2024 Tacoma Off Road- 4 Banger Turbo...Is this your father's 4 banger turbo?

  • Do semi trucks have commercial grade turbo diesel engines? Can they last hundreds of thousands of miles? How? They are built for it. Sheldon Brown, Chief Engineer for Toyota says this engine was designed as a truck engine from the ground up. The turbo is built as a commercial grade turbo designed for 50% more duty cycles. Almost 3 inch cooling hoses. This engine was tested to the same rigor as the 3.5 and 4 liter V=6 engines on the Tacoma and 4Runner. All I know is it is faster and smoother than my 2023 Off Road.

The 4th generation may be faster, but historically the Turbo doesn’t last as long as a Naturally Aspirated engine.
It remains to be seen if the Turbo will last 300K miles or not.

Only a few channels has made this very obvious important point!!! The 2024 Tacoma share it’s 2.4L Turbo 4cyl with the new Land Cruiser, I don’t think Toyota would put the name of the Land Cruiser at risk by using an untested engine with weak a turbo design! Unlike GM who is maximizing out its 2.7L turbo for class leading horsepower and Torque, Toyota is being conservative with power and torque for durability over the long term.

I have a 2020 Tacoma 3rd Gen. And speaking about the gear hunting, it was a nightmare on long
trips. Until I had the transmission serviced and replaced the fluid with Amsoil fluid. Made a huge difference. Doesn’t hunt for gears anymore and the shifts are so much smoother. I dont know if the actual fluid made a difference or if it was low from the factory. I now have 210,000 miles on it with no issues. I replaced the original fluid at about 80,000 miles and then again at 150,000 miles and again at 200,000. All with Amsoil fluids. No issues since the first fluid change.

There is no way around the fact that there are many more components under the hood in a turbocharged engine compartment. That can cost you extra every time you need service or repair. Nissan Frontier is leading USA sales thru early 2024 by a large margin so I guess that speaks loudly about how the buying public views the new Tacomas. Not offering a normally aspirated option anywhere in the pickup line up was a big mistake by Toyota IMO.

Luckily Toyota also included two year (24K) of free maintenance and three year (36K) bumber to bumper and 5 year (60k) powertrain warranty. Not really, Tacoma just launched and they have had some production issues for several weeks which happens when retooling two factories with a new model. Large capacity 4s if balanced have good torque characteristics.
Fewer moving parts and cheaper maintenance.

      2 injectors per cylinder
      Plus turbo
      Plus in some cases hybrid

Sure it has the V6 but only with port injection and no turbo and just 5speed transmission
See if that same truck had a turbo 4 it would be about even
