"One of those films Hollywood would ruin if it had the chance" The best review I've seen for a film.
It had me laughing. So true, it would have some stupid identity idiology.
@@totalmentemad Yes, like making USA look superior or the hero when it is not or something like that, you are right!
@@TheGoodContent37 or replacing the Japanese with an other race.
@@giathuanleviet4138😂😂 As an American I admit that Hollywood filmmakers genuinely enjoy replacing everyone with blonde, blue eyed actors if given half a chance...
@@amonstrwthnThat's not what hollywood does. It replaces the white and asian actors with black and hispanics.
1985 - American Ninja
2024 - Tokyo Cowboy
We have truly gone full circle.
1986 - Gung Ho
The turns have tabled D: lol
1994 - Tokyo Cowboy
BE THE AMERICAN THE JAPANESE THINKS YOU ARE!!!!! HURAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
As an Asian who moved to North America 15 years ago (Alberta, Saskatchewan), this trailer brings tears to my eyes. I fell in love with the culture, people, and way of life, and the locals embraced me and my family with open arms.
When I was growing up we had a guy from Japan come move in with us for a while and we lived on a farm but not like this one, we just had a horse, couple cows, chickens, and a small field. He was a super hard worker and he used to say all Japanese are hard workers lol. He shared a lot about Japan and I always wanted to go but never have gotten to.
@@innoc3ntbystndr did you watch the original Tokyo cowboy set in Canada back in 1994?
@@gamefandotnetGood story. The end was sad.
@@gamefandotnet I sincerely hope you go someday. Japan is an extraordinary place.
What did you do in Alberta? Did you become a cowboy?
Much respect for having the guts to make something original! Tired of remakes from Hollywood
Lot's of original films come out EVERY WEEK. People just don't watch them.
but isn't this movie basically Michael Keatons Gung Ho?
@@brucef310 So true! It’s so ridiculous to hear people endlessly complain about being tired of “remakes from Hollywood”’or whatever. Anyone who says that is openly admitting that that is all they watch (which is how they got sick of it). There are literally TONS of movies just like this one being made in North America, South America, Africa, Australia, Europe (east and west), Asia, and even parts of the Middle East. This is nothing new, but people continue to ignore it and then complain about the ‘bad’ Hollywood stuff THEY keep watching! 🙄 The writer of this film, Dave Boyle, is American and half-Japanese, and has been making movies JUST LIKE THIS ONE since 2006! So where were all the supposed Hollywood haters when he needed them? Now, he’s got Netflix’s House Of Ninjas under his belt, so suddenly anything else he does has higher visibility, but he’s been at this for a while. 👍
Original, asides from the idea of a man from Tokyo being a modern-day cowboy in the west in a film called "Tokyo Cowboy". It was already done back in 1994.
@@SweetZombiJesus That was a Canadian film, and a considerably different story. But yes, it was reasonably original at the time, but hardly the first ‘cross-cultural’ comedy-drama ever made. As I suggested, these kinds of smaller, independent movies have been around for decades. People who bemoan the lack of originality in “Hollywood” movies are simply watching too many Hollywood movies and don’t realize what else is out there. 😉
I love how this movie is a "SALARYMAN FILM".
"Salary" is the Japanese word for "cow"
@@TheWhippingPost No, it isn't. Stop spreading lies
@@Coffee_Fuelled_Jerk Yes it is, if you don't have the power of god and anime on your side please stay quiet
Hello. My name is Cowboy Tanaka.
Ahh u beat me to it 😅😅😅
Papa bless
@@paulysantaana1728yeah,me too lol
A man of culture, I see.
@@crumbs7826 We see him everywhere. We miss you, Frank.
Saw this movie’s premiere at a festival in Kansas last year. It’s fantastic!
As a Tibetan myself we lost our country to china in 1951 and my family escaped to India in 1959 ..
whenever my late pala(father) sees any western movie he says it looks so much like Tibet the farms and the horse riding and the mountains, reminds him so much of Tibet back in his days. So western southern movies has always had a special place in my heart.
God bless u all.! Have a good one .
Free tibet..
majority of the Tibetan population were slaves before CCP took over, so in this case I would say its good that China took over, since they ended slavery in Tibet
@@newmangan give your TikTok a break and then maybe just maybe you will think independently. There has been no term for slaves in our Tibetan culture . The thing u r learning from CCP and TikTok is called “miser” a Tibetan term . Which is a relationship between a lordship and peasant.
I guess you will in the years to come, say that your good old loving CCP is freeing Philippines of their sea as well.! Good for u kid.! Always has a reason for the communist….
How much did the CIA pay you for this comment bro
I want some of that CIA money too
@@newmangan So they ended slavery and replace it with neo-colonialism or what?
I wish this was based on a true story.
Japanese A5 Wagyu quality is on a whole nother level 🙌
It could never be made in America.
According the film's website, this was inspired by an article about a Japanese salary man that trained at a ranch in Montana. Even true stories are filled with embellishments and "creative" changes.
My understanding is that the cows 🐄 are not for export, at least not alive.
Crikey! Not a remake, sequel or prequel - nor about superheroes. An actual original story. Amazing.
"story"? But when do the super villains show up? Is this a trilogy? Is there an after credits scene that ends on a cliffhanger setting up the cinematic universe?
OHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO there are 4 superhero movies out in any given year I can't somehow get away and am forced to go.... OH NOOOOOOOOO. But somehow i'm okay with watching sports or episodic tv shows that are televised every few days or week. The madness they hypocritical madness
There are hundreds of movies like this every year! you just have to know where to find them.
You do know like 500 notable feature-length films are released every year, right? Just because they're not showing at AMC doesn't mean they don't exist. Try harder.
40% of newly released hollywood films are original IP. it's over 80% for the rest
I'm happy Japanese cinema and representation is having a resurgence in the west after the early 2000's J-horror craze from long ago.
This is an American film. Japanese films never went away after the J-horror boom. A lot of excellent films have made it to these shores, via film fests, arthouse cinemas (the kind where Tokyo Cowboy has played), and even mainstream movie houses (depending on the size of your city). I was glad when the horror boom faded and we started seeing more Japanese films in North American from other genres. But at the end of the day, Tokyo Cowboy is fully American, but its secret weapons are writer Dave Boyle, who is part Japanese and has done a few cross-cultural films like this that are worth seeking out, and co-writer and star Ayako Fujitani (Steven Seagal’s daughter), a solid actress who rarely gets the credit she deserves. :)
@@Coolestmovies thanks God this is not Hollywood movie.
where are the black japanese representation though...;)
lol what a dumb take. Japanese media has been popular and success here since the damn 70-80s. You don't need to inject DEI nonsense here.
@@JohnDoe-pt7ru Exactly. My own collection of Japanese cinema (including some nice prints that cost me a pretty penny) dates back to the silent era, and certainly westerners have been aware of Japanese cinema since at least the 1950’s. The same goes for movies from a lot of countries. They’ve often landed on our shores, but too many people just bemoan “Hollywood” because that’s all they watch, until they ‘discover’ a trailer like this one. 😄
I saw Tokyo Cowboy at the Omaha Film Festival back in March 2024. I loved it and it was my favorite feature film that I watched there, for reference I watched 3 feature films during that film festival.
It had a lot of subtle and great humor, an interesting clash and blend of two different kinds of cultures with Japanese culture and Rural American culture, the main character saw some really nice character development, and the cinematography is excellent with many beautiful shots that were filmed on location in Montana. It's not often during feature films that the audience laughs as a whole in the theater, but there were at least a half dozen moments where the audience couldn't help but crack up and a lot of that was aided by the good acting and the good script direction I saw in the film.
One other thing is that we get to see three different languages spoken in the film with English, Japanese, and Spanish. So we really do get to see many kinds of characters with various backgrounds come together in this film. The ending to the film was really good and the cherry on top that did a nice job of sticking the landing.
Thank you for your excellent review. Because of it, I am going to see it tomorrow, it is playing at my local AMC theater.
1:19 I recognize that face anywhere. That is the Yakuza boss from "Kill Bill vol 1", the one whose head was taken by Oren Ishi.
Yup it’s Jun Kunimura he’s an amazing actor from Japan
And the Japanese man from The Wailing
Jun Kunimura. Also, the tea house gunman from _Hard Boiled_ who gets killed by Chow Yun-fat.
@@rogerkincaid931 Awesome film, thanks for the reminder!!
I saw this at the Zions Indie Film Festival earlier this year, and I absolutely loved it. I hope it gets a huge nationwide release and that it does well. So good!
The quote on Hollywood ruining the film if they had a chance brought me glee. I will watch this film.
Arata Iura is a darn great actor for sure. This is going to be a gem.
For those interested in his recent works, for starters do check out the Japanese drama Unnatural. He plays a mortician / autopsy doctor whom one day had to literally autopsy his beloved murdered fiance.
Finally something original! Respect and thank you.
I agree with you 100% something original💯😎
Original movies come out all the time. You’re just not paying attention.
@@DADDYFATSACKABLE I’m glad that some people are starting to look outside the box😎💯
Original movies come out all the time. Just people are just lazy to go the theater.
Hologram for the king

Gung Ho
I think indie is the only thing saving entertainment atm, movies and video games both. Really like that quote about hollywood ruining it if it had the chance. Thats definitely correct
I was already about it after watching the trailer but “One of those films Hollywood would ruin if it had the chance” 100% sealed the deal for me. I can’t wait to see it.
Damn, Tetsuo Tachibana has arrived in America! 😂
We saw this film at the Prescott Film Festival. Tokyo Cowboy is outstanding! The script, acting performances, and cinematography are all first rate. This should be a general theater release, not just an Indy theater release: but it won't likely be, because there are no "movie stars" in the cast. Go see it on Aug 30.
This looks really good and seeing Jun Kunimura show up is a pleasant surprise.
People say anime , but Japanese movies are superb. Kurosawa,Ozu,Taakashi, Koreeda,Mizoguchi to name a few with impressive catalogues.
after all these years, we're finally getting the Rawhide Kobayashi biopic the fans have been asking for! yeehaw!
DUDE RIGHT
This looks a like a REAL movie and one I actually want to see. So glad it's independent as well. Hollywood would have ruined this like everything else they touch. This kinda reminds me of the real life story of a Chinese cowboy named Bruce Wang who told his story on TH-cam. Can't wait to see this movie. Hollywood is in a serious "good" movie drought and audiences are thirsty for good, wholesome, meaningful, and original movies.
Hope it gets played in the cinemas in the Philippines. I want to support this.
Finally a film release from Hollywood with a fresh and interesting concept. I'll be seeing this one in the theater.
Calamity Jane from Deadwood? I don’t need to see anymore, I know I’m going to love it.
You don't even know her name.
She was phenominal in that show.
Robin Weigert
reminds me of stories my grandparents tell me about my uncle who apparently used to help take care of the farmland for Japanese immigrants deep in rural mexico. Really makes you think about culture. i also have a very distant korean relative that would have lived as a farmer in Mexico around the late 1800s, really cool to see a movie that would give a glimpse into what that experience must have been like for them.
Lady luck granted me a theater nearby that is playing this. One of the best movies of the year!
This looks lovely and that last quote is funny and hopefully true!
"Everything you want an independent film to be"
"One of those films that hollywood would ruin if it had the chance".
Damn, hot burn😂
Straight up make me want to watch with a single line.
I just discovered Arata Iura in Unnatural and here he is in a full blown Hollywood indie...looks like a treat tbh.
I would love to see this, I hope it plays at my nearest arthouse theater

"One of those films that Hollywood would ruin if they had a chance" is my favorite review of the film, lol
Tachibana faked his death and heard Kiryu was in the US for a while.
It’s kinda refreshing to see an outsider get invested in American culture. Usually, it’s the other way around.
looks charming af to be honest, id watch
Original. Funny. Thought-provoking. Inspiring. I'm moving to Montana.
Is that Calamity Jane from DeadWood?!??? I'm in....
Yay! A film with an interesting storyline and no CGI!
“Tachibana-san, Makoto is safe… Please rest easy in the afterlife…”
Tachibana in the afterlife:
Hope it gets some Oscar noms!
God I love a good Indie film. -Especially a dramedy. They kinda just make things right in the world of cinema. They balance out everything
This looks absolutely incredible, can not wait to see this.
Finally a movie about Rawhide Kobayashi.
Wow, Its Cowboy Tanaka!!!
The comment I was just about to post lol
i like his innocence. ill watch it.
The fact the named it "A Salaryman Film" tells you everything you need to know.
Great to see Calamity Jane back in cowboy boots 👌🏻
Interesting and original idea. Not the usual rinse and repeat movies that hollywood is making nowadays.
Original, asides from the idea of a man from Tokyo being a modern-day cowboy in the west in a film called "Tokyo Cowboy". It was already done back in 1994.
It's like Gung Ho (1986) with horsies and moo moos.
Looks great, cant wait to see it.
"one of those films that hollywood would ruin if it had the chance" 1:42
couldn't said any better than that
Ill watch this just for the filmography. It looks beautiful.
Welcome back, Tachibana
Damn, the SBR trailer looks dope!
Cowboy Tachibana.
His sister is Makoto Makimura.
"Losing money, not funny." Hardest quote or lines of all time.
See you around cowboy
Japan has always produced quality films, dramas, anime. I stopped watching Hollywood crap 20 years ago. Hollywood ruins every remake of a foreign film. Looking forward to this. 😃
What do you mean "has always"? They produce an absolute litany of low-budget, uninspired, cheesy pulp trash all the time. There's nothing at all wrong with enjoying their offerings, but saying they always produce quality is a blatant lie on every front. Sure, it's easy to say Hollywood are the undisputed kings of pulpy cash-grab trash, second only perhaps to Bollywood and it's nonsense and rip-offs, but Japan is most certainly not an exception to doing the exact same thing.
Hero i am cowboy Tanaka
Ayako Fujitani!!!!!!!!
This looks very interesting
I want to watch this movie!
It's like the Michael Keaton movie Gung Ho but in reverse!
Whoa amazing film my family are herders, farmers and i visit our homeland to spent time away from yhe city that peace of animals and crops is peaceful and fulfilling.
If you want to convince them about wagyu beef he should have served them a wagyu course meal. That's the most alluring way to convince them.
Lol this reminds me of the Cowboy Neon at Osaka 😂😂😂
I love when a movie breaks out of the same old cookie cutter mode and does something original... Finally, this is something that is worth watching.
That’s something new and looks great.
Awesome, fascinated by the story
My name is cowboy Tanaka
THIS MAY BE A GREAT FILM
This is interesting. And that song too.
Ikr! I wish i could find the name of that song
@@gmansuyama Thanks for watching the trailer and for your comment! The song is our Tokyo Cowboy Theme Song, performed by Mai Fujisawa, who is the daughter of Joe Hisaishi. She's probably known best as the vocalist in Nausicaa Valley of the Wind (1984), which she performed for her father when she was 4! The lyrics are by Ayako Fujitani, who also stars in the film. You can hear the song in most of the online music stores as part of the Tokyo Cowboy Original Soundtrack. Hope you get a chance to see the film - enjoy!
@@ChadCannonMusic Thanks! The song is beautiful, and the film looks incredibly interesting. I'll definitely be watching this one when it comes out!
This looks good. I'm getting Percy Adlon vibes.
As long as it’s not done by Hollyweird, I’m interested.
This movie reminds me of the "howdy y'all, my name is Kenichi Smith" memes. 😅
Definitely going to watch 😊
Robin Weigert is a force to he reckoned with. I hope she got to shine in this role.
I hope she is just a supporting character. This is not about Americans.
Its just took them about 10 years to come up with something original
Im already crying and didn't even watch the movie
I have to watch this. It looks brilliant.
