    I have an avocado tree grown from seed which is now around 10 ft tall. I moved it from greenhouse to a polycrub. I am based in NW Highlands which has very mild winters, but summers are not hot. Thanks for the leaf tip which I will try. I think I may have a Guatamala variety. Growing for fun.

    Great video, thank you. Me and my son have grown a few from the stone out of supermarket avocados and they're a couple of feet tall now, but I didn't know about pinching out the top leaves or anything so they're basically a stick with leaves all up and down it! I'm going to try again soon. We live on the Isle of Man so I'll have to be careful with the frost. Thank you for your help. (Oh also, I think I might have a Mexican variety!)

    I have about 8 avocado seeds growing currently. No idea which varieties they are but half have roots on so far and a couple have a shoot and I also have a tree which from reading the comments i think it has leaf burn from all the hot weather we have had over the last few weeks. Was wondering what was wrong with it but now can fix it :)

    planted out my supermarket avocado when it started to grow in a pot. it shot up to 10 ft or more after 7 years. Then my parents made me cut it down because they were worried it would get under the house foundations. very sad that day. But i grown some more in pots and will plant some in their country house which has more land😁. Have you checked out Joe's Tropical channel. he filmed a massive 30ft tree growing and with loads of fruit in london. just spectacular

  • @jameshackney9391
    @jameshackney9391 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I took a load of half rat eaten avocado pits from the compost heap, as they’d all responded to the attack by sending out multiple shoots.
    Bear in mind these were also directly covered in snow by the beast from the east. They’re hardier than we think.
    Either way, not a single ‘abused’ pit has given up and died. The previously chewed up plants are looking incredibly strong and healthy. They will just ‘bush’, rather than have a single stem. They’re at about 4 foot tall now.
    I wish I knew which variety they all are.

    The Bacon avocado isn't a patch on the Hass or the Lamb Hass though flavour wise, which is why they're marketed as 'low fat' etc, almost as though they have to find some kind of redeeming features for them. It's just lucky the propagator was misleadingly named James Bacon, and they sound better than they actually are, or else most people wouldn't discover they taste completely different to the avocados they're used to, until after they've thought "Mmmm bacon* and bought a bunch. I bought a whole crate and was bitterly disappointed. If they're the only ones that would fruit in the UK, I'd definitely pass.

    I put 2 avocado stones in water November 2017 & both worked. I’m not a gardener what so ever, I usually kill everything so was so pleased! They both took 4 months to root. They are now huge. I’m so proud of them 🤣 I’m scared to put them outside as when I was doing so last summer (just taking them outside to get some sunlight) the leaves burnt! Ive just started a new stone about 7 weeks ago & it’s already cracked ☺️ exciting! I live in Suffolk UK, it’s quite warm here (for uk weather) so I’m hoping they will fruit one day

      Hope the ones you had and other plants are okay now. Sounds like you had a particularly hard winter and nothing will take well to that. Don't forget that initially many of the Mediterranean didn't really have that many plants in the first place, they were put there by other cultures and sometimes they will still just not be happy in come hot, cold, wet or dry weather. People in the UK complain we buy plants from everywhere else and don't grown our own but that is because we didn't even know they existed as we didn't travel much so in some ways we can manage perfectly well with what does grow well, apples, plums, etc., and stop hankering after the rest we wont starve - whatever happens with Brexit!

      Roby babe hi there. A ‘bacon’ avocado tree is quite a large tree. It has quite an upright growth habit, so will want to be planted somewhere it won’t shade out other plants. I got mine as a year old grafted tree from a nursery called Scarlett’s nursery in West bergolt, Essex, UK. You can find them online and email or phone them to inquire. They import citrus and subtropicals. You could also grow it from seed if you can find the bacon variety fruit in store. Regards Chris

This year I potted them , are on my kitchen window sill. These seeds were from a dark avocado not the green one. Don't know which country these are from but a lovely plants. 😊👍🏻

    I'm qurious if I might be able to grow avocados here in the Netherlands.
    We're in about zone 8.
    I heard from an experiment with mangos in a climate that was just a bit to cold:
    Someone planted loads of young trees in a field and took the seeds from the few that survived winter to do it again.
    Could such an experiment work. (Exept from the large field I do not possess. On the other hand the lost wil be less due to the microclimate in town.)

    • @gotropicaluk8362

      Henry Douthwaite avocados love warm/hot conditions. So a sheltered south facing wall (assuming you live in the northern hemisphere) will provide it with lots of sunshine and also keep out cold north winds. All the best.

    I'm looking forward to seeing a follow-on video, updating progress with the 'Bacon' avocado: I'm particularly interested in how much vertical growth it's made, since you planted it, though it's probably bushed out since then.
    It's a great shame that Scarletts in Essex no longer import avocado trees (from Spain), due to the Xylella outbreak in Europe, though a wise move as this would present a real threat to UK trees, given that this bacterial infection hasn't yet reached our shores. I've looked elsewhere in the UK, but am unable to source any grafted avocado trees with significant cold tolerance like 'Bacon'. In fact, the only horticultural outlet I could find that sells grafted avocado in the UK was the victoriananursery.co.uk, but that's limited to Hass only, which appears to be only tolerant to cold down to -1 degrees C.
    Because of the unavailability of any choice in avocado cultivars for sale in the UK , I thought I'd try growing my own, hopefully picking up any genetic variability in cold-tolerance that there may exist in shop-bought fruit. However choice of avocados for sale seems really limited. I keep a close eye on Morrisons, Asda, Lidl and Tesco, but they don't seem to stock the more cold-tolerant Mexican cultivars. All I've seen on their display shelves is Hass (mainly), with the occasional Fuerte and Pinkerton fruit.
    So I've attempted to grow my own from shop-bought fruit. I've succeeded in growing a small tree from a Hass avocado stone, outdoors on an allotment here in Hastings, UK - it survived the winter (used combined fleece & cloche covers to reduce our coldest night of -6 C down to -1.5 C under the covers), now in it's second year (2019) of growth, around 50 cm tall, looking very robust and healthy with very large attractive shiny leaves. The allotment is naturally sloping (1:4 gradient), which probably stops the roots getting too wet, particularly in Winter. Encouraged by this success, I germinated three Fuerte stones this year, and the tree seedlings are now growing well on the allotment, shaded with fine netting to protect from any strong summer sun. Next year, I'm going to try Hass stones derived from Spanish imported fruit, as I've heard that the pollinator for Hass trees in Spain is 'Brogdon', so some cold-tolerance & tolerance to wetter conditions, characteristic of Brogdon, may be inherited within the Brogden-Hass hybrids. This might be better suited to our local coastal environment, which I think is a bit wetter than Ipswich.

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Azure2019 The bacon tree in my video survived the ‘beast from the east’ winter only to die during our summer last year... I’m not sure why...
      But the experience has been a positive one, because if a young ‘bacon’ tree can survive a winter like that then I think avocados are possible to do.
      Mexican avocados are certainly in short supply here in UK if at all, and so I am in the process of looking further afield to get seeds from Mexican avocado trees which are much hardier, than the usual ‘bacon’ and ‘Fuerte’.
      I have seen ‘Hass’ trees for sale in the uk, but really they are a waste of time, as they are to frost sensitive.
      I’m hoping over the next few months to have some varieties from seed on the go, which are not only hardy to a UK micro climate but that will also ripen fruit earlier than the usual commercial ones.

      @@gotropicaluk8362 That's a real shame about the Bacon tree - Summer 2018 was very hot and dry - the prolonged and intense heatwave was exceptional, at least for UK conditions. I can only guess that your Bacon tree may have suffered either from inadequate water supply, or inadequate shading in the hot intense sun, or both. I notice that during the heatwave, my avocado tree stopped growing when the soil got too dry and compact, and leaves lost their attractive lustre and became slightly chlorotic. After transplanting to better soil on a slope in Spring 2019 (its 2nd year), it started to regrow, and seems to put on a significant growth spurt whenever we have torrential summer downpours (twice so far during Summer 2019).
      Do let me know if you are able to source any seed for the more cold-hardy Mexican cultivars, which I've yet to come across. After the usual UK supermarkets and small grocers, I'm not sure where to look. I'm also interested in running a large trial at the allotment, in an effort to screen for cold-tolerance.

    • @Azure-yl7jo
      @Azure-yl7jo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though victoriananursery.co.uk only sell grafted Hass plants, I asked them what rootstock is used, as it it might be more cold tolerant than Hass. They said they believed it to be Lula, a Southern Florida cultivar, and like Bacon tolerant to around -3.8 C or 25 F (not to be confused with Lila, tolerant to -9.4 C or 15 F). The question is, would decapitating a grafted Hass, release apical dominance over the rootstock, and allow Lula to grow out? I think this would be a bit of a gamble, but it might work.

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Azure2019 it certainly is a gamble, especially when your paying nearly £40 for the hass, although it is totally possible. If you pruned the hass variety off you would get one of the Spanish rootstocks probably grow. You just probably wouldn’t know which... I’ve just managed to get some seed sent from Texas of 3 Mexican varieties. (Mexicola grande, del Rio, and fantastic). Im hoping to make these varieties more available in the UK. All these trees have a hardiness down to around -8. So worth trying here.

      Frank Williams do you remember what the avocado fruit was you grew it from? Dark skin Hass? (Guatemalan) green skin Bacon? Fuerte? (Mexican) You can see what each fruit looks like online. Growing from seed is likely to be a hybrid, but there are few things you can do. Do the new leaves flush red?(Mexican) Do the leaves have a liquorice, aniseed, smell to them when crushed? (Mexican) no smell would be a Guatemalan. Does the stem on new growth have red flecks? (Bacon) or are they just green? (Hass). There’s no exact method of telling until the tree produces, but these are some ways to give you an idea of the type tree you have. Chris

      Gunita Wilson I will cover the tree all the way to the ground with either a frost cloth or bubble wrap. I hammer in 4 wood stakes around the tree and this works as the frame. The idea is to keep the cloth or bubble wrap off the leaves (as cold could penetrate where it’s touching) so you create a mini greenhouse. Chris

    • @Azure-yl7jo

      You're a bit further north than me - I'm on the south-east coast and my avocado tree (sprouted from a Hass stone) survived the winter outdoors and is in now it's second year - it's almost two-fool tall. The key is to protect it from frost and shade it from strong summer sun: you'll need to check the weather every day in winter and cover it with fleece when frost expected. I've planted mine on a slope (1-in-4) to avoid water-logging in winter.

      GoTropicalUK do ya need male and females ?

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lone Wolf avocados normally fall into 2 types. They are simply called A type or a B type. The types basically determine the order in which the flowers open. So one type (let's say B type) the female opens first and on the other type (the A type) the male is open first. A single avocado tree will produce both male and female flowers and will to some extent pollinate itself. But to in order to get good pollination you would plant 1 A type avocado and 1 B type of avocado, so that you get a better cross pollination of male and female flowers being open at the same time. Hope that makes sense. You can easily google which variety of avocado falls under a A or B type.

    Hello there, I'm from Athens, Greece.
    During the pre-last heavy snowing in Athens, which was about -6 for several days, the majority of our avocado trees did survived, while even lemon and orange trees burned from the frost!
    I haven't tried the Bacon variety, however I'd say it should be more even more frost tolerant than the Mexican or the Guatemalan varieties, since they're fine with such temperatures.

      Danial Mehmood not really they are fairly trouble free. There only problems come from soil that is to wet, which will encourage root rot fungi. So make sure they are planted in well draining soil, and you should be fine.
