Tremendous acting and writing. It really made me appreciate her character more as well. Her character was tremendously devoted to her family: and despite her entire life changing in that moment, she doesn’t want any effect on her kids.

She also then immediately turns on a dime and focuses on their kids and leaves him to watch and think about those he betrayed. I'm not sure Rickman's character fully gets it. Although, it could be the acting choices he made that leaves his reaction ambivalent.
Kit Harington is totally right. That Love Actually moment is one of the greatest moments of screen acting ever, and no should have to apologize for thinking that.
For me it’s when she confronts her husband in Love Actually. Normal, hurt and near tears, and then she turns on a dime and smiles for her children. It was awesome. That and all her acceptance speeches. Especially her Golden Globes letter from Jane Austen.
Somewhere on TH-cam is a short video with a followup on what happened to all the characters in the movie. They skipped Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman’s scene because of course he’s no longer with us. But the producers also felt there was no way this relationship could’ve had any sort of a happy ending that anyone would have wanted to hear about.

It's weird, I never realised that some people think the guy had accidentally swapped the presents. No. He'd bought his mistress a lovely gold trinket and his wife a CD. That's what makes it so sad.
He specifically comments about the CD being Joanie Mitchell, whom she loves, to continue her love education. The fucker knew exactly who was getting the necklace.
It wasn't just a gold trinket, it was a slightly mishapen heart stabbed with a single ruby like a drop of blood. The CD featured "I've looked at life from both sides now" where there is illusion over reality, and she must choose.
Believe it or not, the guy I was dating at the time and saw this movie with actually gave me this CD for my Christmas gift. WTF??!! I never really enjoyed Joanie Mitchell’s singing despite her being one of Canada’s national treasures, and I thought, “Did this guy actually *watch* the film? The acid test of a first-rate actor is that their performance is so thoroughly compelling they draw you in completely, the suspension of disbelief utterly prevails, and you fully forget yourself. Emma Thompson always does that for me plus she ices the cake as well by helping to create a storytelling alternate reality that at least some small part of me never again wants to believe is unreal. She etches her characters on her audience's SOULS using the full complement and range of voice, body language, complex patterns of gestures, and exquisite TIMING. It hit me hard. This version was the bookend. A mature woman with a lifetime of experience singing, not some lighthearted young girl. A perfect song choice to amplify a stellar acting performance.
The Love Actually scene is a masterpiece! For that alone, she should have received an Oscar, or at the very least, a nomination. It is without doubt my favorite scene ever from a movie. Adore her!
The criticism against Love Actually was so unfair. Funny how the general audience had no problem following all the story lines but the "professional" critics did

Jessica Eichler that was soooo good! Her acting, and the entire cast- it was so sad and beautiful!!! Loved her interactions with Paul Giamatti- showed her soft side
Emma Thompson might only have had 5 minutes of screen time in the entire Harry Potter series but she was undoubtedly the best performance. Such a brilliant actress. I can't contemplate how much talent she possesses
The crying scene in Love Actually shreds me every time. But the scene that equally shreds is in Sense & Sensibility, when her sister lay dying and she is holding her hand, and begs, Do not leave me all alone.
I must say, for me that the scene from Love Actually is one of the most monumental scenes in cinema. Great actress, great writing, great music so moving and relatable to so many people, you can read so many human emotions in it.
That scene in Love Actually... OMG. I have to leave the room when that scene comes up in Love Actually because it is so real & so raw... too real & too raw; beyond acting... and so so brilliant. Well I think it still is... as I leave the room every time; I can't watch it now as it's too real. Emma Thompson is just amazing - 😍
Emma: delivers an amazing and genuine performance during the crying in the bedroom scene. Also Emma: Oh, it's all Richard's writing LOL she's very humble
It’’s hard to believe, isn’t it, that Emma Thompson just gets more and more interesting and impressive as each year passes. It seems that she touches a part of every great project, and every great project she touches is the better for her having been a part of it.
Emma is my favorite female Brit actress actually...and Alan Rickman was/is and always will be in my heart as a great man...Both had chemistry that cannot be replicated by anyone !... Colin Firth and Alan are my #1! ....In America... #1 Actor/Actresses Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock...xxxooo
when i studied Much Ado, i fell in love with Emma's portrayal of Beatrice which really got me through my english studies. really shows her range. try comparing Beatrice to Nanny McPhee or her host personality in Late Night or PL Travers or Trelawney. the. lass. can. act.
I loved her in MUCH ADO, and I think especially so in her scenes with Denzel Washington. Shakespeare's lines became utterly, spontaneously HUMAN in their exchanges.
OMG that scene exactly what brings me here right now, I just watched Sense & Sensibility last night right after I finished the book, and her portrayal of Elinor is astonishing especially the ending scene where she finally broke down in tears after Edward proposed to her it hit me hard in feels.
@@kaylabear8426 The story is from her and her husband Greg, she wrote the screenplay, co-produced and starred as Emilia's mother😊 I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of the song but with this amount of Emma-involvement not seeing that movie is simply NO OPTION
Trelawney’s hair is how Hermione’s was _supposed_ to be. Re: Love Actually, a child therapist I knew some years back _loved_ the fact that Thompson’s character was such a good Mum, that she she kept her distress private, so as not to ruin her children’s Christmas. Having been the child of a mother who had no compunction about sharing his misery, and did in fact ruin at least one Christmas, I have to say I agree with him.
That scene of her crying, along with all her scenes after that part, where she struggles inside but tries to pull herself together, are literally showing a massive talent! Especially at the end of the film, where it seems that she decided to stay in this marriage but the way she looks at her husband and the way she pronounces the word "home" are not the same anymore, and never will be the way they were...We really see a hurt woman in real life, not an actor, because of the down-to-earth, real and so to the point acting of her! I loved her because of this movie, she is a bright soul full of talent!
The difference between British and American interviewers: British: Focuses on work and thoughts of the person being interviewed. Refreshing and positive. American: Lets dig up some dirt so this interview is a Tell All and Sell All. Ugh!

I do agree with this, but I must admit I also love watching the Hollywood Reporter roundtables; learning about the craft and process is so much more fulfilling than their personal lives.
Every single video I watch with this particular presenter is always amazing; he’s so brilliant at speaking to celebrities as if they are true people (that they are) and not just public figures, and not making them uncomfortable. It literally always seems like two friends talking to each other, love him.
That scene in Love Actually is, IMHO, some of the best work on film. Definitely among the most moving... I can't breathe as tears flow every single time I see it. 💓 you, Emma.
I absolutely adore this interview. It's so nice to see someone interviewing who is genuinely a huge fan but conducts this appreciation in such a candid and professional way. And Emma is as humble and unassuming as ever. SO lovely, but I would have loved to have seen Saving Mr Banks mentioned! She was outstanding in that.
My favorite has always been Sense and Sensibility. The scene where Hugh's character comes back and she just weeps out loud and then starts laughing. Chills
Great interview. That scene where she cries in “Love Actually” always makes me cry. I miss Alan Rickman. He married his lifelong common-law wife on his deathbed. Also, in “Love Actually” Liam Neeson plays a widower. Sadly, he really became one. He was married to Natasha Richardson, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and sister of Joely Richardson.
Having lived with the love of my life taking his last breath on my lap 2 weeks before our wedding day and accidentally holding his funeral on that day I can assure you with no hint of doubt that it is not nearly as romantic as you think it is
She really is a genius. Writing, acting, producing, being a wife and Mom, funny as hell, can have you laughing to the point of peeing your pants or just bawling like a baby. That Love Actually scene, with that fab. Jazzy version of Both Sides Now playing, is a total heartbreaker.
Actually, I found her crying at the end of 'Sense' (as she calls it), the best crying scene ever. I'm in tears every time she does that little hick-up in her cry. It is so wonderfully realistic.
I watched Emma Thompson as Sybil since I was 12 years old, I've probably watched those movies at least 10 times, yet last year was the first time I recognized Emma.. And that was only because I saw her in a "behind the scenes" on youtube.. And that scene from Love Actually? Always heart breaking, no matter how many times I've seen it, it always makes me cry.
What really got me in Love Actually was after she had been crying her husband either couldn’t tell or didn’t care to notice at all that her eyes were a bit pink and tear streaks have gone down her cheeks.
For me this scene was so amazing because it mirrored my own experiences or that of other women in my environment: to act that good that most husbands don't notice any sorrows, especially when kids are around.
I love Emma Thompson! That scene in Love Actually moves me every time I see it, it’s so beautifully acted and the Joni Mitchell track played over it is so apt. Emma is brilliant
In the scene from Love Actually where she cries and the way that she puts her hands up with her palms toward her face...she does that in Late Night also, and it makes me cry in both films. She is perfection professionally and personally.
I've always loved that scene from Love Actually. It feels so real. When you're devastated, want to cry but its not the right time, so you suck it up and keep going.
“Sigh no more”, Emma’s (& the film’s) first line in the glorious’Much Ado About Nothing’, chimes well with “Don’t sigh, don’t cry”, Emma’s favourite advice (courtesy of director James Ivory). Incidentally, loved Emma’s mention of “Shaky spearo”, which reminded me of “whatever happened to...all those Shakespearoes”, from The Stranglers’ song No More Heroes’.
This dude is my favorite interviewer. I feel like the guests actually want to hang out with him and his questions are always really good and never cringe
One movie, that made Emma Thompson present for me was her role in Saving Mr. Banks. Fantastic film, fantastic character, fantastic actress. It was overall fantastic.
The Love Actually scene is consummate acing at it's very very best, enhanced beautifully by Joni Mitchell's later life version of "Both Sides Now"........
- It ‘gets me’ too ... every single time I watch that scene, I well up. That little smoothing of the bedspread at the end is a perfect touch ... trying to look as if everything is under control. Wipe the tears away and put that smile back on the face even though you’re dying inside. The best scene ever!
The first 10 second was probably the best opening of all BBC with Ali Plumb interview! Keep coming back for more everytime you need something to cheer you up!
Trelawney always reminds me of an old English teacher I had at one of my school's . We used to laugh about her, but I realise now it's too late that she was a really good teacher. Has anyone seen the out takes where Emma is fantastic & clumsy while listening to a speach at the dinner table. Emma is just amazing at anything she does, she's is a gift. In Love Actually I cry EVERY time. You really feel for her character. I love Emma's personality in real life, she's just a hilarious person who is confident in who she is & no one messes her around, she's not afraid of being silly & having fun.
Emma Thompson’s crying in Love Actually is one of the very few memorably good acting scenes that stick in my mind. There’s also Jack Nicholson’s ‘You can’t handle the truth’ in A Few Good Men and the little girl who out-acted every other child actor that ever existed in The Florida Project’ with her final scene. There are lots of good actors, but those memorably great scenes that stick in your mind forever are few.
I've loved Emma Thompson for years. She's just this powerhouse, yet completely accessible and real in all of her roles. What am amazing mind & wit she she has. Kudos & happy holidays, Emma! Love from W AU xx
It's something of a double-take moment for me additionally because of Emma and Imelda Staunton having worked/appeared together previously in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (1993). Faces and voices are super-memorable when the acting is so good.

Emma Thompson’s crying scene in “love actually” is masterful.
I must say, for me that the scene from Love Actually is one of the most monumental scenes in cinema. Great actress, great writing, great music so moving and relatable to so many people, you can read so many human emotions in it.
I was lucky enough to meet her a few years ago and she was absolutely lovely! She’s such a humble person which such a good sense of humour!
Oh you lucky thing! Now that's a good memory you'll keep.
So jealous!! She seems extremely genuine:)).
That scene in Love Actually is one of the most heartbreakingly relatable things on film.
Also Emma: Oh, it's all Richard's writing
LOL she's very humble
It’’s hard to believe, isn’t it, that Emma Thompson just gets more and more interesting and impressive as each year passes. It seems that she touches a part of every great project, and every great project she touches is the better for her having been a part of it.
Tears are easy to fall when that scene out of Love Actually is shown. Big heart from Melbourne, Australia.
big heart from Melbourne to you too!

That's my exact opinion too
Colin and Emma are my #1 over everyone else
@@anastasiah9636 In Britain or world?
Donna lee Flournoy-Mancuso world!
@@anastasiah9636 Yea!!!
when i studied Much Ado, i fell in love with Emma's portrayal of Beatrice which really got me through my english studies. really shows her range. try comparing Beatrice to Nanny McPhee or her host personality in Late Night or PL Travers or Trelawney.
the. lass. can. act.
Fine. But then if you love her so. I bid thee:
"Kill ... Claudio."
I loved her in MUCH ADO, and I think especially so in her scenes with Denzel Washington. Shakespeare's lines became utterly, spontaneously HUMAN in their exchanges.
That Love Actually crying scene and the scene where she confronts him after the Nativity. I just break down, she is gorgeous and what an actress
Remains Of The Day 😍👏🏼 Sublime movie with the finest performances I’ve seen by Hopkins & Thompson.
i had to scroll way to much to find this movie referenced! how is it that they don't talk about it , and only show like 10 seconds of it?!
The crying scene in love actually is so real. You can really feel the character’s pain.
That "bit"where she cries in Love Actually just tears me up. I love her and how she makes her roles her own.
I personally loved her cry in Sense and Sensibility at the end when Edward proposes to her. I just love her! Love you Emma!!!
Me too. Gets me every time
Yes, absolutely first class acting!
Love that scene...I’ve watched it over and over. ❤️
OMG that scene exactly what brings me here right now, I just watched Sense & Sensibility last night right after I finished the book, and her portrayal of Elinor is astonishing especially the ending scene where she finally broke down in tears after Edward proposed to her it hit me hard in feels.
@@kaylabear8426 The story is from her and her husband Greg, she wrote the screenplay, co-produced and starred as Emilia's mother😊
I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of the song but with this amount of Emma-involvement not seeing that movie is simply NO OPTION
Ohhh, that crying scene in Love Actually. My heart breaks every time.
That Love Actually scene breaks me every time I watch it, and the soundtrack over that piece is stunning. Bravo Emma 👏🏻
That scene, crying in the bedroom: Ithought I was going to faint. Pure pain.
The difference between British and American interviewers:
British: Focuses on work and thoughts of the person being interviewed. Refreshing and positive.
American: Lets dig up some dirt so this interview is a Tell All and Sell All. Ugh!
Lass-in Angeles yep , totally agree .
Well Hollywood is filled with tape worms. The most disgusting people I've met were from southern California. The biggest rats from all over the country move there and try to make their bones. Paparrazi as well
The Brits actually listen....the U.S. guys make it all about themselves.
@@StandWatie1862 Not just Hollywood, its all over the US. There is some great talent in Hollywood, but they manufacture Narcissism as their main export.
Love Actually intro me to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell, still get me each time I steam this movie. damn onions 😢
This woman is so talented and yet so down-to-earth! She's adorable! Love her dearly!! ♥️
Alan and Rima married 4 years before he died.
That scene from Love Actually is amazing. She doesn't even realize how great she is
God don't we all absolutely love this woman! And she's a great actress too 🤧
Emma Thompson in that scene in Love Actually is my all-time favorite scene in a movie. So perfectly delivered, so deeply touching and human!
I love all of Emma Thompson's movies, but there is a special place in my heart for Sense and Sensibility.........
Mine, as well.
she made my childhood with Nanny McPhee
every single child in primary school watched that film
I'm retired and it's one of my favourite films.❤️
What really got me in Love Actually was after she had been crying her husband either couldn’t tell or didn’t care to notice at all that her eyes were a bit pink and tear streaks have gone down her cheeks.
Yesssss! I always wondered that, did he notice and not care or was he just so uncaring that he didn’t even notice… either way, it’s heartbreaking 💔
For me this scene was so amazing because it mirrored my own experiences or that of other women in my environment: to act that good that most husbands don't notice any sorrows, especially when kids are around.
Emma is my absolute favorite actress. She's relatable. She's stunning. Simply amazing. 💜
I must say, I LOVE Emma Thompon ACTUALLY!
That scene in Love Actually is indeed brilliant
“Sigh no more”, Emma’s (& the film’s) first line in the glorious’Much Ado About Nothing’, chimes well with “Don’t sigh, don’t cry”, Emma’s favourite advice (courtesy of director James Ivory).
Incidentally, loved Emma’s mention of “Shaky spearo”, which reminded me of “whatever happened to...all those Shakespearoes”, from The Stranglers’ song No More Heroes’.
This dude is my favorite interviewer. I feel like the guests actually want to hang out with him and his questions are always really good and never cringe
She was good in the children act. An Underrated recent movie.Great cast in that too.
Watched it the other day - brilliant film.
I have never heard of that one. I must search for it.
Sense and Sensibility is my favorite movie. I love everything about it, it’s perfect.
“Thank YOU, darling”. Emma’s an actual angel
Love Actually scene... she should have gotten an award for that scene.
Emma, so well spoken, so talented, so gorgeous and bloody hilarious. Love her to bits
Emma Thompson 💐 💐 💐 made me love Joni Mitchell ❣ 💓 ❣ and what she said was true; pulling yourself together for the kids; Wonderful actress 💓 💓 💓
This is how you do an interview. She's a great actress and authentic as hell.
The first 10 second was probably the best opening of all BBC with Ali Plumb interview!
Keep coming back for more everytime you need something to cheer you up!
I will never forget the Love Actually scene. Heartbreaking. Fantastic acting!
She is so sweet and smart and beautiful.
I also loved her "Stranger Than Fiction". Great interview!
Yes!
Emma Thompson - one of my top favourite actresses. When an actor/actress can make you cry by just watching them do so, that's pretty powerful
She's so gorgeous and talented. Those cheekbones! I'm a big admirer.

One of the Harry Potter scenes that will always stick out with me is when Trewlaney was fired. Absolutely broke my heart.
It's something of a double-take moment for me additionally because of Emma and Imelda Staunton having worked/appeared together previously in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (1993). Faces and voices are super-memorable when the acting is so good.
Stranger than Fiction is one of my favourite movies and it is so underrated. I absolutely adored Emma Thomspon's role.
