  • Joker: Folie à Deux is the latest film from DC Studios and is the last film before James Gunn's DCU kicks off with Superman: Legacy. The movie was developed alongside some of the DCEU films during Warner Bros.' previous regime. This Joker sequel centers on Arthur Fleck and a new iteration of Harley Quinn, incorporating musical elements. It takes a different approach in adapting aspects of the Batman mythos from DC Comics. Unfortunately, the film falls flat as a sequel, suffering from poor pacing, too many unnecessary elements, and the regression of Arthur Fleck's character.

Love and Thunder at least had a solid premise if Tiaka actually put effort, you could have told a cool serious story about Thor losing the love of his life to a God Butcher.
Jonkler 2 was pointless to begin with. Not only did the first film felt like the Batman references could have been removed and nothing would be lost but this only confirms it had no intentions on making him feel more like the Joker. I was really hoping this movie would make Arthur FEEL more like the Joker rather than just a killer in clown makeup, but I guess effort is too much to ask for in the streaming age.

The Thor comparison doesn't make sense though. Tiaka didn't give a shit about Thor and shit all over his lore. Ragnarok is a funny movie but it's a garbage Thor movie. Even if he didn't want a sequel it was going to have a sequel, it's part of the MCU franchise. Joker on the other hand didn't need a sequel whatsoever, the ambiguous ending gets completely ruined by a sequel existing.

You know what's really funny about this? The ending is literally what Willem Dafoe pitched to Todd Phillips when Willem Dafoe publicly acknowledged all the fan casting of himself as Joker. Willem Dafoe pitched someone being really inspired by Arthur's Joker but slightly different, essentially having two Jokers in the same film with one of them eventually killing the other. And as you can see that idea got to Todd Phillips. But Dafoe wanted the two Jokers to actively back and forth with the conflict driving the film, instead of a random inmate killing Arthur and going on to become the "real" Joker. Willem Dafoe has a better film idea than Todd Phillips did.

    Joker: Folie à Deux
The first movie was something different. People went in expecting fight scenes and explosions, thinking it would be a typical DC superhero movie, but it was nothing like that. It offered a fresh perspective on the Joker, shifting the usual narrative to present a grounded, psychological portrayal of a man forgotten by a society that is growing colder and more neglectful, slipping through its ever widening cracks. It was a character study that pushed boundaries and raised questions about the line between victim and villain.
From the opening scene of Joker: Folie à Deux, we are reintroduced to Arthur, but this time he is not alone, his shadow (The Joker), is there with him. The shadow closing the closet on Arthur symbolizes the mental battle raging inside his mind, where the joker represents a personality that developed due to neglect and past experiences that left him weak and mentally unstable, much like an “extra” in a movie where fame and glory are what people look up to. This shadow gave Arthur everything he wanted, to be famous, recognizable, the headline of the news, fulfilling his needs.
In the sequel, Harley is supposed to represent the audience.“You are not The Joker anymore.” That is what the viewers felt at the end of the movie; they wanted to see the Joker and Harley go on a rampage, committing violence as The Clown Prince and Princess of Crime. Both the audience and Harley are disappointed when Arthur chooses his human side over the persona of the Joker.
By the movie’s end, Arthur is killed by someone who will live up to “The Shadow.” Someone closer in age to Batman and Harley. He was psychotic, unpredictable, and deranged, making him more fitting to carry the title of the Joker.
The Joker duology offers a more realistic and controversial take on the character. While many wanted the first movie to show the Joker on a killing spree with his maniacal, crackling laugh evoking chaos and madness, they were met with a challenging dive into his psyche. In the second movie, audiences expected the Joker to escape from prison first attempt and go on with The Princess of Crime to perpetuate a cycle of violence and wreak havoc on Gotham. Instead, they share Harley’s disappointment with Arthur, who fails to live up to the fantasy of their chaotic crusade, leaving both the audience, and Harley feeling let down.

As someone who is a fan of musicals, making a musical sequel to something that wasn’t originally a musical just immediately set off alarm bells. Musicals as a genre very rarely do sequels, and those musical sequels that do exist are almost always ass. The original film did have multiple dancing scenes, but those were very grounded in the gritty, realistic tone of the movie, and gritty realism is something musicals rarely if ever do well. So you’re combining multiple elements that tend to be poisonous to musicals and just expecting it to work.
I could see a stand alone Joker musical in the vein of Sweeny Todd working, like if they just took the original film, made a musical version of it, and then filmed actors performing it on stage and put it up on HBO Max.

I've never seen a sequel of such a highly regarded film handled by the same writer/director get executed so badly. If another unnamed inmate goes on to become the "real" Joker, then what was the point of having Arthur Fleck as a character at all, what was the point of the first film? I remember when Joker: Folie a Deux was announced as a musical sequel and I saw a tweet that said, "This is either going to be the best sequel of all time, or the worst sequel of all time." The reviews speak for themselves.

Todd Philips wtf happened💀 i think this movie has just made me realize that he got lucky with the first movie because he basically just copied taxi driver. And it worked. But here, he tried to copy courtroom dramas and failed unbelievably. This movie just had no reason to justify its existence, and he clearly couldn’t find it. If the musical scenes were actually serving the plot, and the plot actually developed his character from the first movie, this could’ve been cool. But this movie literally regresses his character. At least the movie LOOKS amazing so I’d probably still watch it over some mid marvel movie. But damn this really ruins the first movie

I am not surprised. A lot of critics I like to watch and even my closet friends who saw this early said it wasn't great. As someone who enjoyed the first film(not my cup of tea, movie wise but a good movie), I will probably skip out on this film. Todd Philips has always floundered with sequels(Hangover Part two) and I was hoping he could do something with Joker. A film that to be honest; didn't need a sequel. It told a competent story that was a good one off. But alas, because it made a billion dollars and was cheap, WB wanted a sequel. I do commend creatives for trying to be different but if you fail to execute that, the effort is meaningless. As for me, I'll be rewatching The Wild Robot over the weekend(fantastic movie) or watching the Penguin(which is amazing) instead.
