🚶‍♂️ Japanese Taiko Drummers - Walking in Japan 日本の太鼓ドラマー - 日本でのウォーキング

  • 🚶‍♂️One of our local drumming groups performing in downtown Shizuoka city, Japan. This particular group includes many school age kids. Drums are called taiko in Japan where drumming has a long tradition within the spheres of entertainment, religion and warfare. The Japanese have produced several distinct drum styles of various sizes, most of which are played with a stick (though hand drums are also used). Traditional drummers may perform alone or in the company of wind and string musicians. Ensemble style taiko performances called kumi-daiko (as seen in this video) are a relatively recent development in the world of Japanese drumming and a style which has gained the attention of many outside Japan. Kumi-daiko performances are typically very impressive with numerous drummers beating out distinct rhythms on various sized taiko. The drummers can produce deep, resonant tones which carry for long distances and produce an unforgettable and almost visceral experience in the hearer. Taiko drum heads are made of cowhide dried and tightly stretched before being attached to the drum by iron nails (byou-uchi daiko style) or sewn onto iron rings (tsukushime-daiko style). Drum heads may be used for several years before needing to be re-stretched, though the cowhide is normally discarded after one or two stretches. Most Japanese drums are formed from the limb or even the trunk of the Japanese Elm (keyaki) tree while other types of wood are also sometimes used. Especially large drums may have been made from ancient trees (up to 1200 years old!) which are thought to imbibe the drum with a spiritual significance and presence.

I think I'm responsible for at least 1000 views of this video. I never missed a taiko event if I could get to it.
I miss Japan. Which is strange when you consider I arrived in Japan full of stereotypes and left three years later with tears, as if I was leaving my home.
    Travel is the best education!
    Thanks for posting this video!!!

I love how the third guy from the right controls his sticks when striking then lifting them rythmically over his head following the very same path at each time, as if his life depended on the precision of the movement. (The feeling of control coming from the fact that he doesn't shake his body left and right entrances me so much!!)
The second girl from the right has some kind of stong energy coming from each of her strikes while she uses the rebound to hit back... Those two are amazing me!

Thank you =SO= much for posting this, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I am an enormous fan of traditional Japanese music and dance- the shamisen, koto, ect- but it's not often one finds such a lovely drum performance by the kids. I think this is my favorite so far, it's absolutely beautiful! ~Kat

We did Taiko drumming at my primary school, it always received the most attention and praise whenever we did mixed school talent shows or mixed performances at events. I always felt special that I was lucky enough to be in the sixth form Taiko group, very glad I passed the audition. Hearing it in person, let alone playing it, is so much better than seeing it on video.
If you're someone who plays the drums, definitely give Taiko a good - join a troupe or something maybe, best thing since sliced

You realize that this is the dependance of the Samurai right? Put a short sword in any of their hands and you'll see a master martial artist. This is beautiful. Japan has basically mastered the human body and the different ways of honing it.

Assisti recentemente uma apresentação de Taiko e fiquei verdadeiramente encantada! O postante do vídeo tem razão quando diz que o toque do taiko nos soa vísceral. É lindo!

Just google seattle taiko. The west coast is where american taiko originated, so there are lots of dojos in california and washington. I felt the same way as you: taiko is amazing, but I couldn't play it.... but, you can! most taiko dojos are filled with friendly, inviting people and they usually have beginning level classes. Just try it out, you'll love it!
