  • Within days of freshly restoring my yellow John Deere 318, I took it to it's first job to see what kind of problems I might encounter.

    Pop had a 317 - then a 318. We used and cared for the 318 so much he had it restored. Both are gone now - but this brings back great memories! Mowing, rear scoop (hydraulic), snow blower - and Dad designed custom BSH front mounted hydraulic log splitter. Legendary 'lawn - and so much more' tractor!
    Thanks for the look back - great restoration!

    Miss those T-Ball days. One of my boys had a teammate who loved that soft dirt. So he had to slide into every base, then when he got home plate, he would slide then roll all over the place in slow motion. I was laughing my butt off, but Mom was rolling her eyes thinking of the dirt getting into her car and the washing later. 😄

    Might wanna leave a little dirt on that new paint. That yellow is loud in the sunlight. Almost had me reaching for my sunglasses in my dim lit living room. I definitely dig those big ribbed front tires. Fun to see ag rears and balloon fronts on such a small tractor.
    I'd probably go gray or black on the attachments. That way they still match other tractors and less work if you decide to change up Brunos color down the road.

    Great video, Neil! Good to see Bruno's first "Dirty Job" 🤣🤣🤣
    Don't change the color of the grading box. Let Bruno bask in the glow of his new color scheme.
    The surging is an odd one. That engine didn't do that before, right? Does he have a fuel filter? Could there be something in the fuel tank of the fuel lines restricting the flow of gas? I don't know.
    Silly of you to forget that break spring. At least it's an easy fix.
    The hydraulics lever being stiff could be nothing more than the lack of use after all of the "fresh" paint. I'd hit it with a little WD-40 just to be sure.
    Thank you for the video, Neil. Can't wait to see both of you in the next one!

    If you are following the JD construction paint scheme on the box blade, I would think the box itself would be yellow with a gray cutting edge and scarifiers. The hydraulic cylinder and axle I would think would be gray, and the wheels yellow. The hitch and tongue, also yellow. Looking at the frontier version though, everything but the scarifiers is yellow.

As far as paint goes, I say set the twins loose on it with spray cans and do a free form art project. Let their blossoming freak flag fly brother! It's a win, win. They can freely express creativity and Daddy is supporting that activity. You are gonna be under their thumbs in about 5 years anyway, may as well get it in now while you still have the chance. Neil it ain't my tractor but I'm just going to say it. That thing would look nice with an exterior mounted pre air filter like the big tractors. Plus didn't you do a video on the grader box If people wanted to build one? I know you said you use to make them. Can you please send me some pictures of that lower seat mount I want to try building that for the Cub Cadet.

    How expensive is it to put a new crank shaft and piston in the 318 original motor

      I don't know anymore these days. I'll bet it's pretty darn expensive.

    Do you ever think would swap a 430-420 rear end into Bruno?

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt it. I really have never seen a need for it to be honest. I had a 420 for a bit and never used the low range. I'm sure there is a use case for I'm not sure what it is.
