For those of us who have lots of pets that eat crickets, and find it more convenient and cost effective to just breed our own feeders, this is a fantastic idea, and a wonderful video. Thank you.
thank you!!!! this works awesome. I was skeptical but I already had the same bin and extra PC components laying around. No smell to the point I keep under the living room tank!
THANK YOU for this video! I watched it and setup a nearly identical box. My intake for air is PVC and a PC fan like yours. I used a 90' elbow directly into the box. On the outtake side, i used PVC as well, directly into the box. However, it is going directly into an air purifier. Like yours, I have no odors! As you've pointed out, ventilation is key, as well as feeding/water source, and picking out any die off. I would also add, the dish you offer a water resource, should be VERY shallow. I made the mistake of using one with 1" depth, and they will smother each other to stay next to water. Use a lid of some form that has very little lip to it.
Thank you for your video. My guess is that your ventilation is overkill. To save some electricity you could try running the fans on the 5 volt rail instead of the 12 volt rails. Using the 5 volt rail will create less noise and about 1/6th of the energy your using now while still providing plenty of ventilation, and your fans will run practically forever. Another idea is that you could put just one fan on the 5v rail and vent outside your home without any filter resistance, thus reducing your power consumption to 1/12th of what your using now. By the way, how long is your filter lasting?
@massivecommshot Yes I am. Although they could be kind of expensive, within a 3 month period you will have easily multiplied your colony by 3 or 4. Buy a rubbermaid bin, cheap heat mat, lots of egg cartons, and water gel then your set. Feed them ground up dog food and oranges (increases birth rate and numbers). It is very easy when you have everything set up. And they don't die left and right like crix. Hope this helped.
im sure youve made a new one by now but just thinking you could put a 90 degree angle on the filter so it stands vertical and the end cap sits on the ground relieving the stress on the box, also ditch the pc power supply and use a standard 12v 1 amp cell phone charger to power those pc fans, it works great, and wont be such a fire hazard.
Very well done! explaination without bable. I would have liked a bit more detail on the filter (being the key to the success) I understand how it works, & how to mount it but it's actual composition is unfamiliar to me.
@evvdcaec Wet paper towels will work just fine as long as you remember to keep them sprayed and moist. The problem with paper towel is that it is a perfectly suited breeding ground for bacteria and needs to be changed quite often (change them whenever they're dirty). I recommend water crystals because they are very low maintenance (throw more in when you don't see many) and it's easy to buy water crystals with calcium and gut load already added.
@BeardedNewfies what/where do your cricket lay their eggs? love the ventaliation idea, i just dont use a lid on a tall container but I get a mild smell.
For the pc fans you just need to find a ac to dc adapter that all sorts of devices use, just look on the transformer part "what plugs into the wall" and make sure it says 12v dc. most are high enough amp to pull 2 pc fans, just cut the device plug end off and wire em up
This is brilliant but I don't think I have the electronic know how to put that together. Where does the air go? I'm not clear on that. Does it just circulate around inside the bin or is there some out-take tube somewhere that blows it outside your house?
Yeah, the initial purchase may be more expensive, though you can still find 100 mixed with a couple breeding pairs for $25 shipped. But everything after that is not only cheaper, but better for your animals. Nutritional value should always outweigh cost, especially in this reasonable price range.
Very informative video. Thanks so much for sharing your design. I look forward to building this myself. Could you message me so I can get more specific technical details on this? Thanks!
I keep them in 106 qt plastic bin no lid use at any time. Occassionally ill shake the egg carton material so the poop stuck in there falls to the bottom. Tried using cereal substrate, coco coir substrate, and oatmeal substrate. Coco coir has the least smell, risk of contamination, but I cant "suggest" where the cricket lay their eggs like I can with oatmeal/cereal substrates. Soil/coco coir mix is a a plastic container is great for cricket egg placement. Where do your crickets lay their eggs?!
Can you explain more about the carbon filter? I'm lost on that count despite having everything else needed to build this. Could you please tell what the item is and the brand name so I can go ahead and look it up? Thank you!
Cool idea and video... But I have been breeding crickets for years... Mine have no noticeable smell. I keep a thin layer of vermiculite about 1/2 an inch deep on the floor of my bins. Never had any problem with smell at all.... I'm kinda wondering how on earth people get their crickets to smell? I hear a lot of people say crickets stink really bad and I'm like... What? Really? How? I don't keep a lid on my bins as it is not needed as long as the sides are smooth and 6 inches or more above the highest point the crickets have access to in the bin. I have thousands and thousands of crickets. I could keep them in my living room as they don't smell in the slightest.
Looks pretty easy really, I could probably throw that together in an hour for less than $50 in parts. I have one bearded dragon and just keeping a week's supply of crickets for him stinks pretty bad, if I had a few full grown beardies and wanted hundreds of crickets at a time I'd do this.
i have a problem..every summer i get fruit flies in my crix bins i tried everything i feed the crix dry cat food and i use wet paper towels, paper towels r changed daily any few crix that died r taken out so the flies don't start laying eggs.i try to keep the crix clean as possible.i don't use any fruits to feed the crix i do use white vinegar mix with hot water in a spray bottle to disinfect the crix bins.can u help me out here to stop this problem or am i doing something wrong thanks
+john burford From newly hatched cricket to the end of its life is six weeks. Takes eleven days for the eggs to hatch if temperature is between 80 - 95 F.
well of course its a get idea but having that means emptying out your wallet for some fukin crickets. I just ordered my first 1k crickets and if it stinks that bad then ill just leave them in the garage with a heating pad no big deal. cool ass setup though.

There is always a critic. This is very well done. You should be proud. Nice work!
Thanks Troll

nice!!! that vent looks easy to build all i need is the filter i have like 5 pc fans!!!.............................PC MASTER RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!
dam so rich man

First thing first, your a genius, second you should make a tutorial of what you got and how to put it together! Nice vid tho

Kan U give me a step by step on how to make the fan ventilation system for the cricket tank??? Thankz!!!
R Smith detailed explanation would be helpful yes

Excellent video! Thank you! Do you know if it is better to keep crickets in a clear container or dark container?
@massivecommshot Glad to help.

Thanks this video was really helpful to me my house smells like shit.
Wow that was such a great idea im going to build it tomorrow lol:-) thanks
Definitely using this method!
I used to get rid of the pot smell when i grew it using this method.
you should show exactly how to build the exhaust system piece by piece. Would help instead of just saying, use this this this and this
Very informative video. Thanks so much for sharing your design. I look forward to building this myself. Could you message me so I can get more specific technical details on this? Thanks!
This dude is a mad scientist.
SUPER helpful!!
Hey can you please make a video on how to EXACTLY how to put the filter together
just go with roaches. Much easier to care for and no smell. Also they give birth to live young and have a much better meat to shell ratio.
He is genius!
Great Idea and I have the fans laying around lol.... nice
You should make and sell these. I would seriously pay like 20-40 bucks for this!

i would assume all the air exchange would dehydrate the crickets if your not careful.
Can you explain more about the carbon filter? I'm lost on that count despite having everything else needed to build this. Could you please tell what the item is and the brand name so I can go ahead and look it up? Thank you!
need more detail on the wiring and how you build the two stage filter. I know the composition by not how it is put together. I have paid attention!!
This is amazing!

Maybe it is the species??? I breed the Jamaican Cricket (Gryllus assimilis) and Black Field Crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus). No smell here.
very good video thanks
depends which kind do you have, but they make some noise ;)
dude thats way too much work for cricketts. But thanks for the video
Exactly what i was thinking...lol
When you're buying 1500 crickets every two weeks, it doesn't seem like a lot of work to have smell free breeding lol.
For someone as mechanically inclined as my husband is, this would be a FUN build...and useful too!
Looks pretty easy really, I could probably throw that together in an hour for less than $50 in parts. I have one bearded dragon and just keeping a week's supply of crickets for him stinks pretty bad, if I had a few full grown beardies and wanted hundreds of crickets at a time I'd do this.
You must be single lol, crickets smell awful especially when you’re keeping thousands at a time in your home
How did you splice the wires to the power supply, and what wire did you use to extendt the fan cable length?
how do you encapsulate the activated carbon? You make large holes in the pvc pipe? What do you put the carbon in?
The two cell chargers I have at home are 5v 850mA. Where do you get a 12v 1amp charger at?
Can you tell me where you get the Active Carbon and how you construct the exhaust filter.
i just wonder what about the HEATing and the LIGHT, cos they need some light, dont they? that box is not see-through, right? otherwise great idea ;)
i have a problem..every summer i get fruit flies in my crix bins i tried everything i feed the crix dry cat food and i use wet paper towels, paper towels r changed daily any few crix that died r taken out so the flies don't start laying eggs.i try to keep the crix clean as possible.i don't use any fruits to feed the crix i do use white vinegar mix with hot water in a spray bottle to disinfect the crix bins.can u help me out here to stop this problem or am i doing something wrong

Amazing, im going to try it
Can the crickets climb the container?
How do you go about cleaning the tub?
Looks like a pretty expensive cricket setup. Do you have to leave it running all of the time?
I would guess they run all of the time...nice part is, they are computer components, which really don't take that much energy to keep running.
What's the filter part, like how did he do the inside of the pipe
What about heating and temperature control?
More details PLEASE :-)
how many crickets might I be able to house in a container this exact size?
What is the best type of crickets for human consumption?
And what type of crickets make very little or no noise at all besides the wingless ones?
Cesar Lopez and you're a sissy
Mata Pegheata oh ok sorry.
+Mata Pegheata For human consumptions the very best are the ones called cows. They also give milk!
Will foam egg containers work?
Hi do the crickets make a lot of noise?
answer: get a colony of dubia roaches. Ultimately superior in every way.
How long does it take to hatch the eggs, and to grow them out
+john burford From newly hatched cricket to the end of its life is six weeks. Takes eleven days for the eggs to hatch if temperature is between 80 - 95 F.
check out hydroponic stores and indoor grow suppliers.
can you make a video on the fan part of the video plz :D
How do I make this system?
I am going to make a breaking place but will my crickets die if i leave them outside even tho it is September ( almost winter time )
i have lots of insects no crickets but grasshoppers and those don´t smell and the other insekts too
Q. How to house crickets without smell? A. Dubia Roaches
lol Nice 👌
I think I'm just going to deal with the smell. I don't want to spend 50 bucks on fans, pipe, and filters.
man it smells awful and pvc is cheap and so are the parts he mentioned.
that sounds load ill just stick with the little bit of smell i get
pay attention...tape. watch the video again.
well, in that case they stink WORSE
Good video, just hard to hear what you're saying, lol
not allot.
well of course its a get idea but having that means emptying out your wallet for some fukin crickets. I just ordered my first 1k crickets and if it stinks that bad then ill just leave them in the garage with a heating pad no big deal. cool ass setup though.
yeh right. not that eazy. tell the basics
new problem, how to make it look good lol (its to big)
my crickets dont stank
Birdreptile hi can you tell me how to keep them without the smell I'm getting a bearded dragon first time owner need no how not to have the smeel
too complicated =(
Hahaha😂
Over kill !!!!
just made a vid for ya
Roaches won't smell even without all that
Johanan Micaiah your just used to the smell in your house lol you got roaches
Alpha smurf No, roaches don't have a bad smell like crickets do... And they're far more nutritious, don't jump, fly, or bite
What if where you live there isn't any Dubia roaches
Crickets only stink if there's rotting dead corpses.
