I'm surprised ISP didn't show the best part of the vichy focus tree. The part where Germany refuses you, you decide to go against them because of that and invites free france in. That results in your being annexed by free france and being kicked out of the game because you got annexed.... You don't get to play as free france......

I doubt they discussed it. They probably just had one person do the focus trees for all the British dependencies, and they just popped out as many routes as they could in a night's work.
Also, you have to remember some focuses are exclusively for the ai. You can always justify war with a simple click, but the ai needs to. That's probably why New Zealand and others have shitty routes, exclusively for the ai to leave the allies in ahistorical.
Yeah the game has to balance the ai the human vs the ai and multiplayer some focuses are made for each mode

The cool thing about Democratic Germany. Is that there is actually kind of a story with it. The buildup to war with the Soviets is cool and I only wish we got a more in-depth democratic tree. See the Military buildup of the Soviets is cool. But feels lacking when Germany gets no build-up and no events happen for Germany.

There's damn few factories actually in Africa, or in any of the other colonies anyway, let's be honest. If anything all those individual generic focus trees actually manage to give them all factories...in the several years it takes for them to get through them and ever produce a division to waste sitting around with.

He saw another chance when the Weimar Republic was coming to it's end, a dream Hitler finally buried for real. The Emperor was no fan of Hitler, he saw his good people as exploited victims under Hitler's rule. It's interesting and also sad, Germany could have had such a better alternative timeline with the royal blood restored. But certain globalist influences and nationalists both had no interest in that.

My first ever succesful game of Hoi4, when I was still learning the mechanics (IE, not managing to lose the german civil war...) I went democratic Germany, went to war with the Soviets, lost several million men and let Italy just run WILD with the Novus Imperium Romanum and they were soloing the Allies.
Since I had almost no manpower but had tons and tons of planes?
Italy got lit up like a christmas tree.
That was a fun game.

Democratic Germany is actually really fun, you can form the EU, still get cores on Austria, and have a massive but different war with the Comintern and some combat with Italy and such too. Oh and 6 research slots are really powerful, and you boost your faction too with that tech sharing.
When I played democratic Germany I had to fight a damn four-front war against france, the soviets, italy and britain, because for some reason they thought they had to declare on me.

As a long-time Canada player, although you do need to choose between completely eliminating the Depression or the Conscription Crisis, there are a number of other (non-exclusive) focuses that will reduce the impact of each of those, so you can half-solve the other problem.

About annexing Austria-Hungary as Germany: it doesn't really work. The Austrian annexation event has a chance to fire whenever you're in the same faction as Austria. Even when Hungary forms Austria-Hungary, their tag is still Hun and not Aus. So being in a faction with them wouldn't fire the event

To be honest that's most games for you. Vanilla most games always end up being a little shallow and the modders get more indepth with it - Which is kind of a hassle, too. There is no game on PC that isn't better modded, so not wanting to setup mods you always feel like you play an inferior product.
Because professionals work for money with not so flexible release dates to show products and have to start from zero (coding when not creating the engine, scripting, etc) so their dedication to most of these features end up becoming pretty secondary. The question is pretty stupid.

I hate the ahistorical focuses. I played an Italy game with Germany set to overthrow Hitler, since I didn't feel like playing the standard Italy Axis game, and Imperial Germany gets a focus that just kills Mussolini and forces you to join their faction. It's like when they built these focus trees, they never once stopped to consider that the AI had access to them, not just players.

The Orleanist France one confuses me. I played it like how I'd basically play a democracy France (focus defense, join allies once I'm declared on) and I figured since Jean III gives the +1 weekly stability I'd get to just chill at 100% stability for the whole game which would be neat, but my stability never went over 65% anyway. So there's really no point to it?

So there's an interesting quirk of the Canada-USA alliance path and the Australia-USA alliance path. You can't do the Canada version at war; the Australians don't have that restriction. This means, you can get pulled into the war by Britain and then go independent and then start a faction with USA and bring them into the war way earlier.
Vichy France is more like a back-up focus than "A interesting thing, that you have to loose to get it".

Before La Resistance, you could cheese the oppose Hitler focus and bypass Rhineland. Doing that, you could easily form the EU
Democratic Germany is pretty strong really, you get to lead a huge sphere and get 6 research slots. Aiding Finland or the baltic's defence lets you invade Soviets whilst they have the full purge debuff without them getting a defensive war motherland buff to compensate. Not tried it post La Resistance, but I found France would typically go Facist and join italy.
