WAYNE HACKETT, was at his funeral. Choked me up that he got a mention. I had his face on a badge that I wore all weekend on my chest, along with SIMON OMEALLY. 2 very important prolific dancers that had unique styles and will never be copied. They played Curtis Mayfield Move on up which if anyone knew Wayne, was his signature tune. They played it in the Spanish hall/Mr Ms. I took Wayne to the floor with me, Simon too. My soul brothers, may they dance in soul heaven forever. ❤
Wigan Casino. Too young to have gone (born in 65) but would have loved to have been a part and play that video, often. "The Night" is my absolute favourite.
Loved the lady in red great sense of humour plus the ladies dancing ,they all have great personalities who were interviewed ,great to see so many happy faces on people enjoying themselves xx
What a wonderful clip, Great to see Chris" Gideon and Sandy, My true Soul family, Must also remember the 1000mph Keb Darge, I was there back in 1979 to the end, And yes" as our Top Soul Dj Richard Searling Mentioned" we must remember all those Djs and Soul fans that now are sadly no longer with us, 🙏God Bless them all🙏Long may it continue, Keep-The-Faith, ✊PATCH✊
@bobbytreetop.......Totally agree! I absolutely hate all these hypocritical 'bandwagon-jumpers' [Pete Waterman is probably the worst - seems to be in every single NS video ever made!] and all claiming to have 'been to Wigan'. NS was at its peak in 1973 with the Golden Torch in Stoke [the best all-nighter I ever went to and pissed all over Wigan], Catacombs Wolverhampton and Blackpool Mecca. In fact, NS was essentially 'dead' by 1976 has most of the original crowd had left the 'scene' and moved on. That was largely down to Wigan Casino - which turned NS from being an 'underground' youth culture into a mass market attraction. Every man and his dog seemed to be going just to see what all the fuss was about. I first went to Wigan on 30 September 1973 [didn't go the opening night as we heard the police were going to raid it] and the first year or so, it was good. But the longer it went on, the sillier it became. The last time I ever went to Wigan was in 1977 - when Granada TV filmed there for their 'This England' documentary serious. It was absolutely horrible, and I never ever went back again.
Great times, I was so lucky to have been the right age to experience Wigan Casino..... It's true what they say, it never leaves you. Once underskirt, your hooked for life ❤
Wigan Casino was famous for opening its doors to the TV cameras and the World, To what was a thriving underground scene. Now look at the state of it ..... It's the modern-day equivalent of going out to the Bingo .....
Bang on the money I still DJ only now and again with original records and only go out too the odd current up front venues that sadly are in decline so still have to travel, and there lies the difference no going to local run down social club that your want to be dj now plays at with his eBay £10 copy of a 5k record then goes does same at his mates carbon copy do ! No need to travel they are happy ruining said records by playing the fakes until their all sick of hearing them and don’t go even to their local boot leg club anymore , it’s fast becoming piss take full of folks dressed like clowns wearing badges that never went anywhere and have no history , nothing wrong with liking the music and wanting to dance and be part of it but please try understand a bit about it all it’s development and don’t think wearing silly clothes makes you a N Soul person as it doesn’t , don’t bother with attacking me with abuse as I never read any replies ,
@Keepingthefaith72.......Spot on!! Although it wasn't bad the first year or so - Wigan destroyed Northern Soul. [I was actually there in 1977 when Wigan allowed Granada TV to film for its 'This is England' documentary series. Absolutely horrific night and I never ever went back!]
@@thesoultwins72I Totally agree, Wigan started off great. But then started playing pop songs, Things like PJ Proby, Gary Pucket, Susan Maughan, Police Story, Theme from a colored man .. plus many more .....

Like a few in here I was there from the start at Wigan and I am a wigan lad , all I ask is please don’t think we all dress like clowns as some seem to do these days and most of those never set foot in Wigan as we don’t dress like that they don’t represent me or my friends cringeworthy is what it’s turning in to
@Genghis-Khan......Absolutely agree. I was also there from the start [didn't go the opening night - 23 September 1973 - as we all heard the police were going to raid it] So my first Casino all-nighter was 30 September 1973. I was also there in 1977 when Wigan opened its doors to Granada TV and allowed them to film for their documentary series 'This England'. It was horrible, and I never ever went back. IMHO - Wigan killed NS that night.
Me n my sis were too young 15 and 16 i n 1979 we loved the Northern soul stint at the Nevada in Bolton on a Saturday night but never were old enough for the all nighters! Massive drug scene too watch Soul Boy and Northern Soul films excellent

Yeah bet you don't know how much that hurts nowt wrong wi Blackpool but its Wigan you are talking about and what a fecking mess you have made of it its no wonder folk dont visit I mean first you knock down the old market hall and build that horrible construction which was never filled with shops people could afford to shop at then you build where the casino was and still useless when is it time you Wigan people wake up and fight for your town. The old market hall is still going strong in Boston and Yorkshire. I am a Wiganer myself but haven't lived there for years but still go back
Sad a load of old fogies trying to live there youth i used to go to Wigan casino then changed into jazz funk highland room Blackpool mecca..I have moved on no good living the past it was amazing times they look ridiculous BBC is not fit to associate its name with Wigan casino....
You sound very bitter. I have no doubt you’re criticizing while sitting on your lonely couch. PS I went to all the venues back in the seventies, and I’m back on the scene after 38 year hiatus. Yes, we’re all older and perhaps one or two are not quite up to speed with the music, but anything goes on the NS circuit-just like it did back in the day. PPS. Be the sunshine, and not the rain!
An early start to an outstanding magical Wigan Casino 50th Anniversary weekender. How lucky was I to be there in the mid to late 70s as a northern soulie crazed teenager... 👊 50 yrs on celebrating with 4000 wonderful soulies. Now thats KTF 👊👊👊👍🩷🩷 xxx
Great to see people still enjoying the music and dancing 50 years on! KTF 🇨🇦✊
Fantastic video, what a star Chris is all these years later, how good it would be to hear more of her stories of the Wigan Casino.
Best days of my life ❤

Gideon still looks fantastic today! Missed out in getting tickets for this!
The BBC and Radio 1 who wouldn’t touch Soul / N Soul music for decades and now they can’t get enough of it . The hypocrisy is nauseating .
Put perfectly pal. Culture Vulture Central

I’m surprised the BBC didn’t call it “the INFAMOUS “ Wigan Casino.
BRILLIANT ❤
