The theater you went to seems to really care about the movie experience and aesthetics. It’s a shame many theaters don’t put a premium on that nowadays; having a much more archaic and dated look and feel.
go to reading cinemas, they tend to have more of a premium feel for the average price. reclining seats too. wayyyyy better than regular hoyts/village. AND it's basically gold class without the food.
It definitely looks like they do! But aren’t tickers like 26 bucks in Australia? 😅
I loved the homage to your little baby before you get out of the house 💜
Wow I was surprised no one had covered this movie. Thanks for reviewing this :)
I am gonna wait to stream it
“Burn the Witch” by Radiohead is one of my go-to jams for driving, too! 😮
Hell yeah 👍🏼
🎶“Scrolling with one eye open, gripping my phooone tiiighhtt.”🎶 Excited to hear you review this one!
Especially with _fantasy_ it’s so hard to adapt a book to the screen. I’ll watch Dakota Fanning even if the film is a bit wonky. I like that you talk about things like colour theory! *Is it cold in Perth?* Dying here in Southern California 🥵
Yes it’s winter in Australia.
Interesting to hear that this movie had a hype, here in Germany noone is talking about it :D
A lot of people were keen about Dakota and the book
One of the only reviewers I watch before a movie because spooky is so good at not spoiling it 👍
So now, I’m just hoping the bird doesn’t die.
I just watched it, and I had the same thought throughout the whole movie 😅
best character tbh
NOOOO! I’m a huge Birb lover. It better not. I’ll write a letter! 😂
I laughed when I saw that part shortly just before I got bored of torturing my pet bird, decided it was time to take a break and throw on a movie but after that back to the torturing.
It's called The Watchers here in Ireland too, just checked the local cinema (edit: I just checked another cinema there and it's called "The Watched" in that one). I'm not saying that to be a prick, I should really just edit it out. Did not know the film was set in Ireland, the author is probably Irish so too, so I will definitely be supporting it. Makes sense actually, because if you grow up in Ireland to a certain time, before it modernised so much, everybody watched everybody else. Commented on everybody else. It's difficult to explain. You couldn't be different in the slightest. "Who do they think they are?" kind of thing. I am doing an appalling job of explaining but it's so hard to explain something so ingrained in your culture. All that is to say, I would not be shocked if an Irish author came out with a book called "The Watchers".
I understand what you’re saying 💯 - quite familiar with eire
I was raised in a small town (at the time) Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, USA.
What you typed, it was exactly what I grew up with.
Born in 1978 and last names meant everything to those people. The watchers.
@@raidonbay Good for you because I wrote it so badly. But what you said is fascinating to me.I don't want to be too specific but I grew up in a small village just outside of Cork, Ireland. Thousands of miles apart, yet a similar phenomenon (do do, da doobi)
Your videos are so comforting
Thank you
I'm nervous to watch the film after reading (and loving) the book. I found the book really creepy and genuinely scary at some points, I feel like from the trailer they haven't gone that route which is a shame as I think they could have made it super scary!
Sounds like the film would probably disappoint you then. I’m always nervous about watching movies adapted from books I enjoyed. A film can never match my own imagination…at best it can do its own thing and do it really well, and then that’s cool. But more often they just make a mess of things 😂
@@dukeonconsidering those who've seen the film are using "fantasy" to describe the film adaptation for what was a genuinely solid horror novel, I'll assume you're right about being disappointed.
I saw it last night, and I agree with most of your points. But I thought the dialogue was really bad, the CGI towards the end was pretty rough, the ending was flat since the twist was pretty obvious around halfway through the movie. I was hoping that was a red herring to throw the audience off and we would get a different reveal than what was expected. The cinematography and look of the film was indeed great. But you're right in that I wasn't scared in the least, nor did I care for any of the characters (except the bird, who was the best character in the film). I gave it a 5/10.
totally agree, the dialogue especially was just terrible for the most part which made a lot of the acting seem flat.
100% my thought on this - the dialog really hurt the overall experience but didn't ruin the film entirely
Yeah I'd give the same rating. Maybe a 6/10 as I've seen worse ie annihilation, knock at cabin and better like Infiniti pool. This is invasion of body snatchers with a folklore bent. I honestly didn't see the twist ending where Madeleine ends up being Fey so that was nice touch.
Sounds like her dad's films. 😅
@@caseyw.6550 I wouldn't be surprised if dad directed 70% of it and she did 30% and took all the credit to help her get established in the industry. This has M Night's fingerprint all over it. 😂
For some reason, I thought it was a movie about aliens lol. I'm not really a fan of fantasy, but I'm interested in the film. I think I'll wait for it to come out on VOD. Great review, Emma!
Hey Em, I just saw this earlier on today with a group of friends. I was the only one who came out saying how much I enjoyed it, whilst everyone else was like "Eh, it was OK". I leapt online when I got back a while ago to see what other people thought (as one has to do after seeing a movie!) and I was quite surprised to see that it's largely been panned?! I totally agree with your criticisms of it, but for me (as well as you), it just intrigued me so much that I can forgive the clunkiness and extended reveal(s). I think this is a good effort from Shymalan's daughter and you can clearly tell that she's a chip off the old block. The film looks great, there are some arresting and beautiful camera work, the score is great, the performances are decent enough and even the CGI didn't completely ruin it. That shot where Mena and the old woman are hiding outside and you see a 'Watcher' scurry up to the window, stand up and kind of 'elongate' before letting out that chilling scream for the others to follow suit? Such a great and eerie moment!
This is why I always rock with your channel Em because your tastes speak to me and thousands of others.
.....and I still think that 'Exorcist: Believer' isn't as fucking terrible as everyone else makes it out to be! 😆🤘
And if we're gonna criticise anything; Did you see the trailer for that Russel Crowe horror flick, 'The Exorcism'? That was in my trailers before 'The Watched' and it looks like every single fucking done-to-death cliche shithouse possession flick under the sun?! Is that meant to be a sequel to 'The Devil's Exorcist' or something (of which I haven't seen and probably won't)?
my problem was that (maybe I’m just slow or need a rewatch) was that just the story didn’t make any sense? Like I was like what is going on the last 30 minutes but that could just be me. Overall it looks amazing but the storytelling for me it was Alot I didn’t understand but I think I need to rewatch it
A Moon Shaped Pool ❤❤❤ that was the soundtrack to my senior year of undergrad! The Numbers, Ful Stop, and Decks Dark are my favorites.
Mine was “Creep” …how time flies 😄
Love that album. If you’re into horror soundtracks try the Susperia remake one. Tom Yorke did it and it’s very nice.
Oh I love you touching the portrait of your fur baby 💜 what a beautiful tribute x could I ask about the artist you commissioned if it’s not too intrusive? I lost my 16 y.o. kitten last year and I’ve been aching to find a way of memorialising him that hit me like this x everything I searched for online at the time felt tinged by the commercialisation of my grief but being moved by another pet parent feels like such a real and beautiful way of choosing something this dear to me 💜 Thank you so much for sharing this with us x
Since intrigued and curiosity sake, was going to see it regardless. Appreciate your views & mentioning technical aspects.Your music choice chef 😗🙏 🤘🏼
Glad you got some enjoyment out of this one. I haven't struggled to stay in the theater this much since Thor: Love and Thunder.
Awe Grommy 😢❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
I just finished the book. I’m so glad you’re doing the review today! I thought the characters in the book made some weird choices, too. But I didn’t care that much because I was interested to know what was going on to create the entire situation to begin with. It was an okay book - and after seeing your review, I’m really looking forward to seeing the film!
Wow I felt the same!
First of all, hell yes Radiohead! Secondly, I wanna see this, I'm glad you reviewed it. I may catch it on a day showing when it's cheaper or wait for streaming, but it does sound like something I'll mostly enjoy. I'm really glad to be seeing more of Olwen Fouéré...she's great in everything she does!!
Fantasy freak here! I love folk horror so much ,, even when it's bad I just can't help but love it .. I very much enjoyed the watchers hehe, but I do think it's pretty niche unfortunately 🥺🥺🥺🥺
I adore Dakota Fanning. I watch anything she is in, so I will be going this weekend. Beside that, I'm an M. Night fan, so I'm excited to see his daughter making films.
Have fun!
w00t, Emma alert 🚨 New review 🎉 Don’t care if a movie sucks, still love the reviews 🚗 👩🏻🦰 🍿
w00t?? lmaoo did i just time travel back to the 2000s?? what a throwback 🤣🤣
Lol
I love when folklore and fae are in movies as I feel until a few years ago haven’t been utilized in horror as much. However there was still a lot left to be desired and some points I felt were focused on too long where others didn’t get enough context. I think I’ll definitely be reading the book.
Whether it’s good or bad, I’m watching it. Seeing results of nepotism is always interesting
First off? LOVE your nails! Secondly: the book was so entertaining and kept me hooked. I got the book because of the movie trailer. Once i read the book, the trailer became really troubling to me with what they changed lol. Piecing what i see changed in the trailer with your review tells me to approach this movie as a different story altogether lol. Thanks for your honest, fair review as always, Emma 💜
I like fantasy and intriguing films. After your review and hearing it's a middle of the road movie I'll wait for streaming. Thanks Emma I was torn on whether to see it in theatres or not, you just saved me some money. Lol
same here!
Hi Emma. Thanks for your review. I'll wait for streaming.
A cringe fantasy? The apple doesn't fall far, etc. I'm gonna give it a go. I like messy experiments.
RIGHT?! Lady in The Water …anyone??
Going to see this in Northern Ireland on Tuesday night - Cheap Tuesdays and has my interest as it's a great premise! Will let you know xx
I'm reading the book as we speak and it's really engaging. I hope I end up liking the film too. 🥰
Might think twice. I had a favorite book I read like 6 times and got more out of it like I was there each time.
A movie was made years later. It was absolutely cringe. Mostly because the book was soooo descriptive with all the 5 senses. The movie was totally different from how I pictured it from the scenery being too light, the characters being too different, and it absolutely RUINED it for me. It completely left out what it was even the main plot, or what you're supposed to get about it all. To this day I am so pissed because I truly loved the book. Now I have a medical condition where reading books sadly isn't possible anymore. But movies still are.
I hope you'll reply and let me know what you decided and if you watched it, how you felt about it. And let me say, I LOVE both the Fanning sisters. They are so great. But not in this movie for some reason.
I'm a filmmaker AND I read the book. My overall feeling after leaving the theater was that all the heart and personality each character had in the book was completely removed. I didn't care about them at all and their arcs fell flat. I also felt the runtime was fine and that the real problem was that Shyamalan took out some key plot and character development moments and replaced it with unnecessary moments and weird details to make the film more... artsy I guess? The pay off for those choices didn't come by the end so I was left disappointed. This was one of my most anticipated watches of the year and truly think it could've been great if they had leaned more into A.M Shine's original writing. As a writer, I get particularly frustrated when directors don't trust the writer/source material and instead go too far in a different direction in an attempt to put their own stamp on something. Especially when that attempt results in bad pacing and worse dialogue.
I don't wanna be harsh. This was a good directorial debut but it could've been a GREAT one. Love the Shyamalans and am hoping her next one will be better.
You said the exact same thing as me regarding the run time.
The last act felt like it was just blown past.
Thanks for the review, Emma. I will give it a look when it comes out next week.
You have the best bumper music. Where do you find these songs?? You used one that sounded so much like Tame Impala, but I don’t actually think it was Kevin Parker.
It’s all from the TH-cam audio library
@@spookyastronauts Legend 🏆
@@spookyastronauts I have no idea what that means, but you have good taste lol
Looks like you had a blue outfit on too, love the videos
Not trying to be purposefully contrarian but… I’m quite indifferent to winding roads. I thought this film was alright, I’d agree that it felt like a novel adaptation, I felt like there was a lot of thematic set ups without entirely satisfying payoffs. But an okay watch overall!
Great review Emma!!! I think I'll wait for VOD to watch it..........
It sound definitely worth watching... in streaming!!!
Hi!!! Thank you so much for the awesome review I’m so excited to watch this movie I’ve always enjoyed scary fantasy movies thank you so much!!! 😊😊😊
I´m very curious about this one. Thanks for the review!
I THOUGHT ITS A GOOD STREAMING MOVIE..BUT I REALLY WANT TO SEE THE FUTURE OF THE DIRECTOR BECAUSE I LIKE ALOT OF THINGS IN IT.
You were spot on. I'm a fantasy freak, I looooved this! Goes into my 2024 top 10 💓
Amazingly perfect choice of soundtrack for your drive over
Emma seems like the perfect road trip buddy…the one who sits shotgun and keeps the tunes rolling
@@dukeon as far as Radiohead she couldn’t gone wrong … I’m such a fan I got excited just the fact she chose them as well
sounds like this one is something for me. Thanks Emma!
I just saw it last nite and agree with your assessment. I felt that what was so intriguing about the movie was the mystery of it all, and unfortunately once the mystery was dissolved I felt disconnected and no longer really cared. Maybe if the movie started off less as a horror film and was more about wonder and fantasy I would’ve went in with different expectations, but even so, the movie had just as many cons as pros. The visuals of the movie were often beautiful! But I never really felt for the characters or felt much myself other than suspense and some fear. The characters felt 2-dimensional, so I never connected with any of them and therefore never really cared about them. The movie seemed to care more about the plot than about giving us believable characters. And the plot took us to the 3rd act in which it was often cringy and laughably bad. I think that horror audiences have expectations of wanting to be scared and to have great reveals, but we were not given those elements, so I sat there feeling pretty disappointed for the last 3rd of the movie, which was a bummer because I was really excited about this movie. I also love fantasy movies like Harry Potter and LOTR, but when you’re set up for something scary and then get cheesy stuff like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it’s a big let-down.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but just finished the book. I felt similarly that I wasn’t scared in the way I am when I read Cutter or Tremblay, but I was VERY interested in what was going to happen next. I am very interested to see how they do the creatures. I didn’t particularly feel that the characters were awkward or under developed in the book, but they did get very annoying at times. The book switches perspectives and certain perspectives were quite frustrating for me to read.
I see Radiohead, i like.
Creep 😊
Always happy to connect with fellow Radiohead fans 🌸🍄🍄🍄
@@maevemaiden they're the best 🙌
I listened to the audiobook last year. Was so excited when I heard this movie was being made. I’m excited to see it. The book is so good!! If you like audiobooks this is a really good one to listen too.
Girlie you gots to watch "What you wish for", EVIL little movie, can't believe no one is talking about it.
Been waiting on this one. Hopefully I’ll like it ok. LOVE Fanning too.
What I’m really waiting on it’s Alien: Romulus. The trailers look insane! I’m a LONG time Alien fan… because I’m old. lol. But seriously, this looks like a return to old Alien type of movies.
I feel that everyone would be better served if the advertisers stopped associating the horror genre with the name shamalamadingdong. Whether the dad or the daughter. M Night has never made a horror movie. I’m not saying his movies are bad I’m saying there is no horror in his library. Similar to Jordan peele, they make feature length Twilight Zone episodes. Again some are good, most are average, none are horror.
I'm in Team Long Winding Roads. :)
Saw it over the weekend. I think Dakota Fanning is an amazing actress and really wanted to like this film. However, thought it was just OK. Still, even when I’m disappointed in a film, I always enjoy hearing you discuss it and this video did not disappoint. Thank you!
Damn.... :'D the only film that is horror and visually fantasy that popped into my head is pans labyrinth. I feel I can only be disappointed now that I have this association.
A scare rating of 4 is good, since I'm taking my boyfriend to see it and he is a HUGE CHICKEN when it comes to scary movies! I, on the otherhand, adore scary films!!
Please read the book! This should’ve been made into a tv show cause the movie was just so rushed and it’s kinda sad cause the book is so good and so scary and the cast was so good like Dakota fanning as Mina I obviously love and want but I don’t know if it was the writing but just all the characters in the movie felt nonchalant about everything and everyone in the book the way it describes how they feel and what they go through just has this huge impact and makes you care for the characters and just really put you on that perspective and makes you scared and the movie was just so rushed and a lot of stuff was changed which is always gonna happen in movie adaptation but idk this movie made me kinda mad but I still loved it so what I’m trynna say is pls read the book I promise it’s sooo good and if you do I think it’d be so cool if you did a movie to book comparison video or just I’d love a review on the book if you read it
I saw it today I’m shocked with how much I actually loved it a lot excited I saw it in theaters I want a sequel where we get a pov of the watchers and see what goes on in the burrows during the day and what they do at night and then do a pile of prequels she can do and make 20 movies easy
The book was very unpredictable! It had a lot of twists, maybe it helped that I was just imagining what I read.
Seein this next monday!!!
The book is *so* good. Easily one of my favorite folk/isolationist/creature-feature horror novels.
I was afraid this movie adaptation was going to lose everything that made the novel great--even more nervous since it was a directorial debut and from the daughter of M. Night (whose own movies are very hit or miss).
I'll wait to stream it.
Hi Emma ! I was disappointed in the book but I am still intrigued by the film & will give it a go. Stylistically it sounds exciting.
Do you plan to see In A Violent Nature? I saw it twice in theaters, it was amazing.
It’s not coming out in australia. They have refused to give out screeners so I can’t unfortunately
Damn that sucks, well you can always stream it on Shudder.
In Germany they changed the title to They See You. But in the dubbed version they actually call them The Watchers. 😅
I agree with the translation from book to screen. Definitely hard to visually bring those things to life.
Thanks as always. Loved seeing some Radiohead being played!
Completely agree, great review!
This was decent enough.
I would say this story feels like it would work more as a tv show. Could dig into the mystery more.
Has anybody seen From? There's some similarities here.
I saw it yesterday and we enjoyed it...the ending saved it for me and got me in the feels a little even. When we were leaving I realised the last film I went to see was Knock the Cabin 😂 I really don't get out much! Ticket price shocked me 😮
Think I'll pass cause Late Night With the Devil gets a one week re-release here. Worth another watch for sure.
I’m jonesing so hard for that one. If it’s still not streaming on any of my channels, I think I’m going to rent it. 😈
How much are tickets to go to the cinema in Australia now? When I lived there it was like $20 dollars.
Depends on the cinema tbh
Around $18 to $30 depending where you go which is a lot of money if you’re not rich enough to just move overseas on a whim.
I have tickets to see this tomorrow, I will come back and watch this after 😂 appreciate the review Emma!
Are the “creatures” scary? I want to watch but I’m afraid of the creatures. 🥲
@@sehryaseen8869hey! I didn’t find them scary, but that is subjective. I think you’ll be okay though because there’s nothing too visceral
I couldn’t stand the book, so I don’t have much faith for the film☹️
Does the one eyed scroll technique actually work?
Excellent movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it. If you like folk horror it's great. Excellent performances .
I don't think the movie was meant to generate "scares" and it is more of the mystery/thriller type. Unfortunately, different "Acts" of the film did not come together well. The setting was a bit ridiculous (stranded in a forest and no need to search for food over months), and just when the movie seemed to be over, another part was appended with lengthy backstory and explanation, and the ending was incomplete and apparently open to a sequel. Certain parts were never further developed (e.g. Dakota having an identical twin sister in a doppelgangers movie, but it turned out to have no significance). Still worth watching because Dakota fanning was in it.
HAND ME MY BIRD..... this line was disjointed and made me burst out laughing. I loved the style and the camera work but some of the dialogue just made me laugh. Maybe fantasty just isnt my thing, definitely worth a watch on streaming though of youre on the fence.
You are, without a doubt, the best film critic of the "post- internet"(?) generation, hands down.
Thank you so much. I think I’m almost pre internet not sure haha. Maybe dial up internet haha But this is so sweet.
@@spookyastronauts that explains it 😉👌
The book is worth the read, I personally listened to its audio book, it really moves along and isn't boring
a great film to watch at home 😂
In my cinema it's called "They See You" 😂 (Germany)
Omg! Haha
Deutscher Literalismus 😂
I liked the movie. one thing I was wondering, the irish accent seemed pretty light. I was expecting a little more, it sounded like it could have been set in the US.
Good review and cool video Emma!👉🙂👈
You know it's not going to be good when the movie's release date is tomorrow and there's still not a single review on it from RT and Metacritic.
I’m a RT critic, sometimes it just takes a while to load reviews, and it’s more got to do with distribution, they didn’t have many premieres world wide just a few.
@@spookyastronauts Really?! I didn't know it's got to do with distribution. 'Cause it seems to be a pattern with every bad horror movie or perhaps it's just a coincidence
Just about to watch this video. I’m not expecting it to be that great but I’m STILL excited to see it. I’m always excited to watch a Shamalan (horror/thriller) movie, albeit from a family member. Lol
I actually like that interlude.
I just saw this and really liked it, an 8 out of 10 for me. But, I LOVE lore and every detail and reveal had me almost in shivers with where the plot may be going. Those that prefer monsters with minimal explanation or backstory will be highly disappointed.
This was very weird. I was looking forward to a new Dakota Fanning movie, but not great. Her performance not bad though.
I thought it was predictable as well, and I thought it was okay until the end. I wish they would have left it a little more ambiguous. Like, have the reveal but don't show it and just leave it at that (hard to say more without spoilers)
Seeing it tomorrow as uk gets it I'm not a fantasy type of person so not so what I'm gonna think hopefully okay?
Good review. I'm not a huge m night fan, but I may give this one a try in the theater since his daughter seems to have her own thing going on
It’s not really like his work as it’s not an original script it’s an adaption. And she’s got a completely different style
Emma it gave me Bramble vibes! I know you played the game recently 😊
Omg I love brambleee! Less babies in this one !
Great review! I liked the film as well. Don't forget to submit to Rotten Tomatoes as the film is currently getting killed there :(
