Yes the dealer wants you to buy a new car for more sales. Many families in my neighborhood all drive Toyotas that are over 20 years old and running good, I’ve replaced my tires several times.
Yeah lol, of course the dealer advised you to buy a new car 😂 idk if Japan is anything like the US when it comes to the automotive market, but it’s fairly common knowledge that dealerships will just try to get as much money out of you as possible. Most people I know just go to a third party auto care shop instead
I understand Shaken and new Tyres and stuff are annoying, I live in Japan as well. A 2016 Toyota still should be running perfectly you don't need a new car.
We see you brother. What I have learned is that you cannot rely on others to make you happy, family included. I’m currently learning from Exploravore here on TH-cam. I understand Japan has very high work and family expectations, but on the other hand I find your concept of zen and nature in your country very beautiful. May you find peace, healing, and happiness within yourself.
If you are at the bottom of the pyramid, you are the foundation!!! The rest of the pyramid cannot exist without you supporting it! I hope you're able to take pride in the that, because you are invaluable to your family.
BRO!!! You are the one working. The guy earning money for the home. And you are telling me that you are at the bottom of the hierarchy....bellow your son, wife and daughter.... And that your daughter is at the top? And shes 5? Really? I think it's time to become big daddy in the house. Every morning you wake up, you say yell at the top of your lungs "whose your dadddyyyyy". Whooooo payysss the billlsssss.
People love to pretend Japan isn't gynocentric. It absolutely is, in some ways even worse than the West. Which is an incredible feat as the West is INSANELY obsessed with catering to women.
Probably the big difficulty in nowadays life is: If you are too nice you are a slave, if you are too harsh you are alone. Only if you manage to be somehow in between you will manage a life with kids and wife......
LOL what can i say , i never thought i would NEED this in my life. A 50 years old Japanese man playing with a remote control car and eating 7/11 Cod roe Rolls.... i love this man and his monotone dialog. I like hearing about his life and his place in society/family. I need more of him all day long. He is honest and just a fresh breath of air. Makes my worries dissapear as i eat some Doritos and drink my Lemon pepsi zero.
You seem like a smart guy. Surely you know you can just get the tires changed out on your old Toyota and not need a whole new car, right? See, what happened with me last week is the entire undercarriage of my Subaru Legacy rotted out, and the garage said it would be around $10,000 USD to repair it. Now THAT is something worth getting a new car for, which is what I just did yesterday. Got me a nice used 2016 Buick Encore for under $15,000 USD, a real deal for what it was and the mileage it had. Times could be so much worse, and there is ALWAYS a solution to your problems.
The distance the battery will take you is effected by the temperature the car is operating in. In high temperatures the battery lasts less time and Japan can get very hot. The battery also loses efficiency and its ability to hold a charge over time. All things to consider. Don't accept the stated distance the battery will take you as guaranteed.
I'm with the wife. The range is rubbish @152miles, it's probably not safe in a crash and the resale value is going to be pants. A decent second-hand gasoline SUV won't cost 15k usd lols.
Knowing this is your primary car and I am a owner of Tesla. I would not get EV car. Whenever battey is less than 50 miles, i always get worried. One time i had flat tire and had to order full flatbed tow truck. Repair ridiculously expensive. Insurance is almost 2x the cost. Theres also a good chance that charging station might be out of order. If its primary car then get either gas or hybrid
You are at the top of the family still, you provide the money for all this. Instead of saying "fights" say "disagreements", it is more appropriate. Good luck man 😂
I recommend you get a used Toyota Sienta Hybrid, which is 1.5million yen or so for low mileage. You can easily get 20km/l, which is around 2500 yen per 280km the same as your EV idea, but it's much more spacious and safe.
In Japan it does not make sense to travel by car for long distance as train and plane are way more convenient than car. So this car if for short distance. For this type of use a K car at is the perfect one. If your wife wants a SUV why don’t she start to work to contribute. There is plenty of work in Japan.
I can really feel the weight of this decision you’re making. It’s not just about the car-it’s about the family’s future. I hope you can see where your wife is coming from. A light EV van might seem convenient in a very short time, but over time, it might not hold up, especially in emergencies. I’d hate for you both to end up feeling stressed over something that was meant to make life easier. It could be a huge relief to wake up one morning, take a deep breath, tell her she was right, and bring a little more peace into the house. And for your side of things, I totally get wanting something easy and affordable. But think about all the adventures and time with family that a durable car can bring. Imagine one day driving the same car to take your daughter to her first day of school, then her high school graduation, and maybe even college. It’s not just an investment in the car; it’s an investment in all those memories you’ll build together with your family. So I would highly recommend to take a standard car or a Suzuki Jimny for greater family experiences. Maybe there’s a way to combine both views and find something that works for everyone. It’ll bring so much more happiness than one person’s preference alone. Best of luck, and I know you’ll find something that works for the whole family! You can do this, Papa.
This guys makes me super sad i feel soo bad for him. I cant understand how can you accept to live like this, im not saying dont work but it feels like you have no power in your own house that you pay for? Like what the green hell is going on this world????
I drive a 2015 Honda Fit (City). Strap on a set of winter tires and it survives the Canadian winter with not much problem. I like EV as well, but the stories about the repair is a bit intimidating.
Hierarchy aside, in this case, your wife is absolutely right. It's a much more practical, efficient, and reliable option for a family of four, including two young kids, to purchase a used, gas-powered SUV, especially in the event of an emergency.

Not only is a bigger car safer, but if her parents may one day live with you, you have to have more seating than a 4-seater. Your wife makes more sense than you.
Safety should be #1 priority. Imagine a head-on collision; that front end is non-existent. Even with airbags deployed if it has that, I would not feel safe. Good luck!
Gunna be honest bro, I’m a mechanic, and I’ll tell you, for that price, in this economy, your being robbed, your from Japan, get a Toyota or something, get a car that costs half that n you’d save to get fuel money. I am interested in JDM, the market is great over there for petrol vehicles made in your country, just shop around man even get second hand that’s a few years old from a main dealer, be just like new.

You do not need extra financial stress of having a new car!
