review. I know the 2017 iMac is old today and my 2017 iMac is only the i5-7600k with 1TB ssd and maxed out ram and top GPU for this gen. I was thinking of selling it and upgrading it to the 2020 iMac but I couldn’t justify the price difference on the upgrade as I don’t do creative work full time. I only do it more as a hobby and as a 2nd job as a side hustle (mostly photographing weddings). But lately I got into more video editing and wondering is it worth it for me to upgrade my i5-7600k chip to the i7-7700k for the hyper threading performance?

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the SSD is part of the drive? If its not, you still have to unglue the display from the frame. personally I wouldn't want to. I'd rather get the SSD model and get a 5TB external drive for $120 which will be much faster as the internal hdd.

    • @tipoomaster
      @tipoomaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fusion drive is a physically separate SSD (blade) and HDD (SATA). Upgrades should be possible, but yeah, the open heart surgery required is offputting, probably should order it with all you need besides the RAM as you suggest.

    Max, the configuration of the 2015 5K iMac is the exact one I have right now. I like you bought the iMac with 8 GB of memory and then put in 32 GB of crucial.com memory. Even though the 2017 5K iMac has some nice improvements I'm going to wait for the iMac Pro. The iMac Pro is probably overkill but I so want a Xeon 8 core CPU in my next iMac. Anyway, thanks for a great thorough review. It's noticed and appreciated.

    • @jaimeduncan6167
      @jaimeduncan6167 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xeon is not necessary a good idea. Normally they don't have quick sync not all the benefits of the internal graphics. So if you run Premier, more cores will be of help, but for FCP is not clear it will be faster.

    • @cactustweeter2890
      @cactustweeter2890 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The company I work for is a Windows shop. So I need to run Windows applications and I do this through a Parallels VM. I would rather run Windows apps through a Parallels VM then give desktop space to a PC. A VM can take advantage of multiple cores. That's why I'm looking forward to Xeon 8 core iMac configuration.

      If you're comparing a 2015 i7 with M395X or 2017 i5 with 470 4GB I would get the 2015. If you can get the 2017 with i7 but the cheapest graphics then get the 2017.

    I was SO set to get a new model iMAC 5K, after holding out for that instead of the older versions, primarily because I was HOPING the new iMACs would support Target Display Rendering again... this would allow you to REUSE the iMAC as a 5K display down the road should you upgrade to something more powerful.. it'd still be good as a monitor! BUT, Apple apparently has decided to NOT bring back TDR support, which was available 2 generations ago. Sad.

    Hello
    Until the newer refreshed 2018/2019 Imac's comes out which used base model would you recommend due to huge price differences 2015 or 2017 for temporary use for 4k video editing either using proxy or 4k time line.
    Price difference between both used for base models are like £400 - £500 here in the UK.
    Don't want to buy new base or top specs i7 4.2 2017 now in mid June 2018 as there might be a newer imac just around the corner.
    Kindly advise
    Cheers.

    Max, here's something else to test. I wonder if the performance gain is because of Kaby Lake's quicksync having faster support for video or if it's the graphics card. The only way to tell is to put Resolve on a PC with a discrete GPU and without a GPU. I say this because I have a desktop with Skylake i7 6700 that struggles playing back 4K MKV, but my Kaby Lake ultrabook easily plays the same video, while using less than 5% CPU.

    Thanks Max, Nice to know there's a FCP metric; hadn't heard of it before.
    I tried Bruce X on a 8-core Mac Pro w/D500's (I'm so pissed I didn't get the D700s, and Apple won't sell me upgrade parts.... Grrrr!)
    Anyway I got 33 seconds, which I know would've been much better with D700s. I love my LG 38" curved monitor, thus, I have no interest in an iMac, and I can live with the render time, as I don't do it full time.
    I just hope the next Gen Mac Pro isn't off in the stratosphere somewhere and the keep the price close to the same.

    Hi Max, I'm on the fence and would like your advice. I'm looking to upgrade from the iMac late 2015 to the iMac pro mid level entry. I know I'll see a significant speed increase in video editing but my main question is will I see a significant increase in lightroom and photoshop. I've watched your video on the comparison between a mid 2017 model and the iMac pro but I'll be upgrading from a late 2015 model iMac with a 3TB fashion drive as oppose to any type of SSD internal drives. I have the 4ghz - i7 model late 2015 model.

    Your reviews are the best, at least for video editors. I guess Davinci is running on Metal know. When Apple announced Metal and say Adobe was going to migrate the code to Metal, my conclusion was that they wanted to kill final cut pro. Not yet but this version of Davinci add massive pressure to them.

Now for to minor nitpicks 1: for the 4x4K -2XLUT»FG each - 2 reversed test you said 38 seconnd for the 2027 resolve test wilhe the chart seays ,38 minutes = 22.8 seconds, so which is it? 2: next time you do this comparison can you pleace wait untill all 3 applications are out of beta ( resolve was in beta at the time iirc) as a beta is never as optimizced as a realeas version

      Hey Scott, I need to make a video on that. I'm using this light as my key amzn.to/2xKamfm its super powerful so even with a large softbox its only at about 75% shooting at iso100 1/50th F1.8 . I'm using this softbox amzn.to/2xK7RtE which produces very soft light. I play with the angle to adjust where shadows fall on my face and background, and its on a C-Stand because the setup with softbox is quite front heavy bhpho.to/2x0AEeQ
