    Nationalise it.
They've cheaped out for years on service, performance, and infrastructure; all the while charging extremely high fares compared to our European neighbours who have better service, performance, and infrastructure.

In the face of current climate situation it is mind boggling that the government keeps implementing policies that drive more and more people off public transport and towards driving cars.
Travelling by train already often takes longer due to the lack of East-to-West routes and you sacrifice a lot of your travel flexibility. Now that they are not only more expensive but also unreliable, it just makes taking the train an option most people avoid when possible.

    • @michaelrch

Very true. But then the Tories are now talking about 130 new oil and gas leases, so they clearly don't give a flying fck about the climate emergency. Just another capitalist death cult...

Historically railway funding is at a high that's many times higher than BR ever received.
Also, which services did this government cut?
It's up to the service providers to adhere to the terms & conditions of their franchises.
And again the government has been fighting to keep the fares down. Train operating companies need to raise them due to the HUGE salaries of Drivers & the army of accountants being private requires.
It's not the government. Don't try political point scoring on a railway issue that should be laid at the unions feet.

  • @rufdymond

Just another example of the shocking state of affairs in this country - this was a disaster waiting to happen. Instead of recruiting more drivers, they made up the shortfall by asking existing drivers to work more shifts, now that the drivers are no longer prepared to that, the whole thing has collapsed.

    • @veryfitting

@D C the miniscule amount of taxes on those profits due to them being redistributed within the company to shareholders is a drop in the ocean compared to the collective debt put on the tax payer in general when bailouts of failing companies happen. That's what socialised losses means.

  • @JugglinJellyTake01
    @JugglinJellyTake01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

This is a failure to invest in more staff and training. By demanding staff work overtime they have forced up the cost of running the services to justify the inflated annual prices to make executive bonuses and dividends appear smaller. Staff have been forced to work overtime to cover their static pay which has had the effect of masking the degree to which executives are gouging the system. What has been compromised here is safety and it is not surprising with the scale of overtime.
Executives should be stripped of all bonuses and share options as they have clearly mismanaged the services. Meanwhile the government should renationalise all train service and scale up training for staff.
That is what levelling up looks like. It is certainly not gouging customers for ever poorer, unreliable and unsafe services.

If they can’t afford life on their wages, how do people live earning a third of what they earn. In the 70s coal miners went on strike, they closed the coal mines. British leyland went on strike and they were closed down. See what is happening they will be gone.
