Todd - this is what we do here ;) Welcome! Come back for more. We have literally THOUSANDS of videos to help people get started. This hobby has a steep learning curve, and we aim to help get people over the initial hurdles and flying as quick as possible. We want a world full of RC addicts (just like me) ;)
There are four things we like to see: 1) unboxing 2) build video 3) radio setup | preflight checks 4) maiden flight; flight characteristics, tips, handling, &c Thanks for this video; very nice, has well prepared me for my own Cub SS experience.
Sounds like I showed you what you need to see ;) BTW, this plane is WONDERFUL! Check you prop a few flights in (the spinner tightness) I had mine pull off in a hammerhead...but all is well, I just flew dead stick from the neighbors side and made a perfect landing, and my father-in-law watched the prop, spinner float down, totally undamaged ;) Had her flying in 3 minutes!!! I did experience some damage to my cowl, but HH helped me out on this.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks Brian; actually I already have an upgrade ordered for it-- wooden prop 16x7 , and chrome spinner (honestly I think Horizon should have done that anyway, but whatever. I was wondering about the prop coming loose; now I know. Tnx again.
I'm so glad you enjoy that part. It's a necessary evil of the hobby, but so much easier than it was years ago...but without a starting point, it's almost insurmountable without help or significant past experience, so I make it a point to walk through these steps. I make tediously long videos for this reason, and many are very annoyed by it....glad you've found some value in it Carrie!
you prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know a tool to get back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Albert Randall i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Coming from someone who has very little knowledge about battery powered planes, this was very interesting and entertaining. You really know what you're talking about and I love the passion you have for flying! Great job Brian!
I enjoyed your video. I just finished the little brother to the Carbon Z, the Carbon Cub S2 1.3 m. Assembly wise they look very similar. Hopefully we'll get some good weather and I can try to fly mine. I've never flown an rc plane before.
The Carbon Z Cub 2.1m is a different beast, and I know you'll want one soon ;) It is amazing, but you'll LOVE the 1.3m in the mean time - Good Luck John!
Hi Brian yes it was the umx j3 cub...still have it and still fly it from time to time...when I do fly it I get quite nostalgic as it was the first plane I flew and my son also...it brings back fun memories..and I totally agree it’s a great little plane ...thank you again for the videos your passion and enthusiasm for this hobby is fantastic..best wishes Chris
Thanks Chris! Did you see the Tundra Tires, Flaps, and LED's I added to my J3 Cub UMX? It makes the plane like the Carbon Z Cub SS, only small ;) If you didn't, you might want to check it out, at your convenience... th-cam.com/play/PLXTH0DstRDc7-FkR87AdlsSFldlxcRdiN.html
That plane is excellent too! Esteban has one, and we fly it all the time...even though it's been killed at least 10 times, and brought back to life a little less awesome each time...but still so much fun!!!
Dude thanks so much for the awesome video. I love the dynamic between you and your wife. And "SS" should stand for super sport. Chevrolet brotherrrrrrr. God bless you guys!
My Carbon Cub S+ just came in today, Im getting back into the hobby. Once I get things all situated, Ill be ordering a Carbon Z Cub. Awesome to see an unboxing
Thanks Brian, so far so great. I'm new to the sport and have been flying the Cessna Carbon Z. I love the plane but usually take an extra three front nose gear assemblies with me when I go flying. I think this Cub might be a little sturdier for my needs. Keep up the great work!
Thaaank you very much brian for the tipp, that you have to put on the EC-5 connector first🙏😂 and THEN weld it together😂 i also tried.... and tried.... but with your info it worked! I also have the Carbon Cub Z ss 👍🔥 Greetings from Switzerland🇨🇭
I have the blue one. I adapted the 1/4 scale Cub gear on it with full rubber air tires. I flew it today in fact. Love that old Cub. Might need the red one, for a full hanger. Thanks for the review!
I was thinking of just getting the pneumatic tires, since these foam wheels, while light, seem kinda "bouncy" if you ask me...also the plane refuses to do anything but track PERFECTLY straight...which is tough with such a floaty STOL plane. I'm concerned I'll have a nose over rolling off, or back onto my "Runway" ;)
Are you running the 6" or the 4"??? 4" - www.horizonhobby.com/45-wheels%3A-carbon-cub-15cc-p-han506515 6" - www.horizonhobby.com/big-wheels--6-p-dub600rv ...I bet either inflatable choice would be good, but just wondering what you're running
No criticism Brian just putting it out there. Just sharing a little knowledge. I am a full size aircraft builder and test pilot as well as an rc flyer and builder so any time I can share a little knowledge it may just help someone. Just building a cub now for a friend and found a realy bad new servo in the wing so we will see how they go with warranty and replacement. I took a video and sent to them. It appears not to have any shaft bearings, wobbles at least 2-3mm. All the best.
If they don't take care of you, I'd be amazed, or you're being way too nice :) I get new parts from Horizon Hobby every time there's an issue....but you do have to be somewhat "firm" without being a total jerk, and even the occasionally difficult call with HH will yield results. I got into a pretty good yelling match with one of their reps, and by the time we both cooled down, they were replacing the plane. It's kinda like dealing with any warranty from a decently reputable company, they're gonna try to protect themselves, but this is EXCEPTIONAL service in the RC community ;) If you don't get it taken care of, please come back and comment. I'm always keeping an eye out to see how these vendors take care of people (me included!) Thanks for being a part of our little community here! Cool to have full scale guys in the crowd!
You will LOVE it! One tip - Recheck your prop adapter after the first couple flights, mind pulled off the end and I dead stick landed it with only a couple scrapes on the cowel, where the prop popped off...but then was flying in 10 minutes, and HH send a replacement cowel. LOVE the plane!
I need to get my wife to watch this video. 36:54 to around 37:50ish pretty much sums it all up. I’m only in this 4 months with 7 planes (taking up a significant corner of the bedroom while I finish converting the garage to a maintenance and storage hangar) and she doesn’t understand where all this is headed. Clearly, I’m in the infant stages of the “small plane now” phase. I know 100% I’ll still be in this hobby 5 years from now, so I might as well show her what the future looks like. lol.
Hey Brian. I actually just picked up a Carbon Z cub SS along with a NX8 Transmitter, 5500mah 60c 6s Gens Ace lipo battery and the Spektrum S2100 smart charger at my local hobby store around 3:00pm (CAD) 2021/09/03. This all set me back just over $1,700 CAD after tax. I was watching your video on how to set this thing up. Everything was going great, until next thing I know a hole for where you attack the springs for the landing gear was missing, and the landing gear spring was bent. Very big disappointment for me. I have the receipts, and hopefully the hobby store can fix it up for free, as they sold me a defective product. Thanks, for making this video that I have been watching until 12:00am.
I hope they will make it right to you. And yes, that's a lot of cash to plop all at once, but when you see her in the air you'll quickly forget the woes of earning all that money. It will soon be overshadowed by the amazing flying experience. Don't forget all but about $500-600 of it will be invested in future planes too, so just remember, it's WAY expensive at first, then you get addicted and stop caring how expensive it is - LOL ;) JK Good luck, and thanks for being her with us!
Hi Brian, Dont give up the build program , because you find out any thing that is not right with the build which i find very very helpful and i hope other people do as well, so please dont. Thank you.
I'm glad you think so, and totally agree this could be a valuable intel to others, but regrettably, most just want to see it fly. Psssssssst...if you want to see it fly, just watch Horizon Hobby's stock video... this can be our little secret - LOL
Greetings from Upstate NY. I feel like I know you, and Megan with her nice filming, after watching so many of your rc video builds & reviews. I appreciate that you include everything in your video's. Even if some feel that they're long, there are many good little tips that may help someone. Even if it's just knowing what to expect, i.e. that we might have trouble with the little nuts lol for the landing gear etc. or trying to find the hole, installing the rudder, (1:35:20) too funny!!! The top hinge gave me a little trouble to, but I knew what to expect from watching you guys. You both are an enjoyable team to watch and listen to!!! I just got the Carbon-Z Cub 2.1m plane and am really excited to get it in the air, but may wait for thin ca, just ordered it so I can complete the rudder section. The rudder is on and I have medium ca, but not sure if I should use it or wait. Not sure the medium will flow into the ca hinge joint far enough. What do you think? Would you wait for the thin ca or use the medium? This will be my first plane in many years, and I want to do it right. Got busy doing other things over the years and took a break from rc for the most part since around 2007. I've been in rc though since I built my first Associated car and Dumas boat in 1978. Since then I've built a bunch of boats and cars, glo, electric and gas with our son and daughter. Our friends would join us too. We've had many good hours together with our rc models (mostly cars and boats though). I had a modified Raptor 60 gas Heli too. It was big and I loved flying it! Got to where I could even cut the grass inverted if I wanted to lol. I like all rc, but prefer electric for the most part now, as it's powerful, clean and quiet (for the neighbors). We live in the country too, so noise isn't really a factor, as nobody is very close by. We run everything right here from our farm. Since the lock down to lower the curve of the virus spread, I got up into the attic and got out some of our rc stuff. We're diving deep...back into rc again... I talked it over with my wife a couple days ago and got the green light to order my wife a radio & plane so we can fly together. I'll build, set up, help her learn to fly it and take care of her plane, batteries and radio. She's never flown a r/c model before, but I feel she'll do fine, we'll take our time and I'll get her very comfortable on the simulator first (I first got one before I built my helicopter, and that's how I learned so quickly how to fly it so well). When in TN, my friend Mike (a pro Heli competitor), helped me when I was getting started with Heli's. He recommended highly to get a sim that used my radio & do every maneuver, and every set up change (i.e. changing to inverted v throttle & 30 deg pos and neg pitch for flying inverted etc) on the sim first, to get totally proficient with what ever you are learning, whether doing rolls, flips, engine failure landing etc on the sim first then start easy and do the trick with the model. I never crashed the Heli and I could do anything I wanted with it in less than 6 mos! Most damage I had was a several light tail strikes during landings in gusty wind that I shouldn't have been flying in, but that's it. Nothing big, less than $10 replacing tail rotor gears, just to be sure everything was good. I highly recommend sims for anyone too! The sim made it super easy! If used as a tool, it will save you lots of time and $$ not crashing while stretching your comfort zone boundaries and trying new set-ups. Learning new tricks with a heli can be challenging because the pilot must relearn the move whenever orientation is changed, later it becomes natural. I got my wife a Spektrum DX6 6-Channel DSMX Transmitter and a Timber X 1.2m BNF Basic with AS3X and SAFE Select. Hopefully in a few weeks we'll be flying our first flights together! Can't wait! Sorry guys this comment is so long. Didn't mean to be writing a little book lol. Thanks again Brian and Megan/camera crew, for your awesome video's! Keep up the good work! You and your family stay safe and healthy!
Medium CA will work, but you'll have to work quickly. Start by coating both sides of the FIRST HALF of the hinge material on the 3 or 4 hinges, then stick them into the tail section. Coat only the side you want to sick in there first. When you're ready, coat both the other sides of each of the 3 or 4 hinges, and force it in quickly. Thin CA is super easy, since you'll literally just wick the CA into the hinge material after the hinges are in place. Also, thin CA will break a bit easier at the folding point, but regardless of what CA you go with, you'll want to exercise the rudder a bit before you expect to fly. Also, you can cheat a bit on the second "half"...just stick the tip into the fuse end tail section...about 1/8"...just so you don't have to line it up with glue on it...then you can coat both sides and push the rest of the way. If you do this, you'll want to have a q-tip or paper towel ready to quickly pull off the excess - QUICKLY - and on both sides. I'm kinda beating a dead horse here, and making it sound really hard, but it's not...just go for it, but be ready so you don't screw up your beauty there. I would not wait, but it's not my plane ;) You can tell if it's gonna be secure when you're done...just tug on the rudder. If you screw it up, you'll just have to pull it out and try again. CA will ship off the hinge material. I can say with certitude, if I had a Carbon Z Cub sitting there staring me down, I'd build it ASAP!!! We love flying from home. We got away with it in town, but knew that wasn't sustainable. When neighbors started to turn over, I could read the writing on the walls :( Now that we have this place, the only thing stopping us from flying would be our over-reaching, bloated, Federal Government...let's hope they're too busy to be regulating our toys for a few months at least!!! I get the long winded thing...have you met me?!??! LOL
@@BrianPhillipsRC I was going to go ahead and glue it as you suggested, but I noticed two things that I hadn't before. One is that it's medium-thick not medium, and two, when I was about to open it (never opened yet) it says in red letters "To cure properly, this product must be used with PT-28 foam safe kicker." I've never used glue that required a kicker on a model yet. I've seen you use it though, and I will in the future. Since I need to wait for the batteries anyway...it's very windy, but nice outside and I have a lot of yard work and other things that needs attending to anyway lol. I have kicker ordered with the glue too, so I'll be set later. Thanks for your help Brian! Your reply isn't long winded, I appreciate the detailed instructions, less chance for an uh-oh!
I am starting my self with the cud as well great plane.tryed to go to my Corsair ended badly running before walking.but like you i will get there thanks for your videos 👍🛩
@@richardoneill1965 I am Angeline Suman Dutch origin I live in here in France since a good time of my life I am in the 37 precisely in the city of vernou-sur-brenne and you?
Have one. Was able to get it second hand for 300 Canadian dollars. Winter is here so may not get to fly it this year but couldn't pass up on the deal. 😄
Doug - This is the PERFECT winter plane!!! You can fly skis, water floats, or just use the stock tundra tires...she's up for anything!!! And you will kick yourself, if you wait till next year, when you realize how amazing it flies!
Having an issue with mine. Throttle comes up but dies almost right away. 4s 5000 bat which it should run on fine according to horizon. Really want to get it out tomorrow. Doesn't matter if you bring it up slow or fast. Just like it runs out if juice...
Watching a little more and yes your neighbor is so right such a small price for the little cub (which I started off with,) and think what you paid for your TX. I’m afraid to add up the cost off all my equipment let alone the planes. LOL got to go and watch more, whats 3 or 4 hours to finish this one!!!! Time to watch the build. Until the next break. Later Danny
Hey Brian awesome video, and camera crew, awesome filming. Your my new favorite tutorialist(if that’s even a word), what I really like is the way you show us how it flys first then you go into the build, and what’s really a plus imo, is the radio setup, all important info. Don’t know if you have made a video of the Flightline Foke Wolfe 190, but I’d love to see you make a video of that model. Thanks, and don’t stop making these videos. They really are great.
Great to hear! We aim to please, but there are a lot of suggestions and we try our best to keep as large a group of people happy as we can ;) As for the Foke Wolfe 190, no, but I like the flightline planes, and would consider doing one.
If you want to see me review any items from MotionRC, please CALL them and ask them to work with me ;) I've been trying to break into their impenetrable defenses for years to no avail. I wanted to start out with the AL37, and they told me no :(..... They do their own "in house" marketing, and while they do a fantastic job of showcasing their planes, it sure DOESN'T give a real customer experience, in my personal opinion. So, after hearing "no" about 5 times, I said, I'm too busy now to get what I have on my plate done, so I'll just work with their biggest competitors - their choice, definitely NOT mine...I'd work with them too any day. Maybe they'll come around when I get to half a million subscribers??? :) Either way, theirs your "backstory" - hope you enjoyed that small dose of inside baseball. Come back for more DankSkunk!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the quick reply Brian, that’s a real shame that Motion RC has such an attitude. They have some nice a/c that I’d love to see you highlight, I will ask them, but I doubt that I’d have any better luck. Oh well, I love Horizons products too, and you are doing a great job reviewing their products.
I use A for gear, then I divert SAFE Select to the F key, straight up from the throttle stick (right???) As for my layout, I do B for flaps, and always do it as close to the same as I can. My brain can only handle small and completely necessary changes ;)
hi Brian, for your viewers ( as well as you ) I have a serious tip for proper propeller installation on the Cub, and I am posting my upgrade spinner and prop parts so that folks can easily get an aluminum (Chrome) spinner and beechwood prop (very classic) that will match the Carbon Cub SS. First, the prop that comes with the model is NOT machined on the back side properly (off center, not deep enough) so that the prop is NOT really tight on the shaft (you will lose the spinner and prop!). The back side of the prop needs to be machined about 5mm in, the diameter of the outside collet shaft... so that when the prop is squeezed between the two serrated plates (to hold the prop) the collet is ALSO actually closing in tight on the motor shaft (words to the wise) ! Incidentally, I had to machine (hand, dremel tool) the back side of the beechwood prop also to get the aluminum spinner collect to seat properly into the prop. Ok, I got the beechwood prop from Xoar International LLC (duh) and I got the aluminum spinner (chrome look) from eflite part no. EFLSP250. The amazon links are posted below: www.amazon.com/XOAR-Electric-Airplane-Propeller-Blade/dp/B01AXOX9MS www.amazon.com/flite-2-50-Aluminum-Spinner-Collets/dp/B001DJ4XDC PS. The Cub SS BL60 motor shaft requires the 6mm collet; spinner comes with both 5mm and 6mm collets.
Yep, I HAD my spinner and prop come off. Luckily, I was able to bring her in for a dead stick landing...5 minutes later, I was up and flying again, but the cowl was damaged when the prop came off ;( Horizon sent me a replacement, which was very much appreciated. As for the beach wood prop, it is beautiful!
Well, I decided to buy it TODAY finally. The price is not low for a EPP aircraft, though the aircraft is good equipped. Because I have the E-flite CESNA 150 2,1 m already (Cessna with good opinion of users), so that one should be also mine (?) Thank you for your video. I have to watch this to the end (?). Very interesting material (as always) and another point of view.
You WON'T be disappointed! This plane flies excellent! It's a bit of a pain to assemble, but that part is short lived, and then you get to bask in it's beauty - on the ground and in the air!!!
Ohhh-Yeahhh Babyyy! Good Thing You Spent The BIG Bucks For Them Tall Doors! You Almost Could Give Your Smallest Kid Rides On It!? Beats The Heck Outta Them Longgg Roll-Outs w/Them Jets & Power Gliders!!! LOL Nice Job Flyin Son... Amazing How You Can Fly That BIG Thang Soo Easy In A Park Size Area!!! Now Put A Reversing ESC In Her & Clear Min-Wax On It To Keep It Pretty Also!!! *Part 2 - Dang I Thought It Would Be A Cessna AG-Wagon For Crop Dusting! LMAO Thanks
LOL - I think if I were going to crop dust, I'd need some crop first :) LOL You know I never did get that tractor...still keeping an eye out. The two we found were just enough more than I wanted to spend that I might have been convinced to spend about 10 X more - LOL!!!!! (That's PARTLY YOUR fault! ;) Side note: Now every time I see a dump truck, of late, I'm thinking of the monthly payment for it LOL
@@BrianPhillipsRC Sowwy... Yea My 2006 Super 16 Custom Mack Was Only $2800 A Month + $550 For $2M Ins To Work It & I Made $125 @ Hour... 12 -15 Hrs A Day x 6 Days A Week...+ $300 -$400 A Day In Diesel? LMAO
Thanks Todd! I feel like I'll have a better handle on it after a few more flights. This was my maiden, and I can't wait to get her flying again!!! Only flown her two evenings, and it was only for a short time...we've been clearing some timber, and just seems to eat time like crazy! I'll put out some more footage with different battery choices soon, I hope you'll check it out ;)
It was my pleasure! I really like this one. WAY better value than the EC1500....just a lot better execution by Horizon Hobby in about every way.....EXCEPT for LED's - at this price point, and size there's really ZERO excuse for not having even simple Nav lights.
Please dont get rid of the build portion :) all 3 of my planes (carbon cub 1.3m, A-10 EDF, and this Cub 2.1m) were built sitting here watching and following along with you :)
Did you adjust the rudder during build? I experience that my plane hasn’t the same (wide) movement in the rudder, despite following build instructions. Using a DX8 Gen2 transmitter, fyi, with 2.05 firmware on it.
If I don't show it, then I didn't do it...but I honestly can't remember. If you want more rudder, move the clevis to the inside hole on the rudder, just know that you might see some oscillation at very top end of speed range due to AS3X slightly over-correcting...BUT I don't see mine doing it.
Which 6S pack is best 30C, 50C or 100C? Ive had a lot of puffing issues in the past and my packs were warm after flights. Im guessing that means my C rating wasnt high enough.
The 100C is the "best", but I don't know if I buy the added value...higher C rating is a better battery. Larger leads, more protection for cells, bigger connectors, etc.
Hi Brian. What is wrong with minus 130% of the throttle cut. Why is this not good? What is the impact? I want to do it right and safe. And safty is the most important part, where I fly…
It doesn't make a big difference if it's set at the begging. If you reprogram the throttle range of your ESC and accidentally put the throttle cut on when you lower the stick, and it's set to -130%, then when you turn off the throttle cut, your motor will start.
Great video! Although I would beg to differ on the points you made at 1:41:30 about not tightening the linkage on the control arm. I feel you should tighten the linkage, so the nut doesn’t come loose. The ball joint is there to create the movement for the linkage, not the bolt in the control arm.
Hey, while you're at it - check the SPINNER is still tight on the prop shaft. I had mine come off mid flight - all is well, and dead stick landed without incident. We found and installed the spinner and prop (all in one piece) BUT I damaged the cowl when the prop popped off. This is also why I was having vibration that came and went. Just a heads up :)
Just bought this plane last night. Looking forward to putting it together today and hopefully seeing your radio set up sooner than later! Edit: well sooner came 45 minutes in haha. Seems like this fussy lil BNF plane should stand for build and fly rather than bind and fly.
Yep, it was a bit of a pain, especially with the main landing gear assembly, but honestly, you could do it in 2-3 hours without the filming part making everything take longer :) I try to make links for each part of the build, see in the description, just for future reference ;) Thanks for watching - YOU WILL LOVE THIS PLANE!!!
What about when the plane is inverted the pressure on the clevis pins and struts is compression? That is why you have jury struts to stop the main struts from bending. Also when the plane is in negative g's no strength in the struts. Re; inverted loops etc.
I understand what you're saying, but not exactly sure if this is a question or a comment. The wings are VERY strong. To be totally honest, I've never given it a second thought. My only issue with this plane, to date, is that the prop came off in flight!!! I landed without incident....dead stick, as expected. My father-in-law watched the prop and spinner come down, and I got it and put it back on, tightened everything and was flying in like 5-10 minutes. This was kinda "my bad" for not noticing the collet had loosened, but kinda a HH issue in that it wouldn't have loosened that quickly, if you ask me...BUT I was hammer-heading the plane when it happened, and only very minor damage to the cowling...which Horizon replace for me at no cost - way to go horizon!...so I guess, lesson learned. I LOVE this plane. It's a solid platform. The only thing I don't like is the fact that you kinda have to load the lipo in the "chop zone"...but they did install a switch, but the switch in also in the "chop zone" - LOL....otherwise, I love the plane. In fact, my only complaint is that it's TOO easy to fly - LOL :)
@@BrianPhillipsRC Got it out today. I didn't even think about it having digital servos. I have not used digital servos for years. I forgot they constantly make noise. We had enough wind I got to do some backward flying with full flaps. This things a blast. lol
Hi Brian what do you think about the power plant on the carbon z- 60 amp esc- is that a little low with 6s? How are the servos? Thanks! Have you heard of any issues with servos or motor or esc?
It's good - I've never had any issues, and my servos have been great, BUTTTTTT....many people fly the CRAP out of their Carbon Z Cub, and they pay the price for it ;) I'm pretty nice to it, except for hitting power lines and keeping flying, and losing props while flying, and keep flying, and other non-sense....maybe I'm also no "nice" to mine.... Oh well, still running STRONG ;)
So on the landing gear bolt and nut but the bolt from the back so the nut is facing towards the front that way you can use the allen wrench pretty common sense.
Would you please put your thought(s) into a sentence or a group of sentences? I can't understand what you're saying, since there isn't any punctuation.
@@BrianPhillipsRC lmao well if you need punctuation .. then i rest my case commen sense is out of the window. Why would you. Face the bolt towards the center of the landing gear?? Instead of out on the open end where you can use the allen key🤦♂️🤦♂️. I've been flying 14 plus years and have 3 turbine jets and 2 of the carbon cubs and hand full of other planes.
What battery is best for the cub z ss I haven't bought any yet and I would appreciate your professional opinion on the best option for the plane battery thanks
I did pick this Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m and I love it, but to ask me which one I'd pick is not a fair question, because I didn't pick the Carbon Z Cessna 150... For me, this plane is excellent in every way, EXCEPT for two items... 1) Why no led's??? 2) It's not super easy to transport (not a big deal for me, for obvious reasons) I'd say, they're both great, but I'd be misleading you since I don't know a whole lot about the Carbon Z Cessna 150... Sorry John! Carbon Z Cessna 150 2.1m bit.ly/30PJkkD Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m bit.ly/30P5mUA I firmly believe you will love either you pick.
Not sure, it's been a long time since I did this video. I hate EC5's but LOVE IC5's the EC5's are a bit better than the EC3's which I absolutely LOATH!
Brian. are you familiar with the FMS Beaver..? What do you think of it compared to the Carbon Cub SS 2.1..? Trying to decided which one to buy....Thanks
How does this one do? I primarily fly warbirds and am looking for a good cub too. It's been between this and the hanger 9 xcub with an electric setup. Love the detail on the xcub but like the price of this one better.
The Hangar 9 is an ARF too, so it's way more expensive when you add all the goodies. I really want the Hangar 9 one, anyway ;) However, this plane is AMAZING! Obviously a balsa plane will be better, but this plane is no shlub by any stretch of the imagination. If you're even remotely interested, you will LOVE this plane!!! Do it now, and thank me later ;) Carbon-Z Cub SS 2.1m BNF - bit.ly/2RyYsid (you'll help my channel if you buy from this link...FYI)
I like this plane a LOT better than the Timber, but the Timber 1.5m is a GREAT plane and a GREAT Value....I just prefer the looks and flight characteristics of the Cub line. The Timber is almost a 3D plane...it's almost "too easy" if there's such a thing...you know?!?
For starters, you wouldn't be able to get solder to hold it, since there's be a very small amount of surface area for the solder to contact, in comparison to a fine multi strand wire. Additionally, it would be STIFF!!! You could maybe use it for a straight piece, but you'd have to overcome the solder surface area issue.
Hi Brian. My CZC ailerons flip to the left when I test out failsafe mode. According to my Spektrum programmer app and cable the failsafes are correctly set to SAFE mode for aileron, elevator and rudder, and HOLD for the others. It's like the plane will spiral to the left if it loses TX. Did yours do this too?
I never tested it, but sounds like you have SAFE programmed in to a switch that might not have been in the correct condition to turn ON when the FAILSAFE activates. Can you double check on this.
Hey Brian on the carbon cub 2.1 mm my motor is just a little loose and when I full throttle the plane the spinner prop bolt and the orange thing comes off what can I do to fix the that
You need to TORQUE that thing down WAY MORE! You're gonna cut your hands off!!!!! Make sure she's SOLID. This is a huge safety issue...please get it fixed ASAP.
I like how you said your a thumb flyer , personally and i think you might agree.... we learned to fly on old futaba/jr/airtronics 4ch radios , we didnt have swtches , thats why i think we fly with our thumbs , then when the technology changed people started learning/pinching to get to all the switches. Atleast thats how i view it
Hi Brian, I noticed that when you power the receiver up, it makes an annoying noise all the time. I am facing the same problem with same receiver AR636A but different model. Everything works fine but the receiver does not stop making that noise. Is it normal? It will go away at one point? or Do you know how to fix it. Thanks in advance for your help.
AS3X will make the model kinda "hum" but this is normal. Some models are a lot worse than others. It will only start making noise after the AS3X kicks in, or after you give 25% or more throttle.
I noticed you didnt try a 7000mah 6s which is the largest battery they recommend for it. Will you be trying that in the future? Also do you have the elevator/ aileron mix adjusted? If so what is a good percent?
I don't own a 7000mAh 6S. I'd love to try it out, but won't be buying one that huge, but I WILL be test flying with 6S 5000mAh 60-120C Turnigy HD, and a ZOP 6S 4000mAh 70C Lopo, as well as trying to fly her on DUAL 3S 3000mAh Packs in Series, as well as any other combinations I can come up with. That video will follow shortly, if I can ever get some decent weather. It's been really windy and crappy out...which is to be expected with fall coming in like a freight train :(
@@BrianPhillipsRC I have had mine for 3 months and haven't been able to fly it. I bought 6s 7000 mah 30c. I am still a novice, and trying to fly without safe mode so waiting to fly the carbon z ss.
I totally agree! It's not perfect, but I REALLY love this plane! Some day, if I every have a few million bucks tucked away I want to get a REAL Carbon Cub SS with glass panel ;) (This is a nice way of saying I probably won't have one - LOL)
I just got the same plane and my as3x is not working i was wondering is you have a solution for that. If so that wold be much appreciated and i have the dx6e transmitter 👍and good flying
Are you asking about STABILIZATION (AS3X) or SAFE (Auto Leveling - Sensor Aided Flight Envelope). Have you watched the Radio Setup part? You have to make an assignment for whatever channel and switch you want to control the SAFE Select on/off. You also have to bind a certain way to activate SAFE Select. Re watch that part, if you're not sure, and you'll probably see what I'm talking about.
Are you talking about the PINs that hold the wing STRUTS at the FUSE? If so, you gotta get some help. It's HARD to pull them into alignment to get the wide part through, without it popping out before you can get the Key Pins in....
@@BrianPhillipsRC yes that’s what I was talking about and I got it and when I try to go Down on the elevator the down stick the plane doesn’t go up and I have it full throttle
I fly so many planes, I don't really get to "pick" anymore (well only once in a while)... I like the Carbon Z Cub better, but it's also a lot more plane, it's more expensive, and its HUGE ;)
Dude you need a good quality set of angle ball divers and nut drivers would have made that gear install a 5 minute job. I’ve watched a few of your other videos you have an awesome beautiful new home there. I can’t imagine you can’t find a place to make a RC workshop instead of your kitchen.🤔
I have a whole spot for it, but isn't put together yet. So many choices, and don't want to rush it...although I miss badly, my shop from our old home....if you watch some of my older videos you can see that shop.
Oh yeah, I have ball ended allen wrench sets, but I was way too lazy to get them out, and I didn't want to do this assembly with any special tools, if possible. I should get some, just for sanity reasons.
Got the blue carbon ss 2.1 cub. Floats came with it. Some parts but not sure if it’s all there. You have a video showing putting the floats on this? Thanks for all the great videos
@@BrianPhillipsRC Just did my best to figure it out and it went smoothly. Did my first water takeoff and landing with ease. Thanks again for all the help. Looking forward to your pontoon video one day. 🤜🤛
Best video i found, really helped me! I do have on slight issue though, when i switch from AS3X mode to safe my rates and expo settings change back to default and is far to sensitive. How can i combat this?
Your EXPO and RATES can be controlled from another switch, separate from the SAFE Select switch that you designated...maybe that would be the easiest option to fix your issue? All you have to do is hold the sticks at the corners and then flip another unused switch back and forth five times (I think that's the right count)...and the controls will "dance" ...then you can change your EXPO and RATES independently. All that being said, SAFE will greatly reduce the control authority you have when flying this and any other SAFE Select equipped plane. It's for this reasons that I rarely use SAFE, but if you need it, or want it...I don't mean to fault you. Everyone flying RC is at a slightly different spot ;)
Hi Brian! I really enjoy your Horizon, Carbon Z videos. Right now I'm flying drones but your videos and the Horizon videos may have caused there to be one of the Carbon Zs in my future. The only suggestion I could make is; at least with this video, if you had used a wireless or even a wired lapel microphone instead of the camera's mic, that would have eliminated the room acoustics (echo) and your narrative would have been much louder and more understandable. Nice work! David
This is an old video...we have since gone through TWO sets of lav mics and we're on our Third Revision of Lav mics, so you're advice has already been implemented ;)
This one, but it's a LOT more expensive, and WAY BIGGER...this is 2.1m, while the Timber is 1.5m...it's like Twice the size. Bigger is not necessarially better, since the larger planes are more effort to get from here to there, and some people can't handle them for this reason, so for you, you might need the Timber, but really want the Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m Carbon Cub S2 1.3m bit.ly/3bS2r3O Timber Turbo Night X UMX bit.ly/3cEjplB BOTH Are great planes. The Timber is a less expensive option, by a long shot too, for what it's worth. I love them both for different reasons.
I was going to watch the entire video until I looked at the length of it. (Crap 3hours and 38 minutes) but that is good I enjoy your videos. I was going to watch it but had to stop, no time right now. I will watch it all with no fast forward. I bought the Turbo Timber awhile back and love it along with other timbers, as I’ve mentioned in the past. I want the Carbon-Z SS but need to wait. ($$$$$$$).talk later Danny Danny from Tennessee
Common Danny - you've failed the challenge!!! LOL, JK - I put out these super short videos for people without cable or satellite TV...this way you can watch every day for like 3 or 4 days in a row - JK. I don't really expect that anyone will watch ALL of it, but just follow the links in the description to see the parts of the process they'd like to see.
@@BrianPhillipsRC that's what sucks I watch it down to the last second. And I don't have a boring life. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. But fun to watch.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Even on the website of HH it doesn't say anything about that being in the Carbon Z Cub that's a contributing factor for me making the purchase of it 🤔
Help me Brian...this is my second plane. I seem to have it all set up with my DX6e, but my elevator is in the down position too far when the plane is sitting idle on the ground. I know the servo horn and linkage is adjustable, but just wondering, have I set up something wrong.
Does the elevator move when you pivot on the mains? (without moving the elevator control on your transmitter) If so, TURN OFF SAFE...if you bound with SAFE, you might have forgotten to ASSIGN the switch you want to use...thus it's still on "all the time" - MAKE SURE YOU ACTIVATE THE CHANNEL TO THE SWITCH YOU WANT TO USE OR IT WON'T WORK!!!!!! Now, repeat (with safe off) - does the elevator move? NO - GOOD, now see where you want it... Do mechanical trim. NOW, make sure you have plenty of play UP & DOWN - if you don't you might nose over on takeoff. Correct for above. Fly it and love it. P.S. I assume you're talking about the Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m - this is a crazy second plane!!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC ...thanks man, i haven't been able to select a switch for the "safe" yet. I did it the way the manual said with no luck. I'll bind it again with "safe" and try it again. Yes it is the 2.1. Haven't flown it yet. Want to make sure everything is correct with it.
I bet you'd puff them quick. You could technically make it work, but I fear you'd destroy both packs. IF you did 4 of them...two in parallel and two sets of two in series, I think you might be able to make it happen.
I heard the mini-apprentice would be a really good one for me to get for beginner. i really wanted a Carbon Cub-Z (you know, the big blue one, i mean really huge one) but maybe the mini apprentice is the one for me.
You should bind your airplane first before attaching the push rods to the horns that way the servos will balance out beforehand and you will have proper alignment
I'm not sure what you're talking about. They (speaking of control surface positions) will go wherever they go, regardless of when you bind the plane. Once you've got the radio system setup and bound, then you'll see where things end up. Maybe I misunderstood your comment?
Hi Brian yes I watched the umx j3cub mod video when you first did it....seems a long time ago now lol..and I fitted tundra tires to my cub after watching how to do it ...I have seen wireless nav lights now how fast things move on thanks again best wishes Chris
I've been subscribed for 4ish years. You just keep getting better and better. I forgot we both taught ourselves to fly right about the same time and with the same plane. I ended up giving my UMX Sport Cub to a friend, so he could learn to fly. I still fly the hell out of the 1.3m Sport Cub and the UMX J3 Cub. I picked up the CZ Cessna about a mouth ago and have been really enjoying that big bird. I couldn't resist the urge any longer and just smashed the buy button on the CZ Cub, can't wait! Side question, do you still have your Freewing 64mm A-10? I sold mine after just one flight with the new E-flite 64mm A-10. Anyways, keep it up!
Thank you Mike!!! You understand how far we've come! As for the Freewing 64mm - TOTALLY AGREE - and haven't flown it again, and probably won't now that I have a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better one. (Sorry, I think I forgot a few "much'es"). This plane is like 100 times more fun and easy to fly and powerful than the Freewing...which is why I NEED Eflite to release the F-14 they haven't been talking about [ever] so I can be satisfied, and will never need another plane (lie)... LOL P.S. I have been working on comments for TWO days now, and I'm reminded, as we get a new "batch" of subscribers and a load of views from likely TH-cam recommendations, how we always get a lot of pricks and dick holes that I get to deal with. I had to block THREE in one day - WTF! So very nice to have a long time subscriber make a kind remark - Thanks! It helps that you have been around to see the improvements we've worked out over the years, and have an appreciation for them...but some of these kids are such little bitches. If I talked like this to another kid, back when I was their age, I would have put on my ass...now they're just keyboard warriors, and the future LOSERS of society, unfortunately.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Unfiltered Brian is awesome! I hear you though! I'm in my mid 40's and don't have time for that shit. I'm also really into RC Crawlers. I know that the RC Hobby in general needs new people to survive, but it just seems that the more RTR ground based vehicles, or SAFE equipped air vehicles that come out, the more of the wrong kind of people get into the hobby. Before it used to be, "I just did a bad landing and broke my gear. I should really practice more." Now it's like, "These landing gear suck!" The same kind of thing happens in the Crawling world, but replace gear with axle housings. They use it in a way or at higher speeds than what it was designed for and them blame the manufacture when something breaks. Shit's crazy. Keep doing your thing!
Yeah, totally agree. It's too bad. We need to get as many people into this hobby as possible to make three things happen... 1) Drive down the price 2) Improve the technology 3) Build a larger group to keep representation against an ever-growing government bureaucracy that wants to inject itself into every aspect of our lives!!! ...it's totally disgusting that the last item needs to be on there, but it DOES - we need to have a larger collective voice, and presence as we area forced to lobby to keep freedoms like the ability to fly a plane for enjoyment.
ME TOO!!! I got up early hoping to fly, trees blowing too and fro. I've had three opportunities and flown on two of them...the third, I squandered because Esteban (my flying buddy and occasional cameo on my channel) "couldn't fly because he was going to run with his wife" - BAD EXCUSE!!! LOL....but I guess I could have held off on cutting down a HUGE stump, and flown myself. Lesson I relearned, when it's fall, and the weather's good....FLY!!!
As a someone new to this stuff this video was a freaking gold mine of information. Many many thanks!
Todd - this is what we do here ;) Welcome! Come back for more. We have literally THOUSANDS of videos to help people get started. This hobby has a steep learning curve, and we aim to help get people over the initial hurdles and flying as quick as possible. We want a world full of RC addicts (just like me) ;)
Plus I want to thank you for all the hard work you and Cam crew do You help out more people than you know
Thanks Caesar - We're glad to help how we can!
There are four things we like to see:
1) unboxing
2) build video
3) radio setup | preflight checks
4) maiden flight; flight characteristics, tips, handling, &c
Thanks for this video; very nice, has well prepared me for my own Cub SS experience.
Tnx again.
I love how you show the build and also setting up your radio. I will be looking at your other videos.

@Albert Randall it worked and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
great stuff! well laid out, great presentation! Never stop those build videos. After being out of the hobby for 5 years, this was great to find!
Coming from someone who has very little knowledge about battery powered planes, this was very interesting and entertaining. You really know what you're talking about and I love the passion you have for flying! Great job Brian!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! This is something I'm really passionate about...you should hear me at work ;)
That thing sounds awesome! Great job Brian and "Camera Crew"!
Thanks Michael!
Hi Brian yes it was the umx j3 cub...still have it and still fly it from time to time...when I do fly it
I get quite nostalgic as it was the first plane I flew and my son also...it brings back fun memories..and I totally agree it’s a great little plane ...thank you again for the videos your passion and enthusiasm for this hobby is fantastic..best wishes Chris
Thanks Chris! Did you see the Tundra Tires, Flaps, and LED's I added to my J3 Cub UMX? It makes the plane like the Carbon Z Cub SS, only small ;) If you didn't, you might want to check it out, at your convenience...

@@BrianPhillipsRC Greetings from Dubai! Big fan here. Thanks again.
Good video I"ve been looking at that plane I had the original Sport Cub and loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
My Carbon Cub S+ just came in today, Im getting back into the hobby.
Once I get things all situated, Ill be ordering a Carbon Z Cub.
Awesome to see an unboxing
Thanks Chris! You'll love it ;)
Thanks Brian, so far so great. I'm new to the sport and have been flying the Cessna Carbon Z. I love the plane but usually take an extra three front nose gear assemblies with me when I go flying. I think this Cub might be a little sturdier for my needs. Keep up the great work!
Three?!??! WOW, expensive plane - LOL...this Carbon Z Cub 2.1 is awesome!
Nice! I'm excited for you - this plane is a BEAST!!!
4" - www.horizonhobby.com/45-wheels%3A-carbon-cub-15cc-p-han506515
6" - www.horizonhobby.com/big-wheels--6-p-dub600rv
...I bet either inflatable choice would be good, but just wondering what you're running
Well done, my friend... Your film crew needs to be more engaged like in this of many videos... Thanks Megan... :)
She sometimes likes to hide behind the camera ;) LOL
It's kinda like dealing with any warranty from a decently reputable company, they're gonna try to protect themselves, but this is EXCEPTIONAL service in the RC community ;)
If you don't get it taken care of, please come back and comment. I'm always keeping an eye out to see how these vendors take care of people (me included!)
Thanks for being a part of our little community here! Cool to have full scale guys in the crowd!
Brian, Sprayed my plane with Semi Gloss Clear Rust-Oleum came out Gorgeous !!
I bet! Hope it holds up nicely for you!
Excellent filming Brian wonderful plane . I have it on order....can't wait. Your video's are the best!
I've got the blue one.... need to pull the trigger on this one. Good flyin Brian Nice filming camera crew...👍👍
Brian, the Blue one was actually what I wanted...but they were all sold out... I definitely appreciated the upgraded mains on this V2 plane.
I know 100% I’ll still be in this hobby 5 years from now, so I might as well show her what the future looks like. lol.
LOL - I remember those day where I didn't have to build a new house and buy 10+ acres of land to partially satisfy my new hording addiction :)
Don't forget all but about $500-600 of it will be invested in future planes too, so just remember, it's WAY expensive at first, then you get addicted and stop caring how expensive it is - LOL ;) JK
Good luck, and thanks for being her with us!

Beautiful plane! Would love one when I have my own farm 😆
Why not get one BEFORE the farm??!??!
We aim to please, but there are a lot of suggestions and we try our best to keep as large a group of people happy as we can ;)
As for the Foke Wolfe 190, no, but I like the flightline planes, and would consider doing one.
Either way, theirs your "backstory" - hope you enjoyed that small dose of inside baseball.
Come back for more DankSkunk!

AWESOME! You'll LOVE IT!
beautiful bush plane!
It sure is! I love it!!!
Which switch do you usually use for retracts if you also have safe select set up? i.e. Viper.
I'm not a pincer either. I like thumbs.
I use A for gear, then I divert SAFE Select to the F key, straight up from the throttle stick (right???)
As for my layout, I do B for flaps, and always do it as close to the same as I can.
EFLSP250. The amazon links are posted below:
www.amazon.com/XOAR-Electric-Airplane-Propeller-Blade/dp/B01AXOX9MS
www.amazon.com/flite-2-50-Aluminum-Spinner-Collets/dp/B001DJ4XDC
PS.
Because I have the E-flite CESNA 150 2,1 m already (Cessna with good opinion of users), so that one should be also mine (?)
Thank you for your video. I have to watch this to the end (?). Very interesting material (as always) and another point of view.
You WON'T be disappointed! This plane flies excellent! It's a bit of a pain to assemble, but that part is short lived, and then you get to bask in it's beauty - on the ground and in the air!!!

Great video Brian as always buddy thank you for sharing
It was my pleasure! I really like this one. WAY better value than the EC1500....just a lot better execution by Horizon Hobby in about every way.....EXCEPT for LED's - at this price point, and size there's really ZERO excuse for not having even simple Nav lights.
Please dont get rid of the build portion :) all 3 of my planes (carbon cub 1.3m, A-10 EDF, and this Cub 2.1m) were built sitting here watching and following along with you :)
We don't have plans to do it, so long as a few people are still getting help from them. Thanks for sharing this with us Randy B!
Brian Phillips thank you!
@@BrianPhillipsRC i figured 50C would be sufficient
I liked that airplane better than the other one you had I love the Bush plane’s even though it is a foam plane
This plane is really nice...but it's a baby compared to your 3/4 scale planes!
What radio system do you fly with Shane?
Great video! Although I would beg to differ on the points you made at 1:41:30 about not tightening the linkage on the control arm. I feel you should tighten the linkage, so the nut doesn’t come loose. The ball joint is there to create the movement for the linkage, not the bolt in the control arm.
Good point, but with a nylock, shouldn't back off, at least.
Brian Phillips true, I just tightened mine on my carbon z cub just to make sure
Hey, while you're at it - check the SPINNER is still tight on the prop shaft. I had mine come off mid flight - all is well, and dead stick landed without incident. We found and installed the spinner and prop (all in one piece) BUT I damaged the cowl when the prop popped off.
This is also why I was having vibration that came and went. Just a heads up :)
Brian Phillips thanks for the heads up!!
Gracias amigo
Danata
Ok that plane is awesome!
Yeah! My thoughts exactly! WAY better plane for the money than the EC1500, if you ask me. It's just HUGE!!!
Just bought this plane last night. Looking forward to putting it together today and hopefully seeing your radio set up sooner than later! Edit: well sooner came 45 minutes in haha. Seems like this fussy lil BNF plane should stand for build and fly rather than bind and fly.
Yep, it was a bit of a pain, especially with the main landing gear assembly, but honestly, you could do it in 2-3 hours without the filming part making everything take longer :)
I try to make links for each part of the build, see in the description, just for future reference ;) Thanks for watching - YOU WILL LOVE THIS PLANE!!!
Great job as usual, thanks Brian!
Thanks George!

Thanks! Glad you did too!!
I don't disagree, but the plastic assemblies might be a bit more stiff?
why run adapter it limits current why not just solder on ec5 connector...just wondering
We have it sitting in a box, in queue now ;) Coming soon!!!
I really want the Hangar 9 one, anyway ;)
However, this plane is AMAZING! Obviously a balsa plane will be better, but this plane is no shlub by any stretch of the imagination.
If you're even remotely interested, you will LOVE this plane!!!

Brian, you said you'd have alot of problems on the adapter if you used solid core wire. Just wondering what those problems might be.
Atleast thats how i view it
I make fun of people who use pincer grip...but they probably make fun of me ;) Whatever gets you flying, right? :)

Hey Brian the lock nut on the things that on the wing with the lock nut it ain’t going in to the lock bolt what can I do to fix that

Do you prefer turbo timber or this one? And why?
This one, but it's a LOT more expensive, and WAY BIGGER...this is 2.1m, while the Timber is 1.5m...it's like Twice the size.
Bigger is not necessarially better, since the larger planes are more effort to get from here to there, and some people can't handle them for this reason, so for you, you might need the Timber, but really want the Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m

If so, TURN OFF SAFE...if you bound with SAFE, you might have forgotten to ASSIGN the switch you want to use...thus it's still on "all the time" - MAKE SURE YOU ACTIVATE THE CHANNEL TO THE SWITCH YOU WANT TO USE OR IT WON'T WORK!!!!!!
Think this beauty would fly with two 1300 3s s?
I bet you'd puff them quick. You could technically make it work, but I fear you'd destroy both packs.
IF you did 4 of them...two in parallel and two sets of two in series, I think you might be able to make it happen.
@@BrianPhillipsRC thanks Brian, keep up the great work!
I heard the mini-apprentice would be a really good one for me to get for beginner. i really wanted a Carbon Cub-Z (you know, the big blue one, i mean really huge one) but maybe the mini apprentice is the one for me.
Yes, the mini apprentice OR the 1.5m apprentice would both be great choices!
Can you do crow breaking? Would it be useful in a cub?
Yes, and I would say you'll probably find it unnecessary, but sure you CAN do it ;) The transmitter setup would be a huge pain ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC yeah man I have the asw28 and tried setting it up but i only have a cheap flysky radio and those are difficult to program.
Hi Brian yes I watched the umx j3cub mod video when you first did it....seems a long time ago now lol..and I fitted tundra tires to my cub after watching how to do it ...I have seen wireless nav lights now how fast things move on thanks again best wishes Chris
Great! It's so hard to keep track of who's seen what ;)
I guess with a big plane, like this, wireless nav lights might be a possibility.
LOL
1) Drive down the price
2) Improve the technology
3) Build a larger group to keep representation against an ever-growing government bureaucracy that wants to inject itself into every aspect of our lives!!!
...it's totally disgusting that the last item needs to be on there, but it DOES - we need to have a larger collective voice, and presence as we area forced to lobby to keep freedoms like the ability to fly a plane for enjoyment.
Waiting patiently for another flight!
