    This is gonna get REAL.
In this video, we're talking about what I wish I knew before starting nursing school…and I'm giving you all the juicy details.
I'll talk about my struggle with anxiety, how I failed every single skills checkoff we did, and how I accidentally offended someone in a shoe store that one time…
I'll be the first one to raise my hand and tell you I am not perfect.
So if you're feeling alone in nursing school, and you need a little encouragement, then this video is for YOU!

I have one more prereqs this spring to take and then I can apply to the tech portion of the RN program at my school. I will be 40 in January and as a nontraditional student with a family... going back to college changed my whole coping, anxiety, and self-worth thoughts. I was lucky that our college offers free counselors on campus that we could have an hour a week with when needed. They helped me recognize the difference between stressors and the anxiety that I had been battling over the years. I did move on to a formal therapist and am happy that I did because I feel more grounded moving forward into Spring 2021.

The single most helpful thing I've found for dealing with anxiety while I'm trying to fall asleep is listening to audiobooks of cozy mysteries in bed. Usually only takes about a chapter and a half to put me under. Sometimes, it does seem to influence my dreams, but usually not in a bad way.

Awww you are so sweet! I'm so happy our videos have helped you feel more confident in nursing school! That's my goal! :) I actually graduated nursing school a few years ago, and now I'm blessed to have the opportunity to teach nursing students, which is my life's passion and God-given gift! Do you know what area of nursing you'd like to go into after graduation?

    Christina!
I'm soooo glad to be a part of your videos and of the community! Being an older student is a very humbling experience... the younger students seem to get it right the first time, and even though I study, I'm not doing as well as I feel I should...It's a different method; I get that. And just so you know, your methods DO work-second test grade in med/surg was 13 points higher than the first test. I missed my clinical point because of illness...otherwise I would have passed. So, I'll be doing it again.
You're right about anxiety and stress being two different disorders!( I still can't say 'things') and getting help is key to understanding. The faculty want you to be successful, so they make every effort. ASK!
Anyway, much work remains before the end of Spring. I just wanted to say thanks for being out there and for your vote of confidence!
    your friend,
    Sandra

You are TOTALLY right, friend! Asking the right questions is the key to a whole bunch of things in life! I'm so happy to hear your exam grades went up! I know we've talked about this before, but I want you to know I'm always here for you! :)

    • @NursingSOS

And it's also important to remember that younger students (honestly) don't have as many responsibilities as older students. I know that's going to make someone out there mad at me for saying that... But younger students often don't have a spouse and kids, and a mortgage, or parents to take care of (of course, there are exceptions to that!). So don't be too hard on yourself that it takes you twice as long to do things, you've got a lot more going on in life!

I loved your share about anxiety. I got into counseling for stress/anxiety about three months before nursing school and it has been the best help ever. Who knew that an hour a week (yeah, I splurged) could make me the energizer bunny of confidence and positivity I am now. But more than that, some instructors are just DRILL SERGEANT mean! And the counseling taught me how to keep me from taking it personally, or letting it wound me, and focus on my own improvement. Anyway, THANK YOU for these videos! You rock!

Thank you so much for your videos I'm starting practical nursing program in 2 days and just started watching your videos and it is a blessing. I went through the same in massage therapy school but I made it even though I struggled a lot but I was able to get through with the help of my friend and teacher who was constantly reminded me that I am worthy and I can do it and I finally believed it and graduated with my whole class. Due to injuries wasn't able to continue as massage therapist, and here I am taking nursing program hoping everything I learned in massage therapy will help me with nursing and more. I've also have taken pharmacy technology program and your dosage cal video was a review for me. Thank you

Omg thank you so much for this. I thought that I was just stress, but now I realized I do have anxiety. Being stuck in a bubble of endless negative thoughts. Of not being good enough. You said you went to therapy, I’m just worried about how much do I have to pay?
I’m already broke as it is. I need help but what if I can’t afford it?

I am the same way with skills! I feel like I suck so bad at skills, but my book smarts and tests are immaculate. A few years ago I took a CNA course and I failed the range of motion skill which prevented me from getting certified and it broke my heart. I felt so dumb because people who appear "goofy/slow" were passing so easily meanwhile I, the straight A student, was unable to.

Kelly Gonzalez you CAN do this! You are doing better than you think you are! Remember, you will be an AMAZING nurse that God created only YOU to be, and you CAN do this! We are here to support you, don't give up Kelly Gonzalez. There is ALWAYS a way! 😊

So before I started my prereqs, I was TERRIFIED to take A&P. Everyone said it was the hardest class and I had so much anxiety about it. What I've come to realize is that everyone's experience is different. Everyone has their own perspective. Personally, A&P wasn't that hard for me...it's the human body and I'm fascinated by it. I've found A&P to be very interesting. Lots of info, of course, but not as terrifying as I thought it was going to be. Now I'm not saying nursing school won't be hard, but I'm constantly reminding myself that everyone has a different experience and I need to do things the way that's best for me. Doing that helps me destress a bit. Of course, I am my own worst critic. Your videos have been so helpful and I can't wait to use all the resources you provide. I so appreciate the time and effort you put in to help others.
