Yeah, I've been away for a while, so what?
Let's talk about charity shops. They're nice, aren't they? You go in and you'll find something old that someone didn't want, and walk out with a sick deal. You might find an old book on gardening, or a nice selection of plates, or even some furniture. You might even find some old cds that have been lying in someone's cupboard for the better part of a generation.
And this is where we find ourselves today. I walked into Oxfam (the one I go to has these awesome chocolate bars that they sell, it's great) and went to their music section, just perusing. I didn't expect to find anything, when I stumbled upon this yellowed old cd with a fun looking cover of a guy biting his thumb off. Looked it up, and it's not on youtube! Nice one. So I buy it (they're expensive in there but I've learned not to dally on this kind of thing as these records can go away and never surface again) and forget about it for a few months until I realize, "Maybe I should get back into the TH-cam side of things, go back to uploading some more music". At this point I had no idea what kind of ride I was in for with this record.
So I'm not that experienced with hardcore punk - I know it's one of those things that has a lot of history, but I've never been curious enough to poke at it. By all accounts it's the good shit but until now I've never been there. So listening to this album was an interesting experience. Lucky One Dies First goes fucking hard and has no mercy. The songs are fast, smash your head in, and are effortlessly concise. The longest song is 2:32 minutes and the shortest is 8 seconds. The vocalist is screaming his fucking head off, the drummer is hitting it like the drumkit fucked his wife and the guitarist and bassist are murdering the fuck out of those strings. Every song feels more volitile than the last, and every one kicks and more ass. I would actually say I feel a certain extreme metal influence, certainly Grindcore has touched this but certain evil plucks of the lead guitar also suggest a black metal influence.
By the end of the last track, the lead singer sounds particularly unhinged and like he's drowning in vodka as he screams an anthem-like chant, "WE LIVE! WE LEARN! WE CRASH! WE BURN! BUT I'M! STILL! HERE!" This entire record lasts 17 minutes approximately, ending on gnarled feedback and the echoes of a dying chant. It is an absolute whirlwind of hatred and disaffection, and probably has resulted in at least one person getting arrested for speeding. I highly recommend giving it a listen... And am sad that their claim that they are still here rings untrue. Not that they're dead or something, I don't know that - But this was their only record. I deeply recommend listening to it if you have even a passing interest in punk, you can name your price or download for free off of Bandcamp, it doesn't matter which since they seem to have disbanded and put it up for free on there.
One last thing before we close out. There are a number of band names printed on the inside of the CD I got hold of. I'm mostly putting this here for my own sake so I can track these down at some point, but here's the band names they listed:
Sombulence - Ed Wood - Witch Cult - I.T.D. - Housefires - Senator - Offender - Attack! Vipers! - Belligerance - You Me and the Atom Bomb - For This World Is Hollow And These Hands Have Touched the Sky (nice Star Trek reference) - Skin For a Canvas - FR...F! - Watashi Calcutecs - Bearded Youth Quest - Capsized - Bigtopp - Danny Wright - Shipton - Sleep Centre - No Coast - Let it Die - Crazy Arm - The SLM - The Long Haul - Run, Walk! - A Wilhelm Scream - Cerebral Ballzy - Lives at Sea - Calm Before Chaos - On Flight Movie - Matt Black & the Emulsions - Whitemare - Palm Reader - Dashwood - Grappler
PS - I put all the lyrics in all-caps with an exclamation mark at the end of every line because I felt like that was the intended way they should be read. Enjoy!

LYRICS:
EVERYDAY'S THE SAME
WAKING UP, FEELING EMPTY, GOING INSANE!
MY LIFE'S GOING NOWHERE!
OUR JOBS ARE SHIT! WE CAN'T PAY OUR BILLS!
EVERYTHING GOES WRONG AGAINST OUR WILL!
WE'RE GOING OUT TONIGHT, WE DON'T FUCKING CARE!
LET'S NECK OUR DRINKS AND SMOKE OUR SHARE!
I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING FROM TAKING PILLS TO FIGHTS,
STILL MAKES NO DIFFERENCE WHAT TIME I SLEEP AT NIGHT!
MY LIFE'S GOIN' NOWHERE!
I WALK AROUND IN A FUCKING DAZE!
I WORK MY HANDS WHEN I GET TO PLAY!
WE'RE GIGGING TONIGHT, WE DON'T FUCKING CARE!
THE STAGE IS OURS, THERE'S NO ROOM TO SHARE!
YOU TAKE YOURS!
I'LL TAKE MINE!
YOU TAKE YOURS!
TAKE IT ALL!
YOU TAKE YOURS!
I'LL TAKE MINE!
YOU TAKE YOURS!
BRING IT ALL!
