On "My Car Story" we're in Rosemont IL on 3-9-22 at the World of Wheels Car Show.
We're looking at a 1962 Volkswagen Beetle & matching Allstate Single Wheel Trailer.
The car's Owner is Paul Fionda. Paul’s had this car since 2018. Paul shares he wanted his “California Beetle” to be unique, so he found an Allstate Single Wheel Trailer and custom painted it to match his car. I think it’s very “California Cool”.

I love the early bugs. They're like mini American '30's/'40's cars. I love the accessories on this one. Those swamp coolers are highly collectible and valuable.

my family had a one-wheel trailer and a bug when I was a kid. I have never seen this combo on the road. My dad used to tell me he had an emergency gas tank and he could pull a lever under the seat, which was just to keep me from worrying about low gas. What a beautiful combo!

Our first '2nd car' was a 1963 Beetle purchased in 1971 for $400. The running boards fell off and my Dad blew the engine on a fishing trip with his brother. Leading to the purchase of a new '72 Beetle, then a '75 which was the car I took my license test with. 😊

I remember that windshield washer system from my ‘64 VW Notchback. Always thought it was a neat idea until there wasn’t enough pressure to operate it. The single wheel trailer was a neat idea, I went on a trip with my sister and brother in-law to Cape Breton when I was 16. It was sort of a convoy with his sister and family and they had a single wheel trailer, I can remember their fear of that single little wheel traveling that far at highway speeds but it made it. Beautiful pieces of history.

Loved everyone...So great that is still on a 6 volt system and that is completely original.. A 6 volt is more than strong wnough to kick a 1300 cc . Outside Air option too... So cool. Thank-you Lou for doing a show on one of my beloved vintage Volkswagens! I have always loved the 1958-early 1964 "Herbie Generation" ("pope nose") bugs ever since the '60's. My first car was a '62 sunroof bug. I also had a white '62 sunroof bug that I decked out like Herbie during the '80s. And I had a '61 and a '63 bug as well. My only "non-QT" bug was my '66 that I had during the '70s. Oh, and my dad had a '60, painted "ceramic green" (only year for that color) like the one in my thumbnail.

Rob 1962 was the first year (Act July 61 for 62 models) to introduce a Fuel gauge. Prior year vehicles had a fuel "tap" or reserve in the front center wall of the vehicle. The problem was if you ran into reserve and forgot to flip the lever back to the standard position if you ran out of gas you really ran out. The fuel gauge location was the same 62 - 67. In 68 it was incorporated into the main speedometer housing.

In the early sixties our next door neighbor had one of these for his 'work' car along with a Buick Wildcat 4-door for the 'family' car. The '62 was terrific 'cause the introduced the gas gauge, but it still had the smaller windows. The level of quality on these cars was just so far above any of the American-made cars, even the luxury ones, that it's no wonder they were so successful. This little boy was also around an English Ford Anglia bought at the Ford dealer for the same purpose; give my uncle hell for a couple of years until he replaced it with a Chevy II...

I bought a '62 sunroof when stationed at the NATO HQ in Naples, Italy. A similar color called turquoise. Cost was $1275 U. S. dollars. Drove all over Europe. Brought it back with 38K miles. Turned out not to like cold weather and never would start so I had to park on a hill and kick it in. The local VW dealer claimed they couldn't find any reason. Traded on a Triumph and was given $1,225. The bug was in beautiful condition thanks to the Italian weather. A week later I had to stop at the dealer and there was my Beetle on the lot. I peered in and saw the odometer had been turned back to 18K miles.

Growing up my best friend’s father drove nothing but tired old VW’s. Here in Wisconsin the rockers would rust out after 6 or 7 years and you would be left with no way to heat the interior or more importantly, defrost the windshield. I still remember the commercials showing the ease of service on VW’s with X number of bolts to remove a fender or even the engine.

Good Eye...This is a 1962 Herbie was a 1963 Beetle. Very little difference between the years. One easy thing to notice is Some had the Amber Peanut front turn signals 64 were amber but a wider design. Also if the motor is original in 63 VW went to what they called "fresh air" vs "Stale Air" motor design. You would notice 2 tubes coming out of the fan shroud that connect to the tins that surround the motor to draw in fresh air into the motor.

Beautiful. I had several VW bugs including a black 1962. I have to say that growing up in So. Calif where every other car was a VW. I NEVER saw one with a roof rack or rear sun shades but now they seem to be common at the car shows! I love it!

Very nice with unusual additions! And that swamp cooler for a car? Never heard or seen one until now, wow! I had a '67 bug in high school (74-75) Fender wells altered for bigger tires/Chrome wheels and I had headers with a cherry bomb like exhaust, but all original otherwise, medium blue off white interior. $4 to fill it up then (.25 a gallon) to drive two weeks! Loved it. Another wish I still had it.

Nice looking Beetle. The trailer is interesting with it's single caster wheel. The car is in mint condition, and the engine sounded healthy. The only disappointment is that once again, this is another indoor venue car show where there's limitations on how long a car can run.

He's got himself a neat Beetle with all the goodies! We had our second-hand black 60 with sunroof when my dad was stationed at Chanute AFB in the 60s. I also road in that space between the back seat and engine. As for that Allstate trailer, that's the first time I've seen something like that. Was this the Sears store brand Allstate, or a different Allstate?

Michael - The Allstate trailer debuted in the Sears catalog in 1939 with a wooden box trailer, after a few variations to the original Sears offered this steel box trailer in 1953 which lasted until approximately 1960 before it was redesigned again.

Kimosabbe, One of the major problems in those times with all cars.....rust. Metals werent treated like today and the heater boxes would rust out in a few years. This car spent nearly it entire life in TX and CA before I found it and I can tell you first hand the heat cranks in this little car to the point where I have to turn it doe or completely off pretty quickly.
