@@mystraunt2705 actually there was one glitch, Pewdiepie and a lot more youtubers (even non english ones) lost a LOT of subscribers for that, but thankfully TH-cam fixed it and gave back all the subs. But yeah this glitch EXISTED.

Very true. Only comments had likes (I think likes on comments were added in 2007 or 2008, at the time I thought they were doing it to copy Yahoo Answers). I remember when they changed over to likes it was spring 2010, I wasn't too happy because I much preferred the star system (it was a couple months before my 10th birthday so that's how I remember it so exact).

One creator I follow did a test. He never said “like and subscribe” in his videos because he thought it was tacky. It turns out, after he tried saying it, he got a boost in his subscription numbers. Some people actually respond to being told to subscribe.

It actually makes sense when you think about it. A TH-camr I watch explained it like this: the reason saying “like and subscribe” is effective isn’t because people are sheep or anything like that, it’s because people often forget that liking/subscribing is even a thing until they are reminded of it. Whenever you upload a video that performs well, there will be a certain number of viewers who enjoyed the content and who *would’ve* liked/subscribed had they remembered to do so. So when those people hear the “like and subscribe” message, they think “Oh right. I should do that, since I do like this person’s content.”
I do when it comes to liking videos. I just forget most of the time.

I do remember a period in the early 2010s where the site was undergoing so many rapid changes that it felt like new features and designs were popping up for just a few weeks and then disappearing again lol.
One feature I really miss was being able to queue up videos by pressing the plus sign on the thumbnail. It was so useful! Maybe it’s still around but I haven’t been able to find it since, and this was like 10 years ago at this point.

@@CharlieBrown20XD6 I think TH-cam became like that more in the past 2-5 years because before then most content creators were actually more passionate. Now it is about making money and gaining subscribers/influence by learning the algorithm (not to say there aren’t any good creators though).

Asking people to share videos specifically is something that a lot of people used to ask others of, but nowadays not many do

It made more sense in the 2000’s when TH-cam was mainly full of one-off videos that consisted of strange memes that you’d want to show friends when they visit (because you didn’t have a phone that could send a link). But now you got a lot of video essays and long form content that most people aren’t going to watch more than once.

Nope, I don't like being told what to do. I watch a lot of videos without liking or subscribing, and I could be subscribed to a channel to know when they upload videos and never like any of their videos, especially if they're reactions or something similar. I don't need all that fodder in my liked videos list.
A ton of people do. There was some research done into it, and asking people to like and subscribe helps a lot. As for me, if I did like a video but forgot to like it, I like it after being asked to. (What a sentence.) The main reason for that is that it’s my small way of helping creators I like, even if asking people to do it is annoying. It’s zero effort on my end to help someone out.
Nope. I rarely do either anymore since it seems pointless. TH-cam automatically recommends me videos from people I like, and the few times I actually do subscribe it seems to show me *less* of that person’s videos.
So I’m in this weird scenario where my recommendations tab are filled with videos I want to watch from people I’m not subscribed to, and my subscriptions tab is all irrelevant stuff from people I don’t even remember subscribing to.
It seems TH-cam is better at figuring out what I want to watch than I am, so why bother? 🤷🏽♂️

I liked the star system, five stars for "I loved it", four stars for "I liked it a lot", three stars for "I liked it a little", two stars for "I didn't like it, one star for "I hated it", and no rating for a neutral opinion (or if it had super high rating I'd give two stars to express a neutral opinion or three if it had low rating). Only comments had likes (and the dislike button worked on comments, I saw some with negative ratings in the thousands) and the comment section worked differently back then (there were no threads). You could rate videos five stars, the subscribe button was yellow, and channel pages felt a lot more like MySpace profiles. Also, TH-cam had separate friends and subscriptions/subscribers lists (you could also PM people on here, I had so many great conversations with friends when I was little that are now gone forever). Also video responses. I apologize for the long-winded comment, you just sent me on a nostalgia trip to childhood.

The pulling out the statistics and saying "Only a small amount of my viewers are actually subscribed" method is the most infuriating one.
We can't ask much of creators especially with how bad the platform has gotten but the "only a small percentage of my viewers" one irks me so much. It makes me feel really guilty even when I am already subscribed to be watching the content casually and after hearing it I feel like I can't close the video midway through because it would make the numbers look bad

This TH-camr named LegalEagle did it in one of his videos. But the chart showed him that a majority of his viewers *were* subscribed. I can't believe that a lawyer would be deceptive on a platform like TH-cam!
The funny thing about that too is that that data doesn't necessarily mean that noone is subscribing. It just means that your videos are getting recommened alot to people who haven't subscribed, which is great!. You want your videos to be seen by alot of new people so you can grow your audience.

The fact these always got loads of engagement is probably why Twitter (and TH-cam) added polls.
