I use the deco not only for guitar but when I have to record electric drums, I turn the saturation at 9 o clock and use the lag time as a double tracker. Makes the electric drums sound more acoustic.
If for whatever reason I could only have one pedal, this is it. Interesting overdrive, modulation, and echo. And it can define your sound, especially with the wobble. I’ve had it for a few years and I find a new cool sound every time I use it.
I have all the Strymon pedals except their drives, purchased a Deco shortly after watching this video, and to this day it is my single most valued Strymon pedal... and that is saying a LOT.
I am buying a deco. The flanger and saturation is the best I have heard in a pedal. I love Status quo, Jefferson starship and those flanger tape sounds... This nails them to a tee when I tried it.
I have honestly wondered what this thing was for, and you are the first video of this unit that really took time to explain the case for having and using this. Thank you!
Unbelievable sound!! Strymon is definitely the effect company to use for any sound you want. And, as always, Bea is the man. Great playing, I come here for the demos, and stay here to listen to Bea play. Thank you for the awesome music!!
I have both on my board, and this is 100% true. The Deco is hands down the most inspiring and musical pedal I’ve ever had. It’s the center of my whole sound. If I had to pick two pedals for the rest of my life, they’d be the Deco and the Flint.
When I had watched other reviews of this pedal it sounded like a really cool pedal, but still they left me wondering is it worthwhile having this on my pedalboard. This review really helped me to understand what it sounds like in a rock context, the overdrive sounds fantastic. I'll say it again, great review!
I just wanted to leave this vid after about a minute to check the pricing and availability of this gem but couldn’t leave until the end. Great demo from one of my favourite guitarists 👍🇦🇺🎸🦘
You can use the DECO for so many different functions (saturation, overdrive, flanger, phaser, chorus, delay, double tracker, etc, etc!), it's an extremely versatile pedal (arguably one of Strymon's best). Depending on the function you're using at the time (and of course your personal taste), the DECO can literally go anywhere in the chain. Rabea did a great job demoing this pedal (That Pedal Show also has a really good review on the DECO). The DECO pedal makes a really great argument for getting a pedal effects switcher (Boss ES-8, Boss ES-5, GigRig 2, etc.). That lets you just plug the DECO into the effects switcher and then position the DECO in the chain wherever your heart desires simply by using the menus/memories on the switcher! (no need to unplug and rearrange pedals). Using the multiple memories of the switcher, you can have the DECO at the front of chain, rear of chain or anywhere in between, whatever makes the most sense for the song you're playing and the effect you're looking for. I have the DECO already and having a blast with it. Can't wait to get a switching system sometime down the road and then really open up all sorts of possibilities. Good luck!
Tricko, As to your question of redundancy to the Strymon DECO, sure the DECO can do a tape echo style of effect but it does so many other things in addition to that (think Swiss army knife!) I personally wouldn't put the tape echo at the top of the list of things the DECO does. Thus IMHO, I wouldn't consider it redundant to your Belle EPOCH at all. In fact I think they would make a really sweet combination. To me personally, the DECO has so many features and capabilities it can compliment many other pedals without ever being totally redundant. Check out That Pedal Show which shows all kinds of things the DECO can do th-cam.com/video/kuj0Oi2_7yU/w-d-xo.html With so many types and styles of delays and echos, you could argue one could never have too many delays to choose from (although not all on at the same time!!) That Epoch is one cool pedal. That Pedal Show has a good review on three tape echo pedals (Strymon El Capistans, Belle Epoch, Echoplex. th-cam.com/video/729c1YkDyWc/w-d-xo.html. They do a great job tweaking each of the pedals as well as doing a lot of AB comparisons between the pedals. The EPOCH is one really cool pedal, thanks for bringing it to my attention. All three are really good actually, I'm just not able to decide what precise characteristics I'm after so I'll have to keep listening and figure it out someday. Thanks for the write and have fun with your Belle Epoch.
Awesome playing as usual and thanks for taking the time to explain the features enough for the novices among us (me at any rate!) to understand. This pedal does loads and does it really well. Thanks.
This is a great review on a very different pedal, best I have seen by a mile. Playing, explanation and variations on the controls give a very clear idea of what the pedal can do. Thanks, now I need to get one!
@Rabea, where was deco placed in the signal chain? Is it before the amp or in the signal loop? Strymon website says that it is designed to be last-in-chain effect, but the effect of "driving the amp with increase in volume" is typical for overdrive pedals placed in front of the amp. Using Deco in front of the amp would make it a highly-priced-overdrive-buffer-pedal somehow. Or am I wrong and this pedal is really different than way cheaper buffers?
Rabea, where would you put the Deco in your signal chain? After the drives, after other modulation, or at the end of the chain after reverbs and delays? Great review for an awesome pedal.
well you didn't ask me, but I'd place it at the very end, even after the reverb. Strymon recommends that as well. The reason is simple: If you'd record on a real tape machine, all your pedals will play in the machine. No one listening to a tape record whould place any pedals after it, right? That's what it's built for but do whatever you like with it. The sauration is not like a gain stage, it's to warm up your overall tone and make it sound more vintage.
The beauty about this pedal is that you can use it in so many different places in your signal chain. I use it at the end of mine, to saturate the overall tone as well as bring some of that tape wobble to the sound. If you're using a harder saturation setting for overdrive, or the tape deck for chorus, flanging, delay, then you might be inclined to use it earlier in the chain.
That's just sick R. Had mine for a year or longer and am trying the trs stereo breakout cable for wide mode stereo setup tonight. Who knew it had a switchable jumper inside as all Strymon 2 switch pedals have for stereo out? You inspire.
I tried a Volante, but it was too complicated. This seems like the better way for me to go. It has That sound! I'm about to be $300 poorer, but I'll have a Great setup! Thanks!
The DECO is a dark horse. Often overlooked but its definitely got MOJO like most of the Strymon pedals. I use this with their FLINT and EL CAP. Endless possibilities with these 3 pedals. Nice review as well.
JYelton wow... that’s mental. I haven’t heard that since I did this video, and you commenting on this just made me realise that’s where the verse from Congress came from. It’s a Toska song we just released.... that’s craaaazy!
Thanks for posting such a thorough and well played demo. Very impressive range of sounds and you didn't even touch on some of the extended features. I have one on order. Currently, I only use an OD pedal into reverb into tremolo. I'm thinking I would place the Deco at the end of that chain. What do you think about that placement?
Ok, whew....Great review and amazing pedal. That was an adventure into a lot of different realms of bliss. I feel like I just came back to the future. Can anyone recommend the best placement of this pedal. Like after my gain/drive pedals and before my other effect pedals or at the very end of the chain? I realize the mileage may vary but any suggestions on someone who has experimented. I don't run an fx loop and usually split into two different amps for stereo.
Hello Rabea!!! I am a great admirer of yours here in Brazil , I wonder , the sound that you did by adding the pedals strymons Timeline and Bigsky, which the binding order them ... The signal comes from guitar and is first turned on the timeline and then the reverb ? or the contrary ? big hug.
+Rabea Massaad Thanks for the feedback. Congratulations for his talent and his great work . Here in Brazil we have many fans. So. I 'm calling right ( Guitar - > Timeline - > Bigsky -> Pa) Why when I call both my delay disappears? Do not get the same depth , the same reverb is not with the same ambience . Victory at Video Amps when u connects the two strymons the sound was amazing ! What's your secret ? Big hug!
hey man, awesome review, just on thing: didn't you say it simulates tape saturation? So I doesn't drive the amp, the distortion comes from a simulated oversaturated tape (which is nice, I love tape distortion)
She I say simulates, I mean it is creating the effect of a tape saturation, because obviously there isn't a miniature tape recorder inside the pedal! That's all I mean dude. Sounds great!
Wow! You really were chunky back then... well done on your recent weight loss campaign! Great job. And thanks for a brilliant demo as always. Just what I needed.
hey Bea could You please explain me something? I noticed in a production tutorial done by Ola Englund he uses a compressor with 0ms attack time and a good amount of gain reduction on ALL of the guitars( double tracking). Doesn't it remove all the "life" from the strings? Why should he do that? PS: AWESOME playing as always!!
I think it depends on the producer and the kind of music you are wanting to mix. I tend not to really do a lot to my guitar tracks other than a little bit of compression. One thing I do do is pull out most of the low-end. anything above 120 250 Hz gets shelved to allow the bass to come through the mix
***** He was producing a metal song( let's say in the style of Periphery). Personally I think the only reason to use a 0 ms attack time is when You wanna remove some transients, but there is no reason for doing this in a metal production. Am I wrong?
+fedetehk Depending on your threshold, you could be removing all the transients. Thus, a compressor working all the time is pointless, but the perceived volume increase on the make up sometimes makes people think it sounds better, and completely flattening it can sound "thicker". Depending on the style of metal, most of the distorted guitar(s) is nearly fully compressed by virtue of the amp creating the distortion. Dynamic metal guitar parts are usually more from track automation when mixing, than anything actually being generated by the guitarist. Hope that makes sense.
+Lexa Sae de Moph towards the end there is another delay going on (more than just doubletracking) which seems like a poor choice as it is misleading to what the deco does (even though it does sound great with the tape saturation)
Hey Bea, I'm looking to get one of these to use as a chorus, phaser unit. In the video you say that you use it as a saturdation pedal in front of the amp. How does the Deco work in the effects loop? Would the saturation side be wasted if its in the loop? Thanks man, great videos!
+Lee de Mora In the effects loop it would be more like a tape simulator, adding a tape-y vibe to the sound you created from your pedals and amp. Placed before the amp, it's more like a distortion (and double tracking, obviously) pedal.

hahahaha. thanks dude that was awesome :D
+Sorbmal Music lmao
hahaha! Man you can really see beyond.
Fucking brilliant!
😂
I have honestly wondered what this thing was for, and you are the first video of this unit that really took time to explain the case for having and using this. Thank you!
You're welcome Man, thanks for watching
If theres one thing i kno for sure, its the bea LOVES him some strymon!!
The best Strymon Deco demo I've ever seen, hands down :)
Wagner Rosa cuntrey backup
Unbelievable sound!! Strymon is definitely the effect company to use for any sound you want. And, as always, Bea is the man. Great playing, I come here for the demos, and stay here to listen to Bea play. Thank you for the awesome music!!
One of the best guitar pedal reviews I’ve ever watched. The man knows his stuff and is very articulate.
Many thanks!
Im going to get nailed for saying this, but this is Strymon's best pedal. This and the Flint.
You are 100% right. The most organic and inspiring pedals in their arsenal.
I have both on my board, and this is 100% true. The Deco is hands down the most inspiring and musical pedal I’ve ever had. It’s the center of my whole sound. If I had to pick two pedals for the rest of my life, they’d be the Deco and the Flint.
Seconded! This is my bread and butter!
To me is Deco and BlueSky, after that follow Bigsky Timeline and iridium
Could not agree more
When I had watched other reviews of this pedal it sounded like a really cool pedal, but still they left me wondering is it worthwhile having this on my pedalboard. Been putting off buying one of these for ages due to the fact that I can’t afford it.
Bought it today after watching this video.
My favorite bit about your reviews is the passion you show for the music and the gear.

Greg Adler Helpful comments.. I have a Belle Epoch Deluxe (and Epoch Pre) and wondering if this is redundant?

Nice, a real vintage sound. I like this a lot. Now I have to go listen to one in person. Thank you Bea.
Awesome playing as usual and thanks for taking the time to explain the features enough for the novices among us (me at any rate!) to understand. This pedal does loads and does it really well. Thanks.
Wow, that tape saturation side with the neck of the strat!
I would never have given a pedal like this a second thought - Strymon needs to pay Bea a royalty.
I had the pleasure of checking Strymon at a pedal exhibit, and I was impressed! I need to get one of their pedals in my arsenal.
This is a great review on a very different pedal, best I have seen by a mile. Playing, explanation and variations on the controls give a very clear idea of what the pedal can do. Thanks, now I need to get one!
Super thoughtful and detailed review. Thank you Rabea!

had the same question in mind... i assume end of the chain for the colouring it adds / to double track everything as one
David Lucas I've got mine before my reverb and delay, but after everything else
David Lucas put it in front of the amp after drives and anything else you have in front
well you didn't ask me, but I'd place it at the very end, even after the reverb. Strymon recommends that as well. Do you have any noise gate or is it only the signal chain Guitar-Strymon Deco-Amp
Thanks Rabea, that was a very nice review !
Finally, now I understand this pedal. My Strymon-hate is waning...
Need to call these kind of videos Rabea with the Gea!
Aside from my tuner and my 1970s maestro Wah, the Strymon Deco hasn’t left my board in 5 years.
Really ?? Cool was thinking about getting one Don't use too much modulation but love a repeat or two
It really reminds me of Ritchie Blackmore's tone in early rainbow (On stage live album in particular)
Just got mine- so excited to dive deep into this box!!!
Am thinking this would have some nice possibilities for vocals as well
Awesome demo! I gotta get one to push my Fender tube amp!
You are a great communicator. Awesome vid.
Have you tried the lex strymon pedal? I loved the sound in demo I watched and I'm considering it.
Rabea, I just love your playing style. The noodling starting at 24:44 is brilliant!
JYelton wow... that’s mental. I haven’t heard that since I did this video, and you commenting on this just made me realise that’s where the verse from Congress came from. It’s a Toska song we just released.... that’s craaaazy!
I don't understand why everybody is spitting hate here, we should get beyond that, we are all brothers and sisters. Stay in peace ! ✌
I love Strymon! I dig the saturation as an overdrive. I hope you demo the Dig - I really want that one.
Just awesome, man!
What delay did you use at the end part?
Some terrific Jimmy Page tones with the double-tracker. Great job not only demoing the pedal but understanding how the tape emulation works. Nice one.
Great Pedal, awesome sounds!! Congrats Bea!!
Is this worth having on a non-stereo rig?
Fantastic work, Bea!
Ok, whew....Great review and amazing pedal. That was an adventure into a lot of different realms of bliss. I feel like I just came back to the future. Very last.
The ending of the vid has MONSTOROUS Tones!!
It´s a really fantastic pedal. Use it on all of my songs. Great demo!
Bea, really great revue of a sweet effects pedal. Reminded me of 'Sunburst finish' Be Bop Deluxe, and a touch of Bob Marley. Cheers.

Hey whats up rabea ? Where/When can we get your music? Really digging what youve been doin man! Thanks
-Adrian
Pretty dark saturation....hmmm Treble booster into Deco ??? Or TS w treble up a bit
So this is the 80s hair metal guitar tone i had been hearing on records
Awesome as always!
Hell ...i love this sounds!!!! Thanks Rabea!!!

This review was sweet! That pedal made absolutely no sense to me before this video. Nice job man.
Sounds very fun to play with.
Fuck me his guy can play. Subbed.
+Attacus3 Check out Dorje and Toska.
Fab review as always 😎
Great in depth review! I really enjoy Your playing.
Excellent!!!
I want one!! A swiss army knife for blues and rock, no?
excellent complete pedal demo
this sounds like it would match insanely well into a fender amp with a soul food
Love the video and wicked pedal sounds!
knowledgable review. Thanks!
Wow! You really were chunky back then... well done on your recent weight loss campaign! Great job. And thanks for a brilliant demo as always. Just what I needed.
but you're still ugly
Bea, will you do strymon DIG review ?
Brilliant review, thank you.
Hey man, great review, cheers!!
Rabea. Will you do a video on pinch harmonics?
Great overview

awesome review man, got to thank you
Awesome review man
This one is musical regardless of setting. Unlike some pedals, where some parts of the ranges are not useful.
Randy Rhoads would aprove hahaha ! Nice demo
Very good DEMO ...... sold ...... rabea that was pretty cool ...nice job
what delay are you using? Sounds so nice!!!
+Tim Hawkins he usually plays either a strymon timeline or a tc electronic flashback
+TheMaximusprime09 but in this demo he doesn't use delay, it is the lag time of the Deco pedal. Correct me if I am wrong
+Lexa Sae de Moph towards the end there is another delay going on (more than just doubletracking) which seems like a poor choice as it is misleading to what the deco does (even though it does sound great with the tape saturation)
Misleading? he specifically mentions in the video he'll be using delay to hear it in context with other pedals...
have you tried the t-rex one yet?
Are those pickups in the 245 stock? If not, which ones are they?
What distortion is he using? Sounds good!
PJ Jackson deco and valve amp
PJ Jackson deco and valve amp
at the end it is a Satriani sound!
cool pedal thanks...
Awesome.
You should've used this pedal for the how to sound David Gilmore video
Massive tones towards the end, mind shipping me one?
Bea, what camera do you use?
WhistlerPL i use a canon 650D for the close ups and my Panasonic HC-V700 for the main shot
Bea, you given up on Rita?
Great pedal. Rabea is such a great player that I warn the average guitarist that just buying this pedal won't make you sound like him. lol..
Wicked!! CHEERS!!!
3:00 lmao
Johannes Jørgensen 😂
Ha!
Well Done, Fine Vid
22:57 Damn I know this riff, but I can't put the name on it :( Can someone help me ?
Oh I remember now, it's No Women No Cry, don't know how I couldn't recognise this.
Holy Shit your good!!!
10:10 Wow
"British Handwired Amp" Do tell?
James Russo Probably Victory VX The Kraken.
Andy Birger I figured but aren't Victory's lunchbox amps PCB?
James Russo To be honest, I have literally no idea.
Andy Birger Lol me neither! Bea?
