    I've revisited this video and it reminded me how much I enjoy your reviews of the larger hobby grade planes vs the toy grade. The hobby grade planes showcase your piloting skills. Great job Brian.

I wish I had a bit more free time, now-a-days, so I could share a bit more, and more often, but this will happen again when we get a feet under us. This is THE most satisfying RC video I've watched in my life. I have the Carbon Cub S+ as one of my first planes and will train some more months with it to get ready for this beautiful Carbon Z Cub SS. The sound, the versatility, the look - awesome.
    Great flying skills shown here Brian, amazing work from camera-crew, too! Hope Horizon Hobby rewards you for that.
    And since I am from Germany I need to mention the unboxing video and that "DE" in the manual doesn't mean Dutch (Netherland's language), but "DEeutsch", German. Calling a German "Dutch" is like I'd refer to Americans as Canadians :)

      At least you get to watch the awesome planes flying from the AFB!!! BUT that would suck with the no flight zone. How bad would that suck if they built an airport right next to my house - LOL - this is part of the reason I want to make a full scale runway ;) Get it established now, then muddy the waters for the FAA. If it's "my" private runway, then I guess I will be in full compliance - I HOPE!!!

    Nice flying Brian, and lots of good suggestions. So, you want a carbon cub and your own runway. Go for it. A Citabria is a less expensive entry. I had one. About 40K. My runway is 900ft and its one way in and out. One side uphill and tall trees, the other, open water. You can set up a nice approach but once you are below tree level there is no going around. Never been a problem though. And man, it is so much fun to walk out the back door and jump in an airplane. I had a friend who used to do high alpha takeoffs just like you did with that cub, but with a full sized 172. Sadly, his antics eventually ended badly. When you get your full sized airplane put on a different hat. :). Looking forward to your Draco review. I have one on order.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is AWESOME, and you've made me super jealous!!!
      I want to buy out my neighbor to the South, and use the crest of our knolls back there for a runway...that's why we do GRASS hay, and not alfalfa (tangling the wheels up would make for a bad day, I suspect).
      Some day, you should EMAIL me, so we can share more specifics that might not be appropriate in this public arena. We have it listed on the ABOUT part of the channel...and we are slow with checking it, it's kind of a good Spam catcher - LOL ;)

    • @bendrixbailey1430
      @bendrixbailey1430 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianPhillipsRC I mowed mine lawn smooth, always. Believe it or not but a grass stain on a prop is considered a prop strike, and a prop strike (FAA rule) requires the engine be torn down and inspected. I doubt anyone does, but if you got ramp checked with grass stains on the prop you’d have to. So, the runway at least has to be mowed short. Doesn’t matter what grows to either side. I cultivated some nice tough poverty grass and goldenrod beside mine!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree about the lights!!! Daylight "savings" stupidity is about to go into force, so we'll have to come home from work to a pittance of daylight - PUKE - thus nav lights and landing lights are going to be a thing very soon. Maybe if my other filming obligations pan out the way I expect, I can work that mod video into my docket in the next few weeks. I'm also trying to buy a tractor right now, and we've been working out tails off on getting the woods cleaned up before horrible weather sets in, but that could actually wait....
      As for Horizon Hobby sending me planes - yes please!!! I've kinda been asking for a couple years now, but they don't seem to even understand how many times I've sold stuff for them. I'd be nice, even if they'd give me a blanket discount at least, but I guess they know me well enough to know I'm gonna buy it anyway, so why offer it to me for free or at a discount (I don't know, maybe so I wouldn't have time to review Banggood stuff???? - Just saying - LOL)

      Ty - yeah, at about 14:30 or so, there was a "moment", but other than that, she's a great flying, and fairly forgiving aircraft...when you get ready to land, the plane seems to reject any notion of ground effect - LOL - which is why you see me smacking it to the ground so many times. It's very finite, the stall speed, there's NO warning...it just falls!

      Thanks so much for saying that! My wife, Megan, does a great job filming. We didn't realize what a knack she has for filming until we started this little TH-cam "experiment". We're lucky to have her helping us out!
      As for staying close...I try, and it does somewhat limit what I can do (for a video audience), but it's totally my "style" to fly in close quarters. I LOVE having the limitations, but there's times it's nice to have a bit more room, or when flying with a smaller aircraft, it's REALLY easy to shoot a landing, compared to this behemoth!
      Thanks for watching, and for the kind words!

      yes, they seem to be about the same, but the ZOP packs seem to fly longer...partially, because it was NEW and the Turnigy is not brand new (2 seasons old??? - sorry, I'm not 100% sure on that)...BUT my Turnigy packs do tend to puff pretty bad, since I'm not very nice to the packs always.
      You might be pleasantly surprised how inexpensive these ZOP lipos are, but they're only a small savings over Turnigy...or Zippy...except I LOVE XT60's, and I can get them stock with ZOP. This is a big time saver for me. Soldering on different ends is a real pain in the neck on lipos, especially BIGGER ones ;)

    Brian, not really a flying question - but as we get out of another lock-down here in the UK I want to tidy up my cub. The orange paint seems poorly applied and the aircraft needs a little TLC with the paint coming off at the edges of certain areas. Do you know what kind of paint I should get - ideally the correct orange of course, but what type of paint too? BTW - very much looking forward to your Draco review - I assume you are already flying it as you wait for being able to review it.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know the color, but I would say pick the closest orange and plan to paint whole sections ;( I HATE having to touch up hangar rash...since there's always that flaky stuff that doesn't stick, and then 95% of it that's totally fine...
      I've been told you can take some paint or a single part off the plane and take it into a hardware store and have latex paint matched, almost exactly...but I've never done this myself...so I feel bad recommending it without first had experience ;)
      As for the Draco...
      We have the Draco now, BUT we aren't allowed to review yet. This is not our choice. We will ABSOLUTELY BE REVIEWING IT ASAP! Please understand, our hands are tied...We can't even publish photos :(....

      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Glad to help! When you get a prop with a bit of a BEND, it can also cause some vibration, so check that too...look at the prop from the side and top while it's spinning (CAREFULLY, of course) and then double check the prop isn't "wobbling". Even if you have it balanced, this wobbling will make it seem out of balance. Also, you may need to check the balance of the spinner too, and sometimes the motor! If the prop is all, you'll be good with the tape solution, even though some of the "old timers" will complain it's pretty half-assed...BUTT it works ;)

      I don't know - I don't do that. Set the servo to go all the way down for "Landing" and 30-40% down from center, for "Takeoff". If that isn't enough, adjust from there. Flaps are subjective from one pilot to another anyway.

      We do lots of training, but we don't do many how to fly videos. We try to go into this more with beginner style planes, but in my experience, learning to fly RC is an excersize in repetition and muscle memory for best results FIRST, then mix in flight principles as we progress.
      If you want to see more of how we got to where we are, which would be very cringe-worthy for me...but you might get a kick out of it.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can calibrate the throttle range super easy.
      Generally, you put the throttle stick to 100%, then plug in the plane, but do it SUPER CAREFUL! This plane can chop your fingers off if you're not CAREFUL!!! Secure the plane and keep in a safe position, but best option would be to remove the prop. When the plane FAILS to initiate, you'll hear the songs from the ESC, and then just pull the Throttle stick down to 0%. If that DOESN'T work, call horizon and see what they suggest. Also, make sure the monitor mode shows a nice linear response similar to your stick position through the range.

      Yes, flies very good, BUT it's a HUGE pain in the butt to get the stupid geo-fencing system to work, and better bring a change of drawers for the first time it totally takes over and you swear you've lost control totally, and then you realize, you just went past the geo-fence. Other than that, it's a GREAT flying and BEAUTIFUL plane. I would have one if HH would offer it as a BNF WITHOUT all the stupid GPS crap. I don't mind the SAFE or SAFE Select for a second, but the GPS+ is a NO-GO for me :)

    My aeroscout makes that same loud propeller noise. Instead of adding take would a new prop fix it? I don’t remember it sounding like that until I replaced the fuselage and swapped motor/prop over. I don’t believe prop has any damage being a push prop

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Gotta dig in and see if the prop is out of balance, or if you have a magnet thrown in the motor, or some other mechanical binding. Once you find it, you need to resolve it so you don't get into a dangerous condition.
      If the servos are making noise, like when you SHIFT the plane in your hand, that's normal...but if the prop / motor makes noise, you need to check it out.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks. But in my case I found that after applying more elevator trim it all balanced out so it must just be not enough trim. However, that is clearly at odds with the normal set-up so I'll get it back to basics and start from scratch. I've been having such fun with this Cub and flown about 20 times now. It's my first RC aircraft and so very easy to fly in SAFE. I've been a pilot so know the basics of course but I found your video so helpful. If you know how to fly, this plane is a great option, but if you're concerned about your skills from years ago, you might think about getting in the smaller options. My impression is that once a pilot, always a pilot...unless you're had to relearn use of your hands from an injury or some such thing...

      Puffiness is not good. I have run packs that are puffy from early on, and they run just fine, while others have had horror stories of packs catching fire (I've NEVER had this happen, except when I put a nail through them).

    Hi,
    I’m just getting into RC planes I’ve only flown RC helis for the last few years.
    I’m interested in the UMX Timber or the Sport Cub Or the Aeroscout.
    I believe all will work with a Dxe transmitter but wondering what you recommend for a starter and why.
    In my inexperience I’m most interested in the aeroscout for its size / speed / agility but also interested in the UMX Timber since I may fly mostly in the evenings and at the park accross the street in somewhat confined space.
    Have you / would you review the Aeroscout?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can fly (collective pitch) helicopters, you can probably fly a plane pretty easily. The skills are VERY similar....but planes are easier in some ways, and harder in other ways.
      I would highly recommend the Sport Cub S UMX, but if you want to skip to my next recommendation, the Timber UMX would be a GREAT option too, but slightly more costly...however, it's WAY more capable and more fun. Both have SAFE, which will help you keep your plane in one piece, as you get used to the slightly different controls.
      As you can imagine, flying a plane does require more room, and make sure you cut the throttle to zero when you think you're going to hit the ground....not 100% throttle to avoid a crash, as you may have learned with heli's.
      Go for it! You CAN do it, and probably do it already, you just don't know it!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Forgot to answer about the Aeroscout...I don't know. Sorry, I don't have one, so I can't speak to it's capabilities.
      Go for the Timber UMX. It's a Great option, and you already have the transmitter to get up and running. You won't be disappointed ;)

      Brian Phillips I think for the evening sessions at the park accross the street the UMX Timber will be awesome. Appreciate your insights on it being much more capable than the Sport Cub. There is a plane for you here - amzn.to/35T9lRe - slightly bigger at 90" vs the Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m at 84". I bet you'd be about $700-1000 in it if you [stupidly] use all eFlite's [overpriced and/or under performing] parts - JK, they're nice, but expensive. This is an AWESOME ARF kit. It would also be my "preferred" plane, but we have so much we need at the moment for our new property that this will just have to do ;)
