Anything heavier than Hellium on the periodic table is a metal. Oxygen is a metal. Carbon, so oil is a metal. Plastic is a metal. Everything is a metal. Even Nickleback.
As a metalhead I completely understand your point of view on most of these albums and I respect your opinion. We all like different things but god damn it, did you say Layne Staley doesn't change his style on "Dirt"???
Lolz my great grandmothers review of Dirt. To be fair didn't like it when it came out but of course its way way way up there. Proof that the best music only is understood after several listens.
Metalheads seem to hate it when people say this, yet never have a good rebuttal? I'm very open to liking metal music, in fact I really wish that I did. But I just can't get into the bands where the singer is screaming the entire time non-stop. I'm fine with some screaming, especially if it builds up to it as an emotional climax. But when it's just screaming for the sake of it, all the way through, I just can't see the appeal. It loses it's impact, I guess? Like, I feel like maybe I just need someone to explain it the right way for it to click with me, cuz I think I must be missing something. But metalheads are always so gatekeepy and intentionally obtuse about it.
@@amiccus_ I've been get deeper into metal lately and my rebuttal is that genres like death metal focus on being intense, pummeling and brutal, because that's the appeal, it makes you headbang, it's referred as an extreme metal genre for that reason. On the other hand, the vocals usually stick to guttural sounds and the variety usually comes from the instrumental (in the case of bands like Death, but most death metal is extreme, over the top and doesn't feature any melodic elements). If you want more variety and clean singing, look into melodeath or just don't listen to extreme metal. And to be clear, there's thousands of metal genres and fusions, there's even bands and genres that don't feature gutturals or screaming (look symphonic metal or bands like Nightwish, that's usually clean classical singing).
The screaming is no big deal actually. It's just 'cause he got his hairy nutsack caught in his low B string because it was tuned down to A! No big deal, it happens all the time. "It's part of our sound, maaaaan!" 🤘🤘🤘
@@amiccus_ Metal haters have very little or zero appreciation for the skill of the musicians and always seem to focus entirely on "sCrEaMiNg HuR dUr". Metal also isn't like pop. In pop there's a BIG focus on the singer and their being the "lead" of the song. Often times in metal, probably the majority of the time, the singer/singer's voice is another instrument, just the same as the guitars and drums. I'm also speaking as someone whose favourite genre is thrash metal (Megadeth, Slayer), and who also fucking despises ACTUAL screaming/grunting metal (I think one genre is called sludgecore).
@@nizz0matic307 I don't think best is really the most accurate term. More like, the most known or most influential. Aside from a few that I haven't heard of, pretty much all of these picks are exactly what I would've expected and probably what I would recommend to someone getting into metal.
Maybe he'll like their Self Titled album since that's their sludiest album, also funny him saying Dirt is the same song over & over again because that's exactly what I hear when I listen to Electric Wizard(still good though), like how is Godsmack & Down in a Hole or Would even close to the same song? Crazy take.
@@ThEmB0nEz uh i'll agree that his take on Dirt is a bit crazy but so is yours that AIC is anywhere close to sludge lmao... and i'll also say that electric wizard is doom, not sludge. doom and sludge are not dissimilar, but they're not interchangeable either. just an FYI
@ Their self titled album is their sludgiest album that's a fact, I never said they were sludge but they do have some Sludgey songs , I mean they have a song called Sludge Factory & it's heavy AF. Acid Bath & AIC get compared a lot for a reason...
@@dark3rthanshadows Layne's quality as a singer isn't what I was referring to. It's that the guy specifically said that his vocals stay the same when the same could be said about James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine's vocals (also from what I've heard from Chino but I'm not as well versed in Deftones as the other bands)
The actual f**k. How on earth can you listen to Them Bones and say it sounds the same as Rooster, or Down in a Hole, or Would? Different in style, tone, rhythm. Bizarre review.
I think it's a case of not liking the vocalist. Which is a garbage take tbf, but usually when people say all the songs "sound the same" as a "critique" it tends to be a case of not digging the vocalist because there is no world where Them Bones and Rooster sound the same musically.
I’m a metal head and I agree with him, no it doesn’t sound exactly the same the whole album, but the overall style, tone and vibe does not vary a whole lot throughout the whole album. I completely get how after 5 or 6 songs having enough of that sound, because it’s there’s little variation within the album.
@Mr.InbetweenFX Fair enough, I chalk it up to it something simply not being your vibe. A lot of people feel that way about any given band. Deftones people will say all sounds the same. System of a Down too. Most people will listen to 2-3 Primus songs and say, "Yeah, that's enough of that." Because it's just not their digs, so move on. No harm, no foul. I like the weirder niche styles of metal myself and find a lot of the 80s glam, speed, virtuoso metal to be rather soulless but other people worship every day at those altars. If I were to say it all sounds the same, I think that would be a disingenuous "take" and more about me "taking a shot" at a style I don't like than giving an unbiased opinion. Just my $.02
@@Mr.InbetweenFX And not to downplay your original take which is totally valid, but I also think the fact that much of Alice in Chains catalogue heavily features minor as opposed to major chord progressions can turn off some people. There's a lot of people out there that straight up have an aversion to "sad" sounds.
Go back to Symbolic after listening to more metal. With subgenres like death metal it's very hard to appreciate it if you aren't really familiar with other types of metal, people typically work their way up in heaviness when getting into metal.
Symbolic is not even a death metal album IMO....it's extreme metal/prog. From that era there is death metal that's technically good, I'd recommend stuff like Suffocation.
@@g-man47441) extreme metal is not a genre. Is an umbrella term, given that you can name death metalz black metal and other genres with it. 2) is pretty much death metal. Just a different kind. The only prog song is Perennial quest
@@joaquinlezcano2372 its not death metal, it's literally just prog metal with death metal vocals. listen to literally any old school death metal and the music is completely different. even if you're hell bent on calling it pure death metal for some ignorant reason, you can't say that you'll like death metal if you like it, since even death's earlier pure death metal albums are totally different. it's not a very good example of death metal, cause it's nothing like 99% of death metal.
@@nizz0matic307 I never said it's was pure death metal. I literally said it was "different kind". Which means that it's pretty unique. Prog metal or prog death s stuff like Focus by Cynic and The sound of perseverance. This isn't quite like it. Not really tech death too. Is more melodic death metal. That's why I say it's DIFFERENT.
@@joaquinlezcano2372 the comment was about appreciating death metal though. symbolic would make you appreciate progressive metal, which i'm not into and can't comment on, but since i listen to almost death metal exclusively, i can say symbolic isn't going to make you appreciate it. also the guy hated symbolic anyway why help him with anything, he doesn't like metal, he isn't going to like literally any death metal or thrash or melodic death metal or anything based on his tastes, he should stick to whatever he likes which i have no idea what that is cause this vid only came in my feed cause he put metal in the title.
@@billhicks8 not always. And not with every person. I’ve been listening to rock and metal all my life. A little blues too, but mainly metal. The heaviest I can listen to is slipknot. Or lyrics wise Linkin Park.
I think the problem that I had when first listening to death metal was that’s there’s not many genres that capture the same heaviness . I would recommend revisiting death after listening to more prog/thrash metal. Once it clicks, you’ll never look back!
@@Evojo42 or not ...I LOVE early Death but after "Human" they lost me, and Symbolic never clicked with me, been into metal since the mid-90s so I guess it'll never happen for me.
Death is one of my favourite bands, and Symbolic is one of my favourite albums. Hope you can grow to appreciate it one day, but love the fact you liked Electric Wizard.
Symbolic was my introduction to death metal. I haven't been able to stomach harsh vocals before listening to Death, now I absolutely love growls and shrieks.
@@GubernatorMDSymbolic was my introduction and really one of the only albums/bands of the genre I enjoyed. I enjoy a lot of metal, but most of the more extreme ends I’ve found out really aren’t my taste.
The way you talked about Symbolic reminds me of my first experience with extreme metal. It's an acquired taste - if you listen to more metal, your ears will be able to adjust to the stuff that was initially too heavy, and then you'll have a whole new world of amazing music to explore :D
Some albums from different genres to get introduced to: -Iron Maiden: Powerslave and Somewhere in time (heavy metal) -Judas Priest: British steel and Screaming for vengeance (heavy metal) -Trouble: Psalm 9 (trad. doom metal) Pentagram: Self titled album (trad. doom metal) Manilla Road: Crystal logic (US power metal) -Helloween: Keeper of the seven keys part I and II (power metal) -Motley Crue: Shout at the devil (Glam metal) -Faith no more: The real thing and Angel dust (alternative metal) -Voivod: Nothingface (technical thrash) and The outer limits (prog metal) -Dream Theater: Images and words and Train of thought (prog metal) -Helmet: Betty (alternative metal) -Tool: Aenima (alternative metal) and Lateralus (alternative/prog metal) -Corrossion of conformity: Deliverance (stoner metal) -Melvins: Houdini (sludge metal) -Bathory: Hammerheart (viking metal). Now into some personal recommendations: If you liked White Pony, I highly recommend you The great cold distance by Katatonia. Terrific album If you liked Paranoid, you might check out: Budgie - Never turn your back on a friend Judas Priest - from "Sad wings of destiny" to "Stained Class" Motorhead - Overkill If you liked Rage against the machine, you may want to try Time's up by Living Colour. Or their album Stain
2 things, i think seventh son of a seventh son is much more accessible to non-metal listeners, also as i am isnt an album, youre thinking of train of thought ( and i think scenes from a memory is more accessible than train of thought)
@@prismix0870fair enough: 1) while I agree Seventh son of a seventh son is pretty digerible, Somewhere in time aims a lot to have the classic structure of verse-chorus-verse-chorus. The songs are meant to be more sing-along than other Iron Maiden albums. But Seventh son may work out as well 2) thanks for their correction on Dream Theater. HOWEVER, I don't really see Scenes from a memory as "beginner friendly". For two reasons: for one, it's a hardcore concept album, in the same spirit of Dark side of the moon. You can like a couple of tracks, but it's very difficult to enjoy them alone, as it's meant to be listened in its entirety. Which may overwhelm the new listener, with the long songs and stuff. And second, because it has that hardcore Dream Theater style of long solos and passages. Again, the new listener may be overwhelm by it. In comparison, Train of thought is one of the most grounded DT albums, in the sense that the songwriting (both structurally and lyrically) are more straight to the point. Octavarium would fit that criteria too, though is more because it has some non metal songs.
I’m honestly surprised Electric Wizard is what he said was his favorite lol, during RATM he was like “it’s not that heavy which makes me able to get into it easier” but also his favorite one is the heaviest album out of the ones that he listened to lmaoo Edit: also btw I heavily recommend checking out more SOAD all of their stuff is great (their self titled is their best album after Toxicity imo), and also I recommend checking out the band “Nine Inch Nails”, they’re absolutely amazing and the 2 albums I recommend the most is “The Downward Spiral” and “The Fragile” (The Fragile has more melodic takes on it where as The Downward Spiral is almost strictly a metal album with “Hurt” and “Piggy” being the exceptions, so you might be more into The Fragile but either way I’m sure you’ll probably enjoy them because they’re great)
honestly surprised you liked feedbacker, i'd say its one of the hardest boris albums to get throught, hope you have fun listening (also if u get a chance, i highly recommend amplifier worship, it's sluge metal and since dopethrone was your favorite, you might like it)
@@KyleReidMu feedbacker part 2 has to be the best guitar solo of all time boris has one of the all time post rock albums too with flood they have a stacked discog worth diving into

It's always interesting to see people who usually aren't into metal actually give it a fair shot. I'm a firm believer that anyone can be a fan if they actually took a minute to do research, there's a HUGE list of genres to pick from so depending on your usual musical interest I'm sure you'll find the right bands that'll work! Awesome video, i hope you can make another one with more bands! Also (just FYI) Alice In Chains is more grunge than metal. And hey, we'll get you into Death soon enough! Try their other albums Human and Sound of Perseverance! Think you might like those a bit more!
ok yeah sybolic isnt exactly a beginner album but sound of perseverance is a lot more digestable. i also HIGHLY recommnend mezmerize if toxicity was a little too heavy cuz my friend said the same thing about toxicity but loved mezmerize
SOP is way harder to get into, the songs are just insanely long and the music is somewhat more technical, symbolic is simple and catchy compared to it. if he got bored listening to symbolic which to me is literally as catchy and easy listening as any radio metal, his brain cannot handle the longer songs of SOP he's turning it off after 2 songs
hell naw bro, tsop is too prog, the best thing that he could do is maybe, start with swansong which is basically death n roll, then start getting heavier with venom or possessed bc overall, death albums are hard to listen if u are not used to hear fast tempos , strange time sigantures and a growling vocals
@@arransk maybe mostly but i dont even listen to death metal like at all except for death but sop has songs like voice of the soul and spirit crusher that i liked, but overall i think sop is probably my favorite that ive listened to from them
@Bowmanfan48-88 mine too, but it is metal. Not to be that guy that says “grunge wasn’t a genre, it was a scene”, but it was. Up until grunge was a label, the entire band was considered as metal, and would go on tour with other metal bands like slayer and anthrax. Jerry maintained that they are metal. Most of the songs on dirt are blatantly metal, hell, angry chair is basically a black sabbath song. Definitely metal
@ it’s grunge. Alice In Chains is grunge just they are a bit heavier than nirvana and Pearl Jam. They revolutionized the sound. I understand it has a more metal feel but it’s not really metal
LOVE seeing people's first experiences with metal. Good video, man. Don't blame you for having a hard time with Death, death metal in of itself can be challenging to get into, I myself had a hard time getting into it for the longest time. What eventually eased me into the genre (after like, a year and a half of listening to every thrash metal album I could find) were melodic death metal bands like Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, At The Gates and Arch Enemy; and the beautiful insanity that is Strapping Young Lad. Melodic death metal can be far more accessible to listen to given, well, it's predominant taste for melody-driven tracks and sophisticated guitar work that won't entirely drown you out with beefy guitar tones. That said, in most death metal subgenres, growls tend to be the predominant vocals, and can be a bit of an acquired taste. That's where Strapping Young Lad came in for me. Strapping Young Lad is NOT Melodic death metal, but rather this insane array of influences from death, thrash, black, and predominantly industrial metal. An album of theirs like City is a sonic onslaught that doesn't let up, but what really helped me get into them was Devin Townsend's vocals. Devin never quite learned how to growl, so he instead settled for these fry screams that can be just as brutal as your average death growl, which he also incorporated with incredibly tasteful singing that borders in operatic at times. SYL could really ease you into these heavier metal vocals. Try to give these a chance when you can. They did wonders for me and I hope they do the same to you. Also, in case you want lighter stuff, try giving Devin's solo albums a chance. Stuff like Accelerated Evolution, Infinity, Terria, Ocean Machine and Synchestra will change your life for the better.
I got into metal a couple of years ago and it has completely changed my life and the way I listen to music. Was into hip-hop for most of my teenage years because that was kinda the popular thing but I really fell out of love with it as I got older and more independent. Metal has gotten me back into playing the drums, and I started playing bass guitar too this year. I met some awesome people and have been to a couple amazing shows that were some of the best experiences of my life. I am so glad I opened up my mind and started exploring a genre with so much musicality and frankly, imho, a lot more musical talent than what I was listening to previously. I appreciate you being open-minded and showing willingness to explore something you were kinda adverse too before, and ofcourse its completely fine and logical if you don't like everything (or even most of it). I think more people should take this as an example and explore genres they normally don't listen too. It might just change your life.
It’s almost like I wrote this. I still love hip hop but never really listen to new releases & stick to what I know, with metal I have discovered so much since covid & continue to find new gems every week. How did you meet new people though? I have nobody with a shared metal taste, I have one friend who likes some but wish I knew more.
Interesting vid. These are objectively some of the best metal albums ever made, but not necessarily the best albums to get someone into metal. Would love to see a vid with a list of albums like that.
"Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form" by Crowbar is another great album, but idk if he'd be ready for it. Crowbar is ridiculously heavy, that shit will shatter every bone in his body.
As a metalhead, some of these takes are so valid. I can listen to two Alice and Chains songs and then I get sick of them. I'm super into Death now, but when I was first introduced to their stuff aside from Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy, I didn't really get it at first. I'm glad you liked some of them to an extent! I genuinely had never heard of Boris, so I will check that album out.
As someone who also didn’t love Symbolic, I’d definitely recommend trying out The Sound of Perseverance. I feel like you’d enjoy that once since it’s not always running at 1000%, hell there’s even an acoustic song thrown in there
Electric Wizard is top class stoner doom. I would recommend you listen to Sleep’s Holy Mountain, and Bonzilla’s amerijuanican. Not as heavy but they have the same feel
@@perfectelectricman For all the controversy and hate they get from trve-kultists and whoever, I've often seen them credited for getting people into metal.
ay man been here since 2k subs, I remember asking u to give metal another chance on some video cuz it is such a huge genre with so many different sounds, and I am so glad you actually gave those albums a good chance, always great listening to u rant on music, here are some albums I recommend based on what you felt abt those albums as a lifelong metal head: Epicus doomicus matelicus - candlemass, its classic doom metal since u like electric wizard and sabbath, i really think u will enjoy the evil wizard doom metal vibe from this one. black sabbath - black sabbath, their first self titled album is peak evil riffage imo, it is lighter than other albums it feels like evil folk album with metal instruments, I love it. Shogun - trivium, now idk if you would like that one but I wanted to recommend an album from the early 200s early metalcore-ish space, like killswitch engage, bullet for my valentine, etc, and shogun in particular is named like trivium's metallica album essentially, so it feels like the best point of entry to this particular flavor of metal. Where owls know my name - rivers of nihil, in my opinion one of the best albums to ever exist, period. it is progressive death metal, very dynamic, has so many cool ideas, I feel like its a combination of the few things u liked abt the death album so yea. it's fine if u dislike them all, but I can assure u will e glad u gave these bad bois a shot, have a good one bro!
A great album that is not discussed often is Language by The Contortionist. Incredibly engaging listen, and a full rainbow of sounds and emotions. Also surprised to see there isn't much metalcore here. I think that's the easiest starting point to get into the heavier sounds. Ascendancy by Trivium, The Poison by Bullet for My Valentine, The End of a Heartache by KSE. Groovier rhythms and catchy choruses make for an easier listen will still being heavy.
I resonate with this video as I thought I hated metal before I got into Dopethrone after which I got way into early Sabbath (you didn’t mention my favorite track on Paranoid and the least metal track “Planet Caravan”). I also recommend Black Sabbath’s debut, Sleep’s Holy Mountain and Witchcult Today by Electric Wizard.
i have been a die-hard metalhead fan for a few years now, and as much as i appreciate people trying to get into metal, you don't need to make yourself listen to a genre you don't like.
I would revisit Dirt. It takes awhile for an album to settle in. All of the songs are brilliant and Layne has more power, range and emotion than 99.9% of vocalists who have ever walked the earth
As a metalhead I wanna say Im glad you decided to give the genre a shot, if you do decide to pick guitar back up I highly reccomend learning some Black Sabbath riffs (especially Paranoid), trust me
Loved this. Was surprised your favourite was Dopethrone but despite being one of the heaviest metal albums I know, its actually heavy in a pretty surprisingly accessible way, unlike, say, Phyllomedusa, so it makes a lotta sense.
you should listen to Cowboys From Hell, City Of Evil, Waking The Fallen, Show No Mercy, and Number Of The Beast. All of them are great albums (also they might get you closer to having a good take on Symbolic)
Duuuude, Toxicity was the first full album that I had on my mp3 player in middle school. Listened to it all the way through on the way to and from school every day to avoid interacting with the other kids on my bus. I remember that it took a while for me to come around to really enjoying it. At first, I was interested in it because it was much louder than the other songs and drowned out all the noise around me and let me have a space for just myself. It's a huge stepping stone in my life musically, politically, and personally. EASILY one of my desert island records. Glad you came around as well! Symbolic is sick though, lol
Despite the crazy takes throughout the video, I commend you for giving Metal a try, expanding your knowledge on it and exploring some of the most memorable albums in the genre.
i think the repeat listening is probably what soured dirt and rust in peace which is understandable, i'd recommend revisiting after a while and reevaluating because sometimes taking time away from an album can change your opinion also, i'm surprised you didn't mention would? in your standouts for dirt, easily one of my favorite aic songs
I really appreciate this video!!! So many people saying oh how can you think X Y and Z without realising enjoyment of music is subjective :) it's always nice hearing the perspective of a non-metalhead on this stuff!
Metal is a very diverse genre of music. For example there are Metal genres I love, Metal genres I hate, Metal genres I just can’t get into, and Metal genres where I like only some stuff. If you’re looking at getting into Metal, it depends on what you’re already listening to. If someone is a Rap fan, I can recommend genres like Nu-Metal/Rap Metal, Funk Metal, Alternative Metal, Industrial Metal, even Groove Metal, those genres might be more up your street and easier to listen to. If someone likes Electronic or Dance music, I can recommend genres like Industrial Metal, Alternative Metal, and maybe some Groove Metal, would be a good start. If someone likes Punk music, I can recommend genres like Thrash Metal, Crossover Thrash, Metalcore, Deathcore, maybe even some Grindcore and Black Metal if they like harsher and faster music, all of that would be good starters for that person. If someone likes Classical music, I can recommend Symphonic Metal, Power Metal, Gothic Metal, and Progressive Metal, as good starters for that person. If someone likes a bit of Alternative Rock or Hard Rock, I can recommend Nu-Metal, Alternative Metal, Industrial Metal, Sludge Metal, Stoner Metal, Groove Metal, maybe even Hair Metal, as good starters. If someone likes Prog and Experimental music, I can recommend Progressive Metal, Djent, Funk Metal, Post Metal, or Avant Garde Metal, as good starters. If someone likes Indie music, tbh I could only recommend Post Black Metal/Atmospheric Black Metal, or maybe even Post Metal, as maybe a good start. If someone likes Blues music, I can recommend Stoner Metal, Doom Metal, Sludge Metal, and maybe even some Atmospheric Black Metal, as for good starters. If someone likes Jazz music, I can recommend Progressive Metal, Avant Garde Metal, and maybe even Funk Metal, as good starters.
I think I might have some recommendations for you based on your current taste. First, since you're seeming to enjoy SOAD a bit more now, listen to Daron and Serj's other projects. Serj has his solo music and Daron is also in Scars on Broadway, which is basically System of a Down 2 Tyrada is a really cool Polish thrash band, very unknown but groovy as hell You might be at the point where I could recommend Korn to you. Start with the self titled album and work your way through their discography. For the sludgiest of sludge metal, I would recommend Buster by Admiral Angry. 47 minutes of a terminally sick man's rage against existence. Just for funsies, give Infant Annihilator a spin :)
It was hard for me to get into Death at the start but as I got to know what the lyrics were about I just started loving it. Definitely one of my favourite bands right now
The great thing about metal, is that I'm not into ANY of these bands, and there's still a place for me. It's such a wide genre that there's basically something for everyone. :)
@@mortuarymax Dude, shit like this is exactly why a lot of people avoid metal. Because metal fanbases always have their heads so far up their own asses. It's blatantly cringe. Do you want people to like it or not?? Or do you just get a kick out of being a douchebag?
It's hard to get a grasp of such a diverse genre without context and without listening to a wider variety. At least for me the majority of your picks aren't albums that I personally like. I like rust in peace, toxicity, white pony. Love Symbolic . The others either I like a little or just don't care for. I would definitely consider myself a metalhead as well, but this is just testament to how diverse the genre is. There are so many subgenres that sound completely different to each other. My personal favourite sub genre didn't feature on any of these albums (metalcore), I'd really recommend listening to As Daylight Dies by Killswitch engaged or Ascendency By Trivium. I'd also recommend giving Avenged Sevenfold a listen to, they are a great band to get into metal and span across a lot of subgenres between each of the albums (and I'm bias because they are my favourite band.) Going straight into albums like Symbolic isn't going to work, it sounds dumb but having the context of other metal songs makes this album so good. I personally play guitar so I love the guitar work and how experimental some of the album is, it isn't for everyone but I do think being adjust to metal helps. Hope this ramble sort of helped. My overall point is even some metalheads don't like any of these albums, and I don't think they are testament to what metal is as a whole. And If you couldn't be arsed reading any of this GIVE AVENGED SEVENFOLD A LISTEN, listen to any of these albums: Waking the Fallen, City of Evil, Avenged Sevenfold (self titled) and/or Nightmare.
Stoked to see that you liked Dopethrone! Their album Come My Fanatics has even more of that rattle-your-brain quality, but imo that album has a stronger focus on creating this evil atmosphere instead of Dopethrone's catchy riffs. Here are some other (mostly) newer albums that are more diverse than RYM's top picks: All Them Witches - Lightning at the Door (2016, sp00ky hard rock and blues) Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley (1994, stoner/desert, my strongest recommendation, probably a big inspiration for Dopethrone) Motorhead - Overkill (1979, proto-thrash) Belushi Speedball - What, Us Worry? (2022, thrash with lots of spongebob and dbz refernces and few guitar solos) Doom 2016 / Doom Eternal OST (industrial? just a bunch of heavy riffs and synths) Rammstein - Mutter (2001, industrial, scary german men, must-listen if you like the DOOM OSTs) Peeling Flesh - The G Code (2024, slam w/ Memphis and Houston rap influences) Jesus Piece - Only Self (2018, metallic hardcore / beatdown)
Lotta solid takes. I was surprised by the lack of Pantera, though. I figured Vulgar Display of Power would be on most top 10 lists. Also, if you like Paranoid by Sabbath check out Master of Reality. Their best album, by far!
Diamond Eyes by Deftones is good if you love white pony. Suggestions for part 2: Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power, Sepultura - Chaos AD, POD - Fundamental Elements of Southtown, Between the Buried and Me - Colors, Soulfly - self titled, Meshuggah - Obzen, Coal Chamber - self titled, Korn - Follow the Leader, Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory, Poison the Well - The Opposite of December.
I haven’t watch the video yet, but I think the idea of you doing this shows your open minded to at least trying things you don’t think you’d enjoy and that’s what we need more of
Respectfully… How you gonna come out and say Dirt by Alice In Chains is the same song over and over?! Did we listen to the same album??? Them Bones, Rooster, Down In A Hole, Angry Chair and Would? Sound distinctly different from each other. Respect your opinion but this is the wildest take on Dirt I’ve ever heard 🤯
Dopethrone was one of the albums that got me into heavier types of metal. A couple of my friends who aren't into metal at all like Electric Wizard. They seem like a good lead-in band into metal.
Some recommendations for more metal albums if you want to continue to explore the genre: Power Trip - Nightmare Logic, VILDHJARTA - måsstaden under vatten(this has an instrumental version if ur not down with the vocals), Sleep - Holy Mountain, Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere, Gojira - Magma, and Mastodon - Leviathan.
There are a lot of great modern metal classics, foundations of burden by Pallbearer, sunbather by Deafheaven, and last year had great albums by Knocked Loose and Blood Incantation
@KyleReidMu definitely check out Knocked Loose It's worth mentioning that they're a Hardcore band, and the genre of Hardcore evolved out of Punk. They're most definitely fans of both Metal and Hardcore (and Punk) though. Not being a gatekeeper or elitist, but saying that the context can make some music a little more enjoyable when you understand what it is they're trying to achieve with a band's sound and why some musical conventions are evolved over time.
Welcome to the metal community! If you are interested in diving deeper in, i would reccomend: Ashes of the wake - Lamb of God Planetary Duality - the faceless The Blackening - machine head Monoliths and Dimensions - Sunn O))) Masstaden Under Vatten - Vildhjarta The Poetic Edda - Disembodied Tyrant Some old some new but all good.
If you like the bass in rage against the machine, listen to a lot of The Battle of Los Angeles. Songs like Calm Like A Bomb are amazing and the bass on that album is so incredible
Glad you're opening up to the genre. Metal's been a huge part of my life. If you're planning to try more I'd recommend The Way Of All Flesh by Gojira or honestly anything by Gojira. The harsh vocals may take one off guard at first but it's worth it man. Besides that I'd also recommend City of Evil by Avenged Sevenfold which has some stunning guitarwork and Aenema or Lateralus by Tool. Tool is a band that drowns you in sound and it's absolutely amazing.
Kyle see if (any of) these albums do it for ya: "Epitaph" by Necrophagist, "Banished by Sin" or "Legion" by Deicide, and "Abominable" by Amagortis. Those are some different flavors of death metal from tech to brutal but all very listenable with fantastic songwriting. Though Amagortis is classified as Brutal Death Metal, their debut Abominable a has low-fi-like production that's more pleasing to the ear than most music that heavy. Deicide has amazing songwriting and more groove than one would expect, go with the latest "Banished by Sin" if you want their peak production quality or "Legion" if you want what many consider one of their best from the early years. Necrophagist is Tech Death and more specifically one of the best Technical Death Metal bands ever, Epitaph is their 3rd and last release before disbanding and hearing their instrumentation for the first time should be pretty mindblowing if you've never experience Tech Death before. There's bands like Archspire that have since ran with what Necrophagist was doing to an almost absurd level of speed and technicality but that's definitely more on the side of something you probably won't be able to get into without first getting into the more foundational stuff it's inspired by. Or you can smoke a bowl and listen to Tool's "Ænima" for something chill and progressive that still has some metal to it mixed with the more melody driven stuff. One thing to keep in mind with extreme metal is that the vocals are often treated like another distorted instrument in the ensemble. Thus the vocals can be more about the vibe and energy they convey than the lyrics. Of course then you have stuff like Putrid Pile, Infectious Jelqing, Gorepot, or like VxPxOxAxAxWxAxMxCx with strait up pig noises for vocals. Once you're able to appreciate the musicianship despite those vocals then you know you're in deep with the heavy stuff. Anyway, hope you continue down the path of metal into the land of the uber heavy. It's a rewarding journey.
I first listened to Symbolic two years ago And found that album and other death metal hard to get into. At the moment today, it’s my favourite genre. Chuck is amazing
You should do another dive into metal and check out some other bands. I would suggest listening to these bands: Pantera Iron maiden Korn Slipknot Nightwish
Nice list and a pretty fair assesment of the albums. You like what you like, the extremer forms are certainly not for everyone. Metal is a pretty broad genre, so like you've probably already noticed. Everybody's got their own view on what should be a top 10 album list.
Seeing someone not like metal at first, but even tho giving it a try, making an effort, actually paying attention and growing to enjoy it shows a level of maturity a LOT of people lack. Imagine the amount of things people are missing because they don't give an actual try to stuff they think they don't enjoy. And he managed to do a good commentary and point good things even for the albums he didn't enjoy. This is the definition of being open minded.
Actually really cool and thoughtful analysis, especially from a guy who is not into metal. I think so many people would gain so much from having the patience to listen to stuff that maybe doesn't grab them right away or they're not so familiar with. One needs to earn the right to say "I don't like this", and you did :D And the screaming.. you'll get into it eventually ;) Try Devin Townsend, maybe the live version of "Deadhead", it'll give you face melting screams, but not in an overwhelming amount and there's lot of cleansing clean vocals. After that there's Opeth with maybe song like "The Grand Conjuration"; insanely cool riffs, mellow and haunting yet bright and soothing cleans with borderline demonic growls. Kinda mad there was grunge and no Opeth or Gojira (or Slayer) on a metal top list. Hell.. Tool should be there way before Alice in Chains. Maybe save Bathory, Burzum and Darkthrone for later :D
Metallica's first few albums are all amazing. Cliff Burton on bass was the secret sauce. RIP Cliff. Sabbath is pretty much Patient 0 of Metal. there was heavy before, but they made it an aesthetic. Boris has so much material covering so many genres, from Doom and Drone to Punk. great band. SoaD's last two albums, Mezmerize and Hypnotize, are my favorites. their debut is amazing too. eventually, when your ears are stronger, you'll enjoy Death. and it gets so much heavier. Tim Commerford from Rage holds it down on bass. dude's a Groove Machine. Dopethrone is from another dimension. you might like Streetcleaner by Godflesh.
I've been slowly getting into metal over the last two or so years, but this year I decided to go all in and check out the classics, so I found a list of the top 100 metal bands and I'm making my way through each band's discography. In addition to the ones I already checked out, I've listened to three bands for the first time: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Maudlin Of The Well. The first two came from the list and the third one came from another list of more experimental recs but it was metal so I decided to check it out. Holy shit tho, Black Sabbath is mind-blowing. They lowk might become one of my favorite bands soon, they're the metal equivalent of The Beatles, King Crimson or Radiohead. I prob won't shut up about them for the rest of the year ! 🤣
interesting how different some peoples music tastes can be while also being very similar in some aspects. I had pretty much the exact same experience with toxicity by soad that you had but my experience with symbolic and rage against the machine were basically the complete opposite of yours. I just cannot get into rage against the machines music even after trying multiple times yet i absolutely loved symbolic from the first listen.
death is one of the final bands I recommend to people because of the technicality and sound, not usually good for new comers but is absolutely amazing to people who are used to that type of music
Personally I think Death is one of the most accessible death metal bands...exactly because they have more going on in there than just straight up death. But also, I've never tried to recommend them to normies.
Honestly, fair assessment. Also, King GIzzy mentioned!!!! Lezzz goooooooo!!!!! You should really give their metal albums another go. At least listen to Infest The Rats' nest. It's the lighter of the two. Those albums are what got me hooked on gizz.
death is an aquired taste im 17 and now like 4ish years into my metal journey and only in the past few months have I finally been getting into death and realizing their brilliance
I get not liking Death. It took a while for me, until I started to love it. I just continued with my taste in metal which later developed into more harsher sounds, until I got to Death Metal. The bands that got me into death were Gojira then Opeth (my favorite band oat) If you go back to it I recommend the albums Gojira - From Mars to Sirius (Progressive Groove death metal) Opeth - Blackwater Park (Progressive folk death metal)
My absolute favorite metal album of all time and the only metal album I’ve heard so far that I’d consider perfect would be Watching From a Distance by Warning. Not sure how much you’d like it since it is a tiny bit repetitive at times but it’s definitely worth a listen
Don’t understand how anyone could want to listen to Deftones again but not enjoy Alice in Chains? Music taste is crazy. At least you like Sabbath, I always say start with them if you’re trying to get into metal & ease yourself into the heavier stuff.
I think the reason why people don't like screaming or growling, "cookie monster" vocals is they're used to the vocals being a melodic component of most popular music. If they shift their perspective on it just slightly and try considering the vocals in metal as more rhythmic or percussive, rather than melodic, I think that makes it much easier for the style to "click" for most people. I always consider it a real shame when people can't get into those kinds of vocals, they're really shutting themselves off from a very unique musical experience...allow the vocals to fill a different role apart from the one you would normally expect, and you'll discover a completely new way that the vocals blend with the rest of the music to your ears...you might find it much more rewarding of a listen!
Round two recommendations: Offspring - smash Nailbomb - pointblank Godforbid - gone forever Dead to fall - the Phoenix throne The acacia strain - death is the only mortal Fear factory - obsolete Hatebreed - preserverance Mastodon - leviathan Pantera - vulgar display of power Thy art is murder - hate

"the guy is just screaming the whole time!" Also my grandmothers take on metal
“The guitars and vocals are heavy” yeah that’s like the whole point

The actual f**k. How on earth can you listen to Them Bones and say it sounds the same as Rooster, or Down in a Hole, or Would? Different in style, tone, rhythm. Bizarre review.
What do you mean Godsmack & Down in a Hole are the exact same song?
Go back to Symbolic after listening to more metal. With subgenres like death metal it's very hard to appreciate it if you aren't really familiar with other types of metal, people typically work their way up in heaviness when getting into metal.

@@prismix0870fair enough:
1) while I agree Seventh son of a seventh son is pretty digerible, Somewhere in time aims a lot to have the classic structure of verse-chorus-verse-chorus. The songs are meant to be more sing-along than other Iron Maiden albums. But Seventh son may work out as well
2) thanks for their correction on Dream Theater.
That would require work.

Death metal is definitely an acquired taste, once you learn to enjoy it it fucking bangs

If you want more sludge metal check out Acid Bath When The Kite String Pops. Essential metal in my opinion.
@@jakemcelroy954 YES one of the best metal albums I've heard
"Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form" by Crowbar is another great album, but idk if he'd be ready for it. Crowbar is ridiculously heavy, that shit will shatter every bone in his body.
god i love kite string
The first Down album would probably be a better place to start than Acid Bath, but it's a dope album no doubt!
acid bath my beloved
Not as heavy but they have the same feel
a modern metal video would be fun. like chat pile, kvelertak, deafheaven, etc.
Hell yes
Chat pile mentioned lets gooooo
deafheaven would be such an interesting one for him i think
@@perfectelectricman For all the controversy and hate they get from trve-kultists and whoever, I've often seen them credited for getting people into metal.
@@emigrant1510 No one hates metal more than metalheads.
ay man been here since 2k subs, I remember asking u to give metal another chance on some video cuz it is such a huge genre with so many different sounds, and I am so glad you actually gave those albums a good chance, always great listening to u rant on music, here are some albums I recommend based on what you felt abt those albums as a lifelong metal head:
Epicus doomicus matelicus - candlemass, its classic doom metal since u like electric wizard and sabbath, i really think u will enjoy the evil wizard doom metal vibe from this one.
black sabbath - black sabbath, their first self titled album is peak evil riffage imo, it is lighter than other albums it feels like evil folk album with metal instruments, I love it.
As a metalhead I wanna say Im glad you decided to give the genre a shot, if you do decide to pick guitar back up I highly reccomend learning some Black Sabbath riffs (especially Paranoid), trust me
I just found this and i don't know too much of your musical background, but i'd love to see you do this with prog rock!
Loved this. Was surprised your favourite was Dopethrone but despite being one of the heaviest metal albums I know, its actually heavy in a pretty surprisingly accessible way, unlike, say, Phyllomedusa, so it makes a lotta sense.
“It all kinda sounds the same”…you mean like all music since ~ 2000?
you should listen to Cowboys From Hell, City Of Evil, Waking The Fallen, Show No Mercy, and Number Of The Beast.
Despite the crazy takes throughout the video, I commend you for giving Metal a try, expanding your knowledge on it and exploring some of the most memorable albums in the genre.
i think the repeat listening is probably what soured dirt and rust in peace which is understandable, i'd recommend revisiting after a while and reevaluating because sometimes taking time away from an album can change your opinion
also, i'm surprised you didn't mention would? in your standouts for dirt, easily one of my favorite aic songs
I really appreciate this video!!! So many people saying oh how can you think X Y and Z without realising enjoyment of music is subjective :) it's always nice hearing the perspective of a non-metalhead on this stuff!
Listen to ashes against the grain by agalloch that’s easily my favorite metal album and honestly transcends the genre
That’s how I feel about The Mantle, Agalloch is the band I show to anyone who thinks metal is incapable of being beautiful.
The mantle >>>>>
Wait I found someone that likes agalloch
@ Wyattxhim just uploaded a video on them 22 minutes ago omfg
Agalloch is peak. Try Downfall of Nur - Umbras de Barbagia for something similar and wildly underrated
If someone likes Jazz music, I can recommend Progressive Metal, Avant Garde Metal, and maybe even Funk Metal, as good starters.
get this man listening to some Bathory
That was just the tip of the iceberg. *Laughs diabolically*
I think I might have some recommendations for you based on your current taste.
First, since you're seeming to enjoy SOAD a bit more now, listen to Daron and Serj's other projects. Serj has his solo music and Daron is also in Scars on Broadway, which is basically System of a Down 2
Tyrada is a really cool Polish thrash band, very unknown but groovy as hell
You might be at the point where I could recommend Korn to you.
Dude totally valid perspective, on those albums - I knew you are my guy when you said that Disposable Heroes is your favorite track on Master.
That Dirt take is absolutely baffling
how can someone hate all of metal
If you watched the video, it turned out he didn't
@GodofToast some people just prefer wood over metal
@@joe_witt_5677 i prefer stone tbh. maybe wheat
Cuz he's a coward
Here are some other (mostly) newer albums that are more diverse than RYM's top picks:
All Them Witches - Lightning at the Door (2016, sp00ky hard rock and blues)
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley (1994, stoner/desert, my strongest recommendation, probably a big inspiration for Dopethrone)
Motorhead - Overkill (1979, proto-thrash)
Belushi Speedball - What, Us Worry? (2022, thrash with lots of spongebob and dbz refernces and few guitar solos)
Doom 2016 / Doom Eternal OST (industrial? just a bunch of heavy riffs and synths)
Rammstein - Mutter (2001, industrial, scary german men, must-listen if you like the DOOM OSTs)
Peeling Flesh - The G Code (2024, slam w/ Memphis and Houston rap influences)
Jesus Piece - Only Self (2018, metallic hardcore / beatdown)
Lotta solid takes. I was surprised by the lack of Pantera, though. I figured Vulgar Display of Power would be on most top 10 lists.
Also, if you like Paranoid by Sabbath check out Master of Reality. Their best album, by far!
Diamond Eyes by Deftones is good if you love white pony.
Suggestions for part 2: Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power, Sepultura - Chaos AD, POD - Fundamental Elements of Southtown, Between the Buried and Me - Colors, Soulfly - self titled, Meshuggah - Obzen, Coal Chamber - self titled, Korn - Follow the Leader, Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory, Poison the Well - The Opposite of December.
surprised to not see Blizzard of Ozz on here, you should definitely check that one out bc its fucking sick, maybe in a part 2?
I haven’t watch the video yet, but I think the idea of you doing this shows your open minded to at least trying things you don’t think you’d enjoy and that’s what we need more of
Best death metal album Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead by Skinless. You may not like it, but give it just one chance.
Electric Wizard is sludge metal, but they're mainly stoner metal.
Been wanting to check out those Knocked Loose and Blood Incantation albums
@KyleReidMu definitely check out Knocked Loose
It's worth mentioning that they're a Hardcore band, and the genre of Hardcore evolved out of Punk. They're most definitely fans of both Metal and Hardcore (and Punk) though.
Not being a gatekeeper or elitist, but saying that the context can make some music a little more enjoyable when you understand what it is they're trying to achieve with a band's sound and why some musical conventions are evolved over time.
Well I like Pallbearer from this. So I do agree on that.
Welcome to the metal community! If you are interested in diving deeper in, i would reccomend:
Ashes of the wake - Lamb of God
Planetary Duality - the faceless
The Blackening - machine head
Monoliths and Dimensions - Sunn O)))
Masstaden Under Vatten - Vildhjarta
The Poetic Edda - Disembodied Tyrant
Some old some new but all good.
If you like the bass in rage against the machine, listen to a lot of The Battle of Los Angeles. Songs like Calm Like A Bomb are amazing and the bass on that album is so incredible
The Death take makes me sad. Maybe you would like The Sound of Perserverance more? Putting Dopethrone at the top makes me super happy. 😊 great video
Rather than focusing on the all-time greats, I hope you'll try some modern metal to see if the current sound matches your modern sensibilities next.
This metalhead will be subscribing. I like your outlook and I can for see more metal content in your future. Even if you didn't like Symbolic 🤘
I first listened to Symbolic two years ago And found that album and other death metal hard to get into. At the moment today, it’s my favourite genre. Chuck is amazing
Very interesting takes but keep listening. I used to not like so many songs but I love them now
HE LIKES ELECTRIC WIZARD, BLACK SABBATH AND BORIS, WE GOT A DOOM METAL FAN IN THE MAKING!!!
You should do another dive into metal and check out some other bands. I would suggest listening to these bands:
Pantera
Iron maiden
Korn
Slipknot
Nightwish
One needs to earn the right to say "I don't like this", and you did :D
And the screaming.. you'll get into it eventually ;)
Try Devin Townsend, maybe the live version of "Deadhead", it'll give you face melting screams, but not in an overwhelming amount and there's lot of cleansing clean vocals.
Maybe save Bathory, Burzum and Darkthrone for later :D
ok never in a thousand years did i expect dopethrone to be labeled the 10th best metal album but i'm so glad it is
Metallica's first few albums are all amazing.
My favorite way to put Sabbath is that you can argue there might be heavy metal songs before them, but they were truly the first band of the genre.
Black Sabbath is one of the best bands ever, no doubt!
interesting how different some peoples music tastes can be while also being very similar in some aspects.
You should do this but for metal albums from the 2010s, I think youd be surprised by how different it is
Honestly, fair assessment.
The bands that got me into death were Gojira then Opeth (my favorite band oat)
If you go back to it I recommend the albums
Gojira - From Mars to Sirius (Progressive Groove death metal)
Opeth - Blackwater Park (Progressive folk death metal)
All of Dirt's tracks are the same? You're trolling, right? Down in a hole is just like Them bones, huh?
Round two recommendations:
Offspring - smash
Nailbomb - pointblank
Godforbid - gone forever
Dead to fall - the Phoenix throne
The acacia strain - death is the only mortal
Fear factory - obsolete
Hatebreed - preserverance
Mastodon - leviathan
Pantera - vulgar display of power
Thy art is murder - hate
