The best striker ever. He ended his career when he was only 28 years old always playing between an injury and and another. He was the swan of Utrecht the most creative, talented, and skillful striker that I have ever witnessed.
I don't see him play live but Ronaldo 9 may be in his class 😇

Have to comment tonight, stuck watching old videos in Spain during lockdown. I've been watching football for 40 years and have been lucky enough to have enjoyed all the great strikers of the age. No one can hold a candle to Van Bastens all round game. Touch, balance, strength, pace, technical adroitness, hold up play and cold-bloodedness in front of goal. Watching this compilation it really hammers home how great a header of the ball he was too. His long range shooting, with either foot, is also incredible. I can give him no higher praise than this: if I had to select an all time eleven from all the players who ever laced up, he would be my number 9. Taken from football too soon in 93 as he was approaching the outer limits of his talent. At least we have these goals to remind us how special he was.

I fully agree with every single word you said. I have been watching football for 56 years and for me Marco van Basten was the greatest striker of all time. He could dribble, shoot with both feet, majestic in the air, exquisite ball control, effortless grace for such a big man, supreme goal scorer of extraordinary goals. His goal against Russia in 1988 European Championship final is rightly lauded. However his goal against Real Madrid at the Bernabeau in 1989 defies belief. The man was simply incomparable !!

With intention? You mean intentionally hit the pitch and loop(in some cases) over the goalkeeper? The intention is to keep the volley down(and not hit it over the goal) and in doing so hitting slightly above the midline of the ball and it hitting the ground first to varying effect. Intentional? No - I think he would tell you exactly this. Keep the volley down is the aim...yes you can dip them intentionally but generally not from the situations those goals show- keep it down is the first priority - hit the target and you have a chance to score...hit under the midline and you hit row Z in the kop stand, lol.
R9 and Van Basten share the best striker of all time Podium. Both could do it all. Both moved the ball close to their feet despite being tall. Both have that killer instinct and hunger to win. I cant separate them. I'm not Brazilian and I'm not Dutch so I have an unbiased opinion on these two 100% just incredible players . I'd have both in my team if they could both fit in there somehow.

I think people tend to over rate R9naldo a bit as a striker/centre forward because he was so skilful on the ball. There's no doubt that he is one of the best ever no9s but he wasn't as good a finisher as guys like van Basten or Muller (especially with heading ability) and he could also be a bit greedy and wasteful at times.
R9naldo was a very good finisher but it wasn't his best strength. His best strengths were his on the ball skill, creativity and lightning fast pace.
Van Basten is the most complete centre forward of all time. He had skill on the ball, good vision, superb heading ability, lethal finisher with both feet, excellent team player, could score goals in multiple different ways, including from outside the box, good crosser, good passer, penalties, free kicks, he had it all. A perfect player for that position.

I think what made Marco van basten unique compared to many other Legendary or top class centre forwards,number(9)was his economy..He had all of the tools,speed,skill,strength etc,but u see that so many of his goals were scored using 1 or 2 touches.Absolutely no time or energy wasted.

The fact that pretty much all of the truly great Italian defenders who played against him declare him as the greatest and strongest striker they ever faced says all we need to know about the man. Especially as Serie A in his era was a very physical, harsh and cynical league to play in, you had to fight and earn every single goal you scored, as nobody ever gave you one for nothing! Van Basten had everything…pace, height, strength, skill, touch and could finish from anywhere! A legend and master of his art 🙏🙏🙏

Ronaldo played with a rotten knee in his peek, injured numerous times and kept being the most complete and dominant footballer after Pelé and winning it all, beyond multiple legends. He just made the impossible that basten couldn't do.

Van Basten was a real game changer for club and country. It's sad that he didn't go far in the World Cup-they were one of the favorites in Italia'90. But he still reserves a place as the arguably the best striker ever.

I haven't seen enough footage of Puskas or Eusebio so can't comment on them but van Basten, Romario, R9 and Muller are the top 4 I've seen.... I don't think any of them are 'better' than each other because they all have advantages over each other in one way or another, but van Basten is the most complete and that's why he'd be my no9 in my all time team.

O Milan com toda certeza foi a equipe mais completa que vi jogar : Rossi , Tassoti, baresi , Costa curta , maldini ( ele era lateral esquerdo no início ) rjikaard , ancelloti , donadoni, virdis, guljt e van basten.

Could place it perfectly when needed to, could end 2 defenders career in 2-3 touches if he needed to and could break the net off the goalposts if he had to. Imagine if he played until 36-37? Van Basten is to my eyes the most entertaining player to watch, most of his goals are pure art and recuare a lot of skill. He and Ronaldo the phenomenon are the best strikers in mi opinion even though there are other players with better statistics. It's such a pity they have had a hard time with injuries during their careers.

Era così due spanne sopra, che tutto quello che faceva sembrava naturale, semplice e addirittura facile... uno dei pochi che giocava a CALCIO veramente (anche in confronto a tanti del suo stesso periodo... e stiamo parlando, almeno a mio modesto parere, della golden age del football).
E' "Il Calcio" come dovrebbe essere giocato; Van Basten é per me un modello sportivo calcistico, tanto quanto Baggio

OMG... this guy is extra ordinary. Can plan and score with both legs, can dribble easily and score with head. I watched 3 different types of bicycle kicks like its made easy for him. His style of play is absolutely different . Hes too talented 😮😳
