      I'm in awe of how we can share ideas and create custom items. I can't wait to get a 3D printer. I adore the gridfinity system. I'm a total novice and only have a whittle itty bitty Ender 2Pro, but I can just barely eek out some 4x4 pieces and plates if I print them on the diagonal. However, these new models are just making me itchy for a larger print bed.

    For jumper wires: affix some small neodymium magnets in a circle to some kind of tray, I use a magnetic parts tray. Then connect the two ends of each jumper to two adjacent magnets. You just need the same number of magnets as number of colours. Of course your jumper wires need to be magnetic - mine are.
    It keeps the curve in the wire which is usually the same shape it's used in, it's very easy to remove and replace jumpers in the right spot (just dangle the ends close to the right magnets), It's small and compact, and it's aesthetically satisfying -- it's like a rainbow jumper wire flower on your desk.

    I WILL buy a 3D printer and I WILL make cool gridfinity components for my art supplies. This is a threat.
    That idea came into my mind after you've shown the bottles. They will be perfrct for ink. Throw some holders for the pens and some holders for all the different nibs I use for my ink pens. I can already see it in my head, it's gonna be fun.
    I'm aware there's some extra requirements and playing around if I want to reliably hold liquids in these bottles, but it's worth a shot. I can always just make a base for the ink brand I use and have the normal bottle on there.

    Regarding Gridfinity for a specific assortment like that Dremel box set, the 1 year old Quinn Master Technician 428pc tool set has no trays or organizers. It’s meant to go into a tool chest with your own socket trays, pick-apart foam, wrench organizers, etc. For 428 pieces, all that adds up QUICK and you’ll still have less than acceptable results if you sprint for the $1ea 15 position socket rails. It’s a lot for one person so it would be awesome to touch base people who have the same set!

    I don't own a 3d printer nor am I capable of design, but it could be possible to print rails that attach magnetically to the vertical mounted plates that you could fit bins onto and slide out like drawers. If you found a more secure attachment method than magnets you could even make wider plates to attach the rails to for larger drawers or use multiple smaller pieces of specific storage that all belong together
    Longer arm options for the toolbox arms would make taller compartments possible, and maybe borrowing some of the design concepts from the giant gridfinity piece would strengthen it a bit for use with heavier tools or sets of tools

I feel as though a serious strength of a modularize, open standard system is it's ability to interface with other standardized system. Such as:
    -Storage jar blocks that use mason-jar lids
    -A rack/rail baseplate system that can mount on to a standard peg board
    -Compatibility with K'nex construction toys to make skeletal support frames for your organizers
    -using things like marbles to make baked in bearings for drawers, lazy susans and little roll-around carts (or you could use real bearings lol)
    -A series of router templates that allow you to carve gridfinity sockets directly into work surfaces or wood/plastic/aluminum in general
    ...and more!

    I've tested both Chappels system and Gridfinity. Imo, Gridfinity offers better stability and flexibility, but is a bit too small for my needs (big hands). Chappels system is better designed, easier access, but lacks stability and flexibility compared to Gridfinity.
    Ended up building my own setup, taking the best of both worlds. Huge thanks to both Freedman and Chappel for the idea!

    Imma get a 3D printer and make Gridfinity ds station for games, console, charger, and stylus (because nobody can keep up with their styluses).
    Gridfinity was the final push that convinced me to beg my grandma to buy me a 3D printer.

    Pro tip for anyone designing any subdivided storage vessel that ends up going vertical, use drawers in each layer. Disassembling a whole stack just to get to one compartment is a bit smooth brained, even modular storage system manufacturers figured this out awhile ago.

    The thumbnail + title made me think this video was about one thing: A toolbox that could contain a soldering station “and more.” Didn’t seem obvious to me this was a broad-spectrum follow-up to the open-source release of Gridfinity. Love it, but I missed the video originally because the the thumbnail seemed to tell me everything I wanted to know about the “soldering station and more” toolbox. ;)

    a paint can holder for paints of all standard sizes, sprue holders, indents for llabels to be put in, designs to make injection molded versions, etc would be great. ammunition holders would be controversial but interesting with kinds for each kind of ammunition ranging from .22 to 700 nitro (nitro is 100$+ a round)

    Hmmm... How about a project to help you get *other* things of the other box. Specifically, a laser pointer on a pan/tilt turret that is coupled to an ESP32 that is running a web server that contains a database of all of your bits & bobs and where they are in the shop. When you give it an item request--or a whole list--it displays the item(s) on a screen *AND* the laser cycles through illuminating a translucent hemisphere mounted on the front of each drawer/box/etc. That will allow you to easily find and grab everything you need for a project with minimal wiring/etc.
    Does that sound reasonable?

    • @ericlotze7724
      @ericlotze7724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d love something like this! My only concern would be the laser safety, but that’s manageable. Could also use other methods like integrated LEDs that light up/blink on the associated module etc.
      The organization/tracking but would be useful enough as is too (Open Source Warehousing/Inventory Management etc)

    • @ericlotze7724
      @ericlotze7724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also want to make a “Parts Vending Machine” someday where you basically insert a BOM (or just manually insert items like a normal vending machine) and it dumps out the required parts from bulk supplies, and this software could help that too.

    • @KeithOlson
      @KeithOlson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericlotze7724 I hope you spin one up!
      1. It only needs to be a 5mW laser, so it should be perfectly safe.
      2. The whole reason to run with a laser turret--besides being able to brag that your shop has a working laser turret, of course!--is to avoid having to wire up hundreds of LEDs and associated circuitry. Ugh.
