  • We're looking at the infamous Bessarion station today: despite its low ridership, it's still a cute station to look at, and its future is bright!

I find it just soooo remarkable that they made the Station so Damned Big even though they were fully aware that it will likely never have ridership usage that even comes close to justifying its size...Why wasn't it made more like the Danforth Stations such as Chester or Donlands or Greenwood etc...The Station is just a Grandiose Waste...

Part of the reason why development around Bessarion has been so slow is because they've had to wait years after the dismantling of the Canadian Tire warehouse that used to be nearby. It's similar to when gas stations shut down: they have to weight for the chemicals in the ground to die away.

It will be interesting to see the ridership change of this station when more condos come in. However, residential development is not always the largest generator of ridership, you need both commerical and residential in a dense enough space to warrant a subway stop usually.

Ahhh, poor Bessarion Station. Glad you guys paid a visit. Here is a link to an old video from 2013 called "Finding Bessarion'. A short documentary about the station and the Sheppard Line in general. th-cam.com/video/6pa6eXErmmw/w-d-xo.html

I worked with someone who worked with the company that built the Sheppard line. She said they could have had 2 more stations if they hadn't spent so much on artwork.

One thing I noticed about playing cities: skyline is that the longer I make subway/LRT lines, the more ridership along the line each station receives. Even though it's just a game, I like it for it's traffic model. If the Shepherd subway was extended to Scarborough Town Centre as original designed, or even out to Kennedy, I'm sure there would be a growth in ridership.

The people in those condos will all drive.

They probably will, but only if it's actually convenient/necessary to drive. If they're going to work downtown, heading to the airport, or to midtown, they'll definitely be taking the subway. If they're going to Costco, deep into Scarborough/Durham/Peel, they're definitely driving.

I binge watched the Station Focus series and I definitely learned something from the information gathered in these videos, especially the ones with low ridership. Perhaps you could do Dufferin station in the future? The area has a few points of interest and I still remember what the station looked like before it got a huge makeover from 2010 to 2014.

Honestly I think that the line is a big mistake Andy should have have a lrt running from Sheppard Yonge all the way to STC
