20:57 my 100% favorite fact about gay penguins is not just that they take in eggs, it’s that the percentage of penguins that naturally pair up with same-sex partners (completely independent of/before any eggs are involved) is almost identical to the average number of eggs that are abandoned or have the parents die annually.

As someone who literally wrote their master’s thesis on gay cowboys I can tell you it was one of those open secrets. The old west was mostly devoid of women so there was a lot of “mutual solace” as the history books label it. It was also common for there to be all male dances in the west where the “female” dancing partner would be designated by a white scarf tied around their arm. So it wasn’t necessarily accepting, but there was a a lot of “gay stuff” happening in the west. 🤠🏳️‍🌈

I think it was also easier for some trans people to live as their true gender because clothes were bulkier and just no one would have questioned a person as much, right?
In addition, people frequently moved out west to change their identities for other reasons, so gender would have been just as easy to change. I mean, obviously the hormones and the surgeries weren't available, but social transitioning would have been easier for most people, I think.

The funny thing is that in a lot of places and times with huge toxic masculinity problems, a certain type of male homosexuality was absolutely treated as an open secret or only shameful for the bottom. It’s like homophobic toxic masculinity loops right back around into a sort of "Why would a buncha lads need girls around" and "oh, he's a man's man" homoeroticism. You don’t see quite the same thing with lesbians, because toxic feminity isn't really A Thing in that way, although the femme4femme stereotype of a "girls' girl" does exist and often flies under homophobes' radar as "admirable female friendship".

2:00 (Regarding gay cowboys, TLDR they did exist, and John Wayne types are just fiction.)
Kaz Rowe has a wonderful video about this. The truth is, being a cowboy was not glamorous, but it was also out of the eye of white cishet society. Both meant that the Wild West was filled with countless queer people, people of color, etc. Multiple trans people are documented, and were beloved in their communities!!
All that history was erased by Hollywood. 50s American nostalgia (and post-war politics) rewrote a historically diverse subculture into nothing but white, hypermasculine nationalists. The real people of the Wild West, for the most part, looked nothing like John Wayne.
Hope this provided some helpful details. In short, the Wild West was one of the safer places for queer people in US history. ❤

people in the old west didn't really accept trans or gay people, people just didn't notice due to LGBT people hiding the fact they are LGBT, and because of individualism there was more privacy and autonomy for ones owns actions thus they could do what they want and hide as said before. also there was both a sense of communalism and individualism during the wild west, there was just a lot of individualism with examples of communalism being mutual aid societies. and you can even get political by saying that with more social security people have relied more off the government than off each other in a community.

When my dog had a red collar he would always get called a she, and people would be surprised that I picked a red collar for a male dog (I picked red because I was waiting for his orange collar to arrive, it had more to do with his namesake than his tackle)

You actually had to call them, which had the added effect of helping them learn to come when their name was called! It's a lot harder to mix them up now, since he's a big ol' tank, and she's a dainty little thing, but at the time it was kinda funny that you actually had to see who came when you called to tell who was who.

I mean, he wandered the lands with his 12 buddies, washing their feet, offering them his body at nice parties. That does sound kinda gay to me.
Now, some might argue that there was Maria Magdalena, but she could have been a friend, a cover wife, or just a symbol for his slight bi tendency (still 12:1 though).
And yeah, you COULD argue that the whole "I'm a virgin, it was actually god that made me pregnant" thing was an excuse for naïve Joseph, but that just would make Jesus cis and not less gay.

My awakening - Princess Jasmine. Specifically, when she's in the red slave outfit and is pretending the Jafar love spell worked on her. She stands up and puts a crown on her head, and a little piece of see-through fabric falls down the curves of her body 🥵 8 or 9 year old Vicki had no idea why she liked that so much but early twenties Vicki eventually figured it out 😅

Concerning learning about 'cowboys' from the movies.
A lot of cowboys weren't white - virtually never seen in movies. Across the USA, estimates are that 25% of the cowboys were Afro-American and another 15% Hispanic/Native.
Particularly during cattle drives, cowboys lived in a mainly male environment. On an official level, cowboy culture was homophobic (like the rest of society) but it was much less uniform than settled culture. Like other homosocial subcultures (prison, hobo, or navy) gay relationships happened - not always consensually.
    And to add,
When I lived in Germany I traveled on the Cisalpine train. Guess they'll have to rename it the Normalalpine train. (The Cisalpine train goes around rather than through the alps.)
    And, your last question.
Gay awakening with Fred Jones in Scooby Doo - original version. (Fun facts from the original series: Shaggy was a varsity athlete in acrobatics while Fred was in the Drama Club. It was later on that the characters got flattened into narrow stereotypes.)

i think if someone said "trans women and normal women", i could think that it excludes cis neurodivergent women, cis queer women etc. Just specifically trans women and women who find themselves to be quite average in most aspects. I can't think of a context where it makes sense to say that, but it's theoretically possible, so i would have to consider it.

15:10 Bible verse cited to "support" the idea that Satan made gays and transsexuals.
Genesis Book 5, Verse 2 states: "Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created."
Not only is there no reference ANYWHERE to Satan or gay people or transsexual people, but it's written really oddly here. Because it's talking about the creation of Adam. Nothing about Eve. But "male and female, created he them?" SEEMS to be saying that God created male and female, but also could be read that there are male and female deities who worked together to make Adam.
Additionally, Adam seems to be nonbinary because "called THEIR name Adam... when THEY were created."
So like... good Bibling, random church!

19:15 I once encountered a biphobic trans woman and it really made me sad. My friend and I went to an LGBTQ+ bar and really clicked with this girl. We were all taking a break from dancing and having a chat when the subject of sexuality and gender identity came up. This woman, let’s call her “V,” said she was MTF and a lesbian. Love it. Then my friend answered, saying she was a lesbian, too, but cisgender. V then turned to me, so I told her I was bisexual and cisgender.
Spuds, this woman actually scoffed. She crossed her arms and leaned back in her seat, and in the most condescending tone possible said: “ Have you even been with a woman?” My brain short-circuited for a minute, because I could not come up with a response to such a biphobic question coming from somebody whom I thought could relate to how it feels to have your identity questioned.
My friend was quick to “assure” V that I had in fact been with both men and women, and that I was actually engaged to a woman (now my wife.) I couldn’t meet V’s eyes for the rest of the night, although I tried my best not to let it show how much her response bothered me.
