After months of talking about it, I finally release the long-awaited Mipha Theory! Today, we look at whether Link had romantic feelings for Mipha or not using both the game and it's DLC!

Although Mipha's story is tragic, the beauty of her story is that she ended up doing exactly what she wanted. Through Mipha's grace, she gets to protect and heal link, even in death. Perhaps the best ending for her outside of her actually marrying link.

You know what is the real tragedy in this whole mess, it's not Mipha, nor Link's feelings 100 years ago, it's the current present Link: He doesn't know any of this, he doesn't remember his previous life with Mipha, only a few memories and diary entries is everything he knows about her, he knows Mipha made that armor for him with the intention to marry him, but he doesn't know if he would have reciprocated the feelings back then, because the Link he used to be is gone now, so he has to live now with being uncertain if his true love was Mipha all along or not.

Botw 2 should bring memories of link and mipha when they were young. I feel like there should be 8 memories in the next game 4 from the childhood of the champions, and 4 of them being murdered by the blights. It sounds dark but I would really like too see what happened in the divine beasts!

SleepyPuddle 6 Yes! Same! Even after the games when he has no obligations, I imagine it would be hard for him to live normally or find love and all that jazz. I mean, yeah, it’s great, you have defeated the big bad! But what do you do at that point? You have spent so much time with the burden of this great thing, you’ve shut off your emotions, and then you overcome them and... that’s it. You’re done. What do you do, emotionally? You no longer have to shut them out, but that’s hard to do on a dime.

SleepyPuddle 6 I’m not sure how it works in the Zelda ‘verse, (but it is heavily based on our concepts and that does have merit) but in real life that’s a muddy question. Their job title definitely meant they had to retain good face and be (or at least act) chivalrous and they definitely weren’t allowed to marry princesses.
What’s interesting is that the romanticization of knights (aka, the thing that actually influences media) lead to the concept of not quite romantic love, but more than platonic love, called courtly love. Which was basically flirting, dancing, and devotion. It kept out all the marriage aspects, because Rule Number One: a knight, no matter what his fame, or how good he is, can NOT marry a princess. It’s a class thing, and boy oh boy, even Link being a champion wouldn’t really cut it.
As far as everyone else is concerned, he’s just a dude who happens to be the rebirth of some warrior who fought Ganon. Which, while important, people not technically a Link have fought and defeated Ganon before.
And Zelda? Well she’s Princess Zelda, incarnation of the goddess that basically EVERYBODY worships. Everyone know her, everyone knows her name. Do people know you (as a player) are a champion? Yeah, but that’s just Champion Link. Who has a darkness sealing sword.
Look at Zelda, who wears the same color of blue that the champions all wear. She was ordered to go to them has been with them just as much as Link. She’s basically a champion too. But she is first Princess Zelda, not champion Zelda. Even Mipha is referred to as champion Mipha, not princess Mipha, even though she’s “supposed” to be in the same boat, as Zelda.
It leads me to believe that the royal Zora family is treated as lesser? Lords and Ladies of the court rather than straight up royalty, which actually makes sense, considering they are such a small race compared to the Hylians and really any other race. You don’t see any traveling or out in the wild, so there’s... just not enough influence in the “system”... but it also then makes sense for Mipha and Link to have been deemed okay by the court. Link has a direct, more permanent, connection with Zelda, and therefore, would give them more influence in the court, and Link gets to marry into lordship/royalty. Win win.
I’m so sorry I just wrote an essay. All you asked was chastity and knights and I took it so far. I just know too much about knights, royalty, and courts.

The Diary Entries were really interesting and gave me a whole new impression on the characters. Revali for example. Before the DLC Revali was just a full of himself, jealous and selfcentered part of the old champion group to me. I thought there is nothing more to him but after reading his diary I got the feeling that he was actually kinda interested in Link. Revali was a proud and strong warrior and so was Link. Maybe he was even trying to get a bit closer to him as a fellow companion.
He mentions how he actually tried to talk with him while Zelda was away and how he got no reaction at all. He then even starts to provoke him in order to get some kind of respond.
In the end he sounds frustrated and flies off to his Divine Beast - fleeing from the situation. I actually felt sorry for Revali afterwards.
Why is everyone so thirsty for link? Also his attitude was more that of a rival.

I think the funny part here is the fact that link and mipha actually argued when they were heading up the mountain. He at least had some emotions, and with mipha's personality this would've been hilarious and heartbreaking to watch.

I can't help but feel bad for Mipha. She never got a chance to tell Link her feelings herself. It just went untold and she passed on without him really knowing. Then 100 years after her death, the hero finally finds out. He has no clue if the old Link would have excepted her feelings because now he's a different dude. He just has to live the rest of his life wondering what would have happened if she had gotten the chance to tell him, and it's heartbreaking, as much as I don't ship them, still, it's sad. And the fact that Mipha saw Link change in the way of never smiling, is too, heartbreaking. To see the one you love not happy is terrible. But In this case, Mipha didn't even know what he was feeling anymore because he was so silent and emotionless. She then has to go on hoping that he's okay.
And I kind of hope he didn't have feelings for Mipha, as cruel as it sounds because then he would have been even more heartbroken at her death.
...I guess I have Link all to myself now... hehehe...

I don't know why but in my opinion that blue hand in the sequel trailer seems to have a kind of control between life and death. If my suggets are real maybe the champions would have a chance to be alive once again including Mipha but I know it would be really hard to happen.

Well done! Mipha's unrequited love is definitely tragic. It was interesting to see Nintendo present the story this way instead of the comically absurd way Ruto loved Link in OoT. Also, I can't believe you didnt mention how Mipha acted in the flashback of them getting a picture taken. That was definitely "I have a crush on this guy, but I'm too nervous to say anything" behavior. I loved it!
lets not forget how Mipha was about to confess her love for Link but then chickened out. She also hints to it two times after defeating the illusion version of waterblight Ganon (different dialogue for each time you defeat the blights, up to 5 times)
Yes, Mipha's diary was the biggest clue that it was one sided.
I also loved Urbosa's diary. I think it showed a better picture of Zelda and Link's relationship.

I feel that Mipha had so much potential to be an awesome character, but i feel that her whole personality revolved around loving link, and if you were to take that away, she wouldn’t have much of one. So the Zora armor is kind of an engagement ring and there is the question of if a Hylian and a Zora can be a match . . . the Zora armor has the power to let a Hylian swim like a Zora and breath under water, a Zora would not need the armor in the first place . . . . I think it is case closed

I know this is late, but I imagine if Link had a child or children in the future he might name a daughter after Mipha to carry on his friend's memory. She was his healer, and a childhood friend who had an impact on him in a positive way. I'm a noob to this fandom, but it still fascinates me.
Ok, two bits of evidence you 100% glossed over:
There's a Zora girl you can talk to at Zora's Domain that literally tells Link how she was jealous of him and Mipha, and even made him pick between her and Mipha (implying another love triangle) and he picked Mipha.
Then, there's the dialogue option with King Dorephan where Link says that he and Mipha are "united, now" which isn't something you about a platonic relationship to the father who knows she was in love with you...
Except we don't have nay time frame and the game if anything implies he didn't choose at all. Not sure where you take from that said conversation implies Link chose Mipha when given the choice.
And what Link says is up to the player if anything.

But as for players choosing Link's dialogue, I'd argue Nintendo wouldn't even give the option if it contradicted canon. Nintendo at the very least wanted to give LinlXMipha as A canon option, if it's not THE canon option

but honestly i have some other interesting questions about mipha
1. How old was she when she died?
2. How is it she seems to be a dolphin-like Zora while her brother Sidon is a shark (and their father is a whale)? Coming off of that, where is her and Sidon's mother? Did the jewelry in Dento's forge room belong to her? Are she and Sidon actually half siblings?
3. How did she get her necklace on. her head is huge.
It's just a theory but I think Zora's in Breath of the Wild are adaptative to their environment, they are born with normal fins and they change along with them resembling their personality. If the Zora is passive their adaptation makes them disguise as passive animals such as dolphins, but if it is agressive they disguise as more dangerous animals such as sharks, just like how human faces change along with our personality.

The name sidon remembers me the two sounds SI and DO (that N is probably put there Just for...euphony)

The only missing notes are SOL and LA (G and H) maybe we Can put an N letter Just Like sidon
So, She would be called Sollan...otherwise maybe mipha and sidon's names are After their parents' names so if dorephan gave the sillabs DO to sidon (and Also the N) and the PHA to mipha, the sillabs MI and SI are probably in their mother's name

I like how when Sidon says Mipha was in Love with him, link was like "oh cool" and when he successfully makes good food, a big smile lights up on his face.
4 words - “We are united now” said by Link to Mipha’s dad after coming back from seeing her in the divine beast.
The depressing ending that we don’t want to hear could have gone like this.
Mipha proposed to link and link learned to love her after that. I think it would make sense that their love would evolve into something so strong and it would be the strongest right before the battle with calamity Ganon. In the chaos of the battle, link would somehow learn of miphas tragic death and he would fight Ganon but he would be heartbroken and lose the fight because of this. Zelda would learn that he lost the battle for that reason and would purposely wipe his memory and let him heal for a hundred years so he can come back focused to kill Ganon. ( Zelda could also end up jealous). These events would also explain why a lot of characters try not to explain too much about links past once they learn he lost his memory becausethey also knew how tragic it was for links lover to die in battle.
THAT is a depressing story of Zelda that I would rather like and would cry to Honestly and it fits nicely into the story

I completely agree. Very well made and it summed up my feelings about the scenario in a nutshell, from the iconic Japanese love triangle to the ironic foreshadowing of Ruto's love.
Just one more thing I would add would be that creator Aonuma said in an interview after the DLC release that Mipha's love, while deep, was "similar to a mother's love towards her child." If this holds true, then Link would view her as a motherly figure rather than a love interest. It also lines up with the aging differences. Mipha says Link grew before her eyes from a child to a young man, while she, as Zora's age much slower, remained very much unchanged. Meeting her at age four, it is more likely that Link saw her as a loving mother from that age and continued to view her in that light, as she hasn't changed much. This also plays into the Japanese love triangle, as the childhood friend option is almost always described by the main protagonist as a doting mother or older sister to them.
And just in case anyone says comparing Breath of the Wild to anime is like comparing apples to oranges, the directors have confirmed that anime was a source of inspiration to the game.

Never once in my entire life did i think I would see Toradora referenced when talking about Legend of Zelda.
It seemed more to me like they really liked each other, but with the war quickly approaching, they made this silent agreement not to pursue a relationship and possibly divide their attention from what is important. It's not uncommon for people to put their whole personal lives on hold during a tough time, and both Link and Mipha were very focused on trying to save Hyrule.

Link visits Zoras domain on the regular, it’s like how as a kid you’d go to your grandparents house, for link Zoras domain was like that. And Mipha obviously has some feelings before if she was arguing with him, she may have said things like “You’ll get hurt!” And link must have said stuff like “I’ll be fine!” Meaning she had cared for him a lot. And she did say to link “I was always willing to heal your wounds.” Meaning she healed him often.

before champion's ballad i too believed that it would have been possible, in due time, for link to develop feelings for mipha, or that they might have already been there, subconsciously, and that it was only a matter of time (and without evil pig king interfering) before link realized it. after playing CB though, i no longer believe that's the case, or at least not as likely. this video was pretty great and i have no complaints about any of the arguments, so i'm only adding on a couple of points you didn't mention, but that i deemed important in realizing why link never had any romantic feelings for mipha.
from reading mipha's diary, the first and most important thing i realized is that link and mipha were nowhere near as close as i thought they were. before CB i genuinely thought link had lived in zora's domain for some time, considering how not only mipha, but many of the other zoras spoke to him as if he was one of them. in mipha's diary though, we see that link never lived in zora's domain and only visited occasionally. long periods of time pass between his visits, and while they may not seem as long for a zora, entire periods of link's childhood and adolescence go by between each visit. in short, she's not really a constant in his life, but more like that aunt of cousin you see every few years at a family gathering. this changes slightly once he becomes champion, as more visits are mentioned, but there wasn't enough time for them to grow much closer. this is even supported by the fact that mipha explicidly only starts developing feelings for him after he saves her from the lynel, and before she'd never really thought about it.
before CB i'd also seen people mentioning that mipha making the zora armor meant that her and link were already engaged, but that point has been disproven in CB, as we see mipha spontaneously deciding to craft the armor without link even knowing anything about it. this armor equally speaks volumes about how sporadic mipha's feelings for link were in general. she immediately starts gathering materials for the armor not long after she realized that she loves link, and she doesn't even know how he feels at that point. her family even hyped her up on the idea, as especially her father was very welcoming of the idea of mipha marrying link because of the legend of ruto falling for the hero of time. but she does mention in her diary about how she's insecure about whether or not she should give the armor to link, suggesting that she knows, in a sense, how out of the blue all of this is. she mentions that she plans on giving the armor to him on top of ruta at sunset of his next visit, and we even see the outcome of this, as that is one of link's original memories in the game (mipha's touch). considering how the armor is still in zora's domain 100 years later, we know that mipha backed out of her resolution, and never gave link the armor like she'd wanted to. this indicates a certain degree of insecurity, that she doesn't know how link might react to it and doesn't want to risk shoving some possibly unwanted feelings at him.
then there's the things mentioned in mipha's diary that outright confirm that link doesn't feel about mipha the way she feels about him. as others have mentioned, when mipha tries asking link what's wrong, he won't tell her and just shrugs it off. when zelda, however, asks him the same question, it takes him a moment, but he does open up to her eventually. there could be other reasons for that, but the game developers wouldn't add this parallel in both zelda's and mipha's diaries if they didn't want us to notice that. in short, he becomes more comfortable with zelda than he ever was with mipha. this doesn't need to have romantic connotations, but it's definitely something the developers wanted us to realize.
thus, from the realization that their friendship wasn't nearly as deep as one might think, to mipha's own hesitation in coming forward with her feelings, to link's inability to open up with her the way he does with zelda, i personally believe that link has probably never seen mipha as anything but an old friend, while mipha may have been blinded by his image of a knight in shining armor and the legends of the zora princess falling in love with a hylian.
I see your arguments, but there is one thing I wanted to say. In my personal experience, I'm more willing to open up to a good friend than my lover, simply because, like Link, I hate being the center of attention and intentionally play my heart close to my chest so as to not disappoint. Mipha was gentle, so when Link shook his head, she didn't want to push. Zelda was pushy. As evidence from her diary, how it took time, she obviously kept pressing the matter. Link opened up because he wanted her to stop asking. That's something I do with my friends. Sorry, it's just that, Link and I seem to have similar personalities, so I thought my insight would help a little. I'll go away now...

I'd say it's unfair to say that a ship "sinks." Even if a certain ship may be most logical, especially if that's how the creators intended it, any ship can still be as real as any fan wants it to be. After all, regardless of which ship is "canon," all the characters in question are still, in truth, fictional. In order for a ship to "sink," it would have to just be straight wrong, and indisputably so. As long as the consumers of a game are allowed to enjoy it however they want (which they are), it's never universally wrong to insist on any ship.
tl;dr: Mipha x Link will never be a dead ship, no matter how much people try to disprove it. This goes for all ships, even the creepy ones.

Link doesn't open up to Mipha. He does open up to Zelda.
Love isn't love if you can't, or feel you can't, be vulnerable as well. If takes a lot of strength, trust, respect and courage to let someone in, moreso than just putting on a show of invulnerability.
Then again sometimes it is easier to open up to a close friend especially one who shares a similar burden of responsibility, than the one you care for as you don't want to burden them with your problems.
One could argue that Link was trying to protect Mipha since they were so close...he didn't want to burden someone so innocent with his problems as they were his and his alone to handle. Zelda, someone he HAD to be around anyways, felt the same burden as the Princess so I think he eventually felt that it took some of that burden off her shoulders if he let her know that he felt the pressure she felt as well. Mipha already understood this pressure as a Princess but already had own natural gifts and used the Divine Beast almost supernaturally well(which did make Zelda jealous). I would think that Mipha and Link were in a physical relationship but that it didn't translate to outright husband and wife...Link had a special place in his heart for Mipha no doubt and he was protecting those he loved in his mind by keeping his worries and doubts inside.

I think the hole in our hearts that this story makes is what makes it great. Mipha and Link relationship is nor shallow or deep, but it's enough to make us feel a lot.
One of the most tragic things is that i feel Mipha knew, from the start, that Link would never be with her no matter how hard she wished he could. Link was destined to become the hero and protect Zelda and, since she mentions the legend referencing Ocarina of Time, she must know how it ended, which gives another explanation as to why she never told him.
The armor could then be seen as a last effort by her to have Link stay with her, which makes it even sadder.
10:59 it's says that when mipha noticed he didn't talk as much anymore that she asked him why he changed but he told mipha that nothing was wrong, but in Zelda's diary it says that zelda noticed link didn't talk much and when zelda asked link why he didn't talk much he told her the truth and why he didn't talk much, unlike when mipha had asked him.
Maybe because he didn't wanted Mipha to worry too much about him, as they are childhood friends it may be rough for Link to tell the truth to Mipha, implying that he worries a lot more about Mipha that we thought
I wanna be totally honest: you asked if that heartbreak is what we would want? Yes I personally would have loved to get that memory back, imagine instead slowly getting memories back as you walk through and around zoras domain and then when given the armor link has a flashback to mipha handing the armor to him and him accepting it and her feelings only to lose her hours later because he was protecting Zelda.

In the realm of speculation there's a LOT of possibilities, but for what we have, Nintendo is sending a clear message that says "this is one sided love". The fact that Link didn't open to Mipha about his concerns is the most crushing part of it.

Well, for all there is, there's info about how Link reacted to all of it, which lends to reasonable conclusions. We know that Link opened to Zelda(and pretty much no one else in the game prior to the calamity at least) about his struggles, we know Mipha fell for him late into their past experience(well after he retrieved the Master Sword at least), and we know Paya is very self defeating about her chances with Link as he doesn't seem to be into her(she said in her own diary that her love may not be requited)

I'm not saying that he told others it's just that we don't know... Or even what it takes for him to tell people about his past or even how personal it was to him. What was said about Zelda was that he wanted to rescue her and see her smile in the Japanese versions. I kinda wish Nintendo added more though, backstory to everyone....and their relationships to were it was obvious like done with skyward sword
It's safe to say he only told her, because NO OTHER KNOWN CHARACTER says ANYTHING about those concerns, or acknowledges them, or hints about getting them at all. All the other champions only seem to get his stoic side. Seriously, Daruk seems bad at reading people, and there's no mention of any of this as he only describes Link as "strong and reliable". Urbosa doesn't seem to get much out of hime either, as the few interactions between the two(including her diary) just show that for all she knew he was good company for Zelda(which seems more like a hunch as she doesn't address Link telling her much other than asking when Zelda exploited a loophole to evade him) and she was the one to came with the cross dressing idea. Revali is outright triggered by his stoicism, and we know for sure that he didn't open to Mipha, as she asked about this stuff and got no answer. That's one of the reasons why Zelda bonded with him so strongly to begin with. He went full stone out of sheer pressure, and she got to see the other side.
I ran into this as I was playing, the Zora who runs the inn, Kodah, also loved link and had asked him to choose between her and mipha, which could imply that she was sure that Link liked Mipha in some way.
The implications is more that Link didn't choose at all. And Kodah moved on AFTER Link was considered dead. It's not really conclusive
A labor of Love is often unrequited. The armour's construction was an exercise not in futility, but an exercise in passion. And it so happened to help Link later on. In that, the armour is Mipha's gift of constant protection.

Mipha and Link I think would have made for a better story in the end, Tragedy and revenge fueled link out to destroy the calamity that took his life away I think would have been much better.
What would have been even better is that in the process of defeating the divine beasts you retake control of them before a final assault on the castle and ganon Post game would remove the bloodmoon cycles and enemies would be more rare to find and we would move to restoring the 5 main cities.
That actually sounds more simplistic. And it doesn't really feel like that such outcome with the Divine Beasts fits with Breath of the Wild's game design.

Idk why I’m getting this recommended now but in Hyrule Warriors age of calamity there is that one scene where mipha tells Daruk she wants to train and looks at link saying she wants to “fight alongside” and trails off as link looks at her and starts walking towards her she gets all flustered and stuff so I think link knew she was in love with him and was maybe curious about her but before they could really explore anything she dies 🤷🏽♀️ in a different timeline they might have ended up together if she actually had the chance to ask him to marry her before she died

I haven't played the DLC but the writing of the main story made it pretty clear to me that Link didn't feel the same way. And I think Mipha knew that. When she talks about spending time together, and hoping things could go back to the way they were when they were children, it was clear to me that she did feel the distance between them. She's hoping she'll get a chance to have him fall in love with her. She made the armor because she was so confident in her love that she could change his heart. I don't know, that's just how I read into it.

I feel like there’s a bit of evidence you’re missing here. It may not change the outcome, but I thought I would mention it, since you didn’t bring it up. There are moments where we hear of instances where Mipha and Link were sort of “dating”, Link was spending a lot of time with Mipha, and Sideon even goes so far as to say Link “may have become his brother-in-law.” Granted, we don’t know exactly when this happens, but I would think it happened on his second trip to Zora’s Domain, when Link was older and mature, shortly after the Divine Beasts were dug up. Do his feelings change? Did they exist in the first place? I don’t know, but the story that felt most satisfying for me was “Link has feelings toward Mipha all the way up to the Great Calamity, but becomes closer to Zelda the more they work together. He puts these feelings aside and focuses on his job as the Princess’s knight, and as a Champion, working alongside Mipha and the others. After the Great Calamity, with everyone dead, he has no time to sort out his feelings, as he and Zelda are attacked by hordes of Guardians. He sacrifices himself to save Zelda, and when he wakes up, his memories are gone. He recoveres all his memories, saves Zelda, and ultimately falls in love with her. Mipha supports this herself, essentially “releasing” Link and telling him to move on and live his life without worrying about her, because he would always have her support, friendship, and love from afar."

And yet, if there was no pressure put on him, most of the situations between them wouldn't have happened. There might not have been anything past the young swordsman training at the Zora domain, and then they wouldn't have had as an interconnected life as they did have. I doubt they would have ever had the moment after the Lynel as well. Mipha loved Link because of his reactions and determination in the face of the pressure, without it, he would have been a different person, and I'm not sure Mipha would have ever mustered up the courage to confess her love like she was about to.
