Learn to use your pegs! Peg work (combo pre-requisites) on my 2021 Big Ripper. Part 1

  • I’ve never wanted to do combo’s on the bike … but I always wanted to learn how to ride the pegs cleanly and effortlessly, so I needed to figure out how to go about learning, without getting too banged up!
Step one, make sure your rear brakes are good, and can hold you entire weight on the back wheel. I don’t know how many times I jumped up and down on the pegs, only to have my brakes slip, and the bike shoot out in front of me … leaving me flat on my butt, sprawled out on my back, or speared with the front of the seat (horrible, seriously horrible experience, do not recommend).
Step two, get knurled pegs if you don’t have any.
Step three, find a nice flat area to practice. I prefer something a little bigger like a parking lot so you can roll around and practice “popping up” into a peg hop, but if space is limited, I’ve can also say I’ve spent time just hopping in my backyard by stepping up into the pegs while the bike was upright.
Step four: for riding the pegs, I recommend finding a gentle hill that you can practice rolling down. It really helps keep your momentum because the natural inclination is to “over-brake” and then the peg manual is too short to really learn anything from. You need some speed so you can focus on learning to carry the balance point. Just don’t go ripping down some super steep hill without getting some experience first!!
Peg hopping is a great core workout, more than I expected, so I would say the hopping is something you will build up to, and also see improvement along with your fitness level. I generally hop 15-20 times in a row, but have done as high as fifty one afternoon … not sure why but everything clicked and I was in the zone.
As for riding wheelies on the pegs (peg work, also known as peg manuals) this seems to be a steep learning curve at first, but then once you get the hang of it, you progress quickly. At least with both feet on the pegs. I’m still learning how to ride for long distances with just one foot on, and the other foot/leg swinging back and forth to maintain my balance.
Peg work is the fundamental piece for all combo’s, seat hops, and more advanced balance tricks that can add flair to your riding style. On long downhills, standing up on the pegs can be a way to conserve energy, but the real trick (for me) is being able to cleanly get back off the pegs and onto the pedals to continue the wheelie. I’m still working on that, though I’ve landed it a few times.
    Practice makes progress!!
Other quick shorts in this video: Fakie, and. Manual pedal hop. Happy to have learning this from Matt Rickard during the #socalbmxride from downtown LA to Laguna Beach over 3 days riding.
Other bonus clips from @maniacc_B on IG who caught me at Lake Merritt in Oakland just cruising along.
You may have noticed I’m not riding my customary Sunday Bikes High-C, but have shifted to an SE Bikes Big Ripper from City Grounds online store. This is because I believe variety forces you to adapt, and also because I’d like to do more head-to-head bike comparisons and riding videos … so subscribe so you can stay tuned for that review vid, and also reviews for the 2021 Monster Quad and 2021 Fast Ripper …. (Yes, I’m that lucky and blessed).
Please drop a like and a comment if you enjoyed the video, or just enjoy seeing the progression.
    Thanks for watching!!

@@Nate1688 no worries at all! I think that Facebook Marketplace is usually overpriced ... and I've seen better deals on OfferUp, so I'd be checking there. Good Luck and hope to see you at one of the rideouts/takeovers soon!

It’s different for sure. Feels a lot longer, and the tires are a massive difference, The 2.4” Bozacks are super soft and cushy, and I’ve never been a fan of the Maxxis Torch because it’s a flatter, more straight line tire, and I was always getting flats with them. The Maxxis Torch is super light, though, I mean, it feels like there’s some wrong when you’re used to a heavier tire like the S&M speedball or Maxxis Hookworm. There are pro’s and con’s to each bike, also. Within the month I aim to do a comparison video, just been tied up with work and family lately so I haven’t made it yet.
