Fun fact about the people playing music on the titanic: I respect them so much, because they actually played until they drowned. They were so concerned about other’s wellbeings and doing their live’s passions that they literally played music until they died.
I heard that in the actual events of the titanic the really did play until they submerged to comfort people with one last song.

That whole Nearer My God To Thee scene wrecks me every time...the old couple in the bed and the mom reading to her kids... then the band leader thanking his bandmates. Just heartbreaking.
The water was -2 C, below freezing. The baker that rode the ship down on top like an elevator drunk a whole bunch of booze beforehand and his BAC was so high that he managed to survive treading literally freezing water with just swollen feet. He also threw resistant women into the lifeboats and threw furniture into the water for people to float on. Charles Joughin, my hero. When in doubt, get plastered.

I saw this in theatres with my parents. We went to the late show on New Years Eve and right when the boat started going down someone in the back yelled "Happy New Year!" Someone in the front yelled "Shut the fuck up. People are dying!" One of my favorite movie experiences.

My favorite moment in the theater was when Ruth asked Rose if she wanted to see her mother working as a seamstress, and some guy at the front loudly answered "YES!" It got a big laugh. :D That's right up there with the time when I saw _The Lion King_ (the far superior original movie from 1994) and Mufasa had just been stampeded to death, there's this one last wildebeest who is way behind the others, and a woman in the audience said "He all late!" :D

Fun fact: the person that was drinking from the flask next to Rose and Jack on the rail when the ship was sinking, is IN FACT an ACTUAL survivor on the Titanic, he couldn't feel the cold from the water from all the alcohol in his system. That's what saved his life that night.

Joughin was born in England in 1878 to parents of modest means. I looked him up for you both.

The suicidal character was one of the few survivors. This wasn’t a story about a woman sacrificing everything for a man. It’s about a man giving a woman the confidence and courage she needed to walk away from a life she hated. Jack showed Rose there were better ways to live, and Rose fought to survive so she could find a life worth living.
"But now you know there was a man named Jack Dawson and that he saved me in every way that a person can be saved." One of my favorite lines.

Wow, I never thought about it that way before. When Jack met Rose she was on the brink of physically letting go and falling to her death, she felt she had already let go emotionally. And yet, Jack comforts and reassures her again at the end to not let go, this time figuratively, and to live her life. When Jack died, Rose was content to die with him on the ocean, and she closes her eyes as she sees the boat going away. But then she remembers her promise and opens her eyes and starts calling to the boat to come back

When we first meet Rose, we can tell her upper class status, but how trapped and confined she is. Her dress is tight fitting and covers her from head to toe. And as she falls in love with Jack, she is wearing more revealing clothing that is more loose and flowing as she gains more freedom and independence. The costume designs won an Oscar.

I love how Cal told Jack earlier "What made you think you could put your hands on my fiance?!" only for Rose to tell Jack later "Put your hands on me, Jack", basically giving a huge middle finger to Cal and her mother and deciding that Jack is the one she truly wants.

Yep. Literally and figuratively! I love this movie’s attention to detail. When the 3D version came out, Cameron asked the SFX team to put the correct star positions that would’ve been there at the time the Titanic sank. He cared about this a lot!

Yes she later took control of the lifeboat by openly flouting Hitchens protests when she had the ladies take turns rowing to keep warm . She made her infamous threat and firmly kept control of the lifeboat after having enough of his boorish behavior ( some would later claim he was drunk ) when Hitchens refused to let them row towards the rescue ship Carpathia insisting it was there to pick up the bodies of the dead. Yes it was sad that her battle with Hitchens and the actions that made her a bonified legend of female badassary when it wasn't a common thing were cut out of the film.

@@ellieplayz3020 Still no. The iceberg hits at at 1 hour and 40 minutes in. From that point there is about 94 minutes left of the movie and that includes the credits. Idk why people make these things up, then it circles the internet and becomes "facts" lol it's just not true. Although there is a video on TH-cam where it shows sinking in real time. And that is 2 hours and 40 minutes long.

Rose is an amazing character in every aspect and she truly personifies the human will to live.
She could have easily given up on that board and the only thing thst kept her going was her promise to Jack.
She CHOSE to live. She activly chose it.
Not only did she live, but she spent her life honoring Jack, by doing everything they talked about.
Just the fact that she was able to overcome this unbelivable trauma, and, on top of that, manage, to some extent, to move on, fall in love again and lead a happy and meaningful life.
That is what makes Rose a true hero in my eyes.
And for me, that is what this story is about.
The director James Cameron actually did the drawing for the movie. And what’s even crazier is he is left handed but he did the drawing right handed because jack is right handed
True, albeit if you look really closely, his right hand (which looked a bit old for Jack) was actually only tracing the original drawing that his left hand had made--you can see the image showing very slightly through the paper. Another bit is that this was actually the first scene that was shot with both Winslet and DiCaprio. Cameron thought it would make everything as awkward and novel as possible, and if anything, it worked to their advantage.
He also only filmed it because he wanted to go down to the sub to see it and he payed loads and he thought I might as well make a movie about it and made billions I watched a documentary and he spoke about it he’s probs been down there like 15 plus times
@@natalieyates841 While there is definitely an element of truth in what you said, you left out a lot of context, including the effect that the dives had on Cameron. To start with, Cameron has always had an abiding love for science, exploration, and especially the ocean depths. He was familiar with the story of Titanic, of course, and Robert Ballard's discovery of the shipwreck in the mid-1980s gave him more of an interest, but not a real spark for wanting to make a film about it. He'd seen other films, such as _A Night to Remember_ , but wasn't particularly inspired by the human side of the story at that point. He was still obsessed with the possibility of nuclear annihilation, which was the core of most of his films.
Then about 10 years later in the 1990s Cameron saw an IMAX film of the Titanic shipwreck, and really wanted to go down there to explore it in person. That was when he came up with the basic idea for a Titanic film that he pitched to Fox executives in the hopes of getting them to pay for the expeditions, so yes, it was mostly about wanting to explore--the film was still just an excuse for it, at this point. But everything changed once Cameron saw the shipwreck for himself, and the real life story of the Titanic became tangibly, viscerally real for him on a personal level. Then he started writing the screenplay, and delved more deeply into the stories of the people involved than before, and was profoundly emotionally affected by the whole experience. From that point onward, making the film was an obsession for him, not merely an excuse to dive down to the shipwreck.
So what you said was true at a particular point in time, but the Titanic story and the film Cameron was making would come to mean a whole lot more to him just a little bit later. It was a passion project for him like none before. Earlier, he never got it--he never let it in. ;) But like his character Brock Lovett (RIP Bill Paxton), Cameron eventually got it and let it in.

Fun fact, well sad fact the couple depicted dying in bed together is supposed to be the founding creators of Macy's (the clothing store). The first Macy's store has a memorial mural dedicated to them and them passing on the Titanic is extremely depressing
In the deleted scenes we see more of them as Ida refuses to board a lifeboat.
After Titanic sank and there was the big media rush, when interviewed, Isidor and Ida Straus's family said that they weren't surprised that she would rather die with Isidor instead of live without him.

Guggenheim I think it was who came out in full top hat 🎩 and said they were going to die as gentlemen - that’s a story that was told soon after the sinking…. The musicians who played as the ship sunk, the priest who was doing chaplain duties as the ship sank…. The captain who died at the wheel..
Cameron paid EXTREME attention to detail where the ship itself is concerned…. Not sure if you’ve seen the movie “Everest” from 2015, but I remember after screening the real Beck Weathers saying “the mountain was the real star of the movie”…. I think of that whenever I see a documentary about the making of Titanic. It was the star whether one was paying attention to it or not
The scene that got cut out here but gutted me in 1997 and guts me now as a mom, was the scene where the Irish mother is tucking her kids into bed and telling about the Land of Tir Na Nog as the water comes…. Obviously nobody is able to verify that it happened, but as a mama I can see knowing you’re going to die (bc those bits about the lifeboats were true) and trying to provide what comfort she could to her children 😭
That old couple are the Strouses (sp) and they’re one of the sweeter stories of the Titanic. The wife, Ida, refused to leave her husband, Isidore, and chose not to board a lifeboat. She is quoted as saying they’ve been together for decades, have had children and grandchildren and have grown old together, and she didn’t want to survive the sinking if there was a chance she’d loose her husband. The couple chose to return to their room together. It’s very sweet.
She gave her spot to her servant or housemaid, and stayed with her husband.
Learned about this story as a kid and since then I feel proud having the name Isidor 😊 Was teased for being named Isidor since it's unusual here.

26:03 the reason he's ashamed and snuck on the lifeboat in the first place is because he's Bruce Ismay and Mr. Ismay was the chairman of the White Star Line that owned Titanic. He was the one that ordered more speed earlier in the movie and basically pressured Capitan Smith to ignore ice warnings. He can't watch the sinking because he wasn't man enough to go down with his own ship like Capitan Smith and realizing he's going to live with his guilt for the rest of his life having essentially caused this disaster himself.
And obviously, the families of those who died in the ship sued the hell out of White Star Line shortly after.

In a more historical context:
1. ismay didn't directly say to go faster, but he did like to boast that the ship was reaching such speeds, leading to the rumors that they'll be reaching New York Tues night than Wedns afternoon. The captain may have heard of the rumors, but did not get himself involved. It was just common thought and practice to go so fast at the time.
2. Ismay did apparently have people rushed into the lifeboats than just stay walking on the ship. The only reason he took a seat was because no one else took it, so he did. The reason we have the hate boner for ismay today is due to his rival partner in the company spreading false stories about him, as well as his actions after the sinking

Titanic facts:
I was obsessed with this ship growing up, long before the movie came out. I have a copy of the last menu from the last meal they all ate - not for morbid reasons, but ... you never know what your legacy looks like until its looked at through history, and because we never know what our last good moment might be.
The sheer number of sets they had, from mini-miniatures, to sections of full-size ship on pivot points so it could be sunk and raised again for each scene (built off the coast of Mexico) was ASTOUNDING. This was also pre-internet, so there's a LOT of footage in the DVD edition.
"And the Band Played On" is a phrase you might hear ... a result of the musicians who played until the very end. It's also a movie about the AIDS epidemic, and the people who fought to the bitter end of that battle, too.
Sadly, White Star Line (owner of the Titanic) tried to CHARGE the musicians for the uniforms they wore, since they were never returned. You thought the ice water was cold. Yeesh.
This ship, as horrifying as its end was, paved way for a LOT of the safety laws/rules ships have today. Just a few years later, 1916, the Brittanic (sister-ship to the Titanic) sank as well, but about 30 people died, but THOUSANDS were saved because of the regulations that had changed upon the sinking of the Titanic.
In 7th grade during English class, a short story of the Titanic in our textbook was part of our reading curriculum. It was one of the very few times I was excited to actually read a non-fiction story in school.

Im a huge history buff when it comes to anything titanic. Two fun facts about the drawing scene.
1. They actually filmed it on the first day of shooting because they wanted to get it out of the way before the more complex scenes but also because James Cameron wanted their first interactions to be organic for this scene aka awkward seeing someone naked for the first time barely knowing someone. Just imagine being naked in front of cast, crew, and production staff on day 1...
2. It was actually James Cameron's hands they showed drawing in this scene, not Leonardo DiCaprio's. James Cameron did the drawing himself and had his hands filmed while doing so so they had the clips to add to the scene but also James is left-handed, Jack is right-handed so James actually drew with his non dominant hand.
@wonholywife-woongi 1) True story. Both Cameron and DiCaprio have confirmed this, as well as Kate Winslet I remember now. The "portrait" scene was the first day/week of shooting. Hard to imagine that both DiCaprio and Winslet were not even 22 years of age when this scene was shot. It made sense to do it, because, it gave DiCaprio and Winslet the necessary time and space to get to know and used to each other. Knowing they had to continue working together for another 6.5 months to complete the filming of Titanic. Getting done with the most uncomfortable scene (e.g. Winslet having to go nude in front of DiCaprio) was the right way to break any ice and rid of any egos. DiCaprio further elaborated that scenes like these were also helpful in how he and Kate were able to develop a friendship as good as they would end up having, for pulling each other through difficult challenges, like the portrait scene, but also Jack's own death scene etc.
2) Yep, Cameron has made the admission of making an unaccredited cameo in the movie, when we all think we see DiCaprio's hand drawing Rose, but it is the 40-year old hand by Cameron instead. The moments we see Cameron drawing, were just sketchy and adding a bit of texture. For he led the real work over to his left hand.

Fun fact - the father who tried to save his son (23:10) is a Czech stuntman (I am from Czechia, so it’s interesting for me) and he wasn’t the only one stuntman from Czechia. They said that the scene, where they were falling from the breaking boat, which is about 12 seconds long, took 6 days to shoot, so applause for all stuntmen from this film.

Jack fully allowed those assholes to think he was some sort of sexual predator just so Rose wouldn’t have to tell them she tried to kill herself. Understandable why Rose wouldn’t want them to know, god knows what they would’ve done to her, but Jack is just a fucking saint dude. He saved her so many times. 1. Her suicide attempt. 2. Swept her off her feet and took her all around this ship to avoid her abusive home life. 3. Helped her survive the ship sinking. 4. And even after his death, she carried on his last name and was able to escape her abusive fiancé and family for good. A fiancé who during the sinking of the ship tried to shoot her because he was stupid enough to put his coat on her (when she already had jacks) that he had put the necklace in. 5. Jack encouraged her to live the full and free life that she lead after the sinking which is honestly probably the only reason she lived to be so old. Had she stayed in the life she wasn’t happy in, she probably would’ve died younger due to stress or she would’ve killed herself.
The actual violinist that led the band was Wallace Heartley. It's probably biased as another violinist but he's one of the bravest men to ever live. The song he plays is "nearer my god to the thee" such a beautiful hymn. To bring peace any way you could to desperate people while knowing you're time is over is absolutely beautiful and brave

Here's some facts regarding the lack of lifeboats. Back then, every ship didn't have enough for everyone onboard. Because there were so many ships sailing the oceans back then that if a ship was sinking, there was always one nearby to arrive in time to save everyone. The lifeboats weren't meant to get everyone of the sinking ship. They were meant to ferry people from the sinking ship to the rescue ship. It was to spare deck space. But this time things were different. This time not as many ships were crossing the Atlantic as usual. And the reason for that was because of a massive coal strike in Ireland, which caused a shortage in coal, preventing ships from setting out to sea. This was one of many factors that played into the Titanic's sinking.
James Cameron had done a test and actually discovered that if their had been more life boats and or more people in them later more people would have died because of the amount of time it took to load and lower each boat. So really the only way that more people could have been saved is if the boats had come back earlier for those in the water.
The Rise and Jack story was just for the movie. The Titanic sinking was more than just about a tragic shipwreck… it was about how the first, second and third class passengers were segregated to their own classes (decks / areas). Third class were primarily families of all nationalities - but were confined to the lower part of the ship through locked grilles. They had no chance after the ship hit the iceberg. The wiki is a good summary but still long.
The musicians knew they were going to die but played to try and bring some comfort until the end. No one knows for sure what they were playing last, but some have said it's the song portrayed in the movie, "Nearer My God To Thee".
Of the 109 children on the Titanic, 53 of them died. Almost all of them from the families in steerage. The old couple on the bed were Isidor Strauss and his wife Ida, the owners of Macy's.

There's a lot of theories about the plank Rose lays on. Its been busted on Mythbusters that only one person could balance on there as much as two could fit if it were on solid ground. This is due to buoyancy properties of the wood and salt water. Yes, if it were on dry land, it could fit both of them, but regardless how their weight were distributed on the plank, only one could balance properly and stable enough that all parts of their body were out of the water safely enough for both to survive. The one theory though is if they regularly switched places but the cold air mixed with consistently wet clothing would have the same effect none the less. Rose being somewhat lesser wet the longer she laid there, the warmer they eventually kept her so the switching on and off theory wouldnt really be plausible either.
People who yell about how they could both fit seem to forget they tried, but it started to tip when Jack was still partially on it. That’s why he balanced it and gave it to Rose instead.
Yeah, I always wondered if they could have kept switching especially since movement would keep them slightly warmer but you have a good point there. They did mention that they could have put Rose’s life jacket underneath but that would have been quite difficult to keep on there, especially in those conditions.
Cameron himself admitted that maybe he could have the door smaller but “Jack was gonna die regardless bc that’s what the script said”. Lol

Whats most important in a situation like that is keeping especially your chest above the water because its the blood pumping that keeps you warm and under dry circumstances in the sense of hypothermia, the lesser essential body parts go first- the fingers and toes. You can actually survive severe hypothermia if your body temp is slowly raised back to normal because the heart pumping slowly is still enough to keep the brain alive even if youre in a hypothermic coma. Usually in that case, docs would keep the brain asleep until the person was fully warmed again. Theres videos on cases too. But what killed those ppl faster was having their chests under the cold water as well because that forced the hypothermia to set in even faster
@@dustercat21 oh that’s really useful. Yeah he probably could have gone to look for another piece of debris, but that would mean leaving Rose. And the saddest part is, it’s not even illogical or just a movie plot. There are genuinely people who would make these kinds of sacrifices. He may have expected to die but he wanted to make sure that above all else, she survives.

@@Miyanoai14 well i mean, death was inevitable if you stayed in that water too long even half submerged considering it was in the 30s. Most of us wince when the showers too cold lol. But in the sense of the actual survivors of the distaster, i believe they were mostly or completely out of the water or clinging onto debris. If anything whistle man was among the last to die shortly before rose was rescued. Mostly she survived because was completely out of the water.

First of all, sir, you have an amazing smile and a great sense of humor.
Secondly, there is a lot they got exactly right in this movie. Jack and Rose are the fictional story arch, but the rest of it, right down to the set designs were on point. As to why the Titanic sank, there were a stunning amount of misfortunes that happened before she even left Belfast. Even the weather was not on their side. As the Titanic was sinking, there was a ship much much closer to them than anyone knew. The SS Californian could have been there soon enough to save almost everyone on board, but the radio operator had gone to bed after sending the initial report to all ships in the area about the icebergs and the ship having been stopped for the night. To make things worse, the Titanic had been having radio/telegraph issues since they left port for the maiden voyage. As if all that weren't bad enough, there was an actual weather anomaly that created something like a polar mirage so that when the SS Californian saw the flairs, they didn't actually know what they were seeing because it looked strange. Only in the aftermath did they realize what they had witnessed.
Can you imagine being the crew of the SS Californian? Finding out after the fact that you were so close but didn't/couldn't help? PTSD, anyone?
Wow. And also, wasn't there a guy, maybe one of the staff on the Titanic, who really wanted to make it to their destination sooner than was wise? I seem to remember he sort of bragged the ship didn't need any more lifeboats than they had and he insisted the ship sailed faster, maybe faster than it should have, to make it to their destination ( I forget where that was, and I don't think this person was the captain, it was someone else). I read it was this person's arrogance that was a big factor in why the ship got into the trouble it did. I read he was heavily criticized later when the survivors got to safety.
But having said all of that, yes, I definitely wish the SS Californian had seen the distress signals. It's such a shame the radio operator went to sleep so soon.

I think he was someone who had decided about not putting more life jackets on the boat or something. Whatever it was he was in charge of, if he had done a better job of it, I think more people could have been saved.

1. Uncontrolled fires in the boiler rooms before she set sail caused the metal hull to become really brittle.
2. The expenses of building the Titanic exceeded projections, so they started cutting costs by using cheaper materials, and getting rid of lifeboats.
3. They lost the key to the binocular cabinet and refused to break the cabinet open because it was the maiden voyage.
Those are just a few of the highlights.

The single most enraging thing about this movie is the simple fact that if Rose had stayed in the life boat, Jack would have had the door all to himself and would have survived.
Welll, who says Jack would have *found* the wooden panel then to begin with, because, there are so many variables?
One must also *not* forget though, that on P.147 in the script (that Cameron wrote) it says: _'Jack Dies!'_ ... and Jack does what the *script* says. Meaning, you like many others, including me, have a disagreement with the script. Which is fine and good to have e.g. a creative disagreement.

Far too much happens between Rose jumping off the life boat and them finding the wooden panel, and far too much could've happened if Rose stayed on the boat and Jack had been left alone on the ship, especially with Cal and Lovejoy knowing where he is. It's not like this wooden panel has a will of its own, just waiting for Jack and only Jack to claim it lol. It was a complete coincidence that a) Jack and Rose found it, and more importantly b) that it wasn't already occupied by someone else. There were so many people in that water, many of them close by to the panel. The fact that no one else had got on it before Jack and Rose showed up always felt a bit unbelievable to me, but for the sake of the movie I am of course willing to disregard that haha.

There were two big turns of events that had a huge impact on the survival of Rose & Jack: 1) the gun chase by Cal, that left both Rose & Jack without a lifeboat to escape; 2) encountering Thomas Andrews in the smoking room and him giving Rose his lifejacket.
Both instances were of crucial importance in whether who was gonna make it. Take as example, there is *no* doubt in my mind that Rose would have been dead if she did not had her lifejacket on when Titanic was sinking. She was not a good swimmer and the suction from the ship would have likely drowned her. Otherwise, the lifejacket also kept her warm and made it possible to survive as long as she did before she got rescued.
@@tocraneandcrane Rose was lucky that Jack was an excellent swimmer. Thus, that he was able to drag her from the center of the ensuing chaos after the sinking and pull her to safety towards the wooden panel. A wooden panel that Jack spotted by accident.
Remember how 3rd Officer Wilde (the one with the whistle) who was laying nearby Rose & Jack in the water on this promenade deck chair. One can imagine that he was a good swimmer and could have laid himself on the wooden panel earlier than Rose & Jack. Which would have meant that they would have had to search for something else that was floating.
I guess that is why Cameron's Titanic is and remains a movie. In part of Rose & Jack being 100% fictional (although partially inspired by real people e.g. Beatrice Wood) and the way the circumstances in the movie came to unfold being purely on the basis of a script in combination with a bit of female and male logic, reasoning and common sense. That includes, Rose jumping back on the ship and Jack deciding not to get on the wooden panel. Due to the fact that any reasonable person, like Jack, would have known the wooden panel would have saved his life.

Most millennials didn’t even know about the Titanic until this movie came out.
Yes, it was definitely a big deal to be on the Titanic, the newest, grandest, most luxurious ship in the world, and billed to be unsinkable. Also, yes, they were moving. Rose, her mother, and Cal were all moving from London back to America. In those days, richy rich people would live out of the country doing "the grand tour" of European countries for a year or so before settling down to marry. It was a way of meeting other rich aristocrats and/or titled but poor nobles looking to marry rich Americans (like Winston Churchill's father; Winston's mom was an American heiress).
We went to the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and I pretty much cried through the whole experience. The class system was real and it still is to this day when most of us live in the real world. If you ever get the chance to visit one of the museums, I highly recommend it.
At the end when Jack was at clock waiting for Rose the time was set when the titanic sunk
I was eight years old when I saw this in theaters when it came out. I still vividly remember how pack the theater was with viewers, I realized how much of a big deal this movie was. It was hard for me to stay awake because it was such a long film, I was scared I would be left behind in the theater.

She didn't earn the nickname because she "survived". She was given the "unsinkable" title because of her personality - she was a strong and fearless leader in a time of darkness and uncertainty.
Wait, I believe they called her unsinkable Molly Brown because she also survived another ship/vessel sinking.
Also, the reason Jack wasn't on the wood panel with Rose is because there was no way for him to get on that would not have unbalanced it and made it flip over, and even if he had, it would have sunk into the water with the two of them on top of it. It would have kept them afloat so they were not having to swim/tread water, but they still would have been below the water line and therefore they would have both frozen.
The Mythbusters tested this out in one of their movie myth episodes and they determined through their experiments that the only way to keep that wooden panel above the waterline under the combined weight of Rose and Jack is if they had tied Rose's vest under the door to help keep it buoyant. But that was the conclusion of two men who are highly educated who went into the experiment armed with a lot of scientific facts regarding water density, the buoyancy of white oak, and who were dressed in waterproof suits that kept the cold waters of San Francisco Bay from freezing them into a state of senselessness. Rose and Jack were already soaked through (how she came out of the experience with all her fingers and toes is incredible) and breathless from fighting the undertow of the ship sinking beneath them. Additionally, neither of them has the scientific education to think on their feet that way.

I like to think that Jack and Rose were both virgins who gave themselves to each other. Sometimes you just know when it's right. Rose definitely wasn't giving anything to "Cal" which is why he was trying to bribe her with the necklace. This movie was incredible! The clothing, the music, the decor of the ship etc. It was all impeccable!!

Lately I've been on a Titanic phase watching documentaries, seeing what flaws on what lead up to that tragedy (So many that I can't explain in one sentience.) the survivors etc. This movie gets almost everything right (except the love story didn't happen.) But I really like the movie and am really interested and sad about the real thing.

The real Titanic was built in my city of Belfast, Northern Ireland, a country in the UK. I walk past the cranes that built the Titanic everyday on the way to work. It's really personal for everyone in N.I because our grandfathers and great grandfathers built it. My grandad showed me old photos of my great grandad building it and showed me letters he wrote to my granda about what they were working on. My grandad broke his leg the day before, he would've been on that boat if he didn't break his leg the night before. Terrifying

The real reason Captain Smith stayed on the ship when it was sinking was that he felt responsible for the death of everyone on board the Titanic that he went down with the ship instead of going back and facing prison for what he had done to the lives that perished on the Titanic.

There is a rule for seamen - the captain is always the last one to leave the ship.
If you consider EVERYTHING that happened that led up to the sinking, he wasn't... But they didn't know then what we know now. For instance, there was a fire in the boiler room before she left the harbour, and it weakened the hull right where the iceberg struck. Captain Smith had no control over that and was probably never even told about it when he boarded the ship. WSL was in debt, so the liner had to leave on time with its passengers and couldn't afford to be delayed for any repairs. This was strictly the fault of WSL executives.

Officer Murdoch was really done dirty in the movie. There's no evidence that he shot anybody and definitely no evidence that he killed himself. It's actually believed that he died being swept off the deck, trying to properly load one of the last two lifeboats. James Cameron has even said that if he could go back and change one thing about the movie, it would be that.
It is speculated that it might have been Chief Officer Wilde not Murdoch.
And Murdoch was in such a good state of mind to try to get as many people in the boats as possible not just women and children first.
Yes, and even so when I watched the movie - I always felt Murdoch was a hero.
That scene was in the movie because, at the time, it was believed to be what happened. It wasn't until afterward that the other theory came out. There's speculation that a surviving officer claimed it was Murdoch, but he was mistaken and it was another officer instead.

Original comment: The part that gets me the most is how preventable this tragedy was irl. They could've had more lifeboats, and they could have made sure each was filled to capacity (in the actual sinking of the Titanic there was so much panic and no practice drills, resulting in lifeboats becoming disorganized and only getting filled to half capacity). And the lifeboats could have returned to look for survivors sooner, and maybe it would have made a difference. When the Titanic telegraphed the SOS, there were ships closer than the Carpathia that could have saved hundreds from freezing by arriving far sooner, but they had nobody watching the telegraph. Other ships even saw the emergency flares in the distance, and ignored them. The California was less than an hour away, they could have rendered aid before hundreds froze to death in the water. They did nothing, and the much smaller Carpathia was four hours away and by the time they arrived it was too late to save anyone still in the water. I'm not entirely sure if the Titanic was being as careless irl as the movie, as in going too fast, but the ship was in iceberg waters and the Titanic didn't change her pace for the environment.
All those lives that were lost, all the men, women, children and pets, should have lived except for these easily corrected mistakes. They didn't have to die. Seeing your reaction, how this movie shows us this tragedy and how crushing the real Titanic's sinking had to be, was easily my favorite part of the video. This movie could have been more about romance and horror, but I like that they went with sorrow, and show us we should not waste our lives, instead, we must make it worthwhile. More lifeboats wouldn't have saved more. It was a miracle they even managed 18 of the 20. Historic Travels here on YT has a video about it.
On top of that they were lucky they even had a radio. It broke on a Saturday and they worked all night to get it working till Sunday. They had an emergency radio but it only went as far as 50 miles. It's a good thing they DID fix the radio.
As for survivors, you got 1500 panicking people who would flip the lifeboats, killing more.
Titanic wasn't actually going at full speed. The last boilers weren't lit. And as for the ice berg, the reason they couldn't see it was a mirage effect, no moon so they wouldn't have seen it until they only had 30 seconds to turn and avoid a collision.

@@sunfurycommenting1013 Another inaccuracy: The californian (not california) was around one third the size of carpathia, and carpathia was much smaller than titanic. Californian was also about 2 hours away actually, she might have made it in time to see the final plunge.
the biggest mistake the crew made was trying to avoid the iceberg. if they hit it directly the ship wouldnt have sank. the olympic titanics older sister ship hit the hms hawke. the damage was massive but the ship was able to sail back to liverpool for repairs. if the titanic had hit the iceberg directly it would have made it to new york.

They had no idea that they would graze the iceberg by the side and that would be far worse than hitting it dead on! Hindsight and all that jazz! It's kind of a reflex, to be honest. If you're driving a car and someone jumps in front of you, you're going to instinctively try to avoid them! Plus the Olympic was hit on her side by the Hawke, but the hole was above the water level, so it didn't sink. It was the Hawke that hit the Olympic head on and her bow was entirely destroyed, but she didn't sink either.
James Cameron (director) is the one who drew Kate Winslet. And as far as the lifeboat issue.... Back at the time of titanic lifeboats weren't meant to fully evacuate a ship. They were used to fairy passengers from a sinking ship to a rescue ship until all the passengers made it to the rescue ship. Then after titanic sank is when they started to make sure there were enough boats to accommodate everyone aboard a ship.

Women weren't usually encouraged to learn complicated mathematics, especially upper class women. He was impressed that she could do it in her head, and so quickly. She was raised to be a trophy wife for a wealthy man, like most women her age and social status.
I rented this movie so many times, that my parents finally bought if for my 21st birthday. I don't know why, but it's one of my favorite movies of all time, and I can rewatch it every time and still get all the feels. Especially at the end, where Rose reunites with Jack.

I'm 43. This movie hit theaters in November 1997 and came out to Blockbuster Video on midnight Sept 1, 1998. My birthday. I'll never forget how long the line was to get in the store for a simple VHS copy. It was like an event.
“Simple VHS copy” was two tapes. Would not all fit on one tape cartridge. Very pretty box art.
A detail I always think about now that I have a doggy….. There were at least 12 dogs that boarded with their owners. The film shows a couple only in the beginning. But only 3 dogs survived, because they were small and easily managed. Nine of the dogs went into the ocean. I think of how terrified and helpless they must’ve been and I get super sad, and it wasn’t even depicted in the film.
A deleted scene includes a few dogs running across a deck during the sinking, and Cal seeing them and looking confused. Just got cut for time unfortunately.

You have thousands of people in the middle of the night, in the middle of the freezing ocean, about to potentially drown in a matter of hours. Not enough lifeboats by more than half, and people panicking. Then, I imagine you have some people who understand what it means and "do the right thing" in their final moments, mixed in with plenty of people who -- when faced with their own mortality -- act out of desperation, survival instincts etc. Then, imagine all those people running into each other, conflicting actions, moralities. Add on top of all that this idea of class between peoples, their ignorances and entitlements, both upper and lower class. All of this is, of course, irrelevant when you're about to die. Suddenly you have clarity (or not), and all of that internal struggle plays out in a confined space. Oh, and finally, the gradual decay and destruction of the integrity of the Titanic all happening at the same time.
This was a historic tragedy up there with the worst of them. May we never take life, our knowledge, or our own sense of invincibility for granted.

What? As I recall it hit the ice at 11:40 at night and sank at 2 o'clock. That's too long to fit the movie.
From what I understand, the entire movie is the same length of time as it took Titanic to sink. I could be wrong, though.

True fact the couple on the bed is the male is the founder Macy’s. Him and his wife they wouldn’t let him go on the lifeboat with her. So they made a choice to let every woman and child to go in front of them. So they died together when the ship sank. Now that was something that I didn’t even know till I watched something about the passengers of the titanic. Just hearing that about that couple made me cry.
