- How to replace the boot train tube and grommet on a Mk7 Golf.
The grommet that drains water from the boot mounted VW badge / handle on the Mk7 Golf is a common failure item. When the grommet fails it leaves the drain tube loose in the boot, draining the water between the two metal panels making up the boot lid. Let's fix this common water leak!
When opening the boot you can find this drains out of the plastic trim and rear light holes.
This £5 part is a fairly cheap and easy thing to replace yourself.

Thanks for this. £6 for the part and 20 mins to replace. Definitely would recommend taking all of the panels off as it's pretty easy.

Thank you for the video. I replaced my drain tube using your instructions and it was a success! It was pretty tricky putting the trim back on but taking off the sides and back one made it a hell of a lot easier. Cheers!
Forgot to mention: I added a zip tie at the end it insure the tube didn't pop out as it was a fairly loose fitting.

Thanks for the clear, concise instructions! My local VW dealer didn't have the part in stock so as a temporary fix I trimmed off the remains of the rubber grommet, squeezed the end of the drain hose into a short length of silicone hose, and fed that thru the boot hole. It poured overnight and it seemed to work fine for now at least, haha

In all honesty taking all that off it is extra time wasted. One man job, I unscrewed bolts and popped all clips down (never taking rear plastic off) and just stuck my hands in there and felt the tube and took it off. Custom made a new tube and end and installed. Tested, then popped all clips back evenly, screwed for bolts back and put plastics back. Thank you for the first part :) Made it a lot easier.

Thanks very much for this clear video Neil! - the water had leaked into the left hand light cluster and corroded the contacts which took some cleaning to get working again. With the new drain hose in place it will prevent it happening again.
No worries Andrew. Sounds like a lucky escape! A simple flaw that can cause many issues!
I’ve just renewed my water drain pipe on my 2015 Golf GTD, the new modified drain pipe is much better than the clear hard plastic pipe with the terrible grommet design that just rots away that VW fitted to the handle that allows the water to fill up the tailgate and I’d guess in time the rear wiring in the tailgate like lights and wiper etc will start to corrode giving electrical problems later. This should have been a recall item by Vw to rectify this unnecessary water leak that all owners have to sort themselves
100%, at least it's an easy inexpensive fix.
@@NeilMagill it is. I did mine in about 15 mins. I’m guessing the VW polo, seat models and Audi models will have the same design if the handle release is the same as the VW golf Mk7
@Rayfaedundee...My research about Mk7 water leaks revealed many areas where leaks occur this is one of many that needs attention. The others are side rear vents behind the rear wheels leak water into bottom of spare tire well both sides, to access...bumper cover has to be removed and tail lights remove vent clean area and silicone bead around frame replace cleaned vent frame assembly, Doors lower speaker leak onto floor of passenger compartment remove door pannels and drill out rivets holding speaker clean old dry rot seal and replace with silicone sealant or similar Butyl rubber tape works great , new rivets or screws for remounting speaker(s) replace door panels, other areas are sunroof drains and top of back hatch seal rubber grommets in middle of hatch
@@harryberry474 yes I know all about these other water leak areas on Mk7 Golf’s, the Mk8 probably has the exact same faults. But once you have all those water leakage areas sealed up then the Golf is a great car to own

Brilliant video.
However one thing to mention:
The side trims should be removed first as the main piece has slots which go into those, you risk snapping the plastic tabs if you don’t remove the side pieces first 👍
Which pieces do you mean?
do you take top off first?
@@RainbowCharade take the top piece near the brake light off first, then the two side pieces, then take the big main piece off.
Also, the clips have a habit of getting stuck so you might hear a couple of new clips when the old ones get mangled up
is it best to take top off first, then sides, the the bottom trim?

You are very welcome. In this case no, it was more a problem any time you opened the boot it would all fall out.
Try a good glass cleaner for the inside of your windows too... it all helps.

Nice video, I just was asking myself, what does the tube do? It seems to be connected to some kind of... motor? How does the tube prevent the water from pooring out of the bootlid? I totally do not understand....... Sorry!
Thanks for the comment. It drains the water out from the VW badge down to the lower part of the boot, down the rear bumper.
@@NeilMagill Aha! Sooo, the water goes into the badge, and the tube drains the water from the badge (kinda like behind the fuel cap) so that it can't poor into the boot lid, and from there on into the boot...? That makes sense... Thanks!

It depends where it's broken off... but not really.
Hi. In my golf MK7, it seemingly there is no drainage pipe at all. And also, I think there is no drainage point on the back of the VW badge. Where can I buy the back of VW Badge with the water outlet?
Perhaps it's like the Mk5 and has it based on the spec of your car.
I'd suggest VW or eBay to buy one.
Would the same part be ok for a 2009 Mk6 Golf? It looks identical...

It's the same trim :).
I HAVE CHECKED A GOLF TODAY AND DIDNT HAVE ONE AT ALL. BOUGHT FROM NEW AND NEVER BEEN OPENED OR REMOVED BY ANYONE
Mine on the other hand a golf 7.5 alltrack 2018 has got rust and the end of the hose is flash inside . Little bubbles there. Im mad about it. It will need fixing in tge future

Hi Neil, what are the chances that this Pipe can come loose (i.e. disconnect from the inside) through normal opening and closing of the boot? I ask because my VW was sent in for inspection due to water build up in the tailgate (which has caused damage to electrical connectors) and this pipe was disconnected. I'm told as it's water damage it's not covered under warranty but my view is those electrics wouldn't have been damaged if the pipe was connected in the first place. Would really appreciate a response mate - I'm looking at a bill of £2k atm to sort this out. Cheers buddy.
I agree and would fight that. There is a known issue with water getting into the tailgate and leave it there.
@@NeilMagill Thanks Neil appreciate the reply. I had a reversing camera fitted from the main dealer and the Technician who inspected the car said most likely the engineer who fitted the camera forgot to reconnect this pipe after installing the camera. But the Main Dealer is not claiming responsibility (surprise surprise). So you think I should just make the claim through the warranty and follow through with that process?
@@chaz159 100%, I'd say it's the fault of the dealer that fitted the reverse camera.
