    I like how everybody is commenting how this guy has no talent. HE'S GIVING A DEMO OF THE SNARE, NOT HIS SKILLS.

      Sorry dude,but if you can't even roll properly,how can one evaluate the nuances of a snare drum?
      Good recordings ,but totally lame execution..

    • @Lildrummerboy714
      @Lildrummerboy714 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      cpu554 You don't need to do a proper " roll " to evaluate the effectiveness or sound(preferred sound) of a snare. There are many different styles and techniques that incorporate different elements, I.E. rim shots etc. that people use to their preferred preference. Others just play for the love of music. I do agree that knowing the proper forms of such snare techniques can no doubt be beneficial in weighing decisions to choose ,but lets not get " to drum techie" this video is fine and will suffice.

    The drumming community has gone down drastically. Not even criticism, just down and out right rude and insensitive. Instead of making people want to quit, how about helping a fellow musician out. We were all at some point our career not the best, which we still are.

    You can clearly hear the difference beetween different snare drums. The beats played were off, but nonetheless it's still better than some other "all rimshot" videos where all snare drums sound almost the same.

    If you are using different heads this test means nothing. Put single ply coated ambassadors on all of them, then tune them the same and you will be able to hear the difference in the drum. What you are hearing hear is mostly the difference in the head.

  • @cymbalmanable
    @cymbalmanable 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is much ado about nothing in my opinion. All of the drums sound nearly the same because the tensioning is so tight. When the stick hits the drum with the snares on, all of them exhibit the attack of the stick with little resonance following. The actual hit sounds almost like the snares are off and has a tom tom quality.

  • @magneticbuttockputty
    @magneticbuttockputty 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The cherry ash would have sounded MUCH better with a thinner head. It's already a fairly dry snare, and when you add a two-ply head with a sound control dot, it kills a lot of the natural resonance of the snare.

    I found the vid very informative. I love testing & mixing up head & material combinations (depths & sizes too).
    I just purchased a Pork Pie Big Black Bob Black Nickel over Brass snare from eBay. I haven't received it yet but, I have a CS coated & PS3 no dot to try with it. I also have a hazy Ambassador for snare side, Sound Blaster snare wires, Dunnett throw off & nylon washers. I hope to supercharge this relatively inexpensive snare drum.

    Great demonstration. That must have taken a lot of effort. The DW sounds a bit thin. The Tama Metalworks had a nice crack without losing its bottom. The Chad Smith Pearl had a nice character to it. The Pork Pie delivered. The Mapex had a complex, pleasing snap with some warmth; that hoop looked insane! Nice work!

  • @bobstigler
    @bobstigler 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The heads and strainer is where the sound comes from on a snare. The depth of the snare drum is too shallow to make any difference in sound concerning what material it is constructed of. I was messing about with a steel snare and a maple snare...trying different heads and strainers. I was able to make my cheap steel snare sound really warm and full...and I managed to make my expensive maple snare sound like a hard thin marching band snare. Don't be fooled by the manufacture/industry hype. They all want to trick you to spend the big bucks.

    • @bobstigler

      By strainer I mean the actual snare wire. Sorry for the confusion. Back in the day we would refer to the snare wire as 'the strainer'...

    i agree with bugsy seagul, yes the snare is choked by the actual snares but most importantly the drummer has no dynamic demonstration to let the snare drum breath and move, its like breathing in and out and a snare drum must be given the dynamic approach to demonstrate the beauty of the actual instrument. does a dancer move stiffly with no grace?

    That seems to be personal preference. The comments on these videos are very contradictory: the snare wires are too tight or too loose, the tuning is too low or too high, there should thin, singly ply heads or thicker, double ply heads on the drum, etc.
