To those who commented about how 'tragic' John was, let me just say that I was fortunate to play with him, and befriend him. I spent more time laughing with John than almost anyone I can think of. He loved life, and lived it to the max, both the sorrowful and the joyous. I guarunfuckingtee you he didn't think of himself as tragic, but very fortunate, as indeed he was. Delighted to see over a million views of this gorgeousness.

I was a little too young to appreciate John Martyn when he was alive, but his music is the soundtrack to my childhood. My Dad played him at any oppurtunity; after an argument, travelling in the car with the sunset, late at night when the room was all smoky, sung to my Mum as a joke, but with so much love. All these little memories I cherish and for that, John is the greatest singer and songwriter there ever lived. His music makes me feel, and this song never ceases to make me cry. Thankyou. X

At the age of ~13 my new then step father switched me on to John Martyn I am now 52 and still attempting to master the guitar, I have resigned myself to the fact its never going to happen but it brings me joy, both my step father (JC) and JM were true masters and I am eternally grateful.

Looked up "John Martyn 1978" because that's when I saw him first live - Southampton Civic Centre Nov 12th '78 - and he really was that good!! Just a fantastic musician, story-teller, entertainer. RIP John.

John never sold out for record sales. He just played his "stuff". 'Record advertising' was a abomination to him, as was self promotion. He just wanted to make enough money to live. His later managers wanted him to make it "big time",.. but this pissed him off to the point of violence.?
John never released a 'single', yet he composed many great songs which could have been hits. His integrity was song writing for the "song",.. not money, media, critics or even fan approval. What a man.!

The sheer beauty of this song is almost too much to take. It's also incredibly easy to play on guitar. But be warned, it's hard to stop playing it when you start. If there's anybody reading this who can't play the guitar, then buy yourself one and learn it. It shouldn't take more than a week to learn for a newbie. I've been playing for 25 years and to this day still find it one of the most satisfying things to play. Utter bliss!

I saw John Martyn twice in Dublin around 1958/59, and again in Limerick 10 years later. Fantastic writer, performer. Countless high quality songs, one of the greats from his era.

I don;t know John Martyn's story at all but in these videos I see a man bursting with creativity and love. If he had any struggle at all it was likely how to release all the beauty he saw into the world.

Sitting on a bench side by side, not a word spoken yet, we get each other without a word which is felt beyond compare. That unconditional love is something I was given prior to the passing. I love you forever & always, I miss you so very much.

The missus and I had this as one of the songs at our wedding, while we signed the register, along with a couple of Nick Drake tracks. Sale Town Hall, 25th October 2014. Beautiful.
