  • What a guitar player... this song was released on his LP "Pink Moon" but here is a stunning home recorded version. There are many great bootlegs of Nick Drake material that feature some of his finest work, I recommend checking them out if you're a fan.

    Imagine if Nick could have known when he was recording this alone at home that 50 years down the line we'd be listening to that recording and others like it by the millions alone in our own homes. Many of us feeling exactly as he did during dark times, finding comfort in the music he left behind.

      He was such an intelligent, vulnerable and beautiful songwriter. The way he wrote about the beauty he saw was otherworldly poetic. He wasn't a singer-songwriter of his time, his music transcends time. That's why his songs will continue to be 'found' by each generation that passes.
      I feel blessed that i found his music and how much the songs of Nick Drake have given me.

  • @lollard

    He's so outside his time. He allowed his music to reflect how he really felt rather than playing to show off or entertain. He encapsulates everything that a true artist should be. He encapsulates everything the existentialists called "authenticity".

      @thewordofgord 10 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      "Sticky": agree with most of what you say, except he was not so "outside his time". Eternally beautiful yes, but part of the prog folk wave of his day. You cannot separate him from John Martyn, Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen and Roy Harper, to name but a few.

      Well, as great as those folks are, it was John Martyn who said, in response to being declared the "guv'nor" of English finger picked guitar, "The guv'nor? Nick Drake is the guv'nor." I put the Pink Moon lp up against anyone, anywhere for songs, as well as the voice and guitar performances. Up there with Robert Johnson, Lennon, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Cobain, all of 'em.

      @@thewordofgord To an extent, he was similar to those artists. But Nick's guitar playing really puts him in a different space than his contemporaries at the time. His guitar playing alongside words that emphasized those music's emotions provide a different feeling than most folk guitarists, who fingerpick and strum more-or-less the same as everyone else.

      There’s such a determined delicacy to his playing as well, it seems as though he could play as “aggressively” as he wanted and it would still end up sounding gentle and restrained. He put his entire soul into his playing.

    • @timj9418
      @timj9418 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@bmxmyth166 Excellent description. By the reports I read, he would play guitar incessantly for hours at a time, at least partly to perfect the chords and notes that he wanted to use in a song. His obsession was his way of sinking into the heart of the music that he felt compelled to play. Then it came out with such a unique combination of melancholy, longing, loneliness and despair that still manages to be beautiful. That takes a special kind of magic.

    • @timj9418
      @timj9418 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's a good point. He seemed to be very devoted to the guitar and practiced for hours to hone his craft into something not technical but entirely soulful. He had large hands and seemed to be very adept at playing the guitar, so the instrument was a natural extension of him. That strength shows up in the playing that is both bold and tender. Strange and unique qualities in his playing.

    I'm so glad I walked into a small independent record store one day about 22 years ago and I heard Cello Song playing. I had'nt heard of Nick Drake at that point. In my ignorance I thought it was Donovan ( I think he sounds a little like Donovan) so I went to the counter and asked what Donovan album is this from ( as I have quite a few Donovan albums), the man smiled and said it's Nick Drake. I left the shop with Nick Drake's compilation Way To Blue and was blown away. On some comment about Nick Drake somebody had said God always finds a way for people to find Nick Drake. That is exactly what happened to me on that very day. I walked into that shop at exactly the same time Cello Song was playing. Still one of my favourite's because it was the first one I heard. I have Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. Also some rarities compilations.
    God found a way for me to find Nick Drake on that sunny day 22 years ago. Thank You. ✌️

      Couldn't have put it any better, friend. Back in 2000 when I was living in LA I was out buying records at the HMV on Sunset one Sunday after partying all night. Stumbled on the Way to Blue compilation at one of those listening stations and was blown away. Add to the fact that I realized much later after buying it that Pink Moon was the song from "that commercial". Didn't matter; there were tons of other songs that completely held me in a trance. Most of all Northern Sky.

      +Ryan Montgomery Was pleased to see that you're on Spotify as well. Just listened to One More Day, and absolutely loved the sound. Will do more tomorrow, as it's stupidly late at the moment, but I loved its structure.

      +Ryan Montgomery Okay, so I lied; I just jumped to My Friend after One More Day, and I absolutely loved it. I'm not a musician, so I don't know how to explain WHY I love it, but suffice it to say I love when music catches me unawares. When it surprises me. This song, the guitar... I don't know how to describe it. It's not dissonance, I think? And it's not "false"? It's just... DIFFERENT. If you know what word to use, I'd love to be enlightened; the use is clearly by design. I can't wait for tomorrow to listen to the rest, but that was just stellar. It makes me laugh, in a good way - like Friska Viljor's "Streetlights" does. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Thank you for making interesting music.

    Nicks music hits me with a barrage of emotions every time I listen to him, peacefulness, sadness, empathy, and probably most prominent- bittersweet happiness. My mind is always filled with what-ifs when I listen to him. What if he would of developed a fan base when he was alive, what if he found his lover, what if he had just one fan tell him how much of an impact his music would have on the world.. I believe it was in a documentary where Nick said he wished he could hear one person say..

    This is a gorgeous, aching, painfully beautiful version of the song. Very raw, totally unpretentious and intimate, with Nick Drake singing lyrics that are emotionally searing. Such music is indescribable but very precious. For those who haven't heard the alternate (home recording?) version of "Parasite" posted on this site (titled "Parasite I"), I highly recommend that to you. It's so harrowing that it's strangely scary.

    I've known of Nick Drake for years but only recently have I started exploring his work. I feel that his early death is one of the great tragedies of popular music. I am often deeply moved when listening to his songs & "Place to be" is a strong favourite at the time of writing. One thing this home recording shows is Nick Drake's impressive guitar technique. He may been a very sensitive artist but he had a very robust technical facility when it came to guitar. Many thanks for uploading this.

    I had enough of staying to long without a job.
    I had enough of being without income and waiting for people to be generous with me.
    I had enough of being the sain person the perfect image of loving when in fact I'm rottine inside.
    I had enough of my mother hurtful self degrading talk no matter what I do never seem to pleasing her.
    I had enough of being helpless to my father.
    I had enough being lonely to never felt someone skin against mine or there presence in my life.
    I had enough of waiting for fate to make decisions about my life.
    I had enough of living life.
    I had enough writing the script of my life and never managed to do half of my daydreaming in life.
    I had enough every time I trust my self by taking the right decision but I end up braking my promise.
    I just had enough in the name of whoever's decided to create me and forget about me.
