    It's cute, but forgettable, which is not what Pixar needs right now to get out of their slump. I was at a 3pm show, but the theater was almost empty. This is going to be a loss for Pixar.
    Here is where I nitpick: It makes zero sense for there to be so many water pipes in fire town. Even if it existed before they got there, the water would have been shut off to an abandoned part of town. Also, the fire people can heat and bend metal, so I don't know why they wouldn't crimp and cap the water pipes coming in. There wouldn't be any pressure on the pipes, either. The movie shows that the water is running through a grate in the canals that are even with or below the city. First, is the water source composed of runoff from a drain? Gross. Second, that's gravity fed and so it wouldn't build pressure. Even if it were uphill, liquid head pressure is roughly 1psi per 2 vertical feet, so no pressure is building there. The movie shows a clog, which theoretically could trap water in the fire store and build hydrostatic pressure when heated, but it would fall quickly once released.
    The water pipe thing is bothering me to a level that I know to be irrational, so I typed it here instead of putting it in the video

      Kind of feels like they didn't put nearly as much thought into it as they did Zootopia which seemed to think things out a lot more when it came to the City and how it worked.

      "This is going to be a loss for Pixar. "
      They earned it. Just like Disney is gong to earn an Indie Jones flop. It's going to take a while for the projects in the pipeline to flush out, so I'm predicting a low box office draw for the next couple of years.

      To be honest that doesn't sound like a nitpick. If the movie doesn't care about internal logic to that degree it can really hurt the film overall. I feel this is the main reason so many time travel stories don't work - they either break their own rules whenever it is convenient or make it a point not to tell you the rules so the reveal can happen, even if it doesn't really work. Plus this isn't just a one-off for Pixar. Every single thing about Forky from Toy Story 4 was horrifying. If a child loving something that isn't built as a toy can create a toy then the ramifications of that are HORRIBLE. Are sandcastles toys? How about kids playing with their food? If a kid sits down in the drivers seat of the family car and plays with the wheel does the car now become a toy? Does that mean it has to live a solitary life of waiting in the garage until one day the kid picks up the rake, runs around with it for a few moments, and now 'vroomy' meets 'leafie'?
      I think this sounds like a skip for me, but your review reminded me a lot of Walter Chaw's take on the film: www.filmfreakcentral.net/ffc/2023/06/elemental.html

      @@michaeleverett9091I feel bad laughing at your Toy Story examples, because they are indeed horrifying -- but it's not like we are professional writers whose job it is to think of these things.
      The other thing I couldn't stand about Toy Story 4 is that Woody came off as sanctimonious and annoying, putting everyone in grave danger only to end up going rogue by the end.

    The grim thing is that there was an obvious defense for this kind of thing that movies just can't use anymore: "It's not supposed to be a one-to-one allegory for racism; it's a fantasy that uses a fantastical setting to imagine things in its own way, and tangentially touch on issues like prejudice and racism." But companies like Disney have been so blatantly on-the-nose with their messaging for so long that such an excuse no longer works; a movie like "Elemental" wouldn't have gotten made by a studio like Disney at all without the theme front and center, so any failures of examination become all but impossible to ignore. Oops.

    • @puttinontheritzcrackers3301
      @puttinontheritzcrackers3301 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Zootopia represents this better. All the themes ARE THE SAME. The ideas are so similar. But Zootopia is a fun movie that slips over any of its world building problems because it's fun and has a genuinely interesting mystery. City plumbing and infrastructure issues are not riveting cinema.
      Even if you think Liberal/Progressive/Left analysis of race and racism in society is off or wrong, Zootopia is still a fun buddy cop/odd couple movie. With a genuinely intriguing mystery.
      They literally made a kids movie with a boring adult dinner scene and a main character discussing vague possible career ambitions with strangers.

  • @shadowdramon01
    @shadowdramon01 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    My biggest issue is this movie commits a sin specific to “fantastical racism” where a fantasy race is supposed to be an allegory for an “oppressed minority”, but prejudice against the allegory group is, actually, kinda justified.
    The fire people can burn down the other societies, and unwittingly kill at least the earth people (or at least the ones made of grass and leaves) and water people (who they can boil and evaporate). It’s kinda like X-Men where mutants are meant to be an allegory and the story is all about “can’t we all just get along”, but when most young mutants, upon activating their powers, unwittingly maim, cripple or even kill innocent people, the allegory falls apart. The idea of all the characters being elements wasn’t really thought all the way through is what I’m saying.

      True, but they don’t deserve the persecution and hateful things that get said to them for something they can’t help.
      Not everything is black and white, and that’s why I loved this film.
      Also, Ember wasn’t really dangerous, as her fire just burned the hair off of that one earth element. And later it’s shown that when Ember and Wade compose themselves they can touch and get along

    I can't properly articulate why, but my wife and I loved it. This movie had the feel of classic Pixar movies to me and I was surprisingly emotionally invested. It may be because my wife is Asian and I'm white so it was easy for us to relate to the characters, and for us the romance was secondary to cultural hurdles and growth. We both agreed this movie was not well marketed and we originally didn't have much interest in seeing it, but were glad that we decided to see it.

      Honestly, I never expected my husband to become so emotional while watching a Pixar movie (surprise he even made a comment). As an immigrant myself, this film beautifully portrays the immigrant experience in America and how much pressure my Chinese family puts on me, expectations I can never fully meet. "Elemental" captured my heart, especially with its poignant ending in "The Bow" scene, something I've never experienced in return. The depiction of interracial romance was portrayed flawlessly, showcasing the challenges and beauty of dating someone from a different race. I'm amazed that Pixar was able to create something so relatable to my own life in just a few hours. Unfortunately, it seems like this movie didn't receive the marketing it deserved.

    I honestly, to my surprise, actually enjoyed watching this movie. While not perfect, it's still very fun to watch; and some scenes were emotional enough to touch me. The animation is unique, the story is good, and the characters are fun. And the chemistry between Wade and Ember is pretty believable, because it does take its time to develop it - even if you can tell almost right away. And I suppose their personalities almost match their elements: Ember has trouble with her fiery temper, while Wade tends to be a sympathy cryier. To me, Wade and Emver have one of the most realistic relationships in a Disney movie, because while you can tell there is something between them, they still start off as good friends, and confirm their love near the end of the movie; this becoming a real couple. They say opposites attract, and that's very true in their case - but they also have things in common. The moment when Ember met Wade's family was fun to watch because it showed how far society has come to accepting others; and yes, the game where Wade made Ember cry for the first time was very touching because it what sparked their true feeling for each other.
    It would have been nice to hear more about Wade's father; like what can of man he was, what he did for a living, and what caused their relationship to drift away. It also would have been nice to see more of Clod, he definitely should of had a bigger role. I also wish they explained more of the crack in the dam - did it just get old, or was it caused by something? The part where Ember and Wade have an argument over their differences, that I also wish could of had a bit more attention. I mean, Ember got her say on how she feels, but Wade never really explained his point of view. Maybe he could have told Ember that just because he comes from luxury, he never truly did what he wanted because of everything his father expected of him growing up - and his dying wish was for Wade to find his own path. Also, Wade could have told Ember that the reason his family has money is because of how much work they put into making a life for their families.
    Overall, I did enjoy the movie. And I actually thought that Wade died in the end - but it's Disney; they don't do that. And I'm actually glad they didn't. It would have been nice to see more of Ember and Wade's childhood. Maybe have them cross each other's paths multiple times, but never actually interacted. If there's ever a sequel...I'd watch it. Maybe it could be about Wade and Ember getting married and starting a family.

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It definitely had those high points but you're right that they introduced a lot of ideas and then never went anywhere with them. It's good to have a lot of subplots, but these are just loose ends that don't get tied up. You bring up a good point about wade not getting his say. Honestly, I think wade as a character never gets a say. He's very flat. I realize that I don't have an issue with him being in love immediately, so much as him having no reason to be in love. He doesn't really have a character or part to play, he's more of a plot device.
      This movie had more potential than it executed on

    Greatest movie ever made… probably not. But definitely the cutest, sweetest, most wholesome movie I’ve seen this year so far.
    I personally am getting tired of movies always messing with your expectations and surprising you with every plot point they have, which is why I was overwhelmed with Spiderverse. I enjoyed it just fine, but there was too much happening and the movies always plays these tricks on you. It was ice to just watch a cute, straightforward, wholesome movie.
    I get the “love at first sight” thing can get annoying for some people and they enjoy build up, but sometimes it just needs to work out that way, and I’ll use Titanic as an example. That was very love at first sight with Jack and Rose and it was also a story about classes “mixing.” So… I don’t know. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

    Are you going to see The Flash? I loved it. It has some really good jokes and great performances. (Expat life: As the Japanese are reading the movie, we can echo locate and count how many non-Japanese are in the audience by the random pockets of laughter in the theater.)

    I just watched it, and really loved it! It's super cute and doesn't really look like what you'd expect from the trailer. And what's the problem about a guy falling in love with a girl instantly?? It's very natural and common. And it's natural for a girl to take time with her return feelings.

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The more I think about it, it's not that he falls instantly, it's that he doesn't have any reason to or much character at all. He literally says he doesn't know what he wants to do in life and is bouncing from job to job. It's very much Ember's movie and Wade is more of a plot device. That would be fine if he wasn't half of the main duo of the movie.

    • @DubaiShortsChannel
      @DubaiShortsChannel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gregowen2022 well, it IS Ember's movie, it starts and continues with her story, literally from her birth. Thinking too much about the details sometimes ruins the movie's magic :) Like - did you think how did they actually build the city with all that glass..without fire?. Or did they still have some kind of non-person fire?.. I don't know.. No, don't even think about it! 😂
      As for me, Wade's character is totally likable, he is brave and protective, which are wonderful masculine traits. And you can tell why she falls for him. Why he falls for her? I had an impression that because of how confident and determined she looked for him. She was so passionate about her store and life goal. Maybe I got it wrong.

    My thoughts here are quite lengthy :
    For me, as someone who had immigrant grandparents who too had to make a lot of sacrifices and work hard this film was all the more relatable.
    I genuinely loved this film, it’s easily my favorite Pixar film in a long time, and it still has left an impact me over two weeks after seeing it (I’ve seen it twice now, and my audience both times seemed to love it) something an animated film in general hasn’t done to me in a while either. Between the heart, themes, humor, dialogue, voice acting, animation etc I would probably give this an 8 or even 9/10. Highly recommended for families and kids compared to other ones out right now.
    If I had to make any nitpicks, I would say the third act does have a few cliches (third act breakup, liar revealed, and fake out death).
    For the other point though that’s brought up about how you can understand why certain elements would be feared, I agree it does make sense why they would fear them. But at the same time it doesn’t give anyone the right to be hateful or persecute them, say mean or hurtful things etc. Not everything is black and white (they do say in the film Element City wasn’t made with Fire People in mind) .
    Also this is just a guess, but for the bit when Ember and Wade were able to touch, yet later on when he nearly “dies” I think it was because earlier they were able to compose themselves (I did like the psychological aspect of Ember having to control her “fiery” instincts, gave me Legosi from “Beastars” vibes (as well as of course her conflicted feelings over the business, her father, and Wade as you mentioned) (Legosi also has the inner struggle against his carnivorous instincts). But when they were trapped in that room, she was getting upset and scared of their situation, so that caused her fire to accelerate, as she wasn’t really in control of her emotions in that moment.
    And for the leaky dam, I saw it as the city simply neglecting to upkeep its infrastructure which unfortunately is a real life issue that happens far too often. And for the part when Wade nearly gets swept away by the water, I think it was because the water was not a live being like him.
    PS It is quite unfortunate this gem of a film has underperformed as it has, it deserves all the love and support it can get.

    At this point I don’t think it has to be the biggest movie in the world for Disney/Pixar. They just need something that won’t be universally despised like Lightyear and as completely niche as the period panda movie (who the hell green lit that??!)
    It’s good to just see something a bit truer to old form. Here’s hoping from now on they can have a rethink going forward and get on the right path again. Elio actually looks really really good imo and could be a winner for them just on early looks..
    Have you seen the trailer for Elio yet Greg?

      @gregowen2022  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this wasn't a masterpiece, but compared to the last two, it looks amazing. If Pixar gets back to classic story telling and polishes the execution a bit, they are showing that they can still have potential. I agree on turning red, how the hell did that see the light of day?
      I did see the Elio trailer before the movie. It looks really cute! The various alien races should provide plenty of opportunities for odd couple comedy. My only concern is what is earth on trial for? Are we going to be lectured about how terrible we are because people treat each other poorly while the civilized aliens all get along in a peaceful utopia?

      @@gregowen2022: I get that, I know it’s a children’s movie but I hope they keep it broader than just US social issues. But there’s a lot to live for and that there’s good and hopeful things about us is the message I’d like to get from this movie. We’ll see, I know we all just want good entertaining films with no pandering after years of being hammered on the head with messaging. I dislike that Elemental is simplified and diminished as an off brand Zootopia. Beyond the love story, Elemental focuses generational trauma and the pressures felt by an immigrant child. Ember feels burdened and wants to sacrifice her own dreams in order to repay her father’s sacrifice of leaving their home country for a better life. She learns to reconcile with these feelings and finds the courage to tell this to her father, who is finally ready to retire. I see myself in Ember and my parents in her parents. I also love the way she bowed (drawing from Korean culture) to her father, who never received acceptance from his own father. I agree with your take on the issue with Elemental trying to tackle prejudice is it's too far removed from humanity. Yes, there is prejudice against fire people. But also it's shown that if they fall into water, they die. If they trip into wood people, the wood people die (ok, that's not shown, but it's implied.) So there's very, very, very logical reasons for there to be separate areas for these people! They will die or murder by accident!

I mean, I find city water inspection as fascinating as the next guy, but there is no next guy and I don’t find it fascinating. That said, my nephew loves bright colours so this might be a great film for him. In any case though, we’re probably going to wait until it’s on Disney+.

    haven't seen it personally yet but, at least from what you've said here and I've heard elsewhere, this is probably the first movie released in a while that sounds like it's actually trying to say something unifying rather than divisive. While it's hard to put into words, it's one of those things where you can typically tell if a movie is trying to push *_the message_* and is being intentionally divisive, or is actually trying to say something good. It's sort of like how the Mandalorian got praised because it was the first Star Wars media in a long time that didn't feel like it actively hated it's own franchise. Could be wrong of course (as you mention I'll probably wait to watch it streamed or something) but that's just something I've noticed.

    Glad to hear it was alright! also cool theres a bit of subversion with how it isnt that she is forced to take over but wants to live up to expectations herself. The physically showing the racial divide is yea... not good. Think they wanted to show there was actually warrant for this instead of just unjust hate but that just makes it justified. Guess they wanted it to come around to the end where even if u do get harmed, it's all good if u are happy or something. The director said this was a personal love letter to his parents and of his own background so glad some of those feelings shined thru even if a bit generic and expected since it is a common story

    • @gregowen2022

      Yeah, it definitely could have been done better. From what I've seen Avatar handled this better, with each tribe having a bent towards a personality centered around their element. When the characters find out that the other tribes are just people like them, it makes more sense because it's a personality clash, they aren't physically different and incompatible.

    It might have had the lowest opening for a Pixar movie, but it had long legs so it won't finish up as Pixar's lowest grossing movie. Of course it would have to earn a lot more to get over its budget.

    So basically every other recent Pixar film that does the same thing as good dinosaur or at best onward. Dragged out stories where most at best try to justify the final portion of a movie which is never a good thing and defeats the point of a film

    I had the exact same feelings as you with this movie. My 3-year-old likes the colors and the music, so we've seen it several times on Disney Plus. The racial thing is noticeable but not too in your face that it's painful to watch.

    Having just watched it a few hours ago, I will say this - I enjoyed the movie, but it could be a better film if they fleshed out some aspects. The story is messy in its delivery, and I felt that the "conflict" wasn't really done that well. In particular, in an odd way, the movie really needed to show MORE "fire racism" than it did. There were a few moments here and there, but it did not really carry the message that the fire people were THAT HATED for a story about supposed racism. Still, on the plus side, it's a beautiful movie with some excellent effects. Like, for real. Just the fire and water depictions were on point.
    All in all, it's a pretty film that could have used more substance (seriously, for a movie about four elements, they really only showed mostly fire and water).

    It feels like there must have been a frantic editing room on this one - and they just barely salvaged an ok movie at the end.
    I thought there was an implication of laziness, corruption and incompetence within the upper classes and bureaucrats running the city, which makes some thematic sense. The pipes were in the fire community because they were living in dilapidated and repurposed water people buildings. The city should have built more appropriate housing instead of just applying a band-aid solution of turning off the water, but why would they put much effort into preventing a flood when they are physically unaffected by it?
    A reflection of people well-meaning on an individual level but selfish and ignorant as a society in general felt like the background commentary .
    Couldn't help but notice that the (brown) earth people had next to no voice in the movie whatsoever...
    All that said, the romance was touching and the ending with the dad and the bow was heartfelt.

      And that’s what we need more of. More (great) originals like this film and less of sequels / remakes that no one asks for and ones that pale in comparison.
      I mean do we really need Toy Story 5? The fourth one was alright but wasn’t that needed.
      Granted I do think Inside Out and Zootopia 2 have a lot of potential.

    It was ok 6/10. There was no antagonist in the movie besides literally water.
    Great graphics, but the story was dull because there was no bad guy.
    Disney put , racism, patriachy, gender ideology and diversity by having casting based on colour not skill.
    Compare this to trolls where fox spent almost half the ammount of money and had 5 major stars in leading roles. It doesn't cost 200 million to have no name actors voice a movie.
    Trolls is now onto its 3rd movie and many side productions.
    This movie wont make a profit. Because they put ideology above merit.
