    This makes so much sense! I guess dry dog food is like us living on a diet of Doritos?

      Dry dog food is convenient at times and it seems their stools are more firm with it. Most of the time I like to make their food with REAL MEAT - Chicken, Pork, Beef and sometimes organs too like hearts and gizzards, etc. For overweight dogs, cut down on portions and add water, too, because they can develop lots of issues from being overweight.

    I recommend for ”Foodie” dogs, give them bones that they could chew on. For example I have a lab, she unfortunately has become obese because she eats everything, my vet recommended this, I suppose its like when some people eat when their bored, they just got to be chewing on something.

    This was very helpful! I have a fat chihuahua and he HATES to exercise but I've noticed that his personality (dogality? 🤔) has changed and he seems kind of depressed. It's helpful to know that this is because he might be stressed because of his weight. If I slowly add more exercise, 5 extra minutes at a time like you said, will he start enjoying exercise more as he loses weight? Right now it feels like I'm torturing him by taking him out on walks, but I know he needs it.

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Thank you for watching. Yes, just start slow but make some changes in the diet area as well. Diet is 80% of the solution where the exercise is only 20% of it. Make those changes slowly by adding some additional exercise as well and you'll notice his personality will change toward normal or better as well.

      @@SaroDogTraining So I have a question my dog is an American pitbull terrier , she is turning 4 years old october 21st she is such a beautiful sweet heart , she also loves food , now is there some advice you can give me for feeding her home cooked meals , I feed her rice and boneless chicken sometimes , sometimes potatoes and sometimes I give her fruits like apple banana would you recommend that? Or should I just switch her diet completely to home-cooked meals every day ? and if so what is something that I can feed her daily that will be good for her I am trying to make her lose some weight stay happy healthy and strong sometimes it can be a little bit confusing when I look for certain foods a lot of mixed answers online people say this is good for them this is good for them and some people say no it’s not good only sometimes what is a good diet for her to lose weight and stay strong throughout her life , can you maybe list a couple of different cooked dishes that I can make for her I don’t feel comfortable giving her raw meat .

      Try different diet instead of food. Raw diet is a great diet which is more natural and easier for dogs to tolerate. They will love it too. Very long exercises can actually cause more physical injuries and may cause mental and emotional trauma in dogs as well, if they are overweight. By adjusting their diet and providing proper amount of exercise, you can help them not only shed some unwanted weight but also live better, healthier and longer lives. Let me know if you have nay questions. I'd be happy to help.

      First thing I would suggest is to stop feeding kibble or rice for few months at least or forever. They are the main cause of being overweight. For few months invest in providing fresh food, fresh meat and veggies. You can either feed raw or cooked. Also focus on providing ideal amount of exercise and healthier lifestyle. Here are some videos for you to watch and get some ideas of what to feed. My dog is a large coonhound mix w/ Gordon setter. Our vet removed an 11lb tumor in December. He lost so much weight. Now he’s back over 100lbs. He’s been on a mix of 2 cups of some purina intestinal cereal mixed with yogurt & pumpkin purée, an arthritis pill, & Turkey tail mushroom....2 x per day. He barely moves around.

    • @dennishassler605
      @dennishassler605 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to catch the weight gain sooner and reduce proportions or water down the food more. YOU obviously are a good owner and love your dog, but don't kill the dog with love. Dogs are not designed to live forever and they should not be overfed. I have a street dog that adopted me - she was in Mexico and only 18 lbs. at 1 yr. old - she was starving to death!!! Today she's likely 30 lbs. and seems a bit overweight, BUT she's got a stocky build, too. I'd like to get her down five or six pounds - when they are overweight they won't live as long AND they will have other health issues, to. Oh, and stay away from mass produced dog foods of any kind - I make my own dog food and the dogs are more healthy as a result.

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, don't focus on running as it will cause physical injuries. Walking is a great start of adding some form of physical activity in your beagle. Just slowly add 5 to 10 minutes a day to the walks for few weeks and then start adding more speed like fast walks or jogs. Then in a month or so, you can add some short running. Mainly focus on providing a healthy diet. The following video will teach you about the diet. th-cam.com/video/UDGUhkGF7K4/w-d-xo.html

    I adopted an Akita in October who is extremely obese. He has a rare genetic disease called VKH, and because of it, He's on heavy duty steroids that make him lazy, ravenous & retain a lot of water. He's seeing 2 specialists that are trying to adjust his meds so hopefully we can get him off of one of the steroids soon, but in the meantime, I'm really trying to focus on his weight. He should weigh 120-125lbs and he's 160 lbs. His previous owner was feeding him 10 cups a day, and he never did walks or anything, because he was working full time & in school full time...... So it's definitely an uphill battle. This video is very helpful, and I'm hoping some of the tips will help us out. Thank you!

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on my experience and what I've learned based on my research, you can heal your dog's health issue by some changes in his diet and lifestyle changes. I suggest starting feeding raw diet which will help to remove the medications and everything else that may cause even more issues. Most vest are not educated enough about health issues but just emergency related issues. Try finding holistic vets and talking to them about your dog's issues. Remember, most vets are in it as business and if your dog is ill, they make more money then your dog getting well. Let me know if you need more info and I will be happy to help.

    My dogs are both healthy and we exercise them each day, generally. My Lab-ShiPai mix is athletic, but getting old and has some right rear leg issues apparently due to arthritis. She runs fast, so I like to let her run free during walks so she gets a workout. My other dog is a Mex. street dog that found me - she's impacted by fears of abandonment, but she has some issues over eating - always has an apatite and loves the large Costco dog biscuits - she's smart and hides or saves many biscuits, too, so she somehow finds on in the middle of the night and will be eating it. She was 18 lbs. when she found me, BUT she's probably about 30 lbs. - looks excellent, but she is a tad overweight; thus, I want to cut down a bit on her food. I make their food using brown rice and meat - this smaller dog won't eat the dry food when we add it, but the other dog will eat it reluctantly.

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  ปีที่แล้ว

      Try feeding fresh food that you know what you are feeding your dogs. Brown rice is hard for dogs to digest it so I wouldn't recommend that.

      @@SaroDogTraining Some told me to use white rice, but brown rice is more healthy. Maybe I can use less of it. One guy recommends Oatmeal to thicken the food when it's too watery. I'm adding some things to the homemade food after seeing some of the videos on recipes for dog food. My big dog Spike is gone now, but he'd eat a bowl of food and if there's a pill or a pea that he doesn't like he'd leave the bowl and that pill or pea would still be there - the only thing he wouldn't eat!!!!!

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  ปีที่แล้ว

      Rice or oatmeal or carbs overall are not the ideal diet for dogs but if you want to provide some form of carb, cooked lentils are better.

    • @dennishassler605
      @dennishassler605 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SaroDogTraining I was just looking at lentils at Walmart, so I can add some. These are just fillers. One of my dogs attempts to eliminate some materials like Green Beans and Carrots, so those items need to be mashed up to avoid that. I want to cut back on rice. Occasionally they get loose so I watch to keep their droppings firm. I love when I'm in Mexico, because the butchers are like the old fashioned ones - sometimes they make meat and bones for the dogs - they charge $1 to $2 for a big bag that lasts for days. Sometimes, if I buy other meat, they give the stuff for the dog as a free gift.

    My golden retriever is pretty overweight and I'm worried about her health, we've changed her food to home cooked vegetables mixed with a little bit of dry food, but the thing is she hates going out. Since Covid we've been taking her out for exercise less and less, which we shouldn't have. She refuses to leave the house now unless she desperately needs the bathroom, her walks are about 5 minutes, or a lot of the time she goes back inside as soon as she's peed. She walks very slowly and I haven't seen her run in a very long time. When you try to make her walk further she sits down and refuses to move, it's hard to drag her without hurting her, but a lot of the time she stands in position so firmly that you can't get her to budge at all. I've recently started to try to retrain her to play fetch and rewarding her with small singular dry food pellets as a treat when she brings the ball back to try to encourage her without over feeding her, but she's just not interested. I have to toss the ball very close by, and even then she just slowly walks to it, she won't run. After the first throw she loses interest and stops going after the ball.

      Yes, dry food or kibble contains mainly carbs and it tends to transform to sugar which causes dogs to gain weight no matter what brand, what formula or how much more or less a dog is being fed. The best choice is to select a species appropriate diet for your dog.

    I have a Q about grains. What is the best diet for my nine-year-old Beagles? They have raw chicken for breakfast and a half cup of Hills Prescription Joint Care kibble from the vet. Dinner they have vegetable and meat casserole with rice or pasta. Treats are pig ears, bacon, ham or dried liver treat. And they have a bone every other day. Would you remove any of these items? Thanks, nice video and we will add 5 mins and a run in our walks 😀

      Grains are not natural source of diet for dogs but it is OK sometimes, a little bit. What you are feeding is fine except that I would remove the Hills prescription kibble since it is not natural and actually adds more toxins to the joints. Instead I would suggest to add omega oil to the food that you feed. Here is a video which I show what I feed my dog and it is what I recommend. th-cam.com/video/7bvN_9tAFZI/w-d-xo.html

Use a handful one person upstairs, one downstairs and each encourage the dog to go up and down the stairs for 10 minutes a day. Would you say that would be effective? A good focus is on diet - make certain you do NOT overfeed the dog and add water to the food to keep the calories in balance. Do NOT kill the dog with love and kindness - she needs to eat less. I have a lab mix female that's about 55 lbs. at 7 years old - she's extremely athletic but she's getting some arthritis, but she's always been the perfect weight. Maybe your dog has diabetes or something. A very strict diet should help her a lot. Given she's overweight, her life will be short and she's likely to have other health problems, too, so be prepared to lose her at some point and that's when you can give another dog a great life.

      Make sure to feed enough food, everyday. Find out the ideal weight for her and feed her based on that. For instance if her ideal weight is 40 Lbs., you should feed her 400 grams of daily food. Also, rice is one of the causes of gaining weight so, I will remove that first. The other suggestion that i have try to focus on feeding green leafy vegetables and in form of puree or juiced. That will make it easier for her to eat. So, basically focus on feeding 75% meat and 25% veggies. I also suggest to feed raw if possible. Here is more info: th-cam.com/video/7bvN_9tAFZI/w-d-xo.html

      Depends on the breed and the breeding. But overall, you can help it to lose weight so it won't put pressure on its hip and joints.

    My dog its 6 month and weighs 19kg 500grams and she is an american bully classic and this breed here where i live its unknown and really strange to find, and my Veterinary who is a well known vet, told me she is overweight and told me all the health risk, i reduced her food intake and she looks more slim and more agile but she is losing weight slow and also gets really exhausted after running and playing with me. Its being hard for her losing weight, i do not know if changing lower calorie croquettes or vegan croquettes?

    • @SaroDogTraining

      It is not about the calories. It's about feeding the right food. Start feeding a raw diet and avoid lean meats. I will share a video where you can watch what I suggest to feed your dog. Also, don't focus on providing too much exercise. Over-exercising can cause additional internal and physical stress in your dog. Here is the video: th-cam.com/video/7bvN_9tAFZI/w-d-xo.html

    My dog is a beagle cocker-spaniel mix who is 12. He’s had some joint problems which has impaired mobility and he’s 80 pounds now. Luckily we just got him some weight loss food prescribed by the vet. On top of the food, how many walks should I give him a day and how long until I see progress?

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would skip the prescribed pet food recommended by your vet. They are not going to help with the weight loss. It will make your dog to lose lots of nutrients that it needs to lose weight and stay healthy. Instead feed home made food and walk your dog at least 30 minutes at a time, twice a day for the next 3 months.

    Excellent Tips! Thank you. Do you think swimming is a good exercise for dogs? Everyday, I have a 1:30 hours of walk with my lab girl, but she is still overweight. I usually give some treats to her, she loves them, do you think treats are bad for dogs?

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Swimming is an excellent way of exercise for an overweight dog. I highly recommend that. Reduce the amount of walk to no more than an hour a day. Preferably, brake it down to 2 half hour walks. One thing that I have noticed, even with my own dog, is that as soon as I reduce or cut off the treats, he lost the unwanted weight. Treats contain usually high calories, depending on its type and they need to be considered as a meal. Just figure out the daily intake amount that is ideal for your dog and count the treats as part of it.

    • @SaroDogTraining

      It will depend on how bad the situation is. It will depend on your dog's metabolism, how consistent you will be to follow the new routine which is to reduce the food intake and replace it with clean and fresh, raw food, and add some minimal exercises on daily basis. Overall, it will take 3 to 6 months.

      Unfortunately there aren't any good kibbles because they all use the same concept to make. I would suggest investing a bit more in a fresh food section rather than dry food section. You can also try mixing some fresh food to the kibble which I explain in the following video: th-cam.com/video/rkLoKm4f_pg/w-d-xo.html

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do everything properly and follow the instruction, you should see weigh loss within a month. You don't want your dog to lose weight too fast as well. That is not natural and healthy. The longer it takes the better. The slower your dog loses weight the healthier. Please remember, that any dry food or kibble, no matter how expensive or how good the bag claims to be, it is not healthy and it won't help with weight loss. That is because over 60% of the kibble or dry food bag contains sugar in the form of carbs. So, instead, I suggest you to try feeding fresh food or raw diet. Here is a video of what I feed my dog and what I suggest to feed dogs. th-cam.com/video/7bvN_9tAFZI/w-d-xo.html

    • @SaroDogTraining

      Dogs don't need rice, especially brown rice because they can't digest it well. Also, dogs need to have meat in their diet and can't survive on veggies and rice only. It will also cause lots of digestive and health issues. Dogs need 75% of meat and 25% veggies in their diet. Also, try t follow the 3 steps that I shared in the video.

      No worries. I can give you some ideas to work with. I also suggest adding some omega 3 oil in her food. It is a good idea to allow your dog to fast and just feed once a day but you also need to feed her good food in order for the body to be able to burn fat instead of sugar. If you feed kibble, then she will be burning sugar but if you feed raw diet, she will be burning fat. Also, try to give her 3 to 4 fast walks a day. Do this for the next 6 months and you will see drastic changes in your dog's health and weight.
