- Taking a break from the Disney retrospective, we're looking at some animatronics meant to entertain kids that ended up being...well, still entertaining, but not quite in the way that was intended.
Oddly enough, as I was finishing this video up, user CECShowtapeArchive posted some footage of the "Family Album" Band! What a coincidence!

Thank you for including my photos and video of the Family Album. I indeed voiced the characters in Danvers Massachusetts. The video you see here, is an arcive of the show, and the voices were all done my me. The only reason the dialog isnt interesting, is it was shot between midnight and 3 am. When there were live people to talk to, it was so much more interesting. The show is totally interactive, and I am a professional puppeteer, and love improv! This show was very popular at our store, and people couldnt understand how robots could see and interact with them!!

I’ve been there and it’s actually really cool, but at the end of the ride, one of his friends say “goodbye, *your name*.” And it’s kinda unsettling because they say your name out of nowhere and I don’t remember them (the people running the ride) asking my name.
They do ask your name. I very vividly remember riding the California version when I was 10 and I said my name was Pablo. I thought it was hilarious hearing ET say Paaaablo.

i LOVE the way these guys make my skin crawl... a perfect combination of harmless intentions and terrifying uncanniness, combined with the harsh lighting... gosh.
also, uncle clunk's story is such a sad one... so much potential! the theme song actually made me laugh! but animatronics tend to have sad endings to their stories... the appreciation of their engineering is so lacking. :(

I'm fascinated by animatronics, especially the 'scary' ones, so this makes me so happy/excited. And I laughed at "so it's time to do a countdown of some scary robots!!!" in a cheerful voice. Love it.

Great video!! Thank you for including an actual history on Uncle Klunk. He's one of my favorite characters ever (I have one in my bedroom, right behind me as I'm typing this) and the Jeff Howell showtapes is what made me fall in love with him. I love love LOVE Jeff's voice and goofy personality so much, and Showbiz just totally ruined Klunk. Glad more people are starting to realize that Klunk is more than just a goofy knockoff voiced literal abomination.

Animatronics don't bother me too much, but animatronics submerged in water terrify me. I know there is a fear of underwater manmade objects but they aren't to bothering to me. But underwater animatronics or figures kill me
If it just submerged animatronics, I think it may be a Mild form of Submechaniphobia. In that case I suggest you stay away from pictures of the Bunyip animatronics and the 2000 Leagues Under The Sea's Sea Serpent pictures.

I had a problem with our first Disney trip because a lot of the animatronics were on ground but around water. I am terrified of all animatronics really but it freaks me out 100x more if they're near or in water.
The family album was done live. if you look at the video during the holiday season in Warwick Rhode Island. The show is done manually between the song portions while the songs are pre-programmed.

YES! I GREW UP IN RHODE ISLAND and Family Album at the Warwick location were the BEST. The guy who voiced the main character in the in between segments was great, he had birthday kids come up and sang to them, he riffed with the audience, and even heckled people who weren't paying attention to the band! My first intro to animatronics, and I was disappointed that later animatronic entertainers weren't at all personal.

I went on the E.T. ride at Universal and this little girl next to me was crying. She was terrified of all the aliens. They were amazing but defiantly

i'm scared of ET, i've been scared of it my whole life. when i was a kid i had nightmares about it coming into my bedroom at night and murdering me in my sleep. but i'm gonna be honest i find the animatronics other than the ETs on the ride to be kind of cute [the old man mushroom thing is pretty cute to me!]
I get creeped out by human animatronics more than the animal ones. Don’t get me wrong, both kinds can be creepy. But Uncle Klunk just creeps me out for some reason

I absolutely love animatronics, I never find them creepy, not to mention Fnaf, but as a Fnaf fan, even before the game has been a thing, I always loved the rockafire, CEC, vintage stuff like that, I wish people wouldn't compare them to Fnaf, I still loved this video, I love to hear what people think, I can see why people fear something that's so life like but not, nice video though!

I think I might know why people are more scared about animatronics in real life then animatronics in video games, because in video games they can’t do anything except give you a jump, but in real life you never know if an animatronic has wondered of after you kicked it in the knee, and now is searching for you in your bedroom closet waiting to strike and “kick” your “knee”.
But when you realize they can’t physically move without the air pressure, and don’t have brains, they aren’t scary at all

Love the video and certainly look forward to the final countdown. As a kid, I remember Showbiz and even more so The Rockafire Explosion very well. ALWAYS loved it, however I do admit that I was alway a bit fascinated by Fatz Geronimo, likely because he was kind of intimidating. Those were the days! Thanks for the memories, Colin. Creepy as some might be.

Fun fact: in notorious mass shooter Eliott Rogers' autobiography, he mentions riding the E.T animatronic ride at a very young age and being freaked out by the aliens.

I have fond memories of the Family Album (#8). I spent many birthday parties in the mid-80s watching them at the Danvers, MA Chuck E Cheese. The dialog in-between songs was live. They always invited the birthday boy/girl up the front to sing them Happy Birthday. They also took requests from the kids. I remember Thriller being a popular request, so I'm guessing this had to be 1984-1985. I also remember they often had to "warm-up" before playing some songs and played a pseudo-version of the song they were going to play but with just humming, not quite sure why.

Actually, I remember as a kid these animatronics being much more detailed and realistic (almost Disney quality). I guess that’s what happens when looking thru the lens of a child.
I was the head performer for Danvers Family Album! Thank you for the compliment! I still dream I perform theis show, It ment so, so much to me. I actually figured out how to perform, and sone thru the show (something I now know could of gotten us into so, so much trouble! ) But I still love the show and miss it so much, I performed between 1985 and 1987. When the show was replaced my the Rocker stage. I have an entire photo album of shots from this show
I got into animatronics through the obvious means.. The games.. But it's videos like this that give me a genuine appreciation for these complex mechanisms and how they function. So thank you for this. Also your voice is really calming.

The portrait boxes are my favorite due to how unique I find them. The general idea is that a full body animatronic creates something more lifelike and seems more 'advanced' but the portrait boxes felt more animated and just more fun in how it creates an actual living picture.
I have two things to touch on from this video, and I mean no disrespect as these are just my opinions. Firstly, Pasquale is definitely the creepiest character in MMBB. Your assessment of a human feeling out of place is 100% accurate and he feels unwelcome. His portrait model is the worst by far because of his unfinished looking face, his eyelids looking like old socks that were kinda just thrown out, and his pizza cutter being sharp and looking like a weapon. Absolutely nothing to protest here. What I would protest is Uncle Klunk who I have a soft spot for. I don’t really know why. I never knew the story of his acting being replaced by corporate, I like all the tapes the same. I think the corny jokes fit the character. Dare I say he feels like Pasquale done right, but without the chef part. The music was good when he was given a chance at it and his design was never off putting to me, I love his design. It looks warm and inviting like someone you’d actually want to know, for me at least. I wish he got more development and love.

Where I live there wasn't and isn't a single restaurant, franchise or amusement park that used animatronic except Chucky Cheese. When I saw movies like Goofy Movie, I thought it was trying to mock only the Chuckys animatronics, but, in reality, it was parodying this type of entertainment.
Its interesting to see how you see these machines as characters. I never did, but hearing your narration about the history of these guys and how they interacted with the public really makes me rethink the value of this animatronics as a way to bring life to these characters.

In the chuck e cheese from where I grew up, the animatronics would only move around and perform whenever there was a birthday party going on (which was surprisingly not often) so whenever I went, they would just stand there, completely still and completely lifeless. One day, I actually gathered up the nerve to walk up to them, I immediately regretted it because that was when I really got a grasp of just how big they were. They towered over my seven-year-old 4’6 self, so I ran back into the smelly tunnels where I felt safe.
I'm glad I had the opportunity to experience chuck e cheese when they still had creepy animatronics. I remember peeping behind the curtain and seeing his eyes rolled back and lifeless

I went on the E.T ride when I was 4, and I loved it. I didn’t find E.T or any other characters creepy at all. I was also in the front, with a small E.T animatronic in a basket in front of me on the bike-like ride. The only part I got scared at all was when the car came at me. I just got startled, not really “scared,” though.
When I was 6 years old, fnaf creeped me out. It made me afraid of chucky cheese and I hated going there. After a while I got used to chucky cheese but still hated animatronics. And I still do. 🙊😱

I've only been too one Chuckies with the full band in Michigan, I was around 7 or 8 but I was so happy to see it as a fan of fnaf. I was with my cousin's too but they seem to have not cared.
