I don’t believe in killing something because it is imperfect. So many told me to put my dog down because she was born with congenital front leg issue. With therapy (which she actually loved because it meant we went swimming weekly, and as a Newf that was her favorite thing to do) and some medications, she lived a full happy life. Was able to do walks, go for rides in the car, play with other dogs and her toys, and cuddle with me. She was such a happy girl and made so many people smile. The world would have missed something special if I had listened to people saying to put her down. Animals are amazingly adaptive. And some hassle or minor discomfort doesn’t mean you quit on them. It might mean Valentine gets a special diet and need to stay inside in colder temps. He will let Mikayla know when ‘he is done’. She knows these guys well and is very attentive. I know she wouldn’t let any of them suffer unnecessarily.
Valentine is a darling. He's gentle, he's so innocent, and I love how happy he is at Save A Fox.... I really hope they can help him continue to have a good... and long life with his family.

Yeah you get used to the pain in a way. I went on a medicine to help with pain levels and I ran out at one point and I was like "holy cow how did I deal with this before"

I forget not many people read the descriptions. #thevalentinefox BACKSTORY Valentine is a 5 year old pearl/cross furfarm rescue fox with a genetic condition called Gingival Hyperplasia. Because of this he gets surgery once a year to trim back his gums. Since his condition is not curable at this time. Valentines recap from 10-20-2017 "Valentine was brought into the vet for his very first exam. During this exam he received all vaccines, was neutered, and we had a biopsy done to find out what exactly is wrong with his mouth. The results from his biopsy came back. He has something called Gingival hyperplasia which is just the overgrowth of gums and luckly this is not cancerous. Studies have shown this is often hereditary in farm foxes. This happens when they are bred for the fur quality (many of you may have noticed he has the thickest coat of fur here) and this was the unfortunate side affect. We can help Val! He will need more surgeries to remove the tissues so the teeth can have normal wear and exposure. Removing the extra tissue will also help prevent infections. Because with how they are now he often gets hair stuck in his gums. It may take more than one surgery to help Val. His sponsors are going to do what they can but we would appreciate donations to help Valentine's medical costs."

Val is such a sweet and gentle boy. Even during the whole appointment he was such a good boy! Definitely earned that pup cup, which he seemed to love! No wonder why he is one of my fave foxes at SaF 💖💖 That last part of the video made me tear up a bit, but it's great to hear he's doing well so far!! He always looks so happy, especially when hanging around with Jack and Luka and chilling with them and how much they love him in return as well. It's really awesome that Val is getting the quality of life he deserves despite his condition. So, really, thank you Mikayla, Ethan, Merri, and every other volunteer for everything you do for every single resident at SaF! It is greatly appreciated not only by them, but by all of us as well. You guys have truly done wonders for all of us during these rough times the world has been going through this past year. I really wish I could donate money or buy SaF merch, but I don't have the funds, so I will continue to support the channel as much as I can (this is one of the few channels I make sure I watch with the adblockers completely turned off and never skip ads, so hopefully that helps, if only a little!!).
Just wanted to note that I have experienced gum hyperplasia, just covering a couple of molars, and it wasn’t painful. It was removed with a scalpel and never grew back, fortunately. Also, I have had a minor cat surgery done with laser that didn’t heal well and a second vet who saw the kitty on follow-up thought that scalpel surgery generally was better. Of course, Valentine is a different species and has an advanced condition. I’m sure any surgery will be a help. Thanks for the video; it is great to hear that his weight and relations with other foxes are all good. He looks like a happy boy. Thanks so much for all that you do for Valentine!
Val seems to be a very good boy and I think he still enjoys life, despite his handicap. I think us humans are sometimes too quick to want to put an animal down when we would never feel that way about handicapped people.
What's sadder is humans are the reason his mouth is like that. He is a fur farm rescue and because they want to have a certain look and quality of the fur they massively inbreed and over breed. Conditions like this are a result of that. However long it is we know he's living his best life, instead of living a short existence in a fur farm and not even being used because of the condition.
Are you kidding? Society goes out of its way to often make people with disabilities wish that we would put ourselves down, if you would quite frankly like to put it that way. Also, babies with disabilities are more likely to be aborted than babies without disabilities.

Huh so because you know me you might not kill me you'd just let others die, great logic there from future social workers. Again not uncommon we put up with prejudice, hate, misunderstanding and fear daily it is exhausting. The number of times I've been asked which special school I went to would be thousands patronising conversations are also constant. People have much to learn I'm glad Val and save a fox are helping. Disability in all its forms is natural and part of life, everyone deserves to have a chance. FyI I'm not after pity its important to be real; parts of life is hard with disabilities but peoples attitudes can make it amazing and rewarding or excruciatingly painful. I'm glad Val is the biggest fox in the shelter, he's a little bear. Maybe that's why no one picks on him. Although maybe it's just his personality. Apparently Finn loves him, and Finn tends to be a little bit of a bully round other males.
@@timvanderlee4110 He is now, yes, with Vixie, Dixie and Mutt. Valentine is in with Jack, Luka and Felix, and more recently Sophie, Pan and Jagger. However, Val is one of SaveAFox's longest standing residents, and there was a time when they shared a yard and got on brilliantly.

Valentine is a trooper, and enjoying his life, home, and friends. I'm sure he will let you know when that changes. I know you and the vet will do everything in your power to ensure he's as comfortable as possible. Give him a belly rub for me.

My heart was melting when I saw valentine condition and how determined you were to save him and try to make him comfortable and keep him alive. Good bless your kindness and your determent to keep him going and give him a chance. I always believe that love and compassion is the key for a quality of life. Valentine needs you to thrive. As you said in your video that he is the alpha male in the pack and he seems happy, please keep him safe and alive. If he was in the wild and need to hunt his food he wouldn’t have a chance, but he is safe with you and you are taking good care of him so he can have another chance. You are a true Angel!!!
Val is my favorite. Like him, i too am physically damaged with 4 fingers on my right hand amputated way back in my teens. So, go Valentine go, boy. You are Prince Valentine in my book. Thank you too Save a Fox for all you do, and may God bless and richly provide for your work.

When I first saw him struggle with the egg, it broke my heart. I am glad it's not caused by someone bad and just genetic. I hope he lives a long happy life ☺️

I had a cat with this issue and the vet suggested that she have all her back teeth pulled rather than put her through the surgery every year. She was about two years at the time. It never slowed her eating down. She lived to be 19 years old. I know foxes are different, but could it be an option?
Sad to say, but Valentine's been put down, y'all. Everyone decided it would be for the best as his condition was worsening. Mikayla sought a second opinion, but to no avail. Rest in peace Valentine, and bless you SaveAFox for giving him the best life you could. ❤️

Okay, quick disclaimer: I know that gingival hyperplasia undoubtedly sometimes occurs in wild foxes. It is, after all, an autosomal recessive condition, meaning it's hereditary. But it still hurts to my very soul to know that this is primarily the result of some... _unperson's_ greed. ("Unperson" is the _nicest_ thing I can say about them. If I said what I _really_ wanted to say, TH-cam's filters would probably block my post. Lots of four-letter words would be required.) It's nice to see that he's doing so well and getting the quality of life he deserves.
@@davidallamericananarchist9220 Not necessarily. It seems to be a mutation in the MAP2K6 gene, which also codes for the length and thickness of guard hairs. Longer, thicker, guard hairs are considered a sign of quality. So it probably occurs (rarely) in nature, but I don't know how often. It _mostly_ occurs in fur farm animals. It is hereditary, and affects males more often than females, which implies that the gene is carried on the sex chromosomes. If you selectively breed for fur quality, sooner or later you're going to end up with a fox like Valentine.

Valentine is the one I think about the most. It seems like he's relatively happy, not in pain, which is most important. He doesn't know life any other way...so certainly just because his appearance is concerning...as long as he's not in pain...I hope he stays around as long as possible. I wish I lived near them, I'd offer to help with him in any way I could, I just love him.

I love Valentine, I think he is absolutely beautiful. He has gorgeous fur and markings and his eyes make my heart melt. So long as he's happy and comfortable, that's all that matters. Instead of having a pup-cup moustache he ended up with a pup-cup beard hahaha - sweet little angel. Val was such a good boy at the vets. I think he would make it clear to you if the pain was getting to him, via not eating and becoming a loner. maybe it might be worth you putting him in Emmie's yard for winter, that way he can go into the house for warmth if his mouth is getting too cold.

I worry about people suggesting Val should be put down over this. is it a problem for him? Obviously. Does it require work? Of course. Is that a reason to end a life? Not even close. I appreciate everything you and your wonderful vet(s) do for Val and all the foxes. This is what real compassion looks like.
While it does seem like he's still in a decent state and there's no need take action until it's absolutely necessary, I do think that considering quality of life is important with animals like this. Animals can't make decisions about this on their own, and if Val were in a state of constant pain it's up to the caretaker to realize when it's time to allow him peace. It's compassionate to do that, even if it's very hard. When people comment about stuff like that they are just worried about his suffering, not about him being a burden.

As for people's motivations, while I won't make the same sweeping assumption that everyone has the same motivations. I will say that I have known people who put animals down to remove the baggage of caring for them. Financial and/or emotional. There are people who will do that with humans as well. I really don't see how you could look at Val and think putting him down is a reasonable course of action without there being a fundamental problem with your evaluation of life.

Val seems to be a very good boy and I think he still enjoys life, despite his handicap. I think us humans are sometimes too quick to want to put an animal down when we would never feel that way about handicapped people.
What's sadder is humans are the reason his mouth is like that. He is a fur farm rescue and because they want to have a certain look and quality of the fur they massively inbreed and over breed. Conditions like this are a result of that. However long it is we know he's living his best life, instead of living a short existence in a fur farm and not even being used because of the condition.

Are you kidding? Society goes out of its way to often make people with disabilities wish that we would put ourselves down, if you would quite frankly like to put it that way. Also, babies with disabilities are more likely to be aborted than babies without disabilities.

I've literally had strangers yell in my face, 'If I were you I'd f.en kill myself" No its not that rare either, I have sat in lectures at uni and listened to people say if they had a child with a disability they'd let them die. When I piped up Um thanks sitting right here and I don't think you would (I'm a wheelchair user) 'oh no not you you are smart who want to be stuck with them forever!" Huh so because you know me you might not kill me you'd just let others die, great logic there from future social workers. Again not uncommon we put up with prejudice, hate, misunderstanding and fear daily it is exhausting. The number of times I've been asked which special school I went to would be thousands patronising conversations are also constant. People have much to learn I'm glad Val and save a fox are helping. Disability in all its forms is natural and part of life, everyone deserves to have a chance. FyI I'm not after pity its important to be real; parts of life is hard with disabilities but peoples attitudes can make it amazing and rewarding or excruciatingly painful. Sending good vibes to all those living with disability we are tough but people need to be better as well. 🦊🐾

I'm glad Val is the biggest fox in the shelter, he's a little bear. Maybe that's why no one picks on him. Although maybe it's just his personality. Apparently Finn loves him, and Finn tends to be a little bit of a bully round other males.

@@timvanderlee4110 He is now, yes, with Vixie, Dixie and Mutt. Valentine is in with Jack, Luka and Felix, and more recently Sophie, Pan and Jagger. However, Val is one of SaveAFox's longest standing residents, and there was a time when they shared a yard and got on brilliantly.

I've discovered Save a Fox since the pandemic started. (around March 2020 or so) and I've only seen Finnegan in the Dixie, Vixie yard etc.
It's awesome that even Finnegan accepts him.

Valentine is a trooper, and enjoying his life, home, and friends. I'm sure he will let you know when that changes. I know you and the vet will do everything in your power to ensure he's as comfortable as possible. Give him a belly rub for me.

My heart was melting when I saw valentine condition and how determined you were to save him and try to make him comfortable and keep him alive. Good bless your kindness and your determent to keep him going and give him a chance. I always believe that love and compassion is the key for a quality of life. Valentine needs you to thrive. As you said in your video that he is the alpha male in the pack and he seems happy, please keep him safe and alive. If he was in the wild and need to hunt his food he wouldn’t have a chance, but he is safe with you and you are taking good care of him so he can have another chance. You are a true Angel!!!

I had a cat with this issue and the vet suggested that she have all her back teeth pulled rather than put her through the surgery every year. She was about two years at the time. It never slowed her eating down. She lived to be 19 years old. I know foxes are different, but could it be an option?

Sad to say, but Valentine's been put down, y'all. Everyone decided it would be for the best as his condition was worsening. Mikayla sought a second opinion, but to no avail.

Okay, quick disclaimer: I know that gingival hyperplasia undoubtedly sometimes occurs in wild foxes. It is, after all, an autosomal recessive condition, meaning it's hereditary. But it still hurts to my very soul to know that this is primarily the result of some... _unperson's_ greed. ("Unperson" is the _nicest_ thing I can say about them. If I said what I _really_ wanted to say, TH-cam's filters would probably block my post. Lots of four-letter words would be required.) It's nice to see that he's doing so well and getting the quality of life he deserves.

@@davidallamericananarchist9220 Not necessarily. It seems to be a mutation in the MAP2K6 gene, which also codes for the length and thickness of guard hairs. Longer, thicker, guard hairs are considered a sign of quality. So it probably occurs (rarely) in nature, but I don't know how often. It _mostly_ occurs in fur farm animals. It is hereditary, and affects males more often than females, which implies that the gene is carried on the sex chromosomes. If you selectively breed for fur quality, sooner or later you're going to end up with a fox like Valentine.

Valentine is the one I think about the most. It seems like he's relatively happy, not in pain, which is most important. He doesn't know life any other way...so certainly just because his appearance is concerning...as long as he's not in pain...I hope he stays around as long as possible. I wish I lived near them, I'd offer to help with him in any way I could, I just love him.

I love Valentine, I think he is absolutely beautiful. He has gorgeous fur and markings and his eyes make my heart melt. So long as he's happy and comfortable, that's all that matters.
Instead of having a pup-cup moustache he ended up with a pup-cup beard hahaha - sweet little angel.

Val was such a good boy at the vets. I think he would make it clear to you if the pain was getting to him, via not eating and becoming a loner. maybe it might be worth you putting him in Emmie's yard for winter, that way he can go into the house for warmth if his mouth is getting too cold.

I worry about people suggesting Val should be put down over this. is it a problem for him? Obviously. Does it require work? Of course. Is that a reason to end a life? Not even close. I appreciate everything you and your wonderful vet(s) do for Val and all the foxes. This is what real compassion looks like.
While it does seem like he's still in a decent state and there's no need take action until it's absolutely necessary, I do think that considering quality of life is important with animals like this. Animals can't make decisions about this on their own, and if Val were in a state of constant pain it's up to the caretaker to realize when it's time to allow him peace. It's compassionate to do that, even if it's very hard. When people comment about stuff like that they are just worried about his suffering, not about him being a burden.
@@KittyQuixotic If people are seeing him being treated well, getting along with his yard mates being looked after by Mikaela of all people and are ready to assume his QoL is suffering... that's a pretty ridiculous conclusion to come to. As for people's motivations, while I won't make the same sweeping assumption that everyone has the same motivations. I will say that I have known people who put animals down to remove the baggage of caring for them. Financial and/or emotional. There are people who will do that with humans as well.
I really don't see how you could look at Val and think putting him down is a reasonable course of action without there being a fundamental problem with your evaluation of life.
