Doug is one of those guys that you never think of when talking guitarist, but this dude is on so many albums and performed so many concerts with so many big names. Whitesnake, Dio, some names that were giants in metal/rock
Like Joe Perry in some ways. Criminally underrated.

This is just like sitting across from your friend playing guitars and having your friend show you how he plays songs, including how he used to play them. Check out how hard he rakes the strings playing the ending of the 2nd solo. This whole video is just great, no posturing or ego, just playing.
Gotta love someone so talented who can say, "that was too advanced for me." Humility, respect, class.....
Doug playing "All Right Now" shows just how good Kossoff was in a time of little or no effects.
In regard to Kossoff,..It is yet another example that shows how influential his playing was. Particularly that song.
@@stricknine8623 it's such a stupid easy song and it is so freaking hard to play really cleanly. Doug is really struggling to do it. And Doug can do ANYTHING!
@@vanwagke1 he doesn't play it how kossoff did. close but not how Paul does it. Watch it live and you'll see. plus, hardly any gain at all and a dry amp. It's all in Kossoff's fingers , especially the solo. Very hard to get that right. Plus he butchered the solo in the high part. adding shred is NOT good at all. Takes away from the whole simplicity and beauty of Kossoff's playing and solo writing.

She was totally star struck and broke down in tears.

Doug is a GREAT player and seems like such a really cool/nice guy. When I was a kid in Junior High School back in the early '70s, if you played guitar and could play "All Right Now" and "Funk #49" by the James Gang, you were THE MAN!
Fun to watch someone that turns into a kid when he gets his guitar in his hands. I can remember having that kind of passion for the instrument. Master of his craft...
He is another one of those guys that needs to have a youtube channel. Teaching us some of that enormous talent he has for music.
I could watch him for 15 mintues each week showing off some of those riffs he has played over the years.
Holy shit. A $100 lesson there on riffs, voicings, vibrato, tone. Plus he’s got a great ear. He nailed so many of the nuances that make those riffs great.
Doug is such a great player and a wonderful teacher and commentator in this video. Love him!
I love Free and Kossofs playing sure inspired me big time. The solo is simple, but pure perfection at it's finest. Thanks Doug for your awesome playing and teaching here, your a superb player and great teacher too.
Ive been playing for 42 years. It is one of those solos that is simple on paper and in ideas but it is easy for seasoned players to screw up this simple solo.
It happens a lot actually. Great vibrato that is accurate to pitch can be challenging. While being accurate to pitch and also capturing the swagger, timing and other nuances just add to the challenge.
I agree, and the recording actually has a two guitar riff going,listen closely and you'll hear twin guitars on the main riff. Great tune.

Oh absolutely,...He recorded the rhythm and then layerd a second track over the first track with things played with slightly different voicings of the same chords.
Simple? Perhaps but playing it correctly with the same feel and expression in the playing as kossoff created isn't

Agreed on all points. Doug is a great guitar player who is so underrated! He seems like a super-nice guy and so knowledgeable musically. My favorite pickup as well. Hot but not too hot. Articulate and sounds incredible.

this video was awesome!!! Not only is that a great classic track but you could see and hear the excitement in Doug's voice. It was like watchin him learn it all over again. He truly loves the guitar and it shows. Not only that but because of how much you can tell he loves it it's infectuous!!!
I had the privilege of jamming with Doug in 2019 NAMM show at the Ronnie Montrose tribute concert I was very nervous before the show and Doug sat down with me and jamed with me back stage and made sure I was warmed up and ready to go coolist guy ever ,,,,,we ROCKED THAT NIGHT
One of the most underrated guitarists
23 years ago, I worked on a project in Doug's home backyard studio. Doug is not only a very talented guitarist, but a genuinely nice guy.
His mistakes sound better than my best playing!
😱 DA is a BEAST!!! Nicest guy too! ZERO ego! 1st heard him on that Van Halen tribute album 1000 year ago. Did "I'm the one". Was the best thing on the album. He played the solos his own way and I couldn't believe it! Never thought anyone could play that song back then. Been searching ever since for vid of him playing it live.
This vid shows that u never stop learning. "Alright Now" is fairly simple. Never tried it, but knew how to play the majority of the song. Can hear the chords and picture in my head what they are. The one thing tho... That G, with the open G-string is CRUCIAL in making the song sound "right". I didn't know that's how it's played. Cannot wait to get home to try!!!
First of all, there are two guitars involved. So when you play it alone you have to make a combination/compromise of both parts which is what I ended up doing when I played it with a coverband.
Yeah two in the album version and actually three layers in the single version (although the single version misses the first sweet solo the rhythm guitar to me is even cooler sounding still because of how Koss layered the guitars). Koss is my all time favorite guitar player 🙏
"Allright!!" Your vibrato has done nothing but improved over the years Doug, amazing sustain & brutal whole step+ bends.
Remember taking lessons from you at Instrumental in T.O. back in the day. I'll never forget my 1st lesson with you, you had been on a Zepplin listening binge & 're'discovered the amazing songwriting range of Page thru the Physical Graffiti track 'Down by the Seaside'. We ended up talking rock more than learning that evening, had a blast!

I have been a big fan of Doug for about 15 years now; one of my favorites. I am happy for him, working with Dio, Coverdale, Hughes, I mean, it does not get any better when it comes to vocals...also Aldridge, Tichy, Wright on drums...Sarzo, Mendoza, and Hughes (again) on bass....great guy, great (bad) company :)
Paul Kossoff! My all time favorite guitar player ever. You nailed it, he sounded like a violin his control and touch were in a league of his own. And he just meant it like his life depended on it. The simplicity is very very deceiving, it’s some of the hardest stuff to play just because hardly anyone can play as finely as Koss could(you can learn to play the songs badly, but playing them well could take you a lifetime). A violinist would appreciate Koss because of that. And his inversion chord work with his unique use of open strings(listen to Be My Friend or from his solo album Molten Gold)it was absolutely genius. His playing was so so special… He should be more famous, he was one of the best ever to grace music.
Dougie is totally awesome! So cool! So friendly! And a top guitar man!

Awesome - lots of great riffs! There were so many great albums and players in the late 60s and early 79s it’s hard to believe - free, nazareth, Sabbath, scorpions, deep purple, pat travers,, Hendrix, Johnny winter, Rory Gallagher, Tommy bolin, UFO, BOC, Allman brothers, grand funk, mountain, Captain.Beyond, the list goes on. Not sure how people could keep up with all of it back then.
Doug is a Real Guitar god!!! 😎🤟I' ve seen him live with DIO in Germany during Killing the dragon Tour in 2004. and in Balingen during the Bang your Head Open Air with Whitesnake. It was great. He's a genius and an absolutly perfekt performer with his Les Paul🎸 . 👋👋👍👍Great!!!!
Doug is one of my favorite players. His lead work is oozing with feel and very bluesy which I love. He's been a strong influence in my guitar playing, a great teacher. Thanks for the video Doug and Premier Guitar!!

I'm 61, and I remember that song from Free every summer.. I was in my teens.. Maybe 12 or 13, or something when I remember hearing it the first time in the early 70's. I'm not sure when it actually came out, but I thought it was the late 60's.. Anyway, great riff..
Love hearing Doug play.. He's got the same style as I do, or I have the same as him you might say I guess.. Great guitar player and he has great choices in guitars.. I've always wanted to find one of the Jackson's he played back in the early 90's. He had a deal with Jackson and he used a reverse headstock guitar that was cool as hell.. Anyway, great video. Criminally underrated guitarist. Tones and feel can shred just an all around great guitar player and seems like a rad dude.
Another great example of an extremely cool A-chord riff is Riff Raff from AC/DC.
Watch the live version of Paul Kossoff with Free playing All Right Now. He uses his pinky to fret Low A on the E string during the iconic riff. You create the sus style chord but playing Low on E string, Gb on D string and D on the B string. Then simply the transition by adding the A on the G string and resolve with simple A chord.

@@DMSProduktionsnope he didn’t .he played the main riff the same every time .the little finger always on the A on the E string to give it the bigger sound with them being a three piece .the the little finger on the top E and B string was only used when he recorded it on the album .he played the lead slightly different sometimes around the A chord but that’s it .the main chorus was never played like how Doug played it with the open A string ringing .the A is played at the 12th fret on the A&D strings together the high A sound .

I've been following the Hooked series from the start, and in the majority of them, the player has got their chosen riff a little or even embarrassingly wrong. Not here. Doug is right on. Great player with a great tone.

I’ve watched many live videos trying to figure out how exactly he played it. I could never find one that showed his hands on that part. All the videos I found were guys sitting in with Paul Rogers or cover versions. No two guys played it the same. There’s probably 10 ways to play it and sound similar.

Paul Kossoff was a genius in his own right...his spars playing was a road that many players would follow....

I’ve heard countless guitar tutorials on this song but this one absolutely nails it. This is how you play it.
Doug's amazing, no question. But this isn't how Kossoff played it! On the riff Paul plays it with the A in the bass on the 5th fret and the chorus is played on the 12th and 14th frets respectively, A and D strings.
No i don't think it is .pretty sure it was in a open tuning if i remember correctly. But it's okay not knocking this guy most people don't play it like the original. Still sounds pretty good.

I've been playing "All Right Now" for decades. And much like Doug, I went through an evolution of how to play it. It was only this past year that I finally keyed in on the high A notes in the riff. It kinda blew my mind and ever since then I've played it that way. Definitely cool he noticed too. Actually, if you search Gov't Mule live doing the song, you'll notice Warren doing that, too. Absolute monster of a song.

I don't remember who it was, but there was someone on youtube who recorded all right now, and figured out how to make it sound exactly like the record. He figured out that it is really two guitars on the record. Which is why it confuses so many people. One plays the riff with the higher notes Doug talks about here, and the other plays only on the lower frets. The wonders of overdubbing a guitar track.

Sweet Talker by Whitesnake is a blues rock boogie classic with action around the A-chord played by barring across the 2nd fret just as demonstrated here by Doug.
Such a great guy & guitarist killer tone & look. Always seems very diplomatic in interviews. Cool whipped out the riff to snortin whiskey by Pat Travers.

I've chaced that high string sound and figured it was just two guitars playing it.

It is two guitar tracks, one panned left and one right. One part has the high note, the other is your regular A chord.
@@alexmak5038 that sounds about right. I tried playing the way Doug did by adding my pinky finger on high E string and it didn't sound correct to me, but with a second guitar backing it up. I believe you could get the right sound.
Pretty sure the original is two guitars but there are live recordings when it’s just one.
