In Korea (Incheon) there was a clearing in the woods at the bottom of a trail up a mountain. The one barbell was some kind of axle and the plates were worn out flywheels. I loved that gym.
I think it also had to do with the fact that there wasn't any Internet and real television, people couldn't travel, couldn't say what they actually thought. Almoust like a prison. And just like in prisons , people focus on alowed activities that keep them sane.
In summary, poverty eliminated choices thus making the decision process of what to focus on easier. Also, so many Soviets were involved in weight lifting that it attracted more quadrant 1 athletes!
