    Just replaced the pipe on mine after watching this very informative video. I had no idea what might be causing the issue and was on the verge of calling the garage and no doubt handling over a good wedge of money afterwards. I looked at several videos on TH-cam before attempting the job and this was by far the most detailed and explained everything perfectly. This is a job you can complete yourself with a little patience and time.
    Thanks so much for posting this and I no longer need to worry about my boot lid filling with water very time it rains.

    Great video! Yes, you are right to highlight this silly design flaw!!! I also found a rapid fix when you find your boot full of water.....Take a plastic drinking straw and carefully poke it up inside the pipe that was loose. I did this. It was a tight push fit. Then cut the straw so it hangs 1cm below the hole and the water drains out onto rear bumper and you boot stays dry!! To make it look pretty I put a rubber grommet where the straw exits the little hole.

    Thanks for the video, very clear. I think my car lacked the grommet when I bought it (second hand) and didn’t realise the significance. I replaced the drain pipe quickly using your instructions. Turns out the water in the spare tyre well was coming from elsewhere - I’ve watched some other videos and taken a bit more time to seal around the hidden vents and rear lights (involved removing the bumper which for me was a major operation). Hope that’s done the trick.

I've managed to put a drinking straw in the end as a temporary measure until I can get to the dealers. Quality video. Thanks very much. I noticed after being away for three weeks while it's been raining heavily, that when the boot lid raises, all the water that must have accumulated within the boot starts running around. Lifted up the floor of the boot and there must have been a litre of water in there. So it can become a big problem if not corrected! Thankfully it was obviously fairly fresh water. I'm 99% certain that this will be the problem.

    I’ve just tried to change the pipe following your video but it looks like the 2013 mk 7 had no drain pipe. The grommet is there on the boot lid edge but that’s it. Plus there is no drainage hole on the boot catch to attach a new pipe. I’m guessing it’s because its an early mk 7. Has anybody else found this?

      @@sanjayhari693 I’ve had the same problem with my 2014 mk7 golf. I found a large amount of water in the boot a while back and cleaned it all up. Haven’t had any water build up since. However I did initially have issues with the engine management light and EPC light coming on intermittently. This has now disappeared. I still have the problem with the start/stop error appearing. So now I just automatically turn it off each time I drive. Did you find a solution to yours?

    • @sanjayhari693
      @sanjayhari693 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@swayz09 I seen a combo of issues and sorted them step by step. My golf was standing for 4months after the problems started. Water leak was due to bad waterproof design and resolved by resealing the rear bumper vent, door speakers & replacing the boot badge drain. The EPC and Eng light ended up being a turbo failure. Replaced that and the car drives perfectly. The stop start failure was a combo of the bad turbo and a faulty battery. We isolated it to the battery now but I haven't replaced my battery yet so drive with the Stop start switched off. All very annoying and related to bad VW design and build!!

    Hi Marty - Great Video! What are the chances that this Pipe can come loose (i.e. disconnect from the inside) through normal opening and closing of the boot? I ask because my VW was sent in for inspection due to water build up in the tailgate (which has caused damage to electrical connectors) and this pipe was disconnected. I'm told as it's water damage it's not covered under warranty but my view is those electrics wouldn't have been damaged if the pipe was connected in the first place. Would really appreciate a response mate - I'm looking at a bill of £2k atm to sort this out. Cheers matey.

    What year car is this? I’ve got a 2013 Mk7 gti with a boot full of water. I just took it apart like you did in your video and this pipe doesn’t exist on my model. There’s no drain coming off the inside part of the handle at all.

    • @Martysworkshop
      @Martysworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is on a 2016 so might be why its a little different! I hear there is a common fault where water gets in through seals that are on vents behind the bumper on these cars, hope this helps

    • @Martysworkshop
      @Martysworkshop  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the pope stops water from getting inside the boot, which can corrode all the electrics, but what also tends to happen is water tends to collect in the boot, some can leak out but it will collect unfortunately

    • @valleykingvids2059
      @valleykingvids2059 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When the gromit corrodes, the pipe pushes itself back inside the boot lid, allowing water to overflow in the inside sil.

      @@valleykingvids2059 Yeah. You’d still expect the water to come out the hole as it’s the middle/lowest point in tail gate. Anyway it doesn’t! Plus water is also pissing through the rear door speakers now🤣

      I have the same problem, 2013 Mk7 Tdi with a boot full of water and soaking wet seats. Stripped out the boot, checked tail light seals and vents, and the leak is definitely coming via the boot handle. Thought I'd found the fix here but when I took off the boot trim, there is no small white pipe on the inside of the handle to fix any tube to and no sign that it is missing/broken off. Also the hole in the bodywork where the gromit should be is just plugged with a rubber stopper. I've at least identified the leak is definitely via the handle now - but at a loss as to how to stop it!

    • @chrisvm6231

      @@brucecarter3433 i have fixed the problem my removing the rear bumper and sealed the 2 vents on the left and right side. These are very loose and water comes in from there. Havent had a wet trunk since. Also made a few holes in the rubber that is behind the vents, so any water that does seep in has a way out.
