    Great video 👍 I didn’t know anything about EGR valve before I watched your video😮 it took me about an hour to take the EGR valve off…I don’t know previous owner ever cleaned the EGR valve…it was not easy to get it off😢I put 12,000 miles on to the van after I bought. I knew it loosing power when it goes up the hill at the time when I bought the van, but I thought because it was a big van…😮
    It's amazing that now I feel the van has so much power... go faster too 😂 thank you for your kindness to make the video 👍

    I did 36,000km on my 2019 V6 sprinter van and in the last 10K, the upshifts were very rough and jerky. The engine was hesitating at startup the morning when I took the van for service after a long road drip. I got the EGR cleaned by Mercedes for $350; the van is very smooth now, and upshifts are smooth as well. Now that I learned this from you, I can do it myself. Thanks

    Your video was well done and easy to follow, thanks. I have 19K miles on my 2021 Sprinter 2500 3.0L diesel. I started experiencing the engine sputtering, stuttering, or jerking while accelerating in the last 3000 miles. Taking it in to the dealer tomorrow.

      Not sure if the dealer figured out the issue, but that sounds a lot like what I experienced the first time I needed a EGR cleaning. If the dealer can clean it for free under warranty, let them do it.

    I'm not a professional mechanic either, but I've been working on cars for about 40 years now. Gummout products are good, no particular need to change brands. Stop by Harbor Freight, Northern Tools, Tractor Supply or similar and get a magnetic parts bowl. That will be much better than the plastic box for holding bolts. Thanks for the video!!

      New owner here also. I always use top tier diesel and occasional diesel additive. Did my first oil change at 5k. Will then follow at 10k service interval.

    • @IAmATravelAddict
      @IAmATravelAddict  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boosttv5688 I've been using renewable diesel lately, seems like most 76 has it. Someone told me they burn cleaner. I have noticed the soot build up in the EGR is a little less the last time I cleaned, but it could also just be in my head. I'm still using it because they're either cost the same or slightly cheaper than regular diesel here in CA.

    The MFs at James Motors in Lexington KY quoted $900 to clean the EGR valve and it had no issues running. The DEF gauge was not reading properly and they charged me $197 to diagnose that the DEF gauge was not reading properly as I told them. That fix was quoted at $3400.

      Sorry to hear about that. I plan to find a local independent MB shop once my warranty expires. Not sure if that's an option for you.

    • @the_first_resort940
      @the_first_resort940 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Problem is a independent shop can’t install a def tank because they won’t be able to program and code and reset the calculated fill level , 100% of the time I’ve seen tanks fail is because the customer runs so low on def the tank sucks air and the fill level sensor becomes crystallized with adblue and the tank collapses on it self . Then the customer fills the tank but it’s pressurized and won’t fill. Thus the gauge says empty or full, there’s a very good reason why your def light comes on and the tank still has 2-3 gallons in it…

    Good video. If you wish for this to be less of a problem, then be less tolerant of unlabeled fuel pumps. B5 ONLY! Any B20 or unlabeled B10 , which is very common in North America, will increase how often you have to do this maintenance, as well as lots of other problems.

    • @bikesbeersbeats

      You're fighting a losing battle with this. Most chevrons are B99 and Shell just recently started converting all their stations to renewable diesel. I see about 1-2 mpg drop when using renewable and engine sounds less smooth. Very frustrating.

    We have a 2020 V6 and our EGR valve is the cause of great anxiety for us. Luckily we learned how to clean it ourselves (or should I say my hubby😜), but it seems as if it needs to be cleaned much more regularly than expected. We bought the van in July of 2022 with a little less than 10K. Less than 2K miles after purchase it started to balk on its up shifting and cleaning the EGR valve fixed the issue. Again after about 2K miles that balking on up shifting started again. Cleaning the EGR valve fixed the issue. Now after only a few hundred miles the van sat for a full 2 months and upon starting it, the check engine light came on and the error code is the EGR valve.
    So our question is: do you know anyone else who has had such an issue? This seems pretty extreme to us😢

    • @IAmATravelAddict
      @IAmATravelAddict  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That doesn't sound right. The 6-8k interval is what I do to keep the engine running smoothly. But even without cleaning, it should last at least 20-30,000 miles without issues. I have heard of cases of bad EGR valves. If the van is still under warranty, I would bring it in to have them inspected.

    • @joycelynch4279
      @joycelynch4279 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, that’s our next step - to take it to the dealership. Sadly we have absolutely no confidence in them to actually take responsibility for this issue. Prior to getting the error code, we had taken the van in because of the shifting issue. It was only after making a stink did they actually clean the EGR valve because no fault was showing.
      Now that an error code has surfaced, we’ll see what they will do.

      I have a 2020 also and the fact that you only went 2k after cleaning before it acted up again tells me from my experience you may not have done a very thorough job cleaning it. I had the same issue one time when I was in a hurry and tried to do a quick cleaning....what I found out is the better you clean it, the longer it goes before you have an issue. Also if you idle for long periods of time that tends to gum the EGR up faster. The best thing I ever did for this issue was to take the EGR valve completely out of the van....it's only a matter of disconnecting the coolant hoses after you get it unbolted. (They make clamps to pinch off coolant hoses so it doesn't make a mess when you disconnect them btw) Also you might struggle to disconnect the hoses since they feel like they are glued on after you slide the clamps away. Once you have the EGR valve out of the van, I use my Harbor Freight Ultrasonic Cleaner (about $70) and pour in some Chem-Dip or Gunk Carburetor Cleaner that comes in the metal can for soaking parts....just put in enough to cover the valve up to the top of the cylinder when the valve is sitting upright. Then just turn the cleaner on for maybe not even 5 minutes and the valve will look brand new! (or just run it until it does)
      When you put it back together, use a thin film of anti-seize on the outside of the valve and also put some where the hoses connect so the next time everything comes apart easier. Cleaning the valve with the ultrasonic cleaner made a major difference for how long it goes between cleanings.
      Also found adding SeaFoam in the fuel tank pretty regularly helps the engine run much smoother in general.

      There's really no indication, there's no clicking or anything. I just use a very small flathead screwdriver, push the white tap down and out slightly, then try and see if the cable will pull free. If not, I push the white tap out a little further, then try again.

    Please people don’t clean these yourself, all 906/907 sprinters have an unlimited warranty extension on this part now. If you have a mechanically sticking fault MB will clean for free, you don’t even need a fault if a tech can replicate your jerking feeling. If you have an electrical fault or cleaning does not work they will replace. The part goes on off back order quite frequently. Mercedes has added the option of viewing idle hours on these vans because they are saying customers only have this isssue if they idle more than 10% of the vehicles total run time. PLEASE people don’t do these yourself, I’ve had a customer goes as far as drop a drill bit down his engine doing this cleaning and we had to replace his engine for him due to the bit making it ontop of the piston on cylinder 1 and getting smashed! I’ve pulled so many coolers because people smash the carbonized /rusted egr valve back in and it won’t come out. The trick is to rock the valve side to side and spin it as you are removing
