Given the disaster of Version 5, I'm going to hold off and wait for more reports from the trail. In the meantime Topo will continue to take market share from Altra because of quality issues.
We will say that there aren't too many differences on the 6 compared to the 5. Unfortunately, it appears that it might not be time for you to return to the Olympus yet.
Had to buy a pair of the new "Ultra 6" hiking shoes midway on my thru-hike on the Colorado Trail. The first day the new added heal padding literally tore apart my heal's skin causing deep blisters and abrasions! Fortunately I had large bandaids/neosporin, duck tape and extra hiking socks. Why was this change done???????
I was hoping it would be more like the 4:s. I loved them but now have the 5:s that I feel are more shallow, the foot don't sit as planted, and they also feel less wide. Still a nice shoe that I will keep, but I dont feel as much at home in them as in the old. Same for the Paradigm 7 vs 6 actually, I like the old ones better (have worn out three pairs with over 600 miles in each pair).
It's hard to estimate durability until it officially gets released. However, the lugs on our demo Olympus 6 are a little more set into the midsole than the Olympus 5.
The biggest difference we find between the two is the fit. The Olympus has Altra's widest Original Fit toebox, whereas the Timp is in the Standard Fit, leaning towards the narrow side. They are both considered maximum cushion trail shoes that have a Vibram Megagrip outsole. The Timp has Altra's EGO Max midsole foam whereas the Olympus as an undisclosed foam (it would be classified as a more premium quantic). There is a 4mm stack height difference, the Olympus being 33mm off the ground and the Timp 29mm.
They have not updated the foam. Our representative said they're using the same foam as the previous. If it were to be branded, it would be a more premium Quantic foam.
This shoe definitely needed the longer laces. It was hard enough getting them tied without any fancy lacing. It was virtually impossible to tie them with the Heel Lock lacing (also called marathon loop or runner's knot).
Question-the Olympus 5 had like a heel bumper in the heel cup that was too low to work for me. It looks like the heel padding is a bit different but I can’t be sure. Could you clarify? Thanks much!
Unfortunately, this is one of the models only available in one width. We will say that it has Altra's Original Fit toebox which happens to be the widest. However, it still leaves some to be desired.
Did they seriously go UP in weight? It’d be so easy to just do ego max to take ounces off. I don’t understand. I am happy with the 5 and found they weight much less than the weight Altra listed.
I'm curious if the new Olympus 6 has a structured heel or if it's softer, like the Topo Ultraventure, Hoka Speedgoat, or Lone Peak models. I have a Haglund's deformity, and shoes with a rigid heel structure tend to cause blisters and heel pain.
Of the trail shoes out there on the market, the Olympus 6 is one of the softer feeling shoes. It is very comparable in softness to the Speedgoat, if not a pinch softer even.
They are a great walker for hiking and trails. While you can use them for your everyday walker, the lugs on the outsole will wear down significantly quicker on pavement. Altra does have a road running/walking version of this model called the Via Olympus that we recommend taking a peek at. It has the same midsole mold with Altra's new EGO Max foam which gives it a softer ride. It is also an ounce lighter than the trail Olympus because it doesn't need all the bells and whistles for the trail.
I love the 4 and 5 I have 6 pair between the two. Only downside is the sole is sticky. I'm not a runner I'm more a big dude that lifts weights i wear them for work and daily walking. I'll be buying probably 3 pair when they drop.
We recommend checking out the Via Olympus 2, as it has the same midsole mold with Altra's more premium EGO Max midsole foam. It's also not as sticky on pavement and the outsole won't wear down as quickly.
@@RunMoore I have 2 pair of those they feel a tad to squishy side to side so I've defaulted to the olympus. It may also just ne I wear the olympus 11 hours a day 4 to 6 days a week.
what is going with this weird shoe release - why so many unofficial videos by people like you before it's even on the website? some sort of marketing con? this is bs and weird
Ummm, if you are unaware. The shoe TH-camrs get the shoe early to test it out and then get to do these pre-release reviews. These videos are not "unofficial". 😉
Hopefully the laces are longer than the 5’s
I have a pair and the laces are longer.
The laces are longer on our demo pairs. However, it is a sample so the final product will be slightly different.
Pretty bummed they didn’t go with a full outsole in this version.
We were hoping for a little more rubber too. Unfortunately, they have kept the outsole virtually identical to the previous version 5.

The tounge is also shorter & rounded! I know the Olympus 5 has had complaints about the tounge irritating the front of your ankles.
The tongue is definitely softer around the ankles. No more of that poking/digging feeling from the previous tongue.

loved the 4 ...the 5 gave me fitment issues top of foot was hurting went back to 4s sold both pair of 5s i bought.
The 6 will most likely have the same fitment issues as the 5 unfortunately. The fit on the Olympus 6 is nearly identical to the 5.

Still running w/ the Olympus 4, so I guess I'll wait and see if the lugs peel off..🏃♂🏃♂🏃♂
no way - I had lugs peel off on two pairs of the Olympus 5!

@antonroux6737
Same here. Lugs start coming off of two different pairs first day.
Would you recommend the Timp 5 vs the Olympus 6 (or even the 5)?
Really grateful for the Altra reviews you do!

Why is it so heavy? Is that for a men's size 9? If so, crazy in 2024.
It is quite a beefcake of a shoe, weighing in at 12.2 oz / 345 g. It is, however, a smidge lighter than the 5 which weighed in at 12.3 oz / 350 g
Any updates to the foam?
They have not updated the foam. Our representative said they're using the same foam as the previous. If it were to be branded, it would be a more premium Quantic foam.
so glad they have longer laces, I literally cannot tie my 5's, and those shoes are pathetically narrow for being "original" footshape
This shoe definitely needed the longer laces. It was hard enough getting them tied without any fancy lacing. It was virtually impossible to tie them with the Heel Lock lacing (also called marathon loop or runner's knot).
Where are Altra shoes made at? Thanks.
越南
@runmore, could you provide the width measurements?
even if it’s just the demo shoe you have there!
The width we measured is approximately 4.5 inches at the widest point. The measured shoe was a size 9.
Look's great 👍🏻 💪🏻
👍👍

The heel pads are a pinch higher than the previous version. However, they are still quite low to where some people might still have issues with it.
Is this model deeper/has more volume than the previous model?
No. We find that the Olympus 6's fit is about the same, if not a pinch shallower than the 5.
Do the Olympus have good support for the arch of the foot?
No, but it has moderate sidewalls.

Thank you for the answer .
Hope they have wide!

looks nice , but it will break in 2 months…😢

Duck yeah😂
Thanks for quacking!

You should try the Via Olympus. It’s the road version and not as sticky of a sole.🤙
@@dinkthinks3958 have the new version I'm a fat so the via is a tad to squishy but I wear them alot.

The laces on Olympus 5 were comically short

Don't buy this shoe. It's much worse than the Olympus 5.
