  • Trackers are so old that they're practically new again! The Dirtywave M8 is a powerful and enticing little package, and it's blown me away. I wanted to talk a bit about my feelings on it after a week or so. Let me know if you've got any questions about the M8, as I'm trying to gauge interest in a Q&A video!

    Looks like a fun device. There are quite a few interesting synths and grooveboxes out there being produced by individuals and small teams.
    There is something about those keys that gets my attention. Just a nice aesthetic detail.
    Good to hear from you, and thanks for sharing the info and the music!

      Glad you liked it! Something like the M8, that's designed by just one person, feels really cohesive. The Deluge is similar.

      It's really cool! Having a fully fledged tracker that's the size of a phone and pulls audio from a Micro SD card is like a dream come true for me.

    Hi there…nice video. Just a tip on your mic’d audio…there’s some heavy 60/120 hz hum in it. Might be a ground loop or some power cords laying with unbalanced lines. If you can’t find the fix a high pass filter on the final might help. Looking forward to more M8 content.

    Where do you find these little strange music devices? This sounds great.

      Thanks! And I saw it on a Reddit post about the Polyend Tracker, about the same time that I had some gear I didn't need and planned to sell for the Polyend. I'm sure the Polyend Tracker is great, but the M8 triggers all the Gameboy/LSDJ nostalgia.

    I really like the portability aspect. I dont have that much free time, but when I am commuting/travelling I kind of do. I think this device might be for music making what the switch is for gaming.

    I got so excited for you when I saw the thumbnail! I think this is an instant classic. It's like LSDJ 64!! Definitely interested to see where it lands in your setup compared to things like the OP-1

    • @JoshIsMakingMusic
      @JoshIsMakingMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's like, the aesthetic ideal of LSDJ. It's both quirky and functional, so it's definitely a challenger for the OP-1.

      @@JoshIsMakingMusic definitely! Well, I can 100% say this video led me to pickup a Teensy 4.1 so maybe soon I'll see for myself. The combination of a cheap point of entry plus an opportunity to tinker ..I'm in!

    I really want to get started with synth. Do you recommend this as an entry into the synth world?

    • @Samich
      @Samich 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're curious, the M8 headless setup with the Teensy 4.1 (as mentioned in the video) comes to around $30. Insane value to get to toy with the software that's been made here. However, there are free choices to learn more about trackers in general to see if you actually enjoy the workflow or not. It's a very different approach to music composition compared to things like Ableton, Logic, or Reason.
      You can try software such as FamiStudio, LSDJ (Gameboy emulator version of a Tracker and what the M8 is inspired from), or SunVox. All of these are free to use!

      @JoshIsMakingMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@qdbll5875 I'm gonna second Connor Anderson's suggestions, and add that if you're trying to just get a feel for synths, starting with plugins in a DAW like Ableton can be a good way to go, especially if you snag a free trial and get some free plugins. That wouldn't be a tracker though, if you want a tracker experience, Famitracker or LSDJ get strong recommendations.
