Bland or Tudor's Best MilSub? The "US Navy" Pelagos FXD

  • A Discussion around the 2023 Black Tudor Pelagos FXD "US Navy". The Third instalment of the FXD collection and some would argue the best iteration. A Design that is closely linked to the original Marine Nationale Blue model, this newest piece is "inspired by the watches worn by US Navy Members" - a model based on the early reference 7016. But is this model underwhelming? Have we not seeing this design and colour combination used too much at this stage?

The truth is this new version was designed and has been in use by the operators in Seal Team 6 for over a year. Tudor gives them a special dial and the squadron color on the dial in the word Pelagos. The US Navy would not give Tudor permission to say designed for us navy seals but watches of espionage on Instagram has covered this in depth.
This watch was specifically built for the end user. The fact is Tudor decided to offer it for commercial sale. I tried on one and I absolutely love it. It felt more authentic to the mil sub heritage to me.

Sometimes our expectations are greater than the final product and it seems like reactions around the Black FXD are quite mixed.
What are your thoughts on it? Underwhelming or Spot-on? 🥃 - Edit: Batches of these watches have been commissioned for Navy SEALs with a couple of tweaks added in the mix. I'm sure in the coming months we'll see some of these models surface (similar to the early 2-liners given to the MN)

SPOT ON: There is a MASSIVE difference between the initial FXD MN built for the french Marine Nationale, bespoke with a very purpose driven bezel to help actual commandos underwater navigation in active service and a color variation using US Marines history as a marketing justification. One makes sense from a collector and historical standpoint, one is a money grab move aimed at the US market.

I find the status of this watch confusing. Some articles say this actually is a real Navy Seal watch. The difference is that the US Navy version has a two-liner (just like the MN) and they did not want any type of markings on the non-military version.

According to watches of espionage blog this watch was created as a unit watch for development group. The text color and strap is to represent their squadron emblem. In use with the teams for quite some time Tudor has now made a version available. The military has a significant watch culture and unit watches among sof units is popular and profitable for watch companies as civilians many times want the watches sof guys wear. Other than the unit emblem engraved on the back and the four line vs two line dial script this is the watch worn by some of the most elite troops in the world. So not inspired by but built for…. I think this is a beautiful watch with an amazing story and will become a classic. Tudor is stepping up their game.

According to Watches of Espionage, the version of this watch that was commissioned for US Navy SEALs came with the option to customize the color of the Pelagos Text according to the SEAL’s respective squadron colors. Additionally, left-handed variants were also available for purchase. These features will likely never be available to the civilian.

I love the tool watch aesthetic of the Pelagos. I have the LHD and the 39 models with a preference to my LHD, possibly due to the amazing bracelet making it arguably the most comfortable bracelet watch that I have, my 39 comes a very close second. I love the great balance between form and function of the FXD line and hope that they do well. An LHD FXD would be an interesting release if Tudor do it. I'm not sure that the red dial text is a big issue for me anyway but I do appreciate different design preferences. Many thanks for sharing.

I wasn’t too keen on the blue dial/bezel of the FXD but the black fits the bill perfectly as the time is easily read with just the flick of the wrist. The only thing I wished they would’ve done is have the same bezel as the blue version. That right there adds more utility to the watch.

  • @DeeEx27
    @DeeEx27 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I get that people are disappointed by the way the watch was released. It's completely legitimate to have expected something different, something.....more. But it's hard to fault the watch itself. They are playing it safe, no question, but a black FXD is in my opinion just a more wearable watch. I speak for myself. I never took the MN FXD into consideration, because I'm not big on blue dial/bezel watches. But the new black one is definitely intriguing. I will just have to try it on and see how it feels on my 16cm wrist. I usually only wear watches in the 37-40mm range. I'm definitely more puzzled by their Alinghi/Red Bull collaboration since it completely misses the connection to the military.

Another banger of a video. A destro black dial would’ve been fantastic. The only thing holding me back on the FXD is the size, but an LHD version would’ve put me over the edge.
Regarding the release, I think what rubbed some the wrong way was the method rather than the actual watch. It was a little bit overkill for “just” a color/bezel change. Reminded me of the Omega releases earlier this year.

I understand the underwhelming response to this new Tudor issue (especially in light of the slightly sketchy US Navy link). It still is that great FXD design. A difficult one to beat. I recently bought my first Tudor. A FXD. ( greatly influenced by your videos). I had a choice between the blue and black. I chose the black although a difficult choice. Why the black. Simple out of a functionality perspective. I use the bezel for counting (like a clicker, mostly counting head of cattle) and a 60 click bezel is just more practical. Might sound stupid, but I do use it.

I was talking to a Tudor boutique yesterday (the fabric strap on my MN Pelagos from Watchfinder isn't quite big enough for my wrists, but fortunately one can order a longer size.) Anyway, if you can believe them, they have a very big waiting list for the MN Pelagos, but are only getting delivered FOUR PER YEAR from Tudor! And this is a Tudor boutique in a massive shopping mall near a major city. Another regular AD had previously claimed that they were getting two per year when I enquired about going on the list before going the Watchfinder route. So I don't think there is a lack of demand. I reckon there is a deliberate under-supply!

The biggest mistake they made with the black FXD is they changed back from the retrograde calibrations shown on the blue version bezel - it now looks like all other dive watches. You did not have to remember your allowed dive time towards the end of your dive - you set the duration against the minute hand at start, then when the minute hand hit the triangle you were done.

I'm actually a nutter with bezels... always using them for the most bizarre things (probably the worst person to ask) For the trip, used it timing when the plane was boarding, and then mainly in the water, usually 40 - 50 minutes at a time before getting out and going back in. It does come in handy when you least expect it 😉

The black Pelagos without red will be reserved for the next iteration of the original Pelagos - a watch that will hopefully be a good bit thinner (while still having 500m WR) and have a METAS movement. Bonus points for having hardened grade 2 Titanium (grade 5 for Rolex only) and an updated spring-loaded clasp. One additional feature that would make it extra hardcore - a grit/salt-clearing mechanism for the bezel. There are many people that miss the rehaut and date from the original. One thing I do like about the Pelagos is how it is a thoroughly modern watch, so I want fauxtina tan lume to stay far away from any Pelagos. I think we could get an updated standard Pelagos next year. I do like your LHD FXD version. It apparently exists along with a few other variations of the FXD. I wouldn't mind seeing an all-matte grey LHD FXD (my choice of FXD). I am surprised a crazy SOB somewhere in the world hasn't cut away the fixed lugs and added drilled lug holes to their FXD.

You and me both Ian... think it's mainly to do with ISO certification and all that, but man... being able to rotate the bezel both ways is so much more practical for quick adjustments. Maybe not the "safest" if you're actually using it to time a dive (highly unlikely) but for navigation, quick 10-15 minutes, timing stops etc. so good 🥃

I'm rewatching your video on this as I have been obsessing over the FXD lineup for several months, I'm struck by something you said comparing this release to a "beefed up P39"... I think the P39 is SO CLOSE to being perfect, and this watch fixes that. The 39 has the sunburst dial, which is an absolute travesty for my taste (nothing wrong with it, and I know some people will love it or simply tolerate it, but it's not what the pelagos is about).

When JC first pioneered the aqua lung for scuba diving , he was using high end watches like the submariner, blancpain, and the doxa as tools. As the hobby grew and became more affordable for the everyday man, then seiko entered the game with the skx models. They were the true affordable tool watches, for the masses. Even today the submariners and tudor pelagos models are basically fashion accessories. You might get the odd people snorkeling in them, but thats about it. The tudor model were used for military purposes, but the seikos, being cheaper and just as reliable became the the real tool watches of their time. By the 70s seiko had virtually cornered the market on dive watches and nearly killed off their swiss counterparts entirely with the invention of quartz . To call a 4k tudor pelagos now a tool watch , is almost laughable, they are a luxury vintage style watch , from the rolex family . The brand nearly died untill the black bay came along , but because of the rolex connection, they have gone from strength to strength. Dont get me wrong , i like the direction tudor have gone, but i feel they could muck it up by getting too expensive for most people too. Rolex are OTT and omega are getting similar in their prices , and it seems tudor are going after omega , with their new metas range etc....

Kinda strange , I was on the fence with the MN FXD because of the blue and countdown bezel but now Tudor gave me what I want I think I prefer the MN , go fiqure. I guess it may be because I did have a 39 so with the black dial and red text it looks perhaps to similar at a casual glance where as the MN has it's own identity.
The marketing of the new FXD seems a little contrived for me though, it's the modern Milsub that isn't called a Submariner which is based on a unique watch designed for the MN but is also a tribute to the US Navy ?? Ummmm.

The blue FXD is an underwater navigation tool because frogmen can't rely on the GPS signal underwater. This version with the elapsed time bezel was made redundant by dive computers some time ago.

More an issue of product release strategy, I think... If the black had launched first, enthusiasts would have predictably lost their 5hit. The blue could have come later and they'd have lost it all over again. As it is, Tudor doubted their niche product, so decided to tie it in with the MN for more splash and shizzle. It worked for the enthusiasts, but no one else is buying (err, French Navy, lethal bezel, nato only, low sat blue - all a recipe for slow sales). So launching the black second fell flat with enthusiasts, despite it being the better watch - more versatile, a proper dive bezel and a true dive tool. Fait praise? No; pure dive tool watches are very rare (Tuna, Sinn..?) and that marks this out as a confident, interesting and capable product. An honest dive watch.

You have to admit there are times where their brand motto "Born to Dare" just doesn't seem relevant anymore when a release like this is made.
I'm sure it's as great a performing watch as any Pelagos and black is both predictable and welcomed color. Sure, the connection to US Navy in this case adds to the watch's story. But, I still feel this is as far from daring as any watch could be in Tudor's production catalog.
That being said, I know a lot of folks still really want a blue Pelagos 39 and greatly hoped this recent release would have been it. However, it would essentially be the same recipe.. a color change and maybe the most predictable variation for the entire model line. Daring, still, I say it is not. But, I doubt few will care and can finally rejoice when it happens. Strong desire Trumps any dare when it comes to getting a blue p39 in the end.

I do wonder to what extent Tudor has reversed itself into a mid-century parking space, happy to turn out what to me appear rather tame, watery (pun intended) incremental models aimed at those already enamoured with the Tudor brand. The persistent use of, dare I say, somewhat tenuous contrived back stories with vague links to watches of the past that often bear little resemblance to the new launch model seems inauthentic to me. Can’t these new watches stand on their own merits? Does Tudor really need a crutch at every event? Does it betray a lack of confidence?
Also I do wonder to what extent non watch nerds can tell the difference between all the BB58/54 and Pelagos models - to them are they just very similar-looking with a snowflake hour hand that for all they know are the same?
If it wants to continue to grow I feel Tudor needs to be more assured and convincing, to look forward more to the future, to appeal to a wider audience.
But hey, what do I know! 😂

As a retired Navy Senior Chief, I was disappointed in this release. Thanks for pointing out the difference between a watch "inspired by" to one that could have been made in partnership with. That's where Tudor "missed the boat" HA! I would have loved to seen a model actually made in partnership with the special warfare community. Show the process of sitting down with these warriors; getting their input and then sell these watches in military bases around the world. Have Tudor come over to Coronado, CA or Norfolk VA with pop-up shops. Would have been fantastic.
