    I use 25 gr. of powder + 10gr. Cream of Wheat to bring the ball just below the chamber. I very lightly chamfered the chambers & forcing cone to take off the sharp edges using a countersink bit by hand. I then squared-off the rounded top of the Remmy site with a file & back cut a very small notch in the rear of the sight to create some shadow (like a patridge sight). These mods brought my groups to point of aim at 15 yards with 2.5" groups with my wrist resting on a sandbag. I learned these mods from Blackoracle69 and damned if they didn't work better than I ever imagined. I have read that it is very important to have the ball up to the chamber mouth, hence the Cream of Wheat. Thirty grain charges of powder open up my groups to 3-4 inches.
    I have gotten tons of information from channels like yours. Please keep em' coming!

    I originally wanted to get the Remington new model army 1858 revolver.... but I instead got a colt 1851 navy made by pietta and it’s been a good shoot....and this past thanksgiving I was able to hit a metal target with the navy at about 35-40 yards about three times..... but overall both guns are great firearms👍

    I have to say your groups indicate that it's you the shooter ... you'r shots are spread out level and fairly accurate in height..... try a holder abs remote trigger release and I'll bet you see huge improvement

    My Navy Arms 1858 has one cylinder that produces constant fliers. I found it and notched it. That is always my empty cylinder now.
    Have you ever checked to see if you have this happening with your revolvers?
    Just found your site and subscribed to it.
    I enjoy your videos.
    Thanks for posting them.

      The chambers on this gun are all undersized. I'm going to have it converted sometime in the future. Glad to have you aboard!

    35 grains won't hurt. Try it. FWIW, Yours may be spot on, but I have found that my volume powder measure is off by 5 grains short of what it's marked using Goex 3fg. As you know, only real BP can be weighed, and all substitutes must be measured by volume only. Edit: 35 grains may be what it needs to get proper obturation as your bullet enters the forcing cone and into the rifling.

    Have you tried a bigger ball? Ubertis seem to like them and your string of shots suggests a tighter fit is needed. Love all your videos. Please keep them coming. Thank you.

      The chambers on this gun are not bored properly, they're too small.

    Kind of like we figured before ain't it. Morgan and Quantrill were guirella fighters so it stands to reason theyd be shooting up close and from horseback

    Stock or aftermarket nipples? Which caps are you using? I have the same revolver with factory nipples and the Remington #11s are too big and I don't want to have to pinch all of them since I have a PolishCapper and CCI #10s are too small and need a second hit from the hammer half of the time even when seated with a wooden dowel.

      Use Remington #10s not 11s you'll find they won't fall off and do a great job

    So, which one is more accurate, Pietta 1858 or Uberti 1858? I know each is it's own story but your thoughts would be appreciated.

    Try backing the charge down. Sounds odd as hell, but I backed mine down to 21 with 30 grains of filler and she's hitting 2 moa at 40 in 5 short groups off a rest.

    There could be a book written on tuning these in. Honing your cylinder past the .457 ball size so it grabs the rifling. Judging by the roundness of his front blade he hasn't done a whole lor of research on sighting them in. I can hit a walnut at 15 yards but I've got a lot of work into mine.

    Some things to think about: I have an Uberti just like that. First of all you should figure out what diameter bullet will be the correct for your gun. Mine is a .457, which gets tight in the cilinder living a small lead circle in the process. Other thing, the powder charge. In my case 15 grains, compressed with the same amount of semolina. Finally, get good old berilium chimneys. I am positive you will get better results if you take attention to these details. Seems to me your bullets are not stabilizing correctly which explains the huge diferences you see when you shoot at greater distances.

    17 to 20 grains would be better. I can shoot at 43 yards & have a 4 inch group with my Remington 1858

    This kind of puzzles me as my Pietta Remington shoots to point of aim with a round ball at the longer range(s) unlike any Colt's reproduction I have ever owned and shot. the Colt's tend to shoot low and to the left from a rest....

    • @DukeFrazierProductions
      @DukeFrazierProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ran a bore cam down the barrel and the cylinders are not sized properly. The bullet doesn't fully engage the rifling when its in the barrel.

      Sometimes I think the manufacturers intentionally understate the best/most accurate size ball or conical for their BP revolvers. I don't have the means nowadays to test them myself, but I wonder if a .455 or .456 ball or conical would work in the Italian reproductions. Many years ago I owned a Belgian produced 1860 Colt's as well as a 1858 Remington reproduction (don't ask me what company in Belgium made them as I don't recall) and was able to slug the barrels back then. As I recall BOTH came in at .458 and would throw .454 and .455 balls and the rare (back then they were hard to damn near impossible to find and I didn't know squat about them to be honest) conical bullets all over a man sized target. It was that sort of thing (lack of accuracy) that caused me to drift away from BP firearms/shooting for a number of years until a friend got me back into it. Now I'm addicted again.....And you have been NO help breaking said addiction. I failed to mention how much I enjoy your videos and hope that you will continue to produce the quality videos I/we have come to appreciate!

    How can you swear to a gun's accuracy when hand holding and shot by eye sight. would not accuracy test be best done with the gun in a fixed mount sighted by laser. Just wondering...

  • @garyshaffer68
    @garyshaffer68 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try shooting off sand bags. Mine shoots 3 inch groups at 30 yards. 30 grain of fff
    And a 454 ball no wad and Crisco over the ball. Pulling to the left is jurking the trigger. Number 10 caps cci. On the 36 navey 375 ball 20 grains of fff. Sand bags will make all the difference. 😁

    • @DukeFrazierProductions
      @DukeFrazierProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will have to give that a try next time. This gun does have a serious issue with the chamber size and alignment. Not enough to make it dangerous but enough to greatly affect accuracy.

    I'd bet you'd do better off hand at those ranges.. Even if you used a modern two handed grip.... That last group was great.

    I owned a 1858 Remington in 44 , the accuracy was ok. By contrast my 1862 Colt and 1861 are by far more accurate and the 1858 was sold off.

    • @DukeFrazierProductions

      The chambers on my Remington are undersized. The ball doesn't fully engage the rifling once it enters the barrel. My 3rd Model Dragoon has the same issue. I'm thinking about converting them to .45 Colt.

      Mine is a Pietta, I’ve been loading 37grns by volume, could go more but that load shoots good for me. Also I want enough room to put a wax wad on top because mine stays loaded for long periods

      No its the gun. Its been checked, the chambers don't line up and 3 of them are undersized.

  • @cvcoco
    @cvcoco ปีที่แล้ว

    At first glance it looks like a shooter problem. Manual calls for .454 and 19gr. Some people use .457 in the hopes of grabbing more rifling while others use .451 for ease of loading. Duelist1954 hits dead-on with his 1858s and others so it can be done. If you have a chamber problem, send it to Uberti.

  • @larrabeejl
    @larrabeejl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The gun is accurate it's the shooter that's the problem. Remember it's a pistol not a rifle. Anything beyond 25 yards is way to far for a pistol new or old with iron sights.
