I am an Iranian and I am a seven band reed player who is taught by our teacher. It takes a lot of practice to make this instrument sound. It may take years before you can produce a pleasant sound from this instrument.
I have arrived at that conclusion after three days. I am already an experienced side blown flute player and understand embouchure and it took me about 7 years to get a good embouchure and therefore clear tone. I will add though that a good instrument makes a big difference. So i say to any beginner, try to get an experienced player to choose your first instrument and don't be afraid to pay big money. If your have any intelligence you will realize that playing music is a lifetime journey.
I am playing the Arabic / Egyptian Nay, but it seems to be totally different from the kind of blowing and placing the lips. It really seems much more complicated than the Arabic/Turkish/Greek Nay.
There are several ways to produce the sound, the most common is the dental method, where you have to put the straw between the two teeth and place the tip of the tongue at the bottom of the straw in an arc shape on the edge of the straw and the belly of your tongue to the roof of the mouth.

Good explanation, but I don't get it, don't know what to do with my tongue. What should the airstream do? Blow into the Ney, or on the rim? I have an arab Ney and learnt to play the arab way with the lips, but the persian way seems to have a more colorful playing and I want to learn it. Do I need a persian instrument for this technique or should it work on an arab Ney too? Thanks for an advice
You will have a sound without interference and it has 5 different sounds. The closer the tongue is to the roof of the mouth and the more the arch of the tongue is, the lower the sound will be, a completely different sound from the first sound.
Thanks a lot for your energy to help. Im not thinking to give up, but i m having trouble to get my first sound... Some weeks already tryining from time to time... No sound at all. One question... Your down teeth have to touch the Ney or not?
I rejoice being able to read from you brother. The Ney has the same « sympathy » as the glass that makes the sound. The trick is to reunite all the conditions. As I have mentioned in the video, the pressure of the blow should not be exaggerated. It is a very subtle blow that brings the Ney into « sympathy » or vibration. This vibration will create this such particular and beautiful sound. Therefore, in my opinion, the best way to be able to perform such sound, is that One should try to replicate the position and posture of someone that plays the Ney already, and this video was an attempt to succeed that.. However, if you have not yet succeeded, I recommend you to hydrate well, and to keep your tongue wet as well. The mechanics behind may help you. You can see the key as a combination of forces. The blow goes to the Ney and gives the energy to the instrument. Your tongue acts as a magnifier that is sympathetic with the frequency of the blow and of the instrument (which are same since the blow flows through the instrument). Finding the right combination is not easy at first glance, but one you succeed it becomes as easy as a glass of water ringing. Therefore, your tongue only should touch the bottom of the Ney. Good luck brother.
I never thought about the dehydration of the tongue! It's possibly due to stress or unnecessarily tightening the tongue that it goes dry, right? The sound 'Pe' is a magical trick though
first of all thank you for this video the problem not how to get the sound for me is about the sound of the air is annoying and there is no purity, what is the reason? and what is the best way to get the highest notes in ney
I'd day that it is because your mouth is not "yet" fitting appropriately into the Ney's top. I had the same difficulties at the beginning, (but my Ney had a "blue" layer on the top + a band to protect it presumably) once I took of the protection, and did it raw, it was much comfortable. And, something that you must consider as well, is that the Ney is an instrument that will sound exponentially better if you add an echo to it (like in temples, monasteries, mosques). Trying to make it sound good with no echo is a difficult task for a beginner. And last advice but not least, try different position to feel comfortable with the Ney. To get to higher note, the pression of air must be stronger, which means that you have to first, direct the air into the Ney (therefore there will be no annoying sound of air) to be able blow stronger with a thinner expulsion of air... I hope this make sens to you..

All these should be done only on one side of the mouth, and the other side of the mouth should be completely open, and the side where the straw is located should be completely covered and without air leakage, and the wind should be very little from the diaphragm of the lower abdomen.
I personally don't know any good teacher online, but I shall tell you what my past teacher told me about the Ney. It is that, "it takes 10 years to master the sound (only) of the Ney, but it takes 10 minutes a day to progress.." :) Keep practicing and feel your own progress, take your Ney with you wherever you go and feel the resonance of the place you will play in.
@@JulienMOVAHEDI Hello Julien, I appreciate your reply. That's exactly what I'm doing : 30mn a day. I have improved a lot as far as the sound is concerned. Now I need to know how to produce high-pitches sounds. Could you do a tutorial about that? Regards

Once you have mastered the technic, you can simply play shorter notes and take small breaks. Playing alongside another music is a good exercise to gain more endurance. :-)
I know your feeling. My only advice is try without putting too much strength, and be as subtile as the finger that make the glass to sound. Watch the video again and replicate the same position of the mouth and tongue. Good luck!

Bonjour Jean-Baptiste,
Merci pour votre intérêt. Je tacherai de faire une vidéo explicative en français.
vous pouvez trouver cette video en français sur le lien suivant th-cam.com/video/4VZmkt3tEXA/w-d-xo.html
Does it matter on which side you are playing from (right from the teeth or left from the teeth )
As long as you are comfortable with your instrument, it does not matter. Keeping your tongue hydrated and you go easy on the blow, are appropriate.
Does the pitch change even if I remove the sari?
The pitch depends on the Ney’s length.
All these should be done only on one side of the mouth, and the other side of the mouth should be completely open, and the side where the straw is located should be completely covered and without air leakage, and the wind should be very little from the diaphragm of the lower abdomen.
