    Sometimes beginners can be more helpful for beginners because they are going through it and experimenting themselves. On that note, I have left some notes here:
    Okay, first let me say something that everybody should be clear on. I have tried for hours, and finally made my first 3 clear notes (so far, but have to go to work now). MORE THAN LIKELY, YOU ARE BLOWING **TOO HARD**. Second note, don't concentrate so hard on blowing STRAIGHT FORWARD. It is not STRAIGHT FORWARD. More like a natural whistle, the air kind of points downward. And one more time you are blowing TOO HARD. You're welcome, to whoever else is struggling. Great video though! Just thought this was important to point out. Concentrate on making a note lightly first, and the shape of the airflow, and THEN worry about blowing harder later. TRUST ME ON THIS. Also, feel at least half of the rim of the opening touching your lips. The flute itself may be facing at about a 30-40 degree angle, but the hole is NOT.
    Edit: Oh, and this part is hard to explain, but YES, as stated in the video, it only works with DIAPHRAGMic breathing**
    Edit 2: Start out with a whistle position, and to make the note clearer, and then, as stated in the video, focus on the width of your air path, and feel yourself making it more like a "laser" for a clearer note!!! Also, KEEP YOUR TONGUE like you are whistling, but you're not actually whistling!!

    Thank you for this. It is a challenge, but one I am enjoying. I’ve got a background in western concert flutes, Chinese DiZi, and Xiao.

    THANK YOU for your video. I bought an Arabic ney and I just couldn’t get any sound out of it. After watching your video through several times, and a couple of hours practice it suddenly “clicked” how to do it and I can now reliably get lovely sounds from the instrument. You’re an absolute star!

    thank you for the content you share with people through TH-cam.
    Do you also have a video that has specific tips and tricks about bass tones and how to make them sound like sufi music?
    I have been playing the ney for 1.5 years now, but my teacher has not been able to explain it to me so I am still searching.
    I do exercises with the ney every day but I don't know exactly what to do.

    hello as an additional tip: I found out that if you can't get a sound from the ney despite practicing for a long time, you should simply de-grade the mouthpiece, especially with the plastic version. As was well explained, the sound on the mouthpiece is created by splitting the airflow. The plastic mouthpiece of my ney was round and blunt. Of course, no sound could be created in this way. I sharpened the edge of the mouthpiece with a knife and now I can play nicely.

    Thank you, is a technique exactly the same regarding the physics of producing the tone for the Turkish and Arabic ney. Mine is Persian and therefore does not have a mouthpiece like yours. Additionally I noticed most players with an Arabic instrument put it inside their mouth and here you are only holding the instrument outside of your mouth

    Salam alaikum kardash, I'm from Mexico, I've been watching your videos, I like it so much. I want to learn to play the ney, I'm Muslim and Sufi student, I just have one question, which ney it's best to star learning? I'm thinking on buying Kaz Ney from plastic. What do you think? I appreciate your answer, Allah bless you.

    Great video! I don't have problems making the ney sound, but I really can't produce any sound when all the holes are covered! Any tips on that? Thanks!!

    • @danmusiceasy
      @danmusiceasy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm also a beginner on the Ney, and the note with all holes covered took a long time to produce. In the beginning I couldn't, then I was able to do it, but the volume was much, much lower than for other notes. But now I can do it pretty easily. If you keep practicing with the notes you can produce, and slowly get a more and more solid sound, perhaps the lowest note will sound too. Btw, I have the arabic Nay and it has an even lower register before that, with all 7 notes, but that one is really difficult.

    Okay so I'm back with an unfortunate update... Although I'm able to get almost 5 clear notes, in order to do that, I have to push my bottom jaw forward in a very uncomfortable way. I have an overbite... Now I have to either live with the fact that I'll never be able to play this instrument, or somehow figure out a special angle of airflow to compensate (maybe by positioning the Ney more downward? Idk, we'll see...) ... I play 21 different instruments, I even play the Duduk with no issues, but this would be my first true woodwind instrument, and so this factor never crossed my mind until now... 😥
