This movie is my childhood, and it's amazing to think that this was the first fully cgi animated film. I like how they knew the technology was limited, so they worked around the issue of everything having a "plasticy" look by making the main characters plastic toys. And of course, the story and characters are amazing. Pixar really came swinging right out of the gate.
I definitely did that when I was younger. I remember going “Im watching you (name of stuffed animal)!” with my stuffed animals and dolls growing up good lord
What's weird is that in the original storyboard/Deleted Scenes of Toy Story, Woody was extremely unlikable however that wasn't John Lasseter and his team's idea to make Woody that mean, It was actually Jeffrey Katzenberg who thought of the idea of making Toy Story more edgier compared to being more family friendly, which is no surprise since he would later work at DreamWorks to make Shrek.
Yeah, they made Woody meaner and Buzz extremely clueless and naive, I’m so glad they decided to tone down their personalities and made them more well-rounded. Like, Woody is still kind of a jerk, but that’s stemming from his insecurity, and for the most part he’s a good guy. And while Buzz is naive at some points, he’s not a doormat either, he’s capable of putting two and two together and standing up for himself.
I saw the documentary "The Pixar Story" from 2007 and thats where I first saw the story of their "Black Friday" reel and as a fan, its almost unwatchable to see characters that you love that way, it's crazy how much Lasseter and his team early on were pushed to make the movie "edgier". While that humor worked perfectly for Shrek, it didnt fit in with the story Lasseter wanted to tell. Granted that's the studio systems and them always giving notes, sometimes its helpful but sometimes it isnt. What's more crazy is that the studio gave them I think only 2 or 3 weeks to essentially start from scratch and make a new pitch for the film and they did! It was a battle up until the film released with their big Pixar image computers running practically 24/7 to get the film done and if any one of those shut down, it would've been a catastrophe. This film has to me become one of those immortal classics, not just because it was the first full length CG animated film, but it's because of how truly good the film is and the first 3 Toy Story films are I think one of the best film trilogies, period.
Fun fact: Toy Story was added to the National Film Registry in 2005, making it one of a small group of films to be selected within the first year of eligibility. Those other films being: Raging Bull, Do the Right Thing, Goodfellas, Fargo, 13 Lakes, Freedom Riders, 12 Years a Slave and 20 Feet from Stardom.
11:00 Fun fact: the Buzz Lightyear commercial is narrated by Penn Jillette, of Penn & Teller fame. And funnily enough, Penn & Teller would later do a show called _Bovine Faeces!_ where they'd debunk popular myths in society (e.g. religion, politics, marketing, everyday mumbo-jumbo), so him debunking Buzz's entire worldview is retroactively perfect casting.
4:55 Not to mention, some of Buzz's actions in the movie are either flat-out impossible or too expensive to manufacture for a cheap children's toy, such as the helmet that goes in all the way, and the karate-chop action we see later.
Toy Story is one of those rare, perfect movies. No flaws, nothing that aged (too) poorly, good for all ages, fun, has a good message. It's just perfect.
The army men were always my favorite because when I was ten, I was walking down a grassy field and I just randomly found like 30 something of em in a ditch and took then home
Time to blow you guys’ minds; 9 years before this movie came out, a Jim Henson TV movie called “the Christmas toy” came out. It also involved toys coming to life, the favorite toy feeling threatened of being replaced, also by a new, space-themed toy who did not know they were a toy. As an added drama, if toys were seen by people out of place from where they were last left, they basically died. It’s way to much similarity to not have been toy story’s inspiration. I suggest checking it out cause it actually is a good movie. just checked and the full movie is free to watch on YT
5:14 Fun fact: the font used here is Gill Sans, which is a surprisingly old font for how modern it looks, having been created in 1926 and released publicly in 1928.
0:58 Strangely enough, when I played with my toys as a kid, the games I did were more akin to how the toys themselves act when there aren't humans around - you know, just chatting it up and getting into random mischief. I guess, even as a kid, I always gravitated more towards the slice-of-life stuff.
9:30 honestly he kind of reminds me of these people from a comic I read.. where they run a circus and kidnap people occasionally from the audience and then do surgery on them to change their appearance and make them look strange for future shows.. I feel like that could be Sid someday😅
1:40 Back in the 2000s, my family had two big-a$h CRTs that were, like, a little over a cubic metre a piece, and I just assumed that was the default size for a TV for all my childhood.

A classic movie that upstarted Pixar stream of many Classic films. Toy Story also changed the animation industry forever with how animated films are made really. Now all animated films are made with CGI, instead of hand drawn animating. Studios figure out early that CGI animation films were for outperforming the hand drawn ones. Despite the CGI being more expensive to produce, the profits were huge for it be totally worth it.
Since I haven't seen a comment, mention it yet: that's Tom Hanks voicing Woody, not Jim Varney, although Jim Varney does voice Slinky in the first 2 movies
Credits where credits is due, for being both the first full length 3d movie and their first movie, they did an a+ stellar job. We can basically thank pixar for being those who popularized skeletal animations, which was later implemented into games and stuff.
Eagle scout here. Yes, using a magnifying glass to start fires does work. Very effectively in some circumstances.. That's why sometimes with magnifying glasses or telescope toys it says don't put near an open window
This movie was my shit as a kid! I still get emotional when I watch it today! Also, massive respect to Boom for having that Venom statue in the background.
I believe one of the reasons why this movie holds up visually is because most of it is centered around toys. And being toys, they don't need to look hyper-realistic to be believable. And if something doesn't look quite right on a character, you can just chalk it up to said character being a toy, rather than the issue being the animation's technology.
Crazy it’s been 28 years and still making Toy Story 5. Which still loves this movie how it first came out. Especially Buzz Lightyear and his relative features.
You see... Mr. Phillips is asleep, snoring, on a reclining chair when Buzz enters the TV room. It is possible that Sid and Hannah's father is an alcoholic, who enjoys drinking and appears to be a hunter enthusiast due to the animal heads mounted on the wall... And when you ignore you kids that way.. things like this happen. Kinda sad actually.
In Toy Story 3, we see Sid as an adult. He's a garbage man. And he's LOVING it. Added with the fact that we see NO toys at the dump?? Fuck Toy Story 2. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED, to make Sid go from learning a truth that would BREAK most people (especially in his position, and childhood.) I painted miniatures during summer. I bought one of those magnifier-light thingies for it. Bought a new set, left it and went out for a while. Came back, package had a huge hole burned into it. The story I remember is John Lasseter was a Disney animator that advocated 3D animation (like they used in Beauty and the Beast) but for an entire film but Disney execs thought that could never work and kept shooting him down. He left Disney with a few others, got funding from Steve Jobs, and bought the Pixar computer from Lucas and named their company after it. They did shorts and commercials at first. Toy Story was their first movie. They got Buena Vista (Disney’s distribution company) to distribute it. The fact that this Pixar's first fully CGI film is crazy. The animation is good at times(the dog is a nightmare fuel tho-) but this is still a very good movie
I just realized, how did Andy not realize the toys were alive considering how Buzz’s face isn’t a smile when he freezes in this movie? Like in 2, 3, and 4 Buzz’s face is a smile, but in this it’s not, idk what to call the expression he’s doing, but I know what a smile is, and that’s not it.
Honestly you would think it does clear my favorite Pixar movie but if you haven't watched The Incredibles as an adult and really thought about the themes plot points and the attention to detail you would never guess that it clears every Pixar movie and arguably every Disney movie IMO and this coming from someone whos favorite show growing up was toy story .
I know even now fur can be a struggle but Pixar pulled it off well during Monster's Inc with Sulley alone. The humans also seem rough in this movie too.

Never really thought about it before, but if Buzz was a real ranger as he thought, with a real laser, he would have at least tased a random, friendly, inhabitant of a new planet. Not very paragon.
Ah yes, Toy Story, the movie that started the long legacy of Pixar. And as a franchise is pretty consistent, I love all 3 of the sequels, yes that does include 4, it wasn't that bad, I have my reasons. Toy Story 1 is the funniest, Toy Story 2 is all around the best one, Toy Story 3 has the best ending, and Toy Story 4 has the best character writing for Woody fight me! Though, I'm not excited for Toy Story 5, if 4 was pushing it then this is going off rails

You guys gotta watch A Bug’s Life next. It’s super underrated in terms of Pixar films.
That thumbnail. XD
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen voice woody and buzz.
What's crazy is that I first watched this movie before I could even walk, and there are still things about it that I didn't notice before.🤯
Toy Story has always and forever will be my favourite movie franchise
Never really thought about it before, but if Buzz was a real ranger as he thought, with a real laser, he would have at least tased a random, friendly, inhabitant of a new planet. Not very paragon.
1990s CGI is so primitive the humans look more plastic than the toys.
Thumbnail is devious
I love that this can be a Christmas movie 😇
Nah that poor lad isn’t gonna need therapy he gonna need the people with the white coats to come him away after that😅😂
Awesome reaction of my favorite Toy Story!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
Same
Ughh that thumbnail bout make me act up!
(Tis a joke)
That title is hilarious! 😆
