The thing I've taken the most heart to from Jacob is when he's offered, in various forums, that there are no wrong notes, everything works with everything. It's a profound concept which he cheerfully and regularly demonstrates with ease, like falling out of bed in the morning. But for us mere mortals it makes music eminently more exciting.

Man, nowhere near the point of being able to make much sense of this BUT, this past month I have been genuinely learning and applying music theory on the keyboard and vocals...and last night picked up a bass for the first time and was able to immediately play the basics even with some transitions because I've learned so much already. I haven't been this focused and excited on learning something in a while, and I am rapidly picking it up and looking forward to being able to understand these things to their fullest. I love listening to Jacob just because I can't explain any of it, other than it somehow sounds right and his understanding of theory is incredible. Thank you!
I'm in a really similar situation. Been learning theory for a year now, applying it with the piano for 8 or 9 months and it really helps you develop your musical sense, versatility and skills way faster. It's amazing and exciting when you notice your progress and start to understand more and more. Jacob's beautiful music is really helpful in that way, really fun to explore and inmerse yourself more in way to understand it better. I feel you, dude.

I rewatched that video (for the 5th time) an hour before you uploaded this. My favorite detail is the mirror on the wall which actually shows both drummer Jacob and piano Jacob.
This might be my favorite Tiny Desk show of all time. It's so good, considering a lot of Jacob's releases are more saturated, crispy, and more pop centered (production wise). This is more stripped down and feels more natural, almost as if this is how it was originally meant to be. I like all of these versions better than the actual tracks to be completely honest, there's a lot more feeling behind it. Charles does a super good job explaining/talking about this performance, super amazing show and a super amazing breakdown!
I feel the beginning chord progression of All I Need is deeply influenced by Kirk Franklin's Love Theory. Definitely check that out. Such a funky groove.
Oh man, I got tickets to see him in May right before the pandemic started, I completely forgot about that! Gotta go see him live sometime, I'm so sad I couldn't last year.
Honestly, the most insane thing to me is - if you take as read that the takes you're watching in each corner are what you hear (as in no edits, tuning or overdubbing after the fact, neither of which seem to be going on, video&audio are perfectly sync all the time and I don't hear tuning) - that means he's performing these takes one before the other - and one of them FIRST. I mean, HOW? There are massive stretches of rests for all instruments - is he counting it all out, absolutely nailing vocal harmonies and groove/timing to parts he hasn't even played yet? (I mean, he could use guide tracks for his first part, but even then, nailing every part PLUS vocals all in one go is absolutely insane.)
I'm almost certain that the leftmost one is played/spoken first, because that Jacob leads all the spoken interludes and is _mostly_ doing _something_ during every part of it. It also _feels_ like the "easiest" part to play without any auditory melodic/harmonic context from other parts. I'm sure he used a click track at a minimum when recording it.

(For context, I produce/mix/play professionally in the pop/rock sphere, Melodyning vocals is a weekly activity.) There are things a voice will just naturally do when singing that get skewed when 'corrected', like having slightly different intonations of the same note depending on which vowel is sung (twangy sounds like aa/ee/eh are usually a bit higher due to how they're formed), or if they're in an ascending or descending phrase, or they can be slurred a bit if it's a fast line - not to mention just actually playing with intonation for emotional effect (ya know, going bluesy and shit). On top of that, the movement between notes gets screwy when the distance changes (the leaps get fractionally more rigid - giving it a synthy thing). I don't hear any of those things happening, whenever he doubles himself it's really tight pitch-wise, but not 'locked in place', so to speak. Everything tells me these are just incredibly good performances (for an example of 'if you're gonna edit like this why even pretend to play live at all', check out the Bieber live videos in Paris). Adam Neely had a good video where he Melodynes classic vocal performances and it gets...strange... if you know what it's supposed to sound like. Anyway, hope that was what you asked! Dunno how well-versed you are in music production of course. Have a good one! x

so 2 things. The craziest thing about this video is what it took to make it. I mean the video part of it is very easy. And for sure he likely already had a recording of guide tracks for all the parts so was definitely listening to a full mix when recording all the final live individual parts. But each part had to be a single take performance and to get it so perfect and tight over multiple songs (with banter even) takes a singular talent. and 2: He makes interesting and strange harmony work so well I think because of his intention and confidence. Stuff that may sound off when someone else accidentally comes across it work so well when he deliberately goes there with intention and purpose. He's a generational talent for sure.
I love that Jacob doesn't take his recordings too seriously. He's willing to take a song in a completely new direction, instrumentally, harmonically, etc.

Charles, I am gong to put this on every appropriate video but please please please do a 'Jazz musician reacts to Zappa'. I think there is enough of a musical anthology there to be considered a genre haha. He is by far one of the most interesting musicians/artists of his time, and his self taught attitude in everything, theory, to playing, to orchestration, is inspirational. I know it would be a hell of an undertaking because there is so much to actually cover about his music philosophy and it may be controversial, butt that would make one hell of a video too. feel like he brought about the same kind of beautiful dissonance to the culture of all music that Jacob Collier is currently doing. Please review city pop! It's a style of 70s/80s Japanese pop music that's often heavily jazz influenced. In recent years, the genre has had a resurgence on TH-cam. Lots of people agree that the "Holy Trinity" of city pop is 1. Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi 2. Stay with Me by Miki Matsubara 3. 4 AM by Taeko Ohnuki (which is probably the jazziest out of the three; I would start with this one!) He's not part of the Trinity but check out Tatsuro Yamashita because he pioneered the genre.
Interesting that you make the point about the ear not worrying about, or indeed "hearing" the rapid key changes, when Rick Beato has also just done a video about a Sergio Mendes song Never Going to Let You Go (" The most complex pop song...") which pretty much qualifies for the same idea. A shifting and odd set of key changes, that never jars, because the melody skims over the top in such a smooth fashion that you really don't notice the rapid shifts in chordal underpinnings. Worth looking out for!
Yo I know enough music theory from my arm chair to recognize that the chords at the beginning of All I Need and Love Theory are similar, though not the same, and I'm going to confidently dismiss the differences, as well as the entirety of both of the songs, which continue to diverge completely, because I want to pretend there's beef and feel smort. I sure wish I had time to sit down and learn the piano, man! I have so many wild chord progressions stuck in my head that I don't know the name of that just make sense in my head. Your channel is crazy! I love how you love music just like me! I just wish I had someone who had the same amount of love for it as me to talk to. I just want to speak music, but everyone around me doesn't get what I'm saying, and it's frustrating.

so 2 things. The craziest thing about this video is what it took to make it. I mean the video part of it is very easy. And for sure he likely already had a recording of guide tracks for all the parts so was definitely listening to a full mix when recording all the final live individual parts. But each part had to be a single take performance and to get it so perfect and tight over multiple songs (with banter even) takes a singular talent. and 2: He makes interesting and strange harmony work so well I think because of his intention and confidence. Stuff that may sound off when someone else accidentally comes across it work so well when he deliberately goes there with intention and purpose. He's a generational talent for sure.

I love that Jacob doesn't take his recordings too seriously. He's willing to take a song in a completely new direction, instrumentally, harmonically, etc.

Charles, I am gong to put this on every appropriate video but please please please do a 'Jazz musician reacts to Zappa'. I think there is enough of a musical anthology there to be considered a genre haha. He is by far one of the most interesting musicians/artists of his time, and his self taught attitude in everything, theory, to playing, to orchestration, is inspirational. I know it would be a hell of an undertaking because there is so much to actually cover about his music philosophy and it may be controversial, butt that would make one hell of a video too. feel like he brought about the same kind of beautiful dissonance to the culture of all music that Jacob Collier is currently doing. Just thought it would be worth a mention, even if its doesn't happen. Thank you for keeping generations intrigued by music, you are doing such great work and I appreciate it beyond brother!
Please review city pop! It's a style of 70s/80s Japanese pop music that's often heavily jazz influenced. In recent years, the genre has had a resurgence on TH-cam. Lots of people agree that the "Holy Trinity" of city pop is
1. Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi
2. Stay with Me by Miki Matsubara
3. 4 AM by Taeko Ohnuki (which is probably the jazziest out of the three; I would start with this one!)
He's not part of the Trinity but check out Tatsuro Yamashita because he pioneered the genre.
Interesting that you make the point about the ear not worrying about, or indeed "hearing" the rapid key changes, when Rick Beato has also just done a video about a Sergio Mendes song Never Going to Let You Go (" The most complex pop song...") which pretty much qualifies for the same idea. A shifting and odd set of key changes, that never jars, because the melody skims over the top in such a smooth fashion that you really don't notice the rapid shifts in chordal underpinnings. Worth looking out for!

Yo I know enough music theory from my arm chair to recognize that the chords at the beginning of All I Need and Love Theory are similar, though not the same, and I'm going to confidently dismiss the differences, as well as the entirety of both of the songs, which continue to diverge completely, because I want to pretend there's beef and feel smort. Really glad Charles led with the one song I have something to say about so I don't have to provide any commentary on the rest of his dope video. Peace

His lyrics always make me so happy, it's easy to get lost in all the layers of music but if his lyrics weren't beautiful I doubt I'd enjoy his music as much as I do.

Something that people never seem to discuss about Jacob is that he has these insane arrangements (harmonically and rhythmically) yet HE'S NOT READING CHARTS!. It's all in his head... the guy is a freaking savant.
I like listening to the interviews of the jazz greats about a million times more than I like to listen to jazz which is terrible for my Lyme disease that lives in my brain... the jazz is like torture... same with jacobs music however I appreciate him and I hope he pimps 432 more peace out world
